CHAPTER 6
"Honestly agents I have no idea how I could possibly help you. I haven't been to the family fault in years. The last time I was there, was when I moved here after we had renovations done." Said Rick Alexander as he guided Myka and H.G towards the living area.
The Agents had gone to check out the possible lead as soon as they woke up. The two hadn't really spoken with each other besides the usual 'good morning'. The air was still tense and Myka knew they had to talk sometime soon, but she wasn't ready yet. At least that's what she told herself.
Myka was shaken from her thoughts when she entered the beautiful living area. She had known from the outside that the inside of the house must be pretty impressive, but she hadn't expected this.
The room was in a complete classical style, one that you would expect in an old Victorian Manor. There was a fireplace with a rug in front of it and dark brown leather couches stood in front of it. But that wasn't the best thing. The best thing was the bookcases from the floor to the ceiling, absolutely filled to the brim with books. Yeah, Myka thought, I could totally live here.
"See something you like darling?" H.G asked her and Myka was once again stirred from her mental image of herself sitting in front off that fireplace with a good book on her lap while Helena... WAIT WHAT?! Get it together Bering!
"Get what together Agent Bering?" Alexander asked as he walked towards another sitting area Myka hadn't noticed before.
"Nothing, never mind. You were going to tell us about your great grandfather." Myka looked towards H.G who had a playful smirk on her face and raised her eyebrows at her, as a silent 'what'. But H.G shook her head a sign of 'nothing'.
"Yes, please sit down. I will get Rosita to fix us something to drink."
"That won't be necessary Mr. Alexander, just answer our questions please." Myka said as she sat down, She noticed that H.G. didn't sit next to her but instead opted to stand behind her, which made her a bit nervous.
"Of course, what do you want to know?"
"We were wondering if you know anything about a crystal ball of some sort? " Myka asked the man.
"Do I know about it? Of course I do. Who in this family doesn't? But what would the secret service want with such a fairytale?"
"That's part of an ongoing investigation, I'm afraid I can't tell you anything more about it. Can you elaborate more about the object? Myka continued.
"Not really, I know that it is in our vault. If you want, I could show it to you. Ooh there has to be a picture of it here somewhere."
Alexander stood up and began to search the room for said photograph.
"Ah here it is!"
He went to return to his seat but his feet hit the table leg and he dropped the picture trying to retain his balance.
H.G. bent to pick it up, but instead of coming back up she stayed bent over.
"H.G. you okay over there?" Myka asked the writer while she stood up and walked over. Alexander had regained his balance and had picked up the photo instead of H.G.
"Of course darling, just need a moment. My body isn't quite as young as it appears to be. And it appears my back is giving me a little trouble."
"Oh let me help you with that, as luck may have it I am a physical therapist. So no need for panic, I'll help the damsel in distress"
"Really there's no need for that, I'm sure I'll be just fine in a few moments." H.G. sensing trouble tried to get up herself but stopped trying as a sharp pain shot through her lower back.
Myka didn't really like where this was going either and she eyed the man with suspicion.
"Nonsense! Let me help you, I promise I know what I'm doing."
Before H.G. had a chance to react the man had already pulled her in a standing position and she let out a small cry of protest as her back suddenly snapped back into place.
"Good god, you weren't joking when you said your back was giving you trouble. It feels like a mess. What did you do?" The man was now slowly rubbing up and down H.G.'s back trying to solve the problem and Myka was getting a little anxious. And the fact that H.G. just let out a small moan wasn't really helping either.
"Seriously how did you manage to mess up your back this much?" Alexander asked H.G. as he continued to work out the kinks in her back
"Oh it was nothing really I just slept on a crappy couch."
"What did you do to deserve that? Never mind I don't want to know."
"You know if you want I could just leave the two of you alone and come back when you've finished. " Myka interrupted finally having had enough.
"Right, it seems we're making your partner a little uncomfortable, or dare I say jealous." Alexander said as he stepped away from H.G.
"I'm not her partner!" Myka snapped and both H.G. and Alexander looked at her and she realised how that must have sounded. So she quickly cleared her throat.
"Just show us the vault please." Myka said as she stalked out of the room.
Leena woke up with a weird feeling in the pit of her stomach. She didn't know what it was but something didn't feel right.
She went downstairs to start preparing breakfast but a light in the dining room caught her attention. She grabbed the hidden tesla from behind the giant vase and walked towards the source of the light.
"No need to raise your tesla Leena it's just me." Mrs. Frederic said, startling the innkeeper.
"Mrs. Frederic, you scared me." Leena said as she quickly put the tesla away.
"Yes, I figured. Please sit down I made us some tea."
Leena took a seat at the dinner table and grabbed her cup of tea to put some sugar in it.
"I assume you're here for a reason."
"You're right, I am. I have a question for you, it concerns Emma."
"Alright, but I have to tell you, I don't know a lot. She's mostly been avoiding me. Making it pretty obvious that she knows about my abilities. She avoids Steve as well. So, she was either informed about us, or she actually knows us - in the future I mean.
"Not that we should discuss the future, because that would be really dangerous. It's just that I noticed some things."
"Yes I'm well aware of how tricky messing with time can be. I was just wondering how she's handling all of this. I have a weird feeling that something is going to happen. I'm just not sure if it's a good thing or a bad thing."
"I have the same feeling, but just like you I don't know what it means and to be honest it scares me."
"Me too Leena, me too."
"So let me get this straight, you put on a lab coat and you basically became magnetic and got stuck to the ceiling?" Emma asked Claudia with a slight frown on her face.
