Ch.7

The pulsating, repetitive beat of techno music awoke me from my unconsciousness. My body was on fire from aching, but cold against the brick wall that supported my weight as I tried to stand. Taking a look around at my surroundings, I realized I was in the alley way of a popular club in downtown L.A. Once I got to my feet I felt the affects of what I would assume be the heavy amounts of alcohol I had consumed earlier that day, before nightfall fell. I cupped my hand over my mouth and exhaled. Yeah, I was pretty wasted. My head felt as though it was going to explode, it literally felt like it had been ripped open. I placed my hand on top of my head and brought it down into my line of sight, there was blood. Great. Reaching around to my back pocket for my phone, I find that it is no longer there. Slowing I reached for the other pocket to find that my wallet is missing as well. Seems as though I have been mugged.

God this whole standing thing was really starting to hurt, and with every pulse of my heart I felt my head begin to hurt worse. Hoping that my cars keys hadn't been jacked I fondled the inside of jacket pocket to find that they were still there. There was a silver lining here. I stumbled further down the alley way and pressed the unlock button on my keys once I reached the street. Out of the corner of my eye I see my car light up. Once I reached my car i noticed that the windshield was smashed in, and at the current state I was in, driving was out of the question.

Underneath the lighting of the street lamps, I spy a payphone. Reaching into all of pockets I become more angry when I come up with no change at all, with this discovery I was left with no other decision but to walk. I walked about three blocks before I saw a waffle house. Maybe they would let me use there phone. My head pains became excruciating as I approached the couner of the waffle house.

"Excuse me, Ms. I've been mugged, my car was smashed in, and I have a pretty serious head injury. Can I please use your phone?"

Quickly she rushed me into a booth to sit down and grabbed me a cup of coffee, before grabbing the company phone and handing it over to me, asking if I needed anything else. I thanked her kindly and continued to call the only number I had memorized.

Bright white lights blinded me as I opened my eyes. I heard the steady beeping of hospital equipment around me, and I somewhat relaxed. Shifting my gaze to my right I saw a sleeping Kyla in what looked to be a very uncomfortable chair. As if she felt my eye on her she shifted and woke up, immediately coming to my side.

"Hey Ash, how you feeling?" She asked as she grabbed my hand in hers and squeezed tightly. I touched the top of my head and instantly winced. "Yeah, um you had to get seventeen stitches, you had a pretty big gash."

"At least the pain is almost gone," I half-heartedly laughed.

"Yeah, they have you on a pretty good cocktail of pain meds. Have to say I'm kind of jealous," she laughed slighty which caused a smile to break across my face.

"Once we break this popsicle stand I'll share."

She handed me a cup that contained water and stroked my leg softly.

"You should drink up. You were pretty drunk when I brought you in," She hesitated for a minute before she began again, "You really scared me Ashley. What the hell happened?"

I shrugged my shoulders, honestly not knowing what happened between me leaving my apartment after talking with Spencer and then waking up in the alley. Then my heart sank, remembering what Spencer told me, how could she?

"I honestly don't know Ky. All I can be sure of is that I was mugged. Luckily I didn't have that much on me, just a couple hundred dollars."

"What caused you to get so wasted? I mean I get it, it's friday night but you were twice over the legal limit here Ash."

I rapidly shake my head back and forth as I remember exactly why I was so wasted.

"Look Ky, I'm really tired and I don't want to talk about right now if that is ok with you?"

She nodded her head before she removed herself from my bed and took her place back in the old chair she was previously sleeping in. "So, what do you want to talk about Ash? You did drag me out of bed at four in the morning," She said with light amusement in her voice. As soon as I opened my mouth to speak, Spencer came walking in, worry written all over her face. I sat up straighter and glared at her, which caused her to stop about a foot away from my bed.

"What are you doing here?" I seethed.

"Kyla called me and told me what happened, I came to see if you were ok."

"Yeah, well as you can see I'm fine. You can leave now!"

"Ash, please just listen to me-"

"I said leave!"

Tears welled up in her eyes as she turned and ran out of the room. I palmed my face, just rubbing at it. Why couldn't things be easy? I guess it is true what they say, when it rains, it pours.

"So I'm guessing your talk didn't go so well? But I must say I thought Spencer would be the one mad at you," Kyla siad with eyebrows raised.

I bring my hands down from my face and look at her in the eyes. I had to tell her.

"Look Ky, there is something I need to tell you. Something I should have told you years ago, but there was some new light shed on the situation that even surprised me." I paused slightly and swallowed the lump in my lump before continuting, "In high school when Spencer and I started to have sex, we forgot about a condom. She told me that it was just a scare, that she wasn't pregnant." Tears were coming down my face at this piont, but I had to continue she had to know. "Well, Spencer told me today that it wasn't a scare. That after we had sex for the first time, I got her pregnant. But instead of telling me, so we could figure everything out, so we could have a family. She got an abortion. She didn't even tell me until now. She killed my baby Ky."
