Love

"Sirius wake up!" said a tiny voice.

"Mm…"

"Wake up!" said the voice a little more forcefully.

"No…"

"WAKE UP!" the voice finally bellowed.

Sirius toppled out of his bed and landed on the hard, cold floor. Mumbling and swearing Sirius hoisted himself and scowled at a grinning James. James' hair was sticking up everywhere and his eyes had a manic glint, he looked quite mad. Sirius playfully shoved James and crawled back into bed.

"Sirius!" James whined. "Please get up!"

"Prongs, whatever you have to say, say it tomorrow!" muttered Sirius trying to doze off again.

"I don't necessarily have something to say," said James mischievously, "more like somewhere to take you."

"Take me tomorrow then!"

"Sorry Pads it hasto be right now."

"It's not the full moon is it?" demanded Sirius shooting up out of bed. He wouldn't have been surprised if it was, with everything going on he was a little more than lost most days.

"No." said James. "But Moony, Wormy and Lily are tagging along."

"If this is karaoke-…"

"No! It's not karaoke Pads." Said James impatiently. "Just come along now, trust me."

"I can't even count how many times you've said that and something bad has happened." Said Sirius moodily getting out of bed.

"Yet you trust me anyway!" said James gleefully. "Come on then!"

And so against Sirius' better judgment he donned the Invisibility Cloak with James and headed out the Common Room to the mysterious destination.

"Hey!" Sirius hissed as they walked through a corridor. "I thought James, Wormy and Evans were coming with us!"

"They're already there Pads. Don't you worry." James said in what was supposed to be a reassuring tone but only ended up making Sirius more nervous than he already was. They navigated through countless hallways and passages finally reaching a small door.

Giving Sirius a smile he pushed open the door, granting passage to a large, cozy looking room furnished with sofas and coffee tables. There sat Lily, Peter and Remus gathered around a small table littered with butterbeer and firewhisky bottles and plates of rolls and a boxful of chocolate frogs.

"Whoa." Said Sirius. "Are we having an eating competition?"

Remus laughed. "More like a party Padfoot."

"Remus and Lily Evans?" gasped Sirius pretending to be aghast. "Remus, the legendary prefect, all around goody two shoes and Lily, the perfect Head Girl attending a secret party?"

Remus punched Sirius lightly on the shoulder but grinned nonetheless. "Just shut up and sit down already."

Sirius sat down and uncorked a bottle of butterbeer. He looked up to find all of them staring at him. "What?"

"Nothing." Said Peter looking down quickly.

Sirius shrugged and downed the butterbeer, only to once again find them looking at him. He let out an exasperated sigh. "Is someone going to tell me what this is about or what?"

"What do you mean?" asked Lily hastily. "It's just a party."

"Yeah," Sirius snorted, "a midnight party with Lily Evans and Remus Lupin in an abandoned room, is it just me or is there something fishy going on?"

They exchanged nervous glances once more and Sirius was about to remark scathingly when James sighed wearily. "Fine," he said opening a bottle of firewhisky, "we just figured, we're not going to get you to talk about it, and we certainly won't be able to get you to attend more sessions with Professor McGonagall so we decided to throw a little party. You know, let go, unwind, and relax for a while. Merlin knows we need a break."

"Prongs, Evans, Moony, Wormy," said Sirius solemnly, "this is by far the nicest thing you have ever done for me."

All five of them cracked grins and proceeded to drink a few bottles of butterbeer.

For the moment, life was good.

2 hours, twenty bottles of butterbeer and 10 bottles of firewhisky later (most of them drunk by James and Sirius) they sat slumped across the couches lazily enjoying the fire.

Sirius and James conveniently drunk.

"Lilyflower," slurred James trying to crawl to her, giggling as she helped him onto the couch, "I love you."

Lily smiled softly and laid his head in her lap, stroking his hair gently. "I love you too James."

James giggled violently once again and hiccupped, he tried to sit up and face Sirius. "You know," he said pointing at Sirius groggily, "I never thought, there would be a day, when Lily Evans, would say, she loved me too."

Lily rolled her eyes but grinned nonetheless. Sirius stumbled over to them and sat down clumsily. "Oh man, why are you ruining this with all this… lovey, dovey stuff?"

"Because!" shouted James. "Love, is everything! I don't know what I would do without Lilyflower!"

Sirius scoffed and rubbed his eyes. "How did you even get together with Evans? I can't seem to remember?"

"Because you're drunk." Said Remus highly amused. He had refused to drink anything, kill joy.

"Tell the story!" squealed Peter.

"I shall Wormy!" declared James. He struggled to stand on the couch and cleared his throat importantly. "Once upon a time, there was Lily Evans and James Potter…"

"Lilyflower!" James hissed. "Lilyflower!"

"James," said Sirius in a carefully controlled voice, "she can't hear you, don't forget, you're hissing at a closed door!"

James and Sirius had been standing outside the door of the girl's dormitories for the past half an hour, James periodically whispering Lily's name and hoping that she would come out and grace him with her presence.

So far there had been no such luck.

"Then what should I do?"

"I don't know… maybe you can slip a howler under the door…"

"I thought we were supposed to wake Lilyflower, not the whole Gryffindor girls dormitory!"

"Everyone's a critic."

The door burst open and James and Sirius were about to make a run for it, until they realized who that fiery red hair belonged to.

"Ah, Lilyflower." Said James suavely. "I see you heard me, no doubt you were dreaming about me too."

Lily scowled at James. "I wasn't dreaming about you, I could hear you arguing outside the door! What do you want?" she hissed.

