Chapter 7: Sing Us a Song

"How much further?" the large bandit grumbled as they made their way down the road, he and the others bound together at the wrists by Rapunzel's whip, forcing them to move together in a shuffling step.

"Not much further," Rapunzel replied, she, Quasi and Merida following behind the bound bandits, the redhead prodding them along with Baylen's sword while Quasi led their horses.

"Ye sure this is a good idea, Rapunzel?" Merida questioned as they began walking around a bend in the road.

"Trust me," Rapunzel replied, Pascal resting on her shoulder, "This is the best place to bring them short of walking them all the way to the Palace of Justice."

"We're here," Quasi announced with a smile as he pointed down the road. Looking in the direction Quasi indicated, Merida saw what looked like a small tavern with a red roof and brown siding. A sign depicting the outline of a duckling sat by the road, the name "The Snuggly Duckling" painted underneath in large letters.

"We're bringin' them tae a tavern?" Merida questioned, quirking an eyebrow at Rapunzel.

"Good," Baylen grumbled, "I could use a damn drink."

"Quiet," Rapunzel said as she kicked Baylen in the shin, causing the man to hiss as he hopped up and down on one leg while the princess turned her attention back towards Merida, Pascal making "I'm watching you" motions with his paws at the bandit, "This is the tavern that Esmeralda runs, remember?"

"Th' same Esmeralda 'at th' Captain o' th' Guard happens tae be courtin'?" Merida questioned with a knowing smile as Baylen and the other bandits grew nervous.

"The very same," Rapunzel agreed with a matching smile as Pascal chuckled.

"Come on, Baylen," Quasi said, tugging on the bandit as he led the men and the horses towards the Snuggly Duckling, "I'll buy the first round."

Walking up to the Snuggly Duckling, Quasi tied the horses to a hitching post while Rapunzel opened the door, allowing Merida to usher the bandits inside at the point of a sword. Entering the room behind the bandits, Merida took a quick look around at the tavern. The room they entered was a large one that took up most of the building. Most of the room was occupied by tables and chairs used by patrons of the tavern along with stools lined along the bar that took up the rest of the room, a set of stairs leading up to the second floor behind it.

The few men and women that were scattered around the tavern looked over at the trio as they entered as did Esmeralda from her position behind the bar. She now wore a white and purple dress with a long, flowing skirt and a bodice that left her shoulders bare, her raven hair tied back with a piece of purple cloth.

"Well, I have to say," Esmeralda said with wide, surprised eyes as she leaned against the bar and smirked, "I never expected to see something like this walk through my door."

"Hello, Esmeralda!" Rapunzel stated sunnily as she waved at her friend, Pascal smiling and waving as well.

"Hi, sweetie," Esmeralda chuckled, "Who are your friends?"

"This is Baylen," Merida explained, grabbing the man's head and turning it towards Esmeralda, "He used tae work fer Frollo. We met him an' his friends on th' way here an' figured we'd brin' them along."

"I'm sure Eugene would like to talk to all of them," Esmeralda commented as she turned toward her attention towards some of the other patrons, "What do you think, boys?"

As Esmeralda spoke, two thuggish looking men, each standing as tall as the large bandit, stood up from their table, one downing the rest of his drink before they began making their way over to the front door.

"Did these men hurt you, Princess?" one of the men grunted as he looked down at the bound men.

"Looks like they may have hurt them," the other man said as he lifted one of the bandit's head, examining the bruises on the other man's face.

"We thought we'd teach them a lesson aboot bein' polite," Merida replied as she rested the point of the sword against the ground.

"Maybe we should reinforce it?" one of the thugs questioned as he cracked his knuckles threateningly.

"No violence, boys," Esmeralda spoke up, "Bad for business."

"What should we do with them then?" the other thug questioned.

"Put them down in the basement with the kegs," Esmeralda replied as she nodded towards another set of stairs behind the bar that led downwards, "They can sit tight until Eugene and his boys come to collect them. I should have some rope down there that will keep them tied up better than that whip."

"Will do," one of the tugs replied with a nod as he and his compatriot began to lead Baylon and his men into the basement.

"So, really now," Esmeralda said as she turned her attention back to Rapunzel, Merida and Quasi as they approached the bar, "What's the story behind all this?"

