Chap. 7
Ice Igniting Fire
Edward and I waited patiently for Billy to pull into the driveway. I was perched on the railing, swinging my legs back and forth. Edward was standing behind me, idly playing with my hair. I was nervous. Extremely nervous. "It'll be fine. You'll see." I nodded, and leaned back into his cold, hard chest. I sighed. Just then I heard a vehicle approaching. He straitened up. "Thats him." I hopped down to meet him. I wasn't going to hide, though the thought sounded wonderful. Edward stayed where he was, joined by Carlisle and Esme. When Billy pulled in, he was in a god awfully old Chevy Truck. Then I smiled thinking Edward was older than that truck. I heard him sigh. Ha ha. Billy got out and shut his door. I ran my hand through my hair once and smiled as friendly as possible.
Instead of him looking at me accusingly, he smiled wide and extended his wide arms. I immediately hurried into them and had to watch how much I squeezed him. "Oh, you are strong." I blushed, then he took my face in his hands and kissed each cheek. His voice was loving, "I was hoping this day would come." I looked at him and smiled. "Well, it would have been nice if I would have gotten a heads up!" He chuckled. "Billy!" Carlisle approached and shook his hand, smiling. Billy returned the gesture and rested a hand on Carlisle's shoulder. "So hows the family these days Carlisle? I heard you have two newer additions?" His tone was pleasant, but there was a sad note. Carlisle nodded and held his hand towards the house. "Why don't you come inside and you can meet Alice and Jasper. Esme is getting you something to drink."
Billy glanced towards the woods, then rubbed his face. "Sure, haven't seen your beautiful wife in...years!" Carlisle laughed and they walked in together. I heard something...or somethings in the woods. I glanced and thought I saw shadows darting. I caught the faint scent of...wolf? The hairs on my arms stood and I suddenly had the urge to walk out there. "Max..." Edward's voice brought me to my senses, and I quickly caught up with them. "Sorry, I thought I saw", he rolled his eyes. "You did." I looked at him and my eye brows raised. Can you read their minds too? He nodded. "Yes, they don't want to be here, they are angry that he came in. They hate us." I swallowed hard. He dropped it, so did I. Edward and I joined Billy on the couch and he smiled at me.
"I guess you want answers." I nodded. "That would be awesome." I laughed. He put his hands on his lap and was thinking. "Well, from the time your mother and father conceived you...your mother knew something was...different about you." I leaned back into the couch, trying to relax. "She had dreams of delivering a puppy, or you turning into a puppy after birth. Your father, mother and grandmother laughed it off. But your Papaw and I knew. Our people have legends. Yours and mine aren't so different." He opened his jacket and pulled a necklace out. It was gorgeous. Edward suddenly got tense. I didn't pay much attention to him though, I was enveloped in staring at the necklace.
It was something handmade. There were long thin wooden beads that had been burned on the ends to give them a dark brown tip. There was three rows connected of these. They all met together in the middle to a piece of round, polished green jade. It was set in silver, which had little silver feathers hanging from it. My breath escaped my lungs. Billy held it up and motioned towards my throat. "This was made for you by Jacob. He's quite excited." I smiled and pulled my hair up, so he could latch it around my throat. "Its beautiful." He nodded. "Carlisle called to tell me you needed to be guided. Well, I spoke to the pack and they are willing to do what they can."
All the tension in my stomach released and I sighed. "Oh thank god! I was so worried!" Edward huffed up. "He's not done Max." I shot him a confused look, then back to Billy. He looked at Edward and slightly paled. "Well, its only for training. Sam refuses to have you in the pack permanently. But he has agreed to let you run with them for a while so you can adjust." I shrugged, "Thats fine." I'm good where I'm at. I felt Edwards hand slowly rub my left one. Yeah, yeah. I smiled to myself. I'm sure Billy must be thinking I'm insane. "So, what do I tell Dad?" Billy shrugged. "Nothing. Your dad doesn't believe in all this. He thinks you have a horrible illness, but are just about recovered. You have talked to him haven't you?" I nodded. "Once or twice over the phone, why?" He sighed. "Oh nothing particular, he just really misses you."
