Chapter Seven: The Game's Over
She felt her head pounding like a beating drum. By the time Momo woke up, she sat up, finding herself sleeping in her futon. "It's morning," Hinamori said. "Toshiro must have carried me home."
Noticing a single sheet of paper and a box of painkillers right next to her, the raven haired girl picked up the paper and read it:
Take your medicine. It will help cure that headache you got from last night's hangover.
There is something important I need to talk to you about privately. We'll meet at your office after work's done.
Captain Hitsugaya
"I drank too much after all." Placing it on her lap, she looked up at the sun rays of the open window, wondering to herself. "What important thing he wanted to talk to me about?"
"So how did dinner went last night?" Matsumoto asked as she watched her captain working on, once again, his paperwork.
He then stopped writing with the ink brush for a brief moment to gave her a glare. "We're not here to leisurely talk about stuff like that right now. We need to concentrate on finishing all this paperwork. Soitaicho wants them all to be done and sent to his office by tonight."
"But right now's ten o'clock in the morning! There's plenty of time for that to be done. Besides, it only takes you a good two or three hours to finish them."
"The only reason it is that long is because you're never helping. If you did for once, all this would only take us an hour at most!"
"Someone must have woke up on the wrong side of the bed."
"Uruse..."
"Did you and Hinamori have a fight?"
"No, we didn't. Now shut up and get back to work!"
As the captain and lieutenant are bickering with one another, Haineko and Hyorinmaru have been listening to the conversation the whole time from the side of the room. "Heh, your master is one grumpy child," the feline zanpakuto spirit said. "You should know what happened to him."
"Even if I did know, I shall not disrespect my master's wishes," Hyorinmaru replied.
"You know, there's nothing wrong with disobeying him once in a while darling."
"That is only for you," Hyorinmaru added before noticing Hitsugaya storm out of the office, "and your master."
With that said, the teal-green haired tall man walked out of the room as well. "Hn, darling's worried," Haineko said. "I wonder what is in that kid's mind."
"If it's enough to keep him away from paperwork, then it must be a serious issue," Matsumoto added as she walked up to her zanpakuto with her arms folded over her chest. "If only taicho can learn to speak his problems to others..."
For the next few hours, Hitsugaya just sat on the rooftop of his division headquarters, thinking to thought about it over and over in his mind, contemplating whether he should say it or not. However, he knew better. He had to break the news to her. "This is for the best..." he thought as he opened his emerald-teal eyes to look up into the partly cloudy sky, "...for the both of us."
This is his choice.
This is the path he chose.
Not now, not ever.
There is no turning back.
Sitting up, he got back on his feet. Estimating it is about time for Momo to finish her paperwork for the day, the white haired captain of the Gotei 13 quickly shunpo to the fifth division headquarters.
Hinamori sighed with defeat. For the whole day, all she thought about what her childhood friend wrote in the note. The events of yesterday was crystal clear until the point when her father started serving her drinks which eventually surpassed her limit. From there, everything became a blur. "I wish he could be here already," she muttered.
"I'm right here you know," said a voice.
Momo jumped out of her seat. Once again, because of Hitsugaya's status as a captain, he is able to sneak up on her unknowingly. "Toshiro, don't do that!"
"Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you."
She blinked. "Did Hitsugaya-kun just apologized?"
The raven haired girl noticed her childhood friend isn't really looking at her in the eye. It's more like he's troubled with something. "What's wrong? You wanted to tell me something important."
He thought it all out, but when it came to the real thing, Hitsugaya found himself tongue tied. He couldn't get the words to come out. Momo gave him a questioning look. "Toshiro?"
Toshiro took a short breath and looked at her in the eye. It took a few seconds before he finally admitted, "Momo listen...I-I don't want to act as your husband anymore."
"Eh, why? We are so close to the end," Hinamori suddenly asked.
"I-I'm sorry, but I'm at the end of my line."
"Toshiro, I don't get it. At the beginning, you said that you will help me, but why did you turn back on your word when we're so close?"
He adverted his eyes away and quietly whispered, "It is best for you to go back to your family."
Hinamori suddenly felt her heart sink. She began having these questions in her mind; Why did he decide to back out? Is it something she did? Were they caught faking the act? "Sh-Shiro-chan...you don't mean that."
"It is where you belong. You never was supposed to live here in the first place if it weren't for those invaders, right?"
She felt her eyes becoming teary, but quickly realized knew she couldn't force him to. Besides, she dragged him in her situation in the first place. "Y-You're right. I should go back to live with them. Toshi--Hitsugaya-kun, thanks for helping me out until now. You're the bestest friend anyone could ask for."
"Y-Yeah," he replied.
"I can deal with it. Don't worry. I can handle it myself," she said, giving him a small smile.
He knew she is somewhat upset, but what can he do? He loves her a lot, but he couldn't be there for her especially not after what he did to her last night; not that she knows about it or anything. "I guess...you can go back to your home."
She slowly nodded with agreement. "Yeah..." Momo then placed her fingertips and takes off her ring and held it out in front of him. "Can you return this to Rangiku-san?"
Holding out the palm of his hand, she placed the ring on it. Hitsugaya closed his hand and replied, "I will..."
She gave a nod of thanks. "I'll see you some other time Hitsugaya-kun."
"Ja ne Hinamori," he quietly said before leaving her office.
Once the room is filled with silence, it is not long after Momo left as well.
Miyako hummed a tune as she placed a bouquet of flowers into the vase. Her husband, Tatsuya, is lying down on his side, watching the beautiful scenery outside. "It's a beautiful night," he said.
"I do agree Tatsuya-kun," she replied, returning to his side. "I bet Toshiro-kun and Momo-chan are both enjoying this as well."
A smile formed on his face. "I believe so too."
"I'm happy to see you and Toshiro-kun are getting along just great lately."
"Yeah, but I still hate that boy for stealing my little peach without me knowing," he retorted, "especially for someone his age."
"I just hope those two stay together. They're quite meant for one another."
"Hn, I don't know about that..."
Suddenly, there is a knock on the door. The parents looked at one another for a moment before Miyako went to get the door. "Momo-chan, what brings you here in this late hour?" Miyako asked.
"Huh, she's here?" Tatsuya asked as he left his seat to see his beloved daughter at the door. "What's wrong little peach?"
Momo doesn't know where to start. There is too much to say. Either way, she is going to clear the whole misunderstand from bottom's up. Looking up at her parents, she said, "There is something I need to talk to you about..."

Author's Note: A different form of rejection. How sad...You all are mostly mad at me right now for breaking them apart. It's understandable. (Note to self: get ready to run from the angry HitsuHina mob. Dx) Now the big question remains: will they come back together? Well, you just have to find out in next week's update. Please review! Thanks.
