Best friends

That same night Randy ended up falling asleep and Adam didn't want to wake him so he just let him sleep on the couch. A little later that night Randy's mother came home. "Hi Miss Orton."

"Hey Adam." She said. "I got worried when you two didn't show up tonight. We had to leave because it got too late."

"I didn't want to wake him because he's finally getting some sleep." Adam said. "Is he okay?"

"Yeah he's fine." She said. "I didn't want to leave John's mother there alone so I stayed with her until they told us we had to go."

"Well I have to get home." Adam said getting up. "Um can you tell him to call me when he wakes up."

"Yeah." She said. "And thanks for staying with him and I hope you feel better."

Adam smiled. "Yeah me too, I'm tired of staying home in my room all day." He left Randy's house and headed home.

Julies went over to her son knelt down in front of him. "Hey baby."

Randy woke up and was meet with his mother. "Hey are you just getting home?" He asked sitting up.

"Just now." Julies said. "Adam had to go home but I just came from the hospital."

"Why didn't you tell me about John having to go into surgery this morning?" Randy asked rubbing his face.

"Because I know you." Julies said. "And I know the way you would have reacted but there is nothing to worry about. John is okay and I promise that I will take you to see him tomorrow but can you just get some sleep."

Randy nodded stood up and headed up to his room. Stripping down to his boxers he got under his covers and fell asleep a few minutes later.

...

"Mom I home!" Adam yelled walking through front door. His mom called out to him from the kitchen so he headed that way. "What's for dinner?" He said going over to the pot.

"Don't tough or you're going to get everyone sick." His mother Grace said. "So how is Randy holding up?"

"Okay I guess." Adam said. "I hated to leave him like that though."

"Well I hope John pulls through this." Grace said. "You father won't be home until late so why don't you get cleaned up for dinner."

Adam coughed in his arms a few times before heading upstairs. When he got to the bathroom he took some cough medicine. After washing his face and hands he headed back to the kitchen with his mom.

The next day

Randy was sitting in John's hospital room, his head rested on the bed near John's hand as he watched as his chest rose and fell. "You got to be better Johnny." He said. "I can't lose you, you're my best friend." He closed his eyes and thought back on his car accident.

A few years ago

John sat by Randy's bedside, holding his hand. "You have no idea how much I hate this. I miss talking to you, I miss your voice." He looked up when he heard a groggy voice call his name. He stood up and smiled when his eyes met Randy's. "Hey you."

Randy smiled sleepy. "Hi you."

"You have no idea how crazy it's been here without you." John wiped his face with his free hand.

"How long have you been here?" Randy asked.

"Since this morning." John said. "I been here every morning since they brought you in and I stayed until they told me I had to go. There was no way I was leaving you in here alone. Adam has been bugging me to go home but I just couldn't leave my best friend."

Randy felt himself slipping back into sleep. "You're my best friend too." Was the last thing he said before drifting back to sleep.

John sighed and sat back down, still holding Randy's hand he smiled. "Love you."

...

Randy had heard how John was when he got in that car accident and now he was doing the same thing. He groaned and buried his face in the sheets.

"You look just like me back then." John grumbled out.

Randy's head shoot up. "Oh my god John." He placed his hand on John's chest but quickly pulled away. "Sorry sorry I forgot." He smiled. "I just I'm so happy to hear your voice."

"How long have I been out?" John asked.

"Not long." Randy wiped his face and sighed. "Hey you."

"Hi." John said smiling. "What else happened?"

Randy's smile faded and he looked down. "They killed him, right on front of me."

"Are you okay?" John asked.

Randy shook his head. "All this is my fault John. I started seeing Cody because a part of me fell bad for him and another part wanted to...I don't know make you jealous. In the end I got him killed and I got you shot, John I'm so sorry-"

"Stop." John said. "None of this was your fault, all this was an accident okay."

Randy nodded. "Okay."

"I love you." John said.

Randy smiled and looked over at John. "I love you too."

John sighed. "I would kiss you but I sort of can't move."

Randy laughed, leans up and kisses John. "I'm so glad you're okay, you had everyone worried."

"I figured they would." John said. "They were that way with you."

Randy looked down. "So I talked to Cody's father and he that their having a funeral soon and I was going to go. I know you won't be able to come but Adam said that he will go with me."

"Are you nervous about going?" John asked.

Randy nodded. "A little."

"Don't be, everything is going to be okay." John pulled Randy's hand close to him and kissed it. "You'll see."

"Always Mr. Positive." Randy said looking over at him. "So you forgive me."

John sighed. "I told you that you don't have to do that."

"Just say you forgive me, please." Randy said wiping his face again.

"I forgive you." Replied John. "Now can we please talk about something else?"

Later that same day

"I'm serious he acted the exact same way you did when he was in the hospital." Adam said. "Why is that?"

John shrugged. "We just don't like it when either one of us gets hurt."

"So what about me?" Adam said. "I mean I know we haven't been best friends since we were kids but I always thought of you and Randy like the brothers I never had."

"If you were in a situation like this I would be worried like crazy too." John said. "I think of you as a brother too and I know that Randy does too."

"Uh huh." Adam said. "I think you're just saying that."

"I'm serious." John said.

"Thanks." Adam said.

"What are you guys talking about?" Randy asked coming back into the room. He walked to the other side of John and sat down. "Were you guys talking about me?"

"No we were talking about me." Adam said. "But lets talk about you two. Now that all this is over you two are officially dating?"

"I guess we are." Randy said smiling. "It feels kind of awkward, dating your best friend."

"It won't be awkward forever." Adam said. "Looking back at when I first met you two I thought you two were dating. You'll be okay and you really do make the cutest little couple."

"Now we have to find you a girlfriend." Randy said looking over at him.

"I don't need a girlfriend." Adam replied.

"Yes you do and maybe it will take you our of your sour mood." Randy said.

"I'm not in a sour mood." Adam said. "I just don't have time for a relationship."

"You need to get laid." Randy nearly shouted.

"No I don't." Adam said sitting up. "I just can think of a lot of better stuff I can do."

John just smiled and watched Adam and Randy bickered back and forth.
