Chapter 7: First Day on the Job

Boston, Massachusetts

Sarah Weller was at work in the crime lab, the forensic expert had just received evidence a few days ago from her FBI friend Oliver who asked her to look at what he found during the course of an investigation he was doing before being sent to Miami.

It had only arrived yesterday and she worked the night shift, so she had only been working a few hours into the night when she was examining what she was sent. The contents of the package were a few empty shell casing, videos of the night the crime occurred, as well as a broken vial used to transport a deadly virus.

The items were from various cases that Oliver had been working on before he died, so Sarah did this for her recently discovered dead friend before she was have to hand it over to the Checkmate taskforce. As she was doing this a few of her colleagues outside of the room she worked in, were preparing to leave for the night.

As Sarah continued her work on the evidence, the blissful quiet that once possessed by the rattling of gun fire. As her head looked from her work in horror, she could see one of her colleagues dead on the floor out in the hallway. As she looked out through the corner of the door way she could see continued to hear the gunfire as she saw a man walking up.

Sarah quickly runs back into her lab, grabbing the notes and recording she had taken of the evidence, before taking cover under one of the nearby desks. Everything was quiet for her after that, the quiet would only last for a few seconds but it felt like hours to her, before she could see a pair of feet walking through the room.

It stopped in front of the counter where she had left the evidence; Sarah could practically see the smoking barrel of an M4A1. Peering her head to look up she could also see a maverick model 88 Mossberg 500 shot gun that had been sheathed on the figures back. Then as quickly as the murderous figure entered, it left the room.

Leaving Sarah horrified after he was gone, and she was left surrounded by the dead bodies of her coworkers after she climbed out from under the desk. Her hands doing their best not to tremble and she pulls out her phone to call 9-1-1.

Quantico, Virginia

Emily found her way to the door of the loft where Sean was supposed to be staying. It had only been two days since he left Miami and she had not heard from him since, so she was not sure as to whether he was settled in yet or not.

She did not expect for him to be in for a few more days, but then Hotchner told her to go retrieve him and bring him back with her.

As she knocks on the door of the loft, Sean was still asleep in bed when he heard it, waking him from a dreadful nightmare. He woke up in an instant, still feeling the same fright and fear that he felt in his dream and the suddenness of it caused his body to jolt up.

It only took him a few seconds to realize what it was before hearing another knock on the door, making him groan as he sits himself on the edge of the bed. Looking up as there was a third knock on the door and he say "Who is it?"

"Sean, it's me." He heard a woman's voice say. He recognized it as Emily's, but could not help but to mess with her a bit as he replies "Me who?"

"Sean open the door." Emily replied. Sean was chuckling a little as he begins walk up to the door and opens it up for her, he always was able to get a kick or two out of teasing her. The two were then finally face-to-face with one-another.

Sean was quiet as they looked at each other before she says "Come on and get dressed. I need to take you down to the office."

"I thought I wasn't supposed to come in until my next week?" Sean asked, still tired from not having nearly as much sleep as he had wanted. Emily once again saw the scars on his body as she was standing outside the door before saying "You were, but when I got into work today Hotchner said to bring you in for a case we have to do."

Sean was suspicious as to whether this was an Archangel case, but then shook it off before agreeing to get dressed. Emily follows him inside as he walks back in to get his things. As Sean fits on his shirt, Emily took notice that there was not much in the loft. Along with his clothes there was only a small table holding up the TV, the small box from his previous home, and pieces of paper used for painting and drawing.

"Am I allowed to have a gun on me, or is that only for you guys?" He asked Emily, holding up his shoulder holster that contained his Para-Ordnance 1911 pistol. Emily was quick to elaborate for his question "You've been cleared to carry a fire arm, so you should be okay with it."

Taking what had just been said as an okay, Sean straps on the holster before grabbing his black denim jacket. As he throws on his jacket, Emily was near the small box he had in the room. It was open so it was pretty easy for her to see what was inside, mostly a very small collection of pictures and two wedding rings.

The rings caused her focus to stray away from Sean as he puts on his jacket, and then finally she hears his voice "Okay let's get going, Emily."

Emily was not paying the full attention she need to as was unable to hear him speak, so he says in a loud pitch "Emily." Only this time she hears him and looks back to him and she says "Yes,"

"Let's get going. I'm ready." He said, he was near the door as he said this and Emily followed him out before closing the door and locking it behind them as they left.

Sean followed behind Emily as she led him to her car; he soon takes his place in the passenger side while Emily is in the driver seat and begins driving.

During the drive Sean was quiet for most of it, not making a single sound.

BAU Headquarters, Virginia

Sean had been separated from Emily after they found their way to the building, the separating part happening on the way in, and eventually he found his way to a big room in the building that was like a lobby for agents to wait in.

He hated the idea of waiting around and doing nothing, but all he could do was wait for Emily to show up once more. Then he could get on with the day ahead of him. Unfortunately as he was waiting around in the room, standing against the walls, he caught the attention of one of the nearby FBI agents.