"I miss him too." He smiled and then began conversing with Carlisle and Esme, eventually they got Alice and Jasper to come and meet him. "Okay, well if you can be at La Push tomorrow at noon, you can start." I nodded and hugged him. "Thanks Billy, oh, and what about Papaw?" He chuckled. "He's jealous." I smiled and he waved bye to everyone. "I'll see you soon Billy." Carlisle shook his hand and Esme kissed his cheek. "Bye pretty woman." He said to her and winked. "You dog." She playfully teased him and he lit up. "Hoooowel." He did his best impression on a howl and walked out the door. "That man hasn't changed one bit! Which I think is wonderful." She turned and kissed Carlisle quickly. "I'm going to go garden for a bit." I watched them all disperse and I was left alone with Edward. His dark umber eyes settled on my necklace. He brought his finger up and touched it. "It looks amazing on you." I blushed and looked up at him. You'd look amazing...my thoughts trailed off and he laughed. "Incorrigible!"
He whispered this so low, only I could have heard it. Slowly he leaned down and captured my mind, with his lips again. I got so caught up, I didn't notice the pairs of eyes on the stairs gawking at us. I held tightly onto him as if I'd collapse if I didn't. It was just a kiss on the lips, no open-mouth-goodness, but it still knocked me loose. When he pulled away he inhaled. "Your poison that I can't live without." I was about to respond until I heard sighs and an audible 'awww!'. I turned to my right, there stood Emmet, Alice and Jasper. They looked as if they'd seen Titanic. Alice had the biggest grin on her face. "You guys are too cute!" I stepped back from Edward, embarrassed. "Poor Maxi, she's embarrassed! You guys!" Emmet said sarcastically. "You know your just fetching blushing like that." He added and waggled his eyebrows. I went to argue but cold arms snaked around me. "Let it go." cold breath tickled my ear and I stuck out my tung at the spectators. "Your lucky."
All that afternoon, up till way late me and Edward laid around upstairs watching old movies and listening to his C.D. Collection. We were listening to a man named Amos Lee when the little thought I had been trying NOT to think of crossed my mind. I wonder what we are?He was across the room looking through his old records. He acted as if he hadn't heard my thought, I hoped not. I took a deep breath and waited...silence. Whew...So I took the opportunity and stretched out on his bed. I closed my eyes as the song changed.
'Go ahead baby, run away again. I'm getting tired of chasing you...'
I found myself easily sinking into this music, wasn't my usual...but then again what was these days? I snuggled in deeper into his fluffy decorative pillows, cast randomly on the king size bed. I didn't even feel the bed shift under his weight when I felt his breath in my ear. My eyes flew open. You scared me! He grinned, but got serious as he began stroking my hair. I'm glad he could hear my thoughts, cause I can't talk. His eyes were smoldering into me. My heart began to beat faster, my temperature went higher. I was locked onto him, my body reeling with his tiny chaste kisses. "Well, with that little change of direction earlier today, I'd say were dating." I wanted to pinch myself. I'm. Dating. The. Sexiest. Vampire. Ever. SQUEEEE! He laughed loudly and hugged me tightly to him. "You always make me smile you know that?" I nodded, "Someone has to, other wise you would brood all the time."
He rolled his eyes. "Yeah, whatever Lassie." I giggled. "Okay Lestat" He gave me a stern look. "Oh I am so much cooler than that fictional character." I rose my eyebrow. "Oh really? He happens to be one of my fictional crushes." He pursed his lips, eyes twinkling. He rolled me on top of him and held me close to him. "Well can he sparkle?" No. "Can he whisper in your ear?" Nope... "Can he give you shivers with one touch my beautiful Maxi?" Definitely not, but he doesn't drive a shiny Volvo! I chuckled as he began tickling me. "Whats wrong with my Volvo?" I snorted. "Paaa-leeze!" I exaggerated. "Oh, and speaking of cars, where is my car?" He rubbed his chin, pretending to think hard. "Oh, I think I parked it in the garage." I nodded. "Just wanted to know." I stretched and yawned.
