Shattered

I sadly don't own T7S or its characters!

Chapter 7 - Give it up, give it up baby,

Give it up, give it up now, now

How many times can I break till I shatter?

Over the line, can't define what I'm after

I always turn the car around.

Give me a break, let me make my own pattern

All that it takes is some time

But I'm shattered

I always turn the car around

July 5, 1980

Jackie smiled as she crossed off the date on the calendar: July 5, 1980.

She had finished six months of her rehab program on June 28th. She was then given a week to get a plan together for the next few months. She had to decide where she was going to live while she got back on her feet. After several discussions with the Forman's and Fez, she decided she still wasn't ready to go back to Point Place and face Hyde. That was when Laurie offered to let Jackie stay with her while she sorted everything out.

"You ready to face the real world again?" Laurie asked, shaking Jackie from her thoughts.

Jackie turned and smiled at her new friend. "Not really. But I need to do it sooner or later, right?" Jackie said.

"I won't lie, it's scary at first. But you have a wonderful support system, and I know you're going to be just fine. If I can do it, then you can definitely do it," Laurie said.

Jackie then pulled Laurie into a hug. "Thank you for everything over the last six months, for being such a wonderful friend. And thank you for letting me lean on you for the next few coming up," Jackie said.

Laurie hugged her back and grabbed her hand. "We're the only ones who understand this part if our lives. Ok! Let's do this!" Laurie said.

Jackie walked out of the rehab treatment she called home the last six months clutching Laurie's hand. She smiled when she saw the group of people waiting for her outside with balloons, flowers, and chocolates. She looked into the cheering faces of the Forman's, Fez, Donna, Kelso, Brooke, and Betsy.

Brooke and Betsy had started to visit her regularly, since they were so close to the rehab facility. Kelso would come when his work schedule allowed. Brooke knew the baby was Hyde's, but they kept that detail from Kelso for the time being, figuring he would tell Hyde right away if he knew. She allowed Donna to keep visiting, as long as she agreed that she wouldn't tell Hyde she was pregnant.

"Auntie Jackie!" Two year old Betsy cried as she broke free from her mom and ran to her favorite aunt's arms. "Hi Betsy pie!" Jackie said as she pulled Betsy into the tightest hug her belly would allow.

"Damn Jackie, you got really fat in that place!" Kelso exclaimed.

Jackie rolled her eyes and then smiled as she rubbed her belly. He was still a dumbass, that would never change. Even though he called her fat, she couldn't be mad at him, the baby growing in her had saved her life. She couldn't wait to meet the baby in a few months.

"Oh sweetie, we are so stinkin proud of you!" Mrs. Forman exclaimed as she pulled Jackie into a hug. Jackie smiled and hugged her surrogate mother back. Red then grunted his praise as he pulled her into a hug as well. Donna was next, and Fez was last.

He handed her the box of chocolates he got for her. "I got hungry on the way here, so half are gone." He said apologetically. Jackie smiled and hugged him. Some things would never change.

Hyde sighed as he looked up at the calendar on the wall in his office. It was July 5th. He knew today was the day Jackie was getting out of rehab.

After he went to visit Jackie, he came home and went on a bender for a week. After one of the worst hangovers of his life, he decided he it was time to grow up and change his life. If he ever hoped to have a chance with Jackie after she was done with rehab, he needed to be clean himself. He threw out all the beer that he owned, and smoke the last of his stash. It was a surreal moment went his roach went out, but he knew it was for the best.

From that day forward, he threw himself into his work at the record store. Donna and Fez started hanging out with him more at the record store since he would be there late into the night. He could tell they were happy with the changes he was making, they were all starting to slowly grow up, whether they wanted to or not.

Hyde tried calling Jackie a few times after that. Each time he called, she wouldn't take his calls. He even tried to visit her once, but she refused to see him. She was being serious about wanting to do this without him. He just wanted her to know that he was also cleaning him up his life.

After he gave up trying to contact Jackie, he got his updates from Donna. He knew she was doing well, and he was proud of her. That's how he knew today wad the day she was getting out. He had made a comment to Donna about going with everyone to see her, but Donna demanded that he stay home. He knew Donna was right, and there he sat at the record store, while everyone important in his life was in Chicago.

Hyde walked out of his office and into the store where Leo was standing at the cash register staring at the people shopping.

"Hey Leo," Hyde said as he walked up to him.

"Hey, Hyde man! How are you? You look sad, man," he said.

