Chapter 7: Orientation Decorating Gone Wrong
"My gosh, why does school have to be so long ughh!" Yuffie held her head for a minute as she leaned against Tifa.
"It wasn't so bad… I actually had a chance to speak to Cid Highwind from Biology today." Shera started, looking off dreamily.
Yuffie smiled, "Hahah, Highwind, oh my gosh hear that surname." She laughed…
Immediately Shera snapped, "what's wrong with it?"
Yuffie leaned forward being ever so obnxiously, "it's ridiculous" she teased "tch.. highwind"
"This coming from the girl who fancies a guy whose surname is Valentines. Yeah that's rich" she scowled
"Okay woman, point made" Yuffie paused, "so what's on the agenda this afternoon? I have so much bloody research I might as well feel better now and depress myself later."
"Actually… I have the funniest story for you guys, mm..feeling some Poco's sandwiches..mm, yummy pumpkin soup and brie rolls.." Shera fantasized.
With the evening sunset at it's full height, the trio made themselves to the small café on the beach front; with Tokyo University sitting on a hill which practically glorified itself overlooking the beach, the school had privately owned the surroundings for the next thirty-five miles! Yeah, it was the Hogswart of universities! Ordinarily, the businesses along the stretch prevalently sold food, considering duh it was a school but every so often the campus allowed other types of businesses including swimwear and book supplies.
Pushing open the door of their favourite small time café – Poco Café, the girls indulged themselves with pretty sights of freshly baked sweets and a fine selection of breads too. This place was full of good memories and nostalgia.
"You guys remembered when we use to come here and eat sandwiches and snacks like everyday?" Shera asked…
"Good times… I use to eat like a truckload of those steam wantons. Speaking of, I want some" Yuffie hailed the waiter
"Haha, you were so addicted." Tifa laughed, "and I was addicted to sugar drums" Tifa remembered her favourite candy.
"Oh yeah. What was it again, 39 grams of sugar in a candy?" Yuffie shook her head… "crazy"
"It was never that much" Tifa corrected…
"Yeah Tif, then again you got so high, how in the world would you remember?"
Tifa rolled her eyes.
"So… did you speak to Vinny-sama today?" Yuffie glowed
Tifa took a sip of her of her complimentary tea, "nope. But I'll try tomorrow…"
"Gashh!"
"Have you spoken to your Sephiroth today?" Shera played-around.
Tifa face-faulted, suddenly realizing it was a joke…
"Woah Tiff, relax…" Yuffie patted her hand…
"Sorry.. urh no." Tifa paused, "see I told you he doesn't like me like that…" she explained…
Yuffie shook her head, "honestly you're ridiculous. So big deal he doesn't talk to you today, doesn't mean he doesn't like you. I'm sure he totally does"
"Yuffie, look I'm not into Sephiroth like that" she smiled, "besides… he's not even my type"
"Uh huh whatever you say"
It was now day four of my transformation and truly everything had changed. Every bolted door was now blasted open and opportunities presented themselves more than ever which really satiated me.
Due to the strange timing of classes today, I'd decided to give good old fenrir needed a little run. Grabbing the leather jacket, bag and helmet off the table I ran down to the car park and got myself going before I entered the 8am morning traffic-rush.
The scenery to school wasn't too spectacular considering I lived in the city. Side-note, Tokyo was incredibly beautiful I just happened to live in the ugly part of town. Figures!
As I got closer to school, I noticed a backlog of traffic.
"What in the world?" I tried to peer in the distance. What the heck is going on…
As the traffic slowly trickled forward, I noticed an absurd level of security. Security personnel were scanning school IDs. Speaking of ID did I have mine? Searching through my bag I found my wallet and to my relief my ID.
Pulling out my cellphone I speed-dialed Shera…
"Hello?" Shera answered…
"Are you by chance in school?" Tifa asked, looking at the students who detoured with their cars.
"Nope! I'll be there like around 10, why?" she asked…
"Looks like something went down and they're checking for school ID's…be sure to bring yours"
"Oh snap, wonder what happened" she paused, "anyways I'll pass it on to Yuffie, thanks Tif"
As she approached the guard station, a guard held her off and motioned her through the magnetic reader for weapons. She beeped twice, which was a clear sign she was clean. He then requested her ID which he scanned through a scanner and admitted her access.
Tifa made her way to the carpark, parking her bike in the usual spot. Not almost five minutes on the compound another guard motioned to see her ID. Confused but not willing to entertain a rebuttal she cooperated and handed over her ID which cleared her in.
She couldn't help feeling like whatever was going down was awfully serious. She'd have to find out from some of her classmates the 411.
Absently she ascended the stairs and saw a confusion of students and guards. She could see someone being verbally abused and that's when it hit her – maybe there was a fight on the compound? It was a possibility. Usually security was only high when fights between universities occurred, or weapons were found by students.. or maybe something like event but that was ever very rare
"You know you really should watch where you're walking…" came a smooth slick voice.
Turning her head around, she saw Sephiroth leaning against one the trees.
Her cheeks momentarily went pink but she shook her head, "bad habit" she spoke taking a stand next to him observing the guards and the strange commotion.