"We were on our way here after visiting my old tower," Rapunzel explained as she sat on one of the stools, Quasi and Merida sitting to flank her, the redhead resting the sword against the bar, "We came across a tree in the road instead."

"The oldest bandit trick in the book," Esmeralda observed, "Did they get the jump on you?"

"Aye, an' Baylon proved very eager when he realized who Rapunzel an' Ah were," Merida replied.

"How did you get away?" Esmeralda asked.

"Rapunzel and Merida decided to have a race here," Quasi answered, "Phillippe could never keep up with horses like Maximus and Summer, so we fell behind. I was able to hear the struggle before they saw me so I got the drop on them and we managed to fight our way out."

"I'd hate to think what would have happened if they had caught you too," Esmeralda said to Quasi, a concerned look on her face.

"Well," Quasi replied with a sigh and a smile, "It's good thing they didn't."

"Aye," Merida agreed with a chuckle, "Ah cud drink tae 'at."

"You drink, Your Highness?" Esmeralda questioned with a quirked eyebrow.

"From time tae time," Merida answered with a shifty look in her eyes as she spoke, "As long as ma parents daenae see."

"Well, I haven't seen them come through the door yet," Esmeralda replied with a chuckle before turning her attention towards Rapunzel and Quasi, "What about you two? Care to try your first drink?"

Rapunzel and Quasi shared an unsure look.

"I don't know, Esmeralda…." Rapunzel began to say, a reluctant look on her face.

"Come on," Merida encouraged her, poking Rapunzel in the side with her elbow, "Live a little."

Rapunzel bit her lip nervously as she thought over her options. Glancing at her shoulder, she saw Pascal smiling at her and nodding at her encouragingly.

"Okay," Rapunzel said hesitantly, "Okay, sure, we'll try some."

"Yeah," Quasi agreed with a smile, "Give us your best."

"'At's th' spirit," Merida said encouragingly as she pat Rapunzel on the shoulder.

"Alright, three drinks coming up," Esmeralda said as she took three stine glasses and turned towards one of the kegs that sat behind her. Esmeralda quickly filled them with a frothy, amber-colored liquid before turning back to her friends and sliding the drinks across the bar to them. Merida and Quasi graciously took their drinks as Rapunzel hesitantly picked up hers, looking at the beverage with a dubious expression.

"Are ye gaein' tae drink it or are ye gaein' tae stare at it all day?" Merida questioned as she took a gulp of her drink, wiping her lips on the back of her hand as she set the stine down.

Glancing over at Quasi, Rapunzel watched as he took a sip from the drink before turning towards the princess and giving her a shrug.

Rapunzel turned her attention back towards the drink in her hands and gave it a sniff. Still uncertain, Rapunzel took a deep breath before bringing the drink up to her lips and took a swig. Rapunzel let out a gagged cough as the beverage ran down her throat, almost knocking Pascal off her shoulder as her tongue curled at the taste of the drink.

"Ugh," Rapunzel said as she placed the glass down on the bar and turned away, gagging into her hand, "How do people drink this?"

"It gets better as you go," Esmeralda explained, "Most people don't drink it for the taste anyway."

"What do they drink it for?" Rapunzel questioned with a dubious expression.

"Th' sensation," Merida replied as she took another gulp of her drink.

"What sensation is that?" Rapunzel asked with a snort, "Disgust?"

"There's anly ane way 'at ye're gaein' tae find oot," Merida explained as she eyed the drink.

Glancing over at Quasi, she saw to her surprise that he had already finished his drink, gulping down the last bit before setting the glass down and giving a small belch, causing him to cover his mouth in embarrassment.

"Excuse me," he said apologetically, as Merida looked at him in amusement and Rapunzel looked at him in shock while Pascal giggled.

Rapunzel turned her attention back to the amber liquid in the glass stine, watching it wearily for a moment. Sighing in defeat, Rapunzel reached out and picked up up the glass before taking another drink.

Later,

"Have I mentioned that I love you guys?" Rapunzel questioned with a small hiccup, her words slurring as she reached out and wrapped her arms around Merida and Quasi's shoulders, her body swaying so much that Pascal was having trouble keeping balanced on her shoulder.

"Several times in fact," Merida replied with a bemused smile, "Are ye feelin' it?"