"To be with you Lilyflower, I want to be with you… forever." Replied James earnestly.

They heard a yawn from behind the door and Grace was suddenly standing beside Lily, rubbing her eyes.

It had been a few weeks since she'd transferred and she'd adjusted nicely. She still missed Beauxbatons and Sirius bet that Beauxbatons was missing her too. It still shocked him a little when she sat with them and whenever he tried to act cool he ended up looking stupid. She unnerved him.

Sirius' heat started beating noticeably faster and he made desperate attempts to calm himself down, it was just Grace… it was just Grace.

Holy shit, it was Grace.

She was lovely.

Truly spectacular, beautiful in all honesty.

This was a normal thing for Sirius, he'd start to freak out when she was around, then he'd try to deny he had feelings for her and then he would finally accept the fact that he was completely smitten, eventually feeling a whole lot more relaxed, but never relaxed enough to try out his charm on her.

But he was fairly certain she'd ignore that charm.

"What's going on?" she asked groggily.

"Potter here, is wasting my time." Growled Lily.

"Come on Lily, he's in love with you, the last thing he'd do purposefully is waste your time." Said Grace cheekily.

It was dark but Sirius could see that Evans was blushing.

"Thank you Grace!" exclaimed James exuberantly. "Maybe you can help Lilyflower understand how much I love her."

"James," she began slowly, "possibly the best way you can show her how much you love her is by…" she stopped for dramatic effect and James leaned in eagerly, "letting her sleep." She finished with a smirk.

Realization and comprehension dawned on James' face. "You're right." He said awestruck. "That's a brilliant idea!"

"You're giving him tips?" exclaimed an outraged Lily.

"Not tips." Said Grace matter-of-factly. "I'm just opening him up to the world of common sense."

Lily giggled and Sirius sensed that Grace was good with handling people and calming them down. He looked over to James, who was deep in thought, never a good thing.

"Well then," said Lily irritated, "we're leaving." And without a backwards glance she pulled Grace along with her, who gave them a sad smile and an apologetic wave.

James had still not spoken by the time they had reached the boys dormitories and Sirius was beginning to feel a little worried. He only ever got like this when he was thinking about a full-scale prank or of some devious new way to get Evans to like him; occasionally it was both!

"Sirius." Said James abruptly.

"James."

"Why don't we… why don't we get Grace to help us get Lily to go out with me?"

"Help "us"?"

"Me." He amended hastily.

"I guess that's a decent idea, definitely one of the brightest you've had in a while."

He grinned satisfied and laid down on his bed, staring at the ceiling. "Love." He said dramatically.

Sirius lay down slowly, and when he was certain that everyone was asleep he opened his eyes and allowed himself the huge smile he'd been holding back since seeing Grace a few minutes ago.

"Love…" He whispered.

The next day James decided to put his plan in action. He and Sirius had to get up earlier than usual to keep up with Grace's tight schedule, which was to James' delight, was exactly the same as Lily's.

They had quickly scarfed down their breakfast and with Remus and Peter in tow, tried to catch up with the girls who were hurrying off to Potions.

"Grace!" yelled James. "Vandor! Over here!"

Grace turned around and gave James a quizzical look before Lily, who shot them both a glare, dragged her off to the dungeons.

James and Sirius managed to enter at the same time as Lily and Grace. Looking around they noticed that there were 3 tables left that could seat 2 each. Remus sat down next to his friend in Ravenclaw and Peter just stood there looking dumb. (Doesn't he always? )

What happened next can only be described as a moment of quick thinking on Sirius' part.

Grabbing Grace's arms and ignoring her protests he steered her to an empty table and sat down on the chair next to her. She was about to get up and leave when he pulled her down.

"Don't." he whispered in her ear. Their close proximity was making him feel a little lightheaded. "Let them sit together. Pretend to argue about getting up until the teacher gets here, then they'll have to sit together."

She nodded and started to whisper gibberish furiously and Sirius played along. It was quite funny to see James and Lily just staring at each other, Lily refusing to sit down on the table and James begging her to.

Finally Professor Slughorn entered and upon seeing Lily and James still standing said a hasty, "sit down, sit down."

And so grudgingly Lily took a seat next to James who looked like he'd burst with happiness.

The lesson started and strangely throughout it all Lily didn't say a single harsh thing to James. But that could have also been because for once James decided to take his work seriously and had managed to create a good potion, which however reluctantly she would admit it, Lily found impressive.

Grace and Sirius stole glances at them every now and then and grinned at each other, silently congratulations themselves on a job well done.

"You know," said Sirius as they walked out of the classroom, "I thought that you might not have wanted to help us."

Grace glanced behind them and grinned at the sight of Lily and James talking animatedly about something, oblivious to the stares they were earning. "Being Lily's friend in all I suppose…"

He nodded and Grace almost started skipping.

"That's exactly why I'm doing it!" she exclaimed happily.

"I don't get it." Said Sirius confused.

"Believe it or not, Lily actually really does like James. I can tell, when he does some things that used to annoy her she has to try hard not to smile. She gets angry when someone starts to gush over him; she's quite protective of him in her own wacky way. That and she despises every girl he's ever dated."

"Then why hasn't she said yes yet?" he demanded.

"Because of her ego! She can't admit that she was wrong about him!" she cried exasperatedly. And then as an afterthought added, "Plus I doubt she knows that she likes him, she's gotten so used to hating him that she can't imagine a future liking him."

"Then we need to change that." Said Sirius determinedly. "Will you help?"

"Of course I will! But just make sure Lily doesn't catch on, she'd skin me alive."

They burst out laughing and entered the Great Hall.
