"Oh. Well, why can't I feel my legs?" She inquires.
We both start to protest, and ask her, but Jace holds up a hand to me, telling me to stop. I take it and he speaks once again.
"What do you mean angel?" He asks slowly. But Iris never gets to answer because Magnus and Brother Zachariah stop Iris from answering.
"That's what we mean Jace and Clary. The thing is…" Magnus hesitates. Jace makes a motion for him to continue. I take Iris' hand into mine and I give it a squeeze. Jace does the same.
"Well, you see…the runes that Sebastian put on her thighs were energy draining runes. And now, Iris is paralyzed from the waist down, and since we can't remove the runes, she won't be able to walk for the rest of her life."
Iris Point of View
When Uncle Magnus said that I won't be able to walk, Mommy started to cry, more than she already was. I didn't understand what Uncle Magnus said. He said I was para-leezed. I don't know, but it must be bad because Mommy is crying and Daddy is comforting her, but has a sad expression on his face. I want to know what is wrong! This is one thing I hate about being 5, nobody tells you anything. I still can't feel my legs, or move them if I wanted to, but my parents do know that because they won't listen to me, if mommy would stop crying then maybe I could tell them. I can't believe Mommy is crying. Daddy told me that to cry is to show weakness, and Shadowhunters don't show weakness. Also, I do what my daddy tells me to do. I finally tap my Daddy on the shoulder to tell him what is wrong.
Jace Point of View
I can barely function. I always thought that I would protect my kids and they would never get hurt if I was there to protect them. It's all my fault, Max and Iris wanted me to come to the park with them, but I told them I wanted to spend time with Clary. If I hadn't done that, then Iris would still be able to walk. I feel like breaking down, crying, and just pull my baby girl into my arms, and tell her it is going to be all right. But I can't. I have to be strong. For Clary, she is so much worse than me, Clary and I both love our children equally, but I feel like she just has that Mama Bear instinct. I have to be strong for Max, Iris, and Luke. I have to be strong for everybody, but right now, I feel like I need to be comforted, I need to have someone hold me and tell me it's going to be okay. I finally let the tears that have been threatening to escape, fall free. Clary looked at me with disbelief written all over her face, she couldn't believe I was actually crying, she knew that I never cried. I always stayed strong for her. I was her rock, but this time, I let her comfort me.
As we embraced each other, I felt a tap on my shoulder. I untwined my arms from around Clary, and turned around. My eyes met the bright emerald green eyes of my beautiful daughter. She looked confused, her face had a questioning look on it. Her bright, and wavy hair was around her face, making it seem smaller than it really was. Although she usually wore her hair like that, but with the look she was giving him, she looked small and paler, her freckles stood out more. Jace knew why she was confused. He knew that she didn't understand what her Uncle Magnus just said. The look on her face said it all. He was waiting for her to ask him what Magnus said. He was going to have to explain to her that she would never be able to run again, never be able to climb up the jungle gym, never jump from the swing, never be trained to be a Shadowhunter.
"Daddy why are you and Mommy crying, you never cry." She said. I had to take a breath, I couldn't just come out and say that her legs will never work again. I reach out my hand and take her much smaller, paler, hand in mine. She looks up at me with those very big emerald green eyes that look exactly like my wife's. I can't speak. It's like the words just won't come out of my mouth. I really don't want to tell her that she can't enjoy the things and activities that she used to, and can't anymore.
"Ri-Ri," He used her nickname that Max gave her that the entire family now used. "Umm, those marks on your legs, they made your legs stop working." The look on her face made tears start to build up in the corners of Jace's eyes. She looked heart broken. I could tell by the look on her face that she was thinking about all the things she can't do anymore. She was the fastest person in the family, but not anymore.
"But, Daddy, I can't…I like to run, you said you would train me to be like you." She pleaded. Tears pooled in her eyes and she started to sniffle. Tears started to trail down her heart broken face. Jace reached a hand to her face, and wiped the tears from her face. He could tell that this was the worst thing in the world to her. Her life would never be the same. She finally broke down and sobbed. Iris hasn't cried for a really long time, since she was a baby, and when Sebastian put the runes on her. I gathered her in my arms and let her cry into my shoulder. I will hunt Sebastian down and kill him for doing this to my family.
We eventually came out of the infirmary, Clary and I did, Iris stayed in the infirmary bed. We told everybody what happened, and it was very bad. Everyone was crying, even Luke and Robert. We had to explain to the children separately, what happened. Max kept blaming himself, he thought it was all his fault because he was supposed to protect his sister. I kept telling him that it wasn't his fault, he is only five he wouldn't stand a chance against the demon boy. That would be the last thing that I would want to happen, two of my children hurt in the same day, and I would really not be okay with that. If Max would have tried to fight him, at the least he would have gotten seriously injured.