"I guess I am," Rapunzel replied with a bubbly giggle, her cheeks glowing a rosy tint, as she turned to look at Esmeralda, "How many have I had?"

Esmeralda smirked at Rapunzel as she picked up the glass sitting in front of the princess and placed it behind the bar.

"You've had one, sweetie," Esmeralda answered as she began washing the glass out.

"One?" Rapunzel asked, squinting at Esmeralda as she leaned closer, a goofy grin on her face, "Reeeeally?"

"Yeah, really," Quasi said, a slightly worried look on his face, "I think that may have been one to many."

"Nonsense, I feel great!" Rapunzel giggled as she turned towards Quasi and placed her hands on his cheeks, squishing them together comically, "Have I mentioned how much I love playing with your face?"

"No, you never really do-" Quasi was about to say, but was cut off as Rapunzel leaned forward and captured his lips with her own. Quasi sat stock still as Rapunzel continued for a few long moments before she pulled away, grinning and giggling at him.

"I love you so much," Rapunzel said, running her finger along Quasi's chin, looking at him through half-lidded eyes.

"I love you too," Quasi replied genuinely, though he still glanced at Merida, looking for help.

"Hey, Rapunzel," Merida spoke up, causing the brunette spin on her stool to face her, the speed causing Pascal to wobble dizzily, "Dae ye still hae yer guitar with ye?"

"Yep!" Rapunzel replied happily before looking at Merida in confusion, "Why?"

"Well, th' anly thin' 'at makes a tavern like this better is a little music," Merida answered with a knowing smile.

"That's a great idea!" Rapunzel exclaimed as she jumped to her feet, sending Pascal flying off her shoulder and knocking her stool over as she did, "I'll be right back!"

With that, Rapunzel half ran, half stumbled out the door, her friends and a few of the other patrons of the bar watching as she went, Quasi quickly reaching out to catch Pascal as he fell.

"Where's she going?" Esmeralda questioned.

"Tae get her guitar," Merida explained as she righted the stool Rapunzel had knocked over.

"She has a guitar?" Esmeralda asked as she smiled.

"She does," Quasi confirmed as he set Pascal down on the bar, "She left it in the tower after she moved out. We found it today when we visited."

A second later, Rapunzel came stumbling back in, her guitar held in one hand.

"I found it!" Rapunzel declared loudly with a sing-song voice, walking over and sitting on her stool, settling the guitar on her lap, "What should I play?"

When her friends failed to provide an idea, Rapunzel spun to face Quasi, a thoughtful look on her face as she hiccuped softly.

"I know!" Rapunzel exclaimed, "We should do that little song we wrote!"

"Are you sure this is the right place for that?" Quasi questioned, looking around the tavern uncertainly.

"Come on, pleeeease," Rapunzel pleaded, sticking her lower lip out as she looked at Quasi with wide, teary eyes, "This is the day we met, after all."

"Okay," Quasi relented with a smile, bringing an ecstatic one to Rapunzel's face.

"Yay! Oh! Oh!" Rapunzel exclaimed as she turned towards Esmeralda, "Is it okay if we use the piano?"

"Of course, sweetie," Esmeralda answered with a chuckle, "I don't think Hook will mind too much."

"Come on!" Rapunzel said as she grabbed Merida's hand and pulled the Highlander across the tavern to where a piano sat on a raised stage, the redhead barely having enough time to grab her drink as she was pulled along.

"Ye play th' piano too?" Merida questioned.

"Oh no," Rapunzel answered with a shake of her head as she gestured for a nearby, empty table for Merida to sit at, "But Quasi can!"

"I wouldn't say that," Quasi argued as he walked over and sat on the stool in front of the piano, "Hook has been teaching me but I have a lot to learn."

"He's just being modest," Rapunzel stage whispered as she sat down next to Quasi.

"Sae whit's this song ye two are gaein' tae dae?" Merida questioned as she took her seat and took another sip of her drink, Pascal climbing onto the table next to her, looking irritated at having been left behind.

"Just something we wrote in our spare time," Quasi replied with a shrug as he tested a few of the piano keys.

"It's about our first meeting and and our adventures and everything that happened afterwards and stuff like that," Rapunzel explained dreamily before letting out a small hiccup as she strummed a few notes on her guitar.

