7. Change
Come with me, stay the night
You say the words, but boy, it don't feel right
What do you expect me to say?
(You know it's just too little too late)
You take my hand and you say you've changed
But boy, you know your begging don't fool me
Because to you it's just a game
(You know it's just too little too late)
Haley shook her head and faced her book once again. She was struggling to finish an English paper, but it was being difficult. Her mind was obviously somewhere else, and she knew it... her schedule was really hectic by now, the exams were getting closer and then there was Nathan.
Things were starting to be awkward between the two of them for some time and she didn't really know why. Sometimes he was in a good mood: he would talk to her like they were close friends, he would walk with her, invite her to a pizza or something... even throw some nice comments. Some days Nathan really fooled her as a nice guy, a charming one. Other days, he would just build his walls up again and avoid her at all costs. Haley still couldn't get him at all, although she was making an effort.
On that week, in particular, Nathan was being a major ass to her. She was just tired of him being all hot and cold all the time, she just didn't know how to act around him anymore, and it was consuming her.
And now, she couldn't concentrate on her stupid English paper mostly because of him. Defeated, Haley closed her book and started packing her things to go. It was already late and the library would be closing soon, so it was better for her to go.
She was almost done when she heard footsteps coming closer, and she bet it was someone telling her it was time for her to leave. She zipped her backpack and got up from the chair, and then looked up to see him approach her slowly and carefully.
Haley sighed slightly at the sight of him. What did he want now?
"I thought I would find you here..."
She rolled her eyes at him and started walking towards the exit, ignoring his presence at all.
"So you're not talking to me now." He started saying while walking with her.
"What do you want, Nathan?"
He shrugged. He just didn't know why he went after her. He was at a party, where supposedly he should be having fun, when he simply decided to go look for Haley. He looked for her at her dorm, but she was not there. As he expected, she was studying in the library, on a Friday night. That was so Haley like to do something like that...
So let me on down
'Cause time has made me strong, I'm starting to move on
I'm gonna say this now
Your chance has come and gone and you know
It's just too little too late
A little too wrong and I can't wait
But you know all the right things to say
(You know it's just too little too late)
You say you dream of my face
But you don't like me, you just like the chase
To be real, it doesn't matter anyway
(You know it's just too little too late)
"You've been drinking..." She stated, without stop walking.
"Maybe a little." He tilted his head to the side and continued. "Wanna come back to the party with me?"
"No." She answered him shortly.
He frowned. She seemed to be really pissed off, and that kind of made him uncomfortable.
"Why not? It's Friday night, it's not like you have something really important to do tomorrow."
"I do have to work on my English paper."
"Whatever, Haley." He rolled his eyes. "C'mon, stop being so stubborn... let's have some fun. You and me."
Haley suddenly stopped walking and turned to him, fed up with his behavior.
"I'm just tired of you, you know?!"
"What did I do now?"
"Nathan, you're being an asshole to me the entire week and now you want to 'have fun with me' ... go to a party with you and everything? Are you crazy or something?"
He just frowned as she told him off. He was a little buzzed for the beers he had, and was really not in the mood to engage in an argument with her.
"I need to go." She simply told him after waiting for him to say something in return.
She turned again and started walking faster this time. Nathan took some time to snap out of it and go after her again, his long legs not having trouble to meet her fast steps. She sighed heavily when noticed he was again by her side, but she didn't say a thing this time.
They walked together in silence until they finally reached their building, and Haley acted as if she was alone there. She walked past him at the end of the stairs and focused on finding her keys, opening her door while he was still coming after her.
She was ready to close her door when he stopped it with his right foot. Haley looked at him angrily and Nathan smirked at her, obviously enjoying it. This just made her more and more mad at him.
"Nathan, get out of the way."
"Won't you ask me to come in?"
"I'm tired and not in the mood for your games, so please, let me close the door..."
"I will let you do it, as soon as you let me in."
"I'm not letting you in, Nathan." She challenged him, but he knew she was getting tired of that. He didn't move, and she let out a frustrated sigh while finally giving him space to enter her room.
Nathan smirked victoriously at her and she insisted on ignoring him, dropping her books on a chair and entering the bathroom after that.
"You have any beers?" He shouted at her, as she closed the bathroom door.