"Yea, I guess I might be a bit sad," Hyde said. "I miss Jackie," he admitted. He didn't mind admitting things to the hippie, he never remembered most of things he was told.

"Jackie? Oh loud girl!" Leo exclaimed as the wheels started to turn in his head. "You love loud girl, man," Leo said.

"Yea Leo, maybe I do," Hyde said.

It felt good to admit it to someone, even if that someone would forget in five minutes time.

One Month Later - August 5, 1980

Jackie sighed with frustration as she parked Laurie's car outside of Brooke and Kelso's house. She had been job searching for the last month with no success. It was obvious that no one wanted to hire someone that was as pregnant as her, and who looked like she could burst at any moment.

She struggled out of the car and waddled up to the back porch of the house. She was so over being pregnant, and couldn't wait to have the baby. She felt like she was getting bigger by the minute and was extremely uncomfortable.

She let herself into the back door like she had been doing for the last month, and called out for Brooke. "Brooke, do you have any more of those maternity pants? I feel like I'm growing by the minute and I'm so uncomfortable!" She yelled. She walked to the front of the house and into the living room looking for her friend and stopped in her tracks when she saw who was in the living room. Brooke and Kelso were not alone. Hyde sat on their couch, and it was too late he had seen her.

"Steven!" She gasped.

"Jackie," he said.

They stared at each other for what felt like hours. Hyde was the first to break the silence.

"What the fuck Jackie?" He blew up.

"Steve, I can explain," Jackie started.

"Explain what? That you conveniently forgot to tell me that you're pregnant? And that you made all of our friends lie to me about it?" He said.

"Wait a minute – HYDE'S the father?" Kelso said.

"See, Michael didn't know you were the father," Jackie pointed out.

"Not the point Jackie," he said.

"Steven, I had my reasons," Jackie said as she crossed her arms over her chest.

"Oh, please, do tell," he said. "I can't wait to hear this."

"Steven, I felt that if you knew about this, you would assume I did it on purpose and would just bail like always. And at the time, my fragile state of mind couldn't take the rejection from you."

Everyone in the room waited for Hyde's response. He stood in front of Jackie, arms crossed, jaw clenched. He stared at her after her confession. He then turned on his heel and started to walk away.

"And right now, you're proving my point!" Jackie yelled.

"I wouldn't have left you Jackie. I was ready to be with you, and I would have taken care of you every step of the way. You just didn't give me the chance. And that sucks, Jackie."

He then turned around and walked out.

August 7, 1980

A few days later Jackie was sulking in Laurie's apartment. Hyde still hadn't called her. The heartbreak she had been trying to avoid over the last seven months had still happened. Even though she knew he would find out eventually and probably bail, it still hurt.

She heard a knock on the door, and she got up to answer the door, even though she knew she looked horrible. She was shocked at who was standing in her doorway once she opened the door.

"Mom!" She gasped.

"Hello Jackie. You look horrible. You don't pull pregnancy off as well as I did," Pam said as she breezed into the apartment.

"Thanks mom, nice to see you too. Come in," she said as she closed the door. "So, what brings you here mom?"

"Oh, that boy Steven Hyde sent me," she said.

Jackie's mouth fell open at her mother's words. "Excuse me?" She said.

"Yes, he came to the house yesterday and asked me to come. I actually ran into him at AA a few months ago, and he filled me in on everything. Jackie dear, why didn't you come to me sooner?" Her mother asked with hurt in her eyes.

"No offense mom, but I don't think you were in the right state of mind to help an addict," Jackie said. "And you went to AA? And ran into Steven there?" Jackie felt like she was living in an alternate reality.

"You're probably right. I started going to AA meetings to meet men. But once I ran into Steven there, and he told me what was happening with you, it opened my eyes. I started to take AA seriously, and cleaned myself up. Steven made me see that if I wanted my daughter back in my life, I was going to need to be clean. And Jackie, I do love you, I want my daughter and my grand baby in my life."

"Wow," Jackie breathed out. "Now, why did Steven go to you yesterday?"

"He came flying into the house ranting and raving about the fact that you were pregnant, and that you were being stubborn about coming home because you had nowhere to go. Once I got over the shock of you being pregnant, I realized how upset he was that you were staying here, instead of going home. He asked me to help. To bring you home," Pam explained.