As Merida chuckled at her friend, Quasi began playing a tune on the piano, catching the redhead's attention as Rapunzel began to play along.

"We were strangers, starting out on a journey," Rapunzel began to sing, the quality of her voice catching Merida by surprise, "Never dreaming what we'd have to go through."

"Now here we are," Rapunzel continued as she drew the attention of the other bar patrons, "And I'm suddenly standing at the beginning with you."

"No one told me, that I was going to find you," Quasi sang in reply, surprising Merida as well, "Unexpected, what you did to my heart."

"When I lost hope, were there to remind me," Quasi continued as the bar patrons began to gather around them, "This is the start!"

"And life is a road, I want to keep going, love is a river, I want to keep flowing," the two sang together, "Life is a road, now and forever, a wonderful journey."

"I'll be there when the world stops turning," Rapunzel sang as she leaned against Quasi.

"I'll be there when the storm is through," Quasi sang back as he smiled at Rapunzel.

"In the end I want to be standing at the beginning with you," the two sang together as they played a few more notes on their instruments.

"We were strangers, on a crazy adventure," Rapunzel sang as she stood up from her seat.

"Never dreaming, that our dreams would come true," Quasi continued.

"Now here we are, unafraid of the future, at the beginning with you," the two sang together, as Rapunzel beckoned Quasi to stand up with her.

"And life is a road, I want to keep going, love is a river, I want to keep flowing," the two sang as Quasi stood up and began dancing with Rapunzel as she continued to play her guitar, "Life is road, now and forever, a wonderful journey."

"I'll be there when the world stops turning," Rapunzel sang as she twirled around Quasi.

"I'll be there when the storm is through," Quasi continued as he reached out and scooped Rapunzel up off of her feet, causing her to squeal with delight.

"In the end I want to be standing at the beginning with you," they sang in unison as Quasi set Rapunzel on top of the piano before walking back to the keys.

"Knew there was somebody somewhere," they both sang, Rapunzel laying back on the piano, looking upside down at Quasi, her braid dangling just over the piano keys, "Like me, alone in the dark."

"Now that my dream will live on, I've been waiting so long!" they continued as Rapunzel tucked her knees up to her chest and began rolling backwards off of the piano, prompting Quasi to stand and catch her as she rolled off, "Nothing's going to tear us apart!"

"And life is a road, I want to keep going, love is a river, I want to keep flowing," the two sang as Quasi turned around and set Rapunzel down, the princess twirling as her feet touched the floor, "Life is a road, now and forever, a wonderful journey."

"I'll be there when the world stops turning," Rapunzel sang as she finished her twirl, setting her guitar down and beckoning Quasi to join her.

"I'll be there when the storm is through," Queasi sang back as he stood up from the piano and took Rapunzel's offered hand.

"In the end I want to be standing at the beginning with you," the two sang in unison as they pulled each other closer, facing each other with their hands clasped, Quasi's other hand on Rapunzel's waist while hers was on his shoulder.

"Life is a road and I want to keep going, love is a river, I want to keep going on!" the two began to dance, twirling around in a small circle together, "Starting out on a journey."

"Life is a road, I want to keep going, love is a river, I want to keep flowing," they continued as Rapunzel did a quick spin while lowering herself to her knees at the same time so that she was eye level with Quasi, "In the end, I want to be standing at the beginning….with you."

There was a quiet moment as Rapunzel and Quasi sat, looking into each other's eyes before the princess giggled and grabbed the sides of his head before she kissed the hunchback deeply. At that, the other patrons of the bar cheered, as did Merida and for a moment, the redhead swore she could see one of the burly men wipe a happy tear from his eye.

"Ye guys were amazin'!" Merida exclaimed happily as Rapunzel and Quasi rejoined her, grabbing a stool as she noticed the other princess was starting to wobble on her feet, "Ah didnae know ye both cud sing like 'at. Honestly, Rapunzel, is there anythin' ye cannae dae?"

"Um…." Rapunzel mumbled as she all but collapsed onto the stool, tapping her chin with her finger as Pascal climbed back up onto her shoulder, "I'm still not a good swimmer. I didn't get any practice in my tower. And you're way better at archery and fighting than me. Also I guess I'm not very good at….um….carrying my alcohol?"

"Holdin' yer liquor," Merida corrected.