"Go to bed, Maxi. You got a very eventful day coming up." I nodded and snuggled up to him, burying my head in his chest. He reached over and turned the lamp off. "Night Max." I smiled and kissed his cheek. "Night Edward." He returned the favor with a peck on my forehead. Shortly I was in lala land.
Next morning snuck up on me. One minuet I'm in a peaceful dream, next minuet obnoxious light floods my eyes. "Turn the sun off, five more minuets Edward!" I begged, until the scent caught my nose. I immediately went into defensive mode and my eyes shot open and I was crouching on the bed. "Easy killer, I mean man, I guess they weren't kidding when they say let sleeping dogs lay." The feminine voice went down silkily. Alice chirped, like a morning bird. I calmed down and sighed. "Sorry Alice. Automatic reaction, I'm used to Edward." She smiled and tossed a pair of jeans and a relatively cute light green hoody on the bed. "Speaking of my brother, he had to go hunting early, so he asked me to wake you." I nodded and stretched. "Alright."
She was giving me one of inquisitive looks. I stood and was still wearing what I wore yesterday. She looked me up and down. "You know, if you pajama's, you could have looked in this dresser. I took the liberty of stocking it for you." I sighed motioned to the clothes she laid out. "Yours?" She shook her head. "I love to shop." I giggled. "Well...thank you Alice." She beamed. "Your welcome." I motioned for her to follow me to the bathroom. She eagerly followed me, hot on my heels. "So, whats going on between you and Edward?" I motioned for her to wait as I used the bathroom. When I flushed I opened the door, letting her come in. "We're dating." She clapped her hands in joy. "Well good!" I motioned to the shower. "You mind if I shower?" She shook her head.
Alice was sitting on the other side of the long counter. I quickly stripped and slid into the hot water I had started. For some reason I was completely comfortable with her too. "You know Edward is very fond of you. He's actually smiling these days." I giggled and lathered up my hair. "Yeah, its nice to not see him brooding all the time." "Amen. Is it hard for you though?" I was rinsing my hair, I took a moment to answer her. "What do you mean?" I heard her pick up something, then place it back down. "You know, your a werewolf, he's a vampire. Your defining laws of nature. Normally the two species hate each other. Natural repelants and everything." I laughed. "Oh, well we used to think each other had a bad odor, but the more we are around each other, the more we don't notice. Actually, I think he smells kind of sweet and tangy."
"Well, I am ecstatic for you both. I think your a sweet girl. Your good for him, and he is for you." I rinsed off one last time and stepped out, reaching for the towel she held for me. Alice looked away long enough for me to cover up. "He'll be back any moment, hurry and get dressed." I nodded and she walked out. I brushed my teeth and hair, rushing. Matter of fact I was in such a fluster I didn't notice Edward's bedroom door was open. I just walked in and poof! There he was, buttoning up a fresh shirt. I froze and he looked at me, then he froze. Ice igniting Fire. We just stared at each other for a moment. I was turning red and he wasn't shy about openly looking me up and down. I looked at feet and then he snapped out of it. "I'm sorry Maxi, I'm done!" He looked apologetic but I smiled nervously at him and followed him to the door.
"Its okay, I didn't know you were home yet." He smiled and kissed the top of my wet hair. I missed you. "I missed you too." He answered, before he walked away. I shut the door and quickly slipped into the outfit Alice had chose. One last time the brush went through my hair and I met Edward downstairs. "Your ready?" I nodded, then checked to make sure my necklace was still one. "It's there, now c'mon." I followed him through an unfamiliar door into the garage. My breath hitched as I took in the sight of the impressive collection. I couldn't name the ten odd classic, highly expensive or street cars in there. Then there was one that was parked closer to the massive garage doors. It was covered. He tossed me my old car keys and nodded towards it. I thought nothing of it and jerked the cover away. My knees gave out.