"Mom, how can you help me?" She asked. "I can't trust you,"

"Yes you can, sweetie. Once I sobered up, I got back into real estate, and I'm doing pretty well. Come home, move in with me. I'll start training you in the industry so you can have a career for yourself and give your baby the life it deserves," Pam said.

Jackie sat for a moment, her hand on her stomach as her baby kicked. She smiled to herself, taking it as a sign. What her mom was doing, was what a mom should be doing. She decided to take the chance. After all she always had the Forman's to fall back on if needed.

"Ok mom, let's go home," Jackie said with a smile.

August 25, 1980

The Forman house was abuzz with excitement. After a long year away, Eric was finally coming home from Africa.

Jackie smiled as she watched Hyde and Fez hang decorations in the Forman living room. She would never admit it out loud, but she had missed the scrawny nerd. She knew Donna was excited as well. They had reconciled over the phone shortly after the New Year, and had been keeping in touch with letters and phone calls. He was up to speed on what a whacky year it had been since he decided to jet off to Africa.

Jackie let out a grunt as she eased herself into Red's chair. Hyde was by her side in seconds.

"Are you ok?" He asked her.

"Yes, Steven. Just very uncomfortable," Jackie said.

Jackie's due date was still a few weeks away, but her doctor told her that she could have the baby any day. Once Hyde had been told the news, he had had been on edge ever since.

Jackie was still keeping Hyde at bay for the timer being. He had been nothing but wonderful since she had returned home with her mom. She had to admit that she loved he had gone to her mom to find a solution to bring her home. He helped her move all her stuff to her mom's house. He then came by every day after work, made her dinner, and would rub her feet or back while she told him about her mom showing her the ropes of the real estate world. She was pleasantly surprised that he had stuck around and didn't run away. She still wasn't giving him her heart again though.

"They're on their way! Oh my gosh, they're on their way! Mr. Forman called from the airport a few minutes ago! My baby boy is almost home!" Mrs. Forman cheered as she jumped up and down. Jackie smiled at her enthusiasm. She was so excited to her son.

Everyone waited nervously for Eric, Red, and Donna to walk through the door. Kelso and Fez played slapsies, while Brooke fussed with some decorations. Jackie played with Betsy's hair, while Hyde played with Jackie's. Mrs. Forman and Pam kept bringing out more and more food. They all looked up when the front door opened.

Red was the first to walk in, looking like his grumpy self.

"The dumbass has arrived home," he said. Donna and Eric then walked in, arms around each other. Everyone then rushed to the door to greet him, minus Jackie, who would have had a hard time getting up off the chair. She waited his turn for him to come to her.

After several minutes, he walked over to her chair. "Devil," he greeted her with a smirk. "Nerd," she teased back. She pushed herself out of her chair to hug him, but a yelp escaped her mouth instead. Hyde was by her side in seconds.

"Jackie, what's wrong," he asked alarmed,

"I…I think my water just broke!" She said.

Everyone was in action right away, helping Jackie out and into the car.

"Damn, Jackie really does know how to ruin a party!" Kelso complained as he followed everyone out the door.

It had been a long, hard labor for Jackie. After 20 hours of labor and pushing, a beautiful baby girl was brought into the world. Jackie wept with happiness when they announced she was a perfectly healthy 7 pounds and 2 ounces.

When asked for the baby girl's name, Jackie didn't even hesitate. Katherine Pam Hyde would be the name. Both Mrs. Forman and Pam had been in the room with her, and were touched and shed tears over the name.

The baby was brought out the room shortly after, and Jackie welcomed the sleep after the longest day of her life. She was still sleeping when one of the nurses brought Katherine into the room. Hyde had been dozing in the chair next to her when he heard the nurse come in the room.

"I can bring her back to the nursery," the nurse said.

Hyde shook his head. "I'll take her," he said.

The nurse placed Katherine in his arms and he stared at her in wonder. He couldn't believe he had helped make her. She was perfect. And he couldn't believe the instant connection he felt with the baby girl. How could his own mother ever leave him was beyond him. Here she was, a few hours old, and he felt overwhelmingly protective of her, and felt like he never wanted to leave her side.

Jackie stirred, and opened her eyes to see Hyde staring at his daughter. She smiled sleepily at the site. He didn't know she was awake, and it was a sweet moment for her to witness.

"Hey there baby girl. I'm your dad. And I can already say that, I love you more than anything. Just don't tell your mom that."

I always turn the car around

Don't wanna turn that car around

I gotta turn this thing around