"That's it!" Rapunzel declared, pointing a finger at Merida and only narrowly avoiding poking the redhead in the eye. Merida chuckled as she took Rapunzel's hand in hers and gently laid it on the other princess' lap.

"You should sing a song now, Merida!" Rapunzel declared, looking at the other girl with an excited expression.

"Whit?" Merida replied with surprise, "Nae, Ah-Ah cudnae possibly dae 'at."

"Come on, I want to hear you sing!" Rapunzel pleaded.

"Nae, ye daenae," Merida argued, a nervous blush coloring her pale features, "Ah'm a rubbish singer, naebody wants tae hear me sing."

"That's not true!" Rapunzel exclaimed louder than was necessary, "I bet you're a great singer! You have to let me hear you sing!"

"I'm not sure you should push this, Rapunzel," Quasi spoke up sympathetically, "I don't think Merida wants to sing."

"No, she's just being shy!" Rapunzel rebutted with another hiccup, "She's just nervous, like she was about dancing with Esmeralda and me yesterday!"

"Ah daenae-" Merida tried to say.

"Pleeeease," Rapunzel begged, looking at Merida with wide, watery eyes.

"Fine, fine," Merida groaned, "Anly if ye'll stop lookin' at me like 'at."

"Yay!" Rapunzel exclaimed, bouncing in her seat in excitement, almost knocking Pascal off again, "What are you going to sing!? Do you need music!?"

"Ah-Ah daenae know whit Ah'm gaein' tae sing," Merida sighed as she played with the glass in her hands, "Like Ah said, Ah daenae usually dae this."

"Well, I find it helps to sing from the heart," Rapunzel explained, touching her chest as she spoke, "Singing about how I'm feeling or what I'm thinking about at the moment or even where I am."

A thoughtful look passed over Merida's features as she looked down at the glass in her hands. Glancing around, she saw that the bar patrons had gone back to their drinks and food, though a few were paying attention to see what she would do. As she watched, one patron got up from a table he had been sharing with some other men and bid them goodbye as he headed for the door.

"Ah….Ah think Ah know ane song," Merida stated hesitantly.

"Alright, let's hear it!" Rapunzel replied excitedly

Nodding, Merida quickly downed the rest of her drink before setting it on the floor by her feet. Then, taking a deep breath, she steeled her resolve and started to sing.

"O' all th' money 'at e'er Ah had," Merida sang, her voice so soft that Rapunzel had to lean in to hear her, "Ah've spent it in good company."

"An' all th' harm, 'at e'er Ah've done," Merida continued, louder this time, catching the attentions of the other patrons, "Alas, it was tae none but me."

"An' all Ah've done, fer want o' wit," Merida sang as the patrons began to gather around her, and Rapunzel noticed some humming a happy melody that went along with the song, "Tae memory now Ah cannae recall."

"Sae fill tae me th' partin' glass," some of the patrons suddenly began singing, catching Merida off guard and causing her to pause, "Good night an' joy be with ye all."

Merida looked around, blinking in surprise at the dozen or so men that had surrounded them, smiling at her. Looking at Rapunzel, Merida saw the other girl urging her on with a smile. Suddenly feeling much of her anxiety leaving her, Merida took another breath before continuing.

"Sae fill tae me th' partin' glass, an' drink a health white'er befalls," she continued, some of the men singing along with her while others continued humming the happy melody, Rapunzel dancing slightly in her seat, "An' gently rise an' softly call, good night an' joy be tae ye all!"

"O' all th' comrades 'at e'er Ah had, they're sorry fer ma gaein' away," Merida sang as she stood up, twirling to face the men who were singing with her, as Pascal danced off of Rapunzel's shoulder and onto the table, causing the princess to giggle, "An' all th' sweethearts 'at e'er Ah had, they'd wish me ane more day tae stay."

"But since it falls unto ma lot, 'at Ah shud rise an' ye shud nae," Merida continued as she reached down and scoop Pascal up, "Ah'll gently rise an' softly call, good night an' joy be tae ye all."

"Fill tae me th' partin' glass an' drink a health white'er befalls," Merida sang, holding up her arm as Pascal crawled up it before he began twirling and dancing up it and across her to Rapunzel and Merida's amusement, "An' gently rise an' softly call, good night an' joy be tae ye all."