Tyler Finn, one of the FBI agents, he saw Sean standing in the room and there was just something about Sean that rubbed him the wrong way. He looked out of place in the area of men in suits. So he walks up to him, trying to see if he would tell him anything by asking him "Excuse me; can I help you with something?"

Sean was distant from the agent as he came up to him, taking an immediate dislike to the man. Finn repeats the question and Sean replies "No, no, I'm just perusing while waiting for a friend."

Since fist seeing Sean, Tyler had a certain feeling about him that looked familiar; and there was more than just the feeling that he did not like him, but that he recognized him for some reason and then it hit him like a nail on the head "Your Sean Pierce."

"That's me. Who are you?" Sean replied, as he remained against the wall in comfort with his arms crossed. Tyler soon says to the reply "You were a suspect in Oliver and Chloe's murder."

Sean was quick to defend himself against the accusation he resented "Wrongfully accused and free as a bird, so why don't you buzz off before that mouth of yours costs you a tooth or two." Sean did not like the man talking to him, knew that from the get go moment they started talking. The tone he was having did not make it any easier.

"Alright smart-ass how about you come with me?" Then the agent reaches his hand forward to grab Sean's arm, but he quickly frees his arm and viciously pushes him back "You'll keep your hands off me."

When Tyler was looking at Sean as his hand was pushed away the holstered weapon under Sean's jacket could be seen and he shouts "Gun!" before reaching for his own. There was not much time for Sean to reach for his, nor did he want to. He simply grabs Tyler and uses one of his legs to make him lose his footing and then floors him as he pushes down with his hand. He looks down at him as he resumes his standing position "Come on mate; give it a bit more effort. I prefer enjoying a fight."

Emily was finally able to get through to the room they were in just in time to see Sean floor Tyler and soon other agents try to subdue him, but Sean quickly knocked three of them to the ground. Emily quickly broke up the fighting "Stop, Sean calm down!"

The fighting between Sean and multiple agents came to an end when he kicks one last agent to the ground and Emily asks "What the hell is going on?" the other agents were as a loss for words as some of them were still on the ground trying to understand what just happened to them. Sean was the first to say anything as he pointed to Finn "Ask this prick who started it."

Emily looks over to Tyler and says in confusion "Tyler?" Tyler and she shared looks for a second before she asks "What did you do?" Tyler was quick to defend himself as he starts to pull himself up "I didn't start anything, he was having an attitude with me and I saw his gun. Next thing I know I'm on the ground with him looking down at me."

Tyler and Emily were previously in a relationship before she left for Miami and things had been awkward between them ever since. Emily being the one who broke off the relationship was not too happy to see him again, having heard he was being transferred to another office.

Emily looks over to Sean who still had his weapon holstered and then sees Tyler's on the ground and says "Okay, all of you go back to whatever you were doing; and Sean just wait by the door."

Tyler was in anger as he speaks to Emily "What is he doing here? He's the one they accused of killing Oliver." Emily was quick to defend Sean "No, he's not. Sean is our new Liaison with the Checkmate task force."

Tyler was quick to ask her why she was referring to him by his first name and she replies "He's an old friend of mine." Tyler immediately becomes obviously jealous as he takes notice to the look in her eyes when she saw him and asks "Are the two of you…." He was never able to finish the question as she cuts his sentence short having developed intolerance to his jealousy "Tyler, I really don't have time for this. Just… get back to work."

She could see the grin on Sean's as she walks over to him; she knew that look, the kind he used to give when they were at the FBI academy and he would tease her "Don't start Sean." Her friend was quick to shrug his shoulders as he says "I didn't say anything."

He then begins to chuckle as they walk and asks "So what, he's your ex-boyfriend?"

"What make you think he's my ex?" she asks as they near the room where the others were waiting for them "I may not be one of you precious behavior profilers, but I can read facial expressions and body language. You were not in a particularly happy mood to see him, and the look on his face showed that he was not particularly glad to hear you saying my first name."

She had to give him some credit for recognizing it before they finally arrived at the office room where they found the team waiting with a new face. Sean was able to recognize him by the short-cut dark brown hair and the side holster holding a Kimbler 1911 "Kimbler warrior" pistol.

"Crane," Emily heard him say before the two were hugging like two brothers who have not seen each other in forever. The man he called Crane then grabs a hold of his shoulders "Look at you, all cleaned and civil. I imagined you being all scruffy and edgy."

"What are you doing here?" Sean asked. Then Emily asks as she breaks up the little reunion "You two know each other?"

Sean then took the time to introduce her to the man "Emily, this is my friend Gabriel Crane. He was one of these CIA agents we were given to work with on the Archangel case." Then Sean turns back to Gabriel as he begins to answer his previous question "I'm actually here to see you lot, I have a case a few miles up the road and I could really use some profilers on the case."

"What's the case?" Emily asked, her eyes looked to the team for an answer but there was none to be found. The only answer came from Crane in an ambiguous fashion "A virus break-out, the Ivo virus."

Emily did not recognize the name, but she could tell by the expression of Sean's face that he did as he said "That's impossible."
