Mariah knew from listening to all the conversations being held over the phone at the bullpen, and by sneaking around unknowingly, that the police had a lead. Sneaking through Jane's stuff one particularly late evening she had come across the folder regarding information on Alicia's kidnapping. They had a suspect out in the ghetto part of Boston whom they suspected. The had even held an interrogation and believed him to be guilty, they just needed a little more evidence. Mariah did not want to wait for that evidence, and writing the address down on a sticky note, she took off before the detectives made their way around the corner.
A couple days had passed since then, and it was now the day after she had watched the movie "Silence of the Lambs" with Maura. After finally being able to call her mom, she knew she was possibly throwing it all out the window by doing this. The next morning, she left early with a small backpack and the address to the Suspects house. William James Nelson, was the suspect, he was a six foot tall, dark haired, white male in his late 30s. He had a history of assault, and had spent time in jail off and on. He was also a known drug user, and had been caught with drugs, but was let go on a technicality. When she got to his house, she waited in the bushes, he was currently living at his mother's house and arguing could be heard from inside.
"I said I'll deal with it later Ma! I gotta go now!"
"What's so important that you can't spend time with your Ma, huh?"
"It's none of your damn business!"
With that, he walked out the door, right passed the bushes Mariah was hiding in. Her blonde hair carefully pulled back into a ponytail, and her clothes for playing ball were on instead of her nice clothes. she hoped the dark green of her t-shirt would keep her well hidden. When she realized he was walking somewhere, she waited until he was a good twenty yards ahead before she started to follow, as quietly as possible.
It was noon when they reached his destination, an old brick building that was being foreclosed on and was boarded up. He looked around once quickly, before pushing aside a piece of plywood to get in. Mariah, who had ducked behind a pillar quickly followed suit, not realizing that both of them were being followed by an unmarked cop car.
Jane's POV
"Jane, who's that following the guy." Korsak asked Jane.
"I dunno, stop the car for a minute. I'll have a look." She pulled out her binoculars she brought and looked.
"Shit!"
"What? Who is it?"
"It's Mariah! Maura's daughter! the Blake's adopted daughter. If she doesn't get out of there now, she's a dead girl, this whole thing is screwed, and Maura will have my Ass! Hell, I'LL have my ass!"
"Sonofabitch."
"I've gotta get her!"
"Go quick Janie."
"Call Maura, tell her not to worry, I got this."
"Just hurry! I'll deal with Maura!"
Jane got out of the car and tried getting to Mariah as fast as she could without being seen or heard, but it was to no use. Mariah had already made it into the building.
Mariah's POV
I followed the guy into the building, being careful to put the plywood in place carefully. As we walked further into the building, I made sure to keep my distance, but to watch where he was going carefully. I didn't want to accidentally lose my sister without even knowing it. After he was in one room for a good half an hour and left, I knew that was the room to go into, I wasn't prepared for what I found.
Alicia was there, her blonde hair matted and full of dried blood. She was covered in dirt, and her clothes were torn up. She was also handcuffed to the wall, by some makeshift hook. I approached her quietly as I didn't want that man to hear me.
"Alicia... Alicia..." I called. I called a little louder, hoping to get her attention.
"Alicia!" I waited for a response from her, and listened for anyone approaching. Hearing no one I got closer, lifting her head up, I realized that her throat was cut.
A gasp and then a sob escaped me before I could stop it, and then I heard him behind me...
"I see you found your baby sister" He said, before picking me up by my neck.
"I was really after you, especially after finding out who your mommy is. She can get me the real money that I need. Or does she even want you? After all, she did give you up."
"Shut up! Don't talk about my mom, you don't know anything!" I yelled.
"Don't I? Who couldn't know the mob bosses daughter? That long honey-blonde hair of hers has got to smell just amazing. I bet she's good at quite a bit of things other then her job."
"SHUT UP! I SAID SHUT UP! DON'T TALK ABOUT HER LIKE THAT! DO YOU HEAR ME YOU FREAK?! DON'T! OR I'LL-"
"OR YOU'LL WHAT? DIE LIKE YOUR SISTER?"
I bit him. I twisted in his hold and bit his hand. He didn't drop me. He tisked me instead.
"That's not going to stop me.. It was a very cute attempt though, I'm sure your mother will be happy to know that you tried.
"Drop her!"
He whipped around, keeping his hold on my throat and wrapping his other arm around me, holding me like a shield. He also got a good grip on my hair.
"What are you gonna do about it? Shoot me, and you'll shoot her too!"
Jane's POV
"Mariah, are you hurt?"
"He killed Alicia..."
"SHUT UP!" He said, yanking on her hair. I could see Mariah flinch, but try to hold it in.
"Just let her go, and we can all leave nicely."
"No!"
"Jane, shoot him! Shoot him!"
"I can't Mariah, I'll shoot you too!"
"I don't care! Shoot him!"
I had a flashback just then to what happened all those years ago in front of Boston Police Department. How I had been telling them to shoot and they wouldn't, being in their shoes now, I could see why the wouldn't. The flashback became even more real when he released his hold on Mariah's ribs to pull the gun out of his pocket. I still couldn't shoot, I would be killing her too. I saw the look in her eyes, and knew all hell was going to break loose. Maura was going to have my ass too.
"Shoot him Jane!"
"I can't Mariah!"
"SHUT UP!" He yelled, pointing the gun at Mariah.
"Tell mom I love her..."
I watched what happened next just like how it must have been for my colleagues all those years ago. She grabbed the gun and twisted it, shooting herself through the stomach, and killing him. Everything seemed to go in slow motion as she dropped to the ground. I wasn't even sure if she was alive, or him for that matter but I did something no cop should do in the given situation. I dropped my gun, and ran to them. Behind me, I heard Maura, who had apparently shown up just in time to see it all go down.
"MARIAH!" She screamed.
Mariah's POV
I did what Jane did all those years ago, just like I heard in the stories. It was stupid I know, but it was all that came to mind. Never again would the man make those comments about my mom, nor would he get the upper hand on her or anyone else. He wouldn't cause anymore deaths, and it was perfect payback for my sisters death. When I told Jane to tell my mom I loved her, I had seen her at the doorway. I wasn't sure if I had shot myself already and was imagining things, if it was a dream, or what. But I hoped she knew one way or another. I knew it wasn't a dream, when the last thing I heard was my mom screaming my name. Then everything went black...