"Fill tae me th' partin' glass an' drink a health white'er befalls," Merida repeated as she rested her other hand on the table and allowed Pascal to dance back off, "An' gently rise an' softly call, good night an' joy be tae ye all."

"Good night an' joy be tae ye all," Merida finished, the other bar patrons echoing her as she reached down and stroked Pascal along the back, causing him to turn a happy shade of pink.

Rapunzel and Quasi began to clap as the song finished, prompting the other patrons to do the same. Merida flushed with embarrassment from the applause and took a quick bow, causing the other princess to laugh.

"That was great, Merida!" Rapunzel exclaimed excitedly as she reached down and scooped up Pascal, shooting the chameleon an accusatory glare, "How come you've never danced like that for me?"

Pascal merely shrugged in reply, earning a laugh from Merida.

"Ah guess ye jist hae tae know th' right song is all," Merida commented as she sat down next to Rapunzel again, "Saemetimes Ah sing tae ma horse back home. It tends tae calm him down if he gets agitated. Apparently, it works on more than horses."

"I'll keep that in mind," Rapunzel replied with a chuckle as she set Pascal back on her shoulder, "You're really good at singing, Merida."

"Ah'm alright, Ah guess," Merida replied with a smirk and a roll of her eyes.

"You're so full of it," Rapunzel argued with an exasperated sigh, "That's the same thing you said about your amazing archery skills, you know."

"Ah know," Merida said with an amused snort, "Ah'm nae th' anly ane full o' saemethin' either."

"Yeah," Rapunzel agreed, leaning back against the table, "I think it's starting to wear off though."

"That's good," Quasi commented with a chuckle.

"Esmeralda! Another drink!" Rapunzel shouted as she jumped to her feet and spun to face the bar, knocking her stool over and sending Pascal flying into the air again. Quasi sighed at the display while Merida laughed, reaching out and catching Pascal as he fell back towards the ground.

Later,

The sun had already set as the three finished making their way up the hill and back through the castle gates. Merida still rode on Maximus' back, but was also leading Summer by her reigns. Quasi and Rapunzel both sat on Philippe's back, the princess leaning against the hunchback, hiccuping and singing Merida's song softly to herself, though she only remembered half the words. Having become fed up with Rapunzel's current state, Pascal had found refuge in Merida's curls, his scales taking on the same fiery shade of red.

As the horses trotted up to the stables in the gloom, Merida spotted Phoebus sitting on a box, waiting.

"Good evenin', Minister!" Merida greeted with a grin.

"Good evening, Princess," Phoebus replied with a half tired, half annoyed tone, "I trust you know who that horse belongs to."

"Ah dae indeed," Merida replied with a chuckle as she slid off Maximus' back and handed Phoebus the reins, "We had a grand adventure taeday."

"I heard, capturing Frollo's headsman was no easy feat," Phoebus replied as he took the reins, "Which is why I decided I couldn't be too mad at you for stealing my horse."

"How noble o' ye," Merida replied with a wide grin before nodding towards Rapunzel and Quasi as grooms came out of the stables to take the other horses, "In ma defense, it was her idea."

"I'm sure it…." Phoebus trailed off as he watched Quasi have to physically pick Rapunzel up off of Phillippe's back and hold her bridal style, "Is Rapunzel….drunk?"

"A wee bit," Merida answered with a chuckle, holding her hand up with her thumb and index finger held close together.

"How many did she have?" Phoebus questioned.

"Two," Merida replied with a laugh, "Ye lot are gaein' tae hae tae work on her tolerance."

"Aparently," Phoebus agreed with a snort, "I just hope she isn't going to feel it in the morning."

"Why's 'at?" Merida questioned.

"Because tomorrow's her birthday," Phoebus explained, "There will be something of a celebration."

"Oh right!" Merida exclaimed, "Well, daenae ye worry, Minister, she'll be up an' aboot fer it, ane way or th' other."

With that, Merida turned away from Phoebus and walked over to Quasi and Rapunzel.

"Come on, Quasi, let's get her tae bed," Merida instructed as they began walking back towards the castle, "After all, it's her birthday tomorrow!"

Phoebus watched them go for a few moments, listening to Rapunzel drunkenly sing the birthday song to herself as Quasi carried her before rolling his eyes and shaking his head as he led Maximus back out the gate and towards home.
