Chapter 7
Ethan arrived at the ED in record timing and rushed to reception.
"Connie's office." Noel told Ethan without him even having to speak.
Ethan was becoming more confused and concerned as time went on, he knocked on the office door and went in. He frowned as he was not greeted by Connie but by Robyn sitting with Cal on the sofa in the office. Cal was swaying slightly where he sat hiccupping every so often. He was leaning forwards with his arms propping him up on the tops of his legs which between them on the floor was a bucket where he had quite clearly thrown up. Robyn was sat at his side with her arm around his back trying her best to provide some sort of comfort to the young man but it clearly wasn't working.
"Doctor Hardy." Ethan didn't have the chance to react to the scene in front of him before his clinical lead appeared behind him. She gestured for him to walk in allowing her to follow and close the door behind them.
"What the hell Cal?" Ethan sighed. "How much have you managed to pour down you neck in the few hours you've been out?"
Cal looked up at him then back down to the floor.
"He's been like this since we got him in here. He seems very spaced out." Robyn commented.
"Yes. We've done a blood test but the results will take a while. Don't know what people are capable of doing to themselves when they are in self-destruct." Connie commented.
"Cal wouldn't have taken anything." Ethan shook his head. "What happened? How did he end up here?"
"I had a call from upstairs, he had got himself into a state then went upstairs and demanded to see his daughter. One of the student nurses obviously said the wrong thing. Told him the foetus wasn't there anymore and he went ballistic. Smashing the place up." Connie explained.
Ethan was annoyed that Cal had gone to the pub but sighed as he felt sorry for him, he'd obviously just wanted his child.
"Is this your way of coping Cal?" Ethan crouched beside where his brother was so he could make eye contact. "Not the best way to go about it. Harriet is going to kill you."
"I think the best thing for doctor Knight right now is his bed, plenty of fluids and some support. He might feel rough in the morning but don't let him take anything for it, not until I get his bloods back. Just in case." Connie warned him.
Ethan nodded as she left the room. "Thanks for looking after him Robyn." Ethan thanked the young nurse.
"It's fine, you all need friends at time like this. I hope you feel better soon Cal. I will check up on you tomorrow." Robyn squeezed Cal's shoulder before leaving the brothers alone.
"Right then. Let get you home to bed." Ethan spoke and held his brother's arm helping him to stand.
"Are you mad?" Cal mumbled.
"Not really, I just wished you'd have went to someone instead of the pub." Ethan told him. "Did you take anything?"
"I was drinking vodka straight for about two hours…nothing else." Cal told him as he swayed slightly.
"OK." Ethan nodded, he felt he could believe him.
Ethan guided Cal very slowly to the car before helping him into the passenger seat where he rested his head back and closed his eyes.
"I don't feel great." He spoke quietly.
"You dare vomit in here and you will be cleaning it tomorrow hangover or not." Ethan warned him and drove them steadily back to the flat.
Once there Cal was helped out of the car and indoors before straight into Ethan's room and onto his bed.
"Not my bed…" Cal frowned.
"No, Harriet is in there and you're not sharing with her in this state." Ethan told him sternly. "Now rest I will get you some things from downstairs. Get changed."
Ethan left Cal to change while he went and filled a bottle with water for him and also a bucket for when the inevitable begun. He headed straight back up to find his brother in just his boxers and a tshirt laid on his bed. He looked so small, even though in reality he was much bigger than Ethan. Cal needed looking after, no matter how much he might like to deny it.
"Why?" Ethan asked as he walked in placing the water and bucket at his side.
"Hmm?" Cal looked at him.
"The drink? Then going to the hospital." Ethan sighed.
"I needed something to numb the pain. But it made it worse. Then I just wanted to hold my baby girl again. They had got rid of her. Like she wasn't even a person…" Cal's eyes began to fill. "I just want things to be ok again. I hate feeling like this. It isn't me."
Ethan put his hand on Cal's arm as a form of comfort. "Just don't resort to that again, it will get easier. It may not feel like it can now but it will."
"You're right, it doesn't feel like it." Cal spoke and rubbed his hand over his face. "Just when my life was on the up, it's gone down hill again."
"Your life was never down hill Cal." Ethan shook his head.
"You weren't around the few years I was away…" Cal told him.
"What do you mean? You loved being away, didn't you?" Ethan looked at his older brother confused.
"It's a different story." He closed his eyes and rolled onto his side.
Ethan took the hint and rubbed his brother's arm a little. "I will see you in the morning. Try and have a decent sleep." He spoke before leaving the room.
Whilst closing the door Harriet appeared out from Cal's room.
"What's going on?" She asked quietly.
"He had a bit too much to drink. Drowning his sorrows I think." Ethan told her. "Went to the hospital demanding to see his daughter."
"Oh god…" Harriet sighed.
"He was very spaced out when I got to the hospital. I'm not sure if he was just intoxicated and in his own world or if he had taken something… they've done a blood test." He explained.
"Drugs?" She looked at him shocked. "This is all my fault. I shouldn't have pushed him away."
"No, it's not. Cal has coped in the wrong way, he did the wrong thing but he will certainly learn his lesson come the morning." He sighed a little.
"Is he that bad? I need to see him…" Harriet spoke going for the door.
"I wouldn't. Just give him some time. Talk to him in the morning." He smiled reassuringly.
"Alright." Harriet agreed and headed back to bed leaving Ethan to go down to the sofa with a spare blanket.
Just thought I would let you all know that my friend that this happened to is absolutely fine. The miscarriage part is the only part that is based on what happened to her. The aftermath is very loosely based on her but everything else is my own writing. Let me know what you think of this fic, Im not 100% sure on it to be honest. J x