There was my '73 Pontiac Trans Am, freshly painted and all shiny. I squilled and launched myself at him. "OH MY GOD!" I kept repeating before I help still long enough to look at my car again. It was a shiny deep gray color, with a picture of a wolf howling on the doors. The windows were darker too. It was so awesome. I couldn't get over this! Best surprise ever! He smiled, proudly. "I'm glad you enjoy it. It took me hours to finish it." I stopped drooling. "You did this, yourself?" He smiled. "Hey, I have a lot of free time when you go on your 12 hr naps. That flat ugly gray was killing me to look at." I leaned up and kissed him soundly on the lips. I didn't even bother to breath, I just stood there kissing him. Thank you, I mean it! It's perfect. He smiled into my lips and I finally took a breath. "Well, we better hurry up." I nodded. I ran my fingers on the diamond shine, shivering.
When I sat inside, I noticed the dash was the same, but polished and clean. The steering wheel had been replaced, with a gunmetal steel one. There was a matching gas, brake petal and clutch, the gear shift even matched! My stereo was the same, and my iPod sat, ready for use. I quickly turned it on and scrolled down to Get like Me. Edward joined me and closed the passenger side door. He looked over at me as one of the doors slid up and the sunlight beamed in. I smiled and started the car. "Oh this will be fun." I grabbed my sunglasses from around the rear view mirror. I loved this pair, then grabbed my fingerless gloves. For a moment, I thought of a name that hadn't crossed my mind in what seemed forever. Bo. I clenched my teeth. Edward looked over at me.
I ignored his eyes as I peeled out. I turned the music up louder. Cant think of him right now. I have Edward. All I need. I shifted into third by the time we were on the main road. My vision was so much better, I could easily go 100 mph without worrying about wrecking. Five minuets outside of La Push Edward touched my hand that had a death grip on the gearshift. "Stop here, please." I nodded and slowed to a stop. I pulled off the road and looked at him. His eyes were troubled. "Whats wrong Max?" I sighed and leaned back in my seat. "Later okay?" He nodded, then smiled. "We have to stop here cause this is the boundary. Your immune without invitation, I have to be invited. They are already waiting for you in the woods just right over there. Jacob's on his way with his Rabbit. I'll meet you back here around 8:00pm. Okay?" I nodded. I felt bad about ignoring him like that. "Don't, really." He said softly as he leaned over to me.
I met him half way for a kiss. My mood lifted suddenly and he smiled. "Knew it would work." I winked, "I bet you did." He kissed me again before I heard Jacob pull up. I got out and shut my door. I took a good look at Jacob's red Rabbit. He motioned for me to get in. I waved by at Edward, and got in. I looked over at Jacob who was grinning widely. I could smell the dog smell Edward told me about. Jacob smelled warm like Cinnamon and hot chocolate. Earth and pine. "Hey newbie, welcome to the club." I snorted. "Yeah, yeah." He laughed and we turned around, going to La Push. He turned his radio off and looked at me, then crinkled his nose. "What?" I asked innocently. He rubbed his nose. "You smell like bloodsucker." I giggled. "Yeah, I figured that. Well, you smell like forest, and something warm." He nodded. "Yeah, I had just got back from running before Dad had me meet you guys." I nodded.
He must have sensed my nervousness. "You nervous?" I laughed and watched as his house came into view, along with the group of friends, that didn't look too happy to have me. I swallowed hard. "Nah, never." He snickered and gently took my hand in his for a friendly gesture. "You'll do fine. They'll get used to you." I sighed and took a deep breath. "Lets hope so Jacob."