They were walking on the warehouse floor, and Claudia was filling her in with some weird stories. They both decided that they needed a break from all the artefact hunting and decided a walk would help clear their minds.
"Yeah, that's basically it. Nothing big, worse things have happened. Like that time when H.G. almost... You know I'm not sure I should tell you. Shouldn't you know about this stuff? You're from the future."
"Yeah but that doesn't mean that I know everything, my parents didn't exactly tell me a lot, especially my mom, she claimed it was way too dangerous and all that."
"Well it can be pretty dangerous, but as long as you don't mess with the artefacts you should be okay. Wait, your parents work for the warehouse?"
"Ooh crap, I did it again. What can I say... Spoilers?"
"Ooh no River Song, you're not getting away with it so easily. Come on spill!"
"Well Leena did say I should talk to someone about my family and all that. I suppose letting some of it out couldn't really hurt."
"Wait, let us find a comfortable place to sit first milady. If you're going to give me some juicy spoilers I need to be comfortable. I think the library would do just fine!"
"Righty ho, to the library we go then." Emma said as she followed Claudia towards the library.
"I should have known the artefact wouldn't be here. Why would it?! Rule number one, whenever it seems easy, don't fall for it, for it's probably a bad lead!" Myka said as she and H.G. stepped into the car.
"You know, you should look on the bright side darling. At least we got out of the warehouse for a little while. That place was starting to drive me bloody nuts."
"Well of course you enjoyed today, you got completely sexually harassed by mister physical therapist. And from the sounds of it you quite enjoyed it as well."
"A little jealous are we darling?" H.G. asked with a teasing smirk
"What of you? Why would I like that guy, he's slimy and way too cocky."
"I didn't say you were jealous of me darling..."
Myka felt her cheeks burn up and looked away.
"Myka I..." But H.G.'s sentence was interrupted by the blaring noise of the Farnsworth.
Myka quickly grabbed it and answered the call.
"Aah Myka! Please tell me you found the artefact?" Artie asked as soon as his face appeared on the small black and white screen.
"I'm sorry Artie but the artefact wasn't here. The relative who lived here claimed that it was supposed to be in the family vault. He took us there but the crystal ball wasn't there, only an empty pedestal. The owner immediately started accusing people of stealing the ball while the house was being renovated 2 years ago. He was kind enough to give us a list of the companies who were doing the renovation, but it seems to me we wasted our time. Or at least I did."
"And what's that suppose to mean." H.G. asked Myka with a hurt expression.
"Nothing just that you seemed to have been enjoying yourself while the guy was wasting our time."
"I wasn't enjoying myself he was simply helping me out, after my back betrayed me after sleeping on that terrible couch!" H.G. bit back.
"The couch you offered to take if I remember correctly!"
"Only because I didn't want you to have back problems the day after. And I didn't want to make you uncomfortable by forcing you to share a bed with me when it's clear you're angry with me for some reason."
"Ooh so now you're blaming this on me?!"
"That's not wait I said. I just..."
"LADIES! If you'd be so kind to redirect your attention to me please! You can continue bickering and ignoring the elephant in the room, well car, after I finish what I wanted to say.
When the two women stayed silent Artie continued
"Thank you. Now I want both of you to come back to the warehouse. Pete and Steve returned from their mission a few hours ago and I want Steve and H.G. to go check out the possible lead in Seattle. So get back here as soon as possible."
Before either woman could react he had already hung up.
H.G. started to say something but Myka cut her off.
"I don't want to do this right now, let's just get back to the warehouse."
"You do realize that I can't actually tell you anything about the future right?" Emma asked Claudia as they sat down on one of the couches in the library.
"I know I just want to know a bit more about you. You said that Leena said that you should talk about it. And Leena is mostly right so please, let me listen."
"Alright, well you know my name's Emma, I've got a little brother named Will. My parents..."
"They work for the warehouse right?!" Claudia interrupted the girl
"You want me to tell you or not?" Emma waited for a reply but instead she saw Claudia making the motion of zipping her lips, locking them and then continued to throw away the key.
"Right, so yeah my parents work for the warehouse. They're pretty amazing, they would continuously drive each other completely nuts and they'd bicker and fight but at the end of the day you could see that they were hopelessly in love with each other. That's the kind of thing I want when I get older.
"Anyway, so I have 2 uncles and 2 aunts, I don't really see one of them a lot, mostly because my grandpa from that side hasn't really excepted me and so he doesn't really approve that my aunt and grandmother have contact with me. Don't worry he's weird like that and my other grandfather totally makes up for it. So yeah my grandfather actually taught me how to play piano and my aunt taught me how to play guitar. While I mostly just goof around with my uncles. We're really close."
"Sounds like an amazing family." Claudia told Emma
"Yeah it is."
"You miss 'em?"
"Yeah I do. But I haven't really seen most of them in a long time. A lot of them died during the war and it has just been my mom and me for a while now. But being here makes it a lot better, you know. Seeing you working your butts off for me, it really means a lot."
"I'm glad we can help kiddo. Wait I'm calling you kiddo, but how old are you exactly?"
"Actually I'm 16 I'll be 17 next march."
"Ooh cool" Claudia said "So you're not really a kiddo anymore, is it alright if I call you kid then?"
"Wait March is like... No it can't be... You know what? I suddenly realised I forgot to do something. I'm gonna go to the B&B uhm... I'll see you later yeah? Okay bye!"
The only thing Claudia could do was watch as Emma bolted out of the room as if her ass was on fire.
So yeah I love Doctor Who, don't hate me :)