1 month later
Clary Point of View
I push open the thick, heavy, oak doors to the infirmary. As the sunlight fills the dark room, I see Iris start to stir in her sleep. Its 9:00 in the morning, Iris is probably up, but trying to go back to sleep. I make my way towards her bed, ignoring all her stuffed animals that litter the floor and on top of her bed. Her ruby red head pops out from under the covers, a smile stretches across her face. She opens her arms wide, wanting a hug from me. I cross over to her bed side and wrap my arms around her and squeeze her tight. She returns the hug and squeezes me even tighter. I finally let go and sit down on the side of her bed. I smooth out her hair, unlike my birds nest, her hair is smooth and wavy. However, when she wakes up, her hair almost has as many tangles as mine does when I brush it out. She is such a lovely girl, and when she grows up and goes to Alicante Academy, she have to fight off boys. Most likely Jace and Max will fight them off for her. But right now, maybe she won't have many boys wanting to date her, because a paralyzed Shadowhunter is not very common and is frowned upon in the Shadowhunter society. It is custom for when a Shadowhunter is born, if it has a disability or disease, you are supposed to kill the child.
That was one thing that Clary and Jace disagreed with in the Shadowhunter society. They felt that if a child is born with anything that sets them back, they should still live. And now, that is Iris. Who knows how the other Shadowhunters will react to her. How will she be treated at school? Will her siblings and cousins support her and look out for her? Clary didn't know, she never will until the time comes that she goes to the Academy. Clary couldn't worry about it know though, today was going to be happy, they had gotten something for Iris, and they were going to surprise her with it. All of a sudden the doors to the infirmary burst open. Max was giving his 1 year old brother a piggy back ride. Luke was squealing and laughing as Max ran around the infirmary.
"Max! Please put your brother down!" I scold him. He stops at the side of Iris' bed and puts Luke down. Luke crawls over to Iris, and she takes him into her arms. All of my children have a really good relationship with each other, they barely ever fight and play together and get along well. I think ever since the incident with Iris, Max has been extra protective of her, and always looking out for her. Which is good, Jace and I had a talk with him about it when we found out that our children were accepted to Alicante Academy. We told him that Iris was his responsibility and that he had to look out for her. Max took it very seriously, I know that he will look out for her, yet still has fun and plays with her.
The other kids have been supportive too. Anna and Maggie always come into the infirmary and bring the gigantic dollhouse the girls share and play dolls. Then, at night all the kids come into the infirmary and set up a bunch of tents and watch movies until the parents come in and make them go to bed. Usually, someone snuck into the infirmary and would sleep with Iris, usually Max, Anna, or Maggie. I saw Jace peek into the infirmary, opening the door just a crack, so I could still see him. I turn around to make sure none of the kids saw him. They were busy playing and talking to each other. I motioned to Jace to come in.
"Iris, close your eyes please."
"Why, Mommy?"
"It's a surprise."
She reluctantly closed her eyes and covered them up with her porcelain skin hands. Jace opened the door and quietly wheeled in her present. Jace had a huge smile on his face that matched the ones that had etched their way onto Max and Luke's faces. I couldn't wait for Iris to see her present, she was going to love it. I hope. Jace finally got the present to right where her gaze was going to land on the present. She was literally shaking with excitement, I knew she was very anxious to receive her present. She needed this, the past month has been very hard on her. Iris has been mildly depressed because she loved to run and play, but that was before the accident. I really hope this would excite her and take her out of this depressed state.
Max could also tell that Iris wasn't one hundred percent herself. For a five year old he has started to step up and grow up. I was kind of scared, he was still a kid, he loved to play video games and play with toy soldiers with Tommy, Luke, and Annie. He was still a kid, but he had a side that was serious and was there to protect Iris. We finally got the present into place, and we all looked at each other. We told Iris to open her eyes. She did and gasped. It was a wheelchair, something that we hadn't gotten Iris yet because we wanted her to get used to the fact that see couldn't move her legs. But it wasn't any old, regular wheelchair. It was a wheelchair Magnus designed, so you know it was going to be elaborate. The wheels looked like wheels on an elaborate carriage from the Victorian Era, which were gold. The chair itself was an emerald green that matched her eyes, the material was velvet. The back of the chair would go to the middle of her back. The trim and outline was gold as well. It was like a green velvet chair with gold trim, but it had wheels instead of the back legs, but still had gold front legs, so if she wanted to stop moving she could tilt the chair on them. Iris looked like she had just won the lottery, she looked so happy. The happiness and joy that she always had in her eyes were back.
"Oh, Daddy, Mommy, it's so beautiful! I love it!" She exclaimed.
"You really do?" I ask. She just excitedly nods her head.
"Daddy, I want to try it!" She pleaded. She lifted her arms up and Jace picked her up like she was nothing and placed her in the chair. She immediately relaxed into the velvet as Jace secured her legs into the leg holders. Once they were secured, a smile as big as the moon stretched across her face, she really did love it. One cool thing about the chair, is that over time, as Iris grows, the Chair will grow with her, so she can have it forever. Jace started to teach Iris how to control the chair, and she learned how much force she has to use to push herself around. She had trouble with turns, but by the end of the week, she was pushing herself around the Institute with no trouble at all. She was even giving rides to all the kids, she was finally happy, but the worst was yet to come.
Soo…What did you think?