"What do you think they're looking for?" she asked, almost concerned that something had happened.
"No clue, but I got my replacement guitar wires confiscated" he paused… "this school has gone to the dogs"
Tifa's phone rang and scrambling through her bag she noticed the number.
"Hello?" she paused, "alright then… okay, bye"… with that she sighed…
Sephiroth with his occult green eyes eyed her expectantly. Tifa hesitated a bit before saying, "twas Shera, she's not coming in today. She couldn't find her id"
"What about your genki friend? Wont she keep you company?" he inquired just momentarily touching his brow.
"I'm pretty sure she doesn't know where her id is either. I think it's in my apartment… " Tifa shook her head…
Sephiroth didn't respond rather he just stared. It wasn't a rather intrusive stare Tifa thought but Sephiroth's eyes held a sorta of disconcerting intimidation about them.
"What are you doing around lunch?" he asked,
"Nothing…" she said before suddenly remembering, "oh wait," she snapped her fingers, "I forgot, I have to help out with the year one's orientation setup…"
"And what time does your classes over today?" he asked taking a glance at his phone.
"Um… 2:15" she answered wondering what Sephiroth had in mind…
"Meet me on the stairs. My classes finish at 2:45…" he informed
Tifa nodded…
It was a few minutes past twelve and I had officially given up trying to understand why I had plagued myself running around this school when there were so many creepers who had not a single good thing to say to me. A bit defenseless and annoyed, I made my way to the auditorium.
On entry I noticed Zack working on a welcome banner. I giggled, poor guy was trying to hang a banner on his own.
Startled by the opened door, he flipped around and fell from the ladder.
"Oh my gosh!" I ran to him… "Are you okay?" I asked alarmed…
Zack thankfully was fine. He collected on the floor with just his back hurting somewhat. I leaned forward to assist him. He however shook it off saying he was made of steel. Men…
"Didn't mean to startle you" I uneasily laughed
He smiled, "it's okay…I wasn't doing a very good job anyway…so, how does the place look?" he asked looking around the half-completed room.
"It looks nice… still needs a feminine touch" I teased…
He laughed, "that's why you're the expert"
"So, do you think the banner is too low?" Zack asked…
"Ehh it's sorta bent" I explained
Zack and I did what we could with adjusting the banner.
It took us a good fifteen minutes to position it and by the time we were convinced we had had it down, we stood back and noticed it was crooked. I giggled but Zack sighed out tiredly.
"This is gonna take forever with just the two of us" he explained opening one of the decoration boxes…
Yup, forever. We would never finish this at the rate we kept going and this was just a banner. Surely we needed help. With that, Zack momentarily left to recruit some of his friends for the orientation setup.
I made myself useful applying decorations to walls and pinning welcome signs on pillars, admittedly things were looking up.
As I approached the stage I could see the sound system lights turned on. I observed Zack's ipod was plugged in. 'He must have been playing music'
Picking up the mp3 player, I could see the song in play was U2 Beautiful Day. As I stood there I thought what a great track – and yes as cheesy and mildly lame it sounds, I thought at one point in time everybody heard this song. Hey classics never die…
Feeling pumped, I rose the volume and loosely found my hips moving to a not-so-rhythmic-rhythm. Topping my really bad dance moves was really bad – wait for it – singing! Yeah, surely I was in some zone because I allowed myself to let go, and lets just say I let go bad. Yeh, it was bad.
So bad, I was closing my eyes and really bringing on the deep masculine tones mixed in with some inner Spice girl of mine, which was distorting when I retrospect on it, but still.. it was bad.
At some point in a person's mind, you'd think they would stop and let it go, stop singing and be a justice to humanity – yeah, that's what she said. Oh the ruin that would follow would be devastating, when the doors of the auditorium blasted open with a group of boys standing by absolutely confused as popsicles.
Had it not been for that one boy who whistled at my poor attempt at a strain that I called a vocal, I would have gone on and on. And yes, I had a nervous breakdown when I discovered group of six boys and Zack found me out. Descending the stairs, I paused the ipod and started almost in frenzy sticking decorations.
"Hey" Zack started
I sighed, yup he was definitely gonna rub it in.
"You sang really well" he smiled.
Oh Zack, you're such a good human, lying to make me feel better…
"Tch-right"
I was about to walk away but this spiky-raven-head man held me in my tracks.
"I'm not kidding. You got skills.."
Somewhere in the middle of our decorating exercise, Bruno Mars started playing and though I'm a strong rock girl, I loved me some Uptown Funk. Long story short we were in a bad music video, everybody sticking decorations, banners still looking bent, singing even worst than mine, but progress was made when everybody was getting down in that auditorium like no tomorrow.
I giggled, because just for minute I realized that as bad of a singer and dancer I was, there were bigger losers than me and that oddly felt good considering I could bust my moves and pretend to be a pro.
"Uptown funk you up…" Zack howled, making his friends chorus in harmony – well what lack of harmony I should say.
"Come on Tifa, lets see you dance" he coerced.
I shook my shoulders, oh well… not even I could deny my great enthusiasm to dance to good tunes.
To be continued…