She never answered that, so he just decided to make himself comfortable and look for it himself. As soon as he was back to the middle of her bedroom, he started looking around, just analyzing the things. The way Haley arranged her belongings neatly, the color of her mattress, the posters hanging on the walls... at the beginning, Nathan was almost never inside her dorm. But in the past months, since Lucas was gone, it seemed like he was spending more and more of his time there. Sometimes he would skip hanging out with his friends to just be there with her, even though most of the time they just argued about anything. Of course he never told Haley how he dumped his friends more than once in order to spend time with her, but he had done it.
Slowly, Haley was starting to be more interesting than she ever was to him.
I was young and in love
I gave you everything, but it wasn't enough
And now you wanna communicate
(You know it's just too little too late)
Go find someone else
In letting you go, I'm loving myself
You got a problem
But don't come asking me for help, 'cause you know
"You're still here..."
He eyed her and took a swing of his beer. She was still drying her hair, but was fully clothed and smelling really nicely. Nathan just kept looking at her with nothing to say... actually he was really lacking words with her for the last few days and he didn't know exactly why.
She walked past him and turned the TV on, acting as if he wasn't there. Nathan kept quiet for some time until he decided to lay down on her bed. Haley let her towel on a chair near the bed and put her hands on her hips without getting what his problem was.
"Nathan, move it."
"What?" He looked at her quizzically while drinking his beer. His free arm was comfortably under his head and his long legs were crossed at the end of the bed, his Nike shoes still on his feet.
"Get out of my bed."
"There's plenty of room for you here." He turned his attention back to the TV.
"Look, I'm tired and I want to be alone. Go back to the stupid party you've came from and leave me, Nathan."
"I was going to do it... really. But now I'm too comfortable to move at all." He smirked at her.
Haley suddenly felt as her night was officially turning into a disaster. Nathan was obviously determined to make her feel bad, and she knew it was working. She just wanted to watch some TV and then go to sleep so she could wake up and finish her work. That was probably not going to happen any time soon.
Fed up, Haley just dropped herself on the other side of the bed and crossed her arms, making sure she was never touching him. Nathan eyed her quickly and held a smirk, thinking about how cute she was when she was mad. He focused on the TV again, while she just did the same.

I can love with all of my heart, baby
I know I have so much to give
With a player like you, I don't have a prayer
That's no way to live, no
"This was the funniest movie I've seen in ages." Nathan chuckled lightly while the credits rolled on the TV screen and Haley agreed with him.
"It was."
She turned to him and gave him a small smile. She found herself enjoying his company again and thought about the concert they went two months before. She enjoyed being with him so much on that trip... and now, although she would never admit to him, she was cool with him being there.
Nathan smiled back at her and then his eyes suddenly moved to her lips. The air changed quickly and he was now very aware of her. He was getting those feelings since the day they went to Charlotte, since he tried to kiss her there, and, crazy as it sounded, he was feeling the urge to do it now.
Haley licked her lips, probably getting the fact he was attentively watching them, and started feeling nervous. They were closer now, and she could smell his cologne without making an effort. Nathan was always smelling nice, she had to give him that.
"Can I ask you something?" He suddenly asked and Haley immediately nodded her head, expectantly.
"Sure."
"You still hate me, Hales?"
"Sometimes." She told him with a small smile.
"Huh... seems like I'm making some progress." He chuckled. "You know... that's good, Haley, 'cause I surely don't hate you."
"Yeah, sure." She rolled her eyes playfully.
Nathan touched her face slowly and Haley held her breath for some seconds, surprised. He suddenly got closer to her, his eyes meeting her quickly before asking her one last question:
"Can I kiss you?"
She only nodded, and that was all he needed to make a move and capture her lips, finally feeling what was like to be kissing her. And he had to acknowledge the fact that no other girl until that day, ever kissed him like that.

Nathan woke up quickly, and looked around the room. He was all alone in his apartment, sitting in his front of the TV, which was showing some commercial. He ran his hands through his face and sighed heavily, before trying to adjust his eyes and focus on the clock standing on the wall. Three AM. He was feeling a terrible headache, and it was being difficult to focus on anything.
He closed his eyes again and got up from his armchair, going to look through the window. Rain was falling outside and a cold air was blowing on his face. He sighed and touched the glass, trying to keep his mind off of those problems.
All he wanted to do was stop thinking about Haley all the time, but it was obviously a difficult quest.
