A/N: I wish I could keep my word and not write fics where Will is dead, but my muse can't always be controlled. It's still probably better than the fic I haven't written about them right after Will's death. It was too ugly in my head, but you can get glimpses of it in here, even if this fic takes place a year later. I'm going to pretend the day Will died is the date when 5x15 aired.
Not an Ordinary Day
March 23rd 2015
The national and international news of the day hadn't held his attention for too long, so he flipped through the pages to reach the sports section when something made him stop. He closed the paper to check the date on the front. It read March 23rd 2015. He dropped it on the kitchen table as if lightning had struck him.
How could he have forgotten? That must have been the reason why Diane had acted the way she had all weekend. She had been cranky and edgy, and she had been tossing and turning a lot last night. She obviously hadn't forgotten about the day and how could she? Her business partner and best friend had been shot and killed exactly a year ago. Kurt felt utterly ashamed.
He remembered that day as if it had been yesterday.
Her phone call sharing the news with him in a barely audible voice, came in the middle of the day. She was in tears, but she forbade him to go to the office. And he obeyed because he knew she wanted to appear strong in there. He only took her in his arms once she arrived home.
And the next few days she went through hell. There was a lot of crying, the kind he'd never seen from Diane before. Only then did he realize how much she loved Will, how much more than she would probably ever love him. But it only made him love her more. And he was aware that he had to try to fill that void in her heart that Will had left behind.
He had to do something for her today. Nothing was more important than making this day a little more bearable for her. He already knew where to start. He rushed down to the bakery on the corner of their street to bring her favorite doughnuts.
He was back by the time her alarm went off and entered their bedroom with the doughnuts and her mug filled with coffee. She was still lying under the sheets, and showing no sign of wanting to get out. He placed the tray on the nightstand and a kiss on her forehead.
"I've brought you breakfast. You can stay in bed all day if you want." He sat on the side of the bed eyeing her.
"You remembered," she noted and he nodded slightly. "I'll be okay," she added and sat up to reach for the tray and put it in her lap.
"I know." He let a small smile form on his lips as she peeked inside the paper box.
"You shouldn't have." She picked up a chocolate doughnut that obviously made her somewhat happy and he loved seeing that.
"It was the least I could do." He observed her tasting the pastry with a pleased expression. He'd expected it to be harder to feed her this morning.
"Will you come with me to the cemetery in the evening?" she asked after she'd finished the first doughnut and reached for the coffee mug.
"If you want me to," he responded a little surprised. It was the first time she had suggested that.
"I do. I don't think I ever thanked you enough for being there for me." She continued to surprise him with her statement.
"You have," he reassured her. She didn't need to thank him anyway. He had done it all out of love.
"Then I'm saying it again. No one has done that for me in a long time, besides…"
"Will," he finished her sentence. She still had trouble saying his name out loud sometimes.
"Yes," she nodded and reached out to take his hand in hers.
…
She held onto his hand the same way when they entered the cemetery later that day. He hadn't been there since the funeral and when they arrived at Will's gravestone he felt his eyes getting heavy reading his name on it.
He let go off Diane's hand and stepped away to allow her some privacy, but his eyes never left her. She placed the flower next to the gravestone and he could already see tears streaming down her face.
Kurt was aware that he might never understand the love that tied Diane and Will together, and that he hadn't been able to fill the void in her heart, which he probably never will. But he had been there for her all this time and he would continue to do so. He would be there for her for both of them, just like he'd promised Will he would.
And he was thankful for every single day.
