Chapter Seven: As Daylight Dies

"The true winners in a war are those that survives." - Hilda Evans

XXXXXX

Word got around extremely quickly.

Esme and Carlisle couldn't be any happier for Jasper, as he had been alone for a long time—longer than any of them, and the 'parents' of the Cullen coven could see just how sad and lonely that Jasper always looks whenever he saw the couples in the coven together. It doesn't matter to Esme and Carlisle that Hilda is a Nightshades' agent as long as she makes Jasper happy.

Rosalie had been very taken with Hilda right from the start, probably thinking of her as a younger sister of some sort. And it probably helps that Hilda is a lot like Rosalie—just as headstrong and stubborn, and she will stubbornly stick to her beliefs if she thinks that it's right. And amongst the entire coven, Rosalie had always been the closest to Jasper, and she had approved of Jasper and Hilda's new relationship status in a way that she had never approved of Edward and Bella's.

Emmett had always been rather supportive of his family's decisions, and usually follows whatever Rosalie do. He isn't as close to Hilda like Rosalie and Jasper, but he liked Hilda and her bluntness, finding it refreshing by having someone who isn't afraid to speak her mind around them.

While Alice isn't as close to Hilda like Rosalie, she is fully supportive of Jasper's decisions, happy for the blonde that he had found his mate at last. Now, if only she could meet hers…

…Unfortunately however, not all of the Cullen coven was happy with Jasper's new relationship with Hilda…

"I don't really see how it's any of your business, Edward." Rosalie said irritably. Alice had finally gotten a chance to inform Edward of Jasper and Hilda's new relationship status, and the copper haired vampire didn't exactly take it well. "Jasper and Hilda are adults, and they know what they're doing. We have no business interfering in their affairs, like how we keep out of yours."

Jasper was slightly surprised at Rosalie's defense of himself and Hilda, but he nodded to her in thanks.

"She threatened Bella!" Edward argued, as if that is reason enough.

Rosalie rolled her eyes in annoyance. "Well, so would I if I was in Hilda's shoes!" she snapped. "And let me put it this way, Edward. From what we've heard, Hilda has already been very lenient with us. Any Nightshades' agent—particularly someone from the STAR Division would have long 'dealt' with us just for letting a human in on our secret! We should be thankful that Hilda didn't do that!"

Edward shook his head stubbornly, refusing to listen to the truth of Rosalie's words. Hilda is right in a way when she said that he seems to have no brains in that head of his, with the way that he acted like an emotional kid most of the time.

"She's dangerous." Edward argued.

That is all that Jasper could take.

He had been listening to the argument between his siblings for the better part of an hour, with the rest of his family listening and watching on the sidelines, all the while wishing that he could be with Hilda, but knew that he can't, as it's sunny that day. And Jasper knew that Hilda would never willingly spend large amounts of time in the Cullen house, especially with Edward around. And honestly, with all the issue with Victoria and James, Jasper has to admire her self-control for not flying at Edward and tearing him to pieces.

"Well, I don't see how it's any of your business what I get up to with Hilda." Jasper said, eye twitching dangerously when he heard Emmett let out a loud guffaw behind him on the couch, and judging by the embarrassed and annoyed vibes coming off of Edward, Jasper could guess what Emmett is thinking. "I didn't interfere with your relationship with Bella when you insisted on pursuing her despite the fact that she's human, and thus, breaking several of our laws. So you have no right to interfere in my relationship with Hilda!"

Edward was pretty surprised and taken aback with Jasper's words. The blonde is quiet most of the time, with little to say unless another situation like the one with James nearly a year ago had taken place. He much preferred to bury himself in his books in his room.

"Look, that's not quite what I meant," said Edward tentatively. "It's just… She is a trained killer. You know that she's Nightshades, and you know how most of the Dark World sees us. Yet you're willing to undergo ridicule and all that just to be with her?"

"I don't see what that has got to do with anything." Rosalie said, disgusted. Even she could tell that that is just an excuse that Edward is using. He just doesn't like Hilda and Ethan, just because the two are doing their job. End of story. "Hilda and Ethan are fair and impartial. All of us knew that. If you had even bothered to try to get to know them, you would have realised that. And they're definitely easier to get along with and understand than some of the humans in town."

"I'm afraid that Rosalie's right, son. They're just doing their jobs." Carlisle said reluctantly. The father part of him wishes to side with Edward on this, as in a way, Hilda and Ethan are dangerous to Bella. But the impartial side of him knew that the two are just doing their job. "And if they say they won't hurt Bella now, they won't. Nightshades' agents are very proud people, and they are never one to lie. Besides, I've spent time with Nightshades before. They don't ridicule those that are different from them. That isn't their way. It is the whole reason why Sin City is even built after all. To have a safe haven for the ones of the Dark World."

"Besides, you have no right to talk about Hilda like that!" Jasper growled. "You don't even know what she's been through! And you talk about trouble. Yet you're the one giving us the most trouble here! When you went to the Volturi to try to kill yourself, do you know of the amount of trouble that you almost landed not just us, but all of the vampire community and even the Dark World in? If the Volturi and Nightshades hadn't acted fast, that would have given the magical communities the excuse that they needed to wage war against us!"

Edward looked rather guilty at that. Hilda and Ethan have said something along those lines before.

"I just don't like them." Edward muttered, sounding like a three-year-old who hadn't gotten his way.

Jasper glared. "Well, too bad for you. They're going to be around for a long time, so I suggest you get used to it," he said. "If not, I will move out if that's what it takes." Half the coven looked at Jasper in horror. "You have no control over my life, and can't dictate what I can and can't do. Because it. Is. My. Life."

Halfway across Forks, a rather similar conversation was taking place outside Forks High School as Hilda Evans and Ethan Nightray sat on the seats of their bikes, having a conversation amongst themselves even as they waited for a friend of theirs.

"I can just imagine the reactions of the others once you tell them." Ethan grinned at Hilda impishly. "Or rather, their reactions at the next reunion party. You've been alone for a long time. It's about time."

"Very funny." Hilda frowned. "And speaking of Jasper and me, what about Alice and you?"

"Alice?" Ethan was confused for a moment, quirking a brow before he recalled what Alice had done last night, and how it might have looked to Hilda. "Oh. That? There's really nothing between us." He told Hilda. "I know how it looks, but it's really nothing. We're just friends, that's all. Like how you're friends with Rosalie and Emmett."

"I see." Hilda sighed. "Not that I'm one to talk, but you should think about settling down soon enough. Getting married doesn't mean that you have to quit Nightshades. Lots of our friends and comrades are still agents despite having been married, and even having kids."

Ethan sighed, having heard the same thing from several of his friends and even his family over the years. At the very least, to Hilda's credit, she didn't try to offer to set him up on a date. "You speak like it's that easy. It's not like it's that easy to find."

Hilda rolled her eyes at Ethan. "Oh pul~lease! The girls that would kill to go out with you are enough to fill up all of Sin City! And remember our days in the Academy?" she pointed out. "If looks could kill, I'll be dead a hundred times over just by the death glares alone. You can't tell me that you can't find a girl who isn't even in the least bit interested in you."

Ethan winced at that. He had been two years Hilda's senior when they have started in the Academy, and hence, when Hilda had started her first year, he had been assigned as her mentor. Thanks to his noble status, there had been many girls who were interested in him, and hence, all his female acquaintances were the targets of jealous girls, particularly Hilda who had spent most of her time with him then.

"Like Hell I would even give a fangirl a minute of my time." Ethan scoffed. "Why do you think that my only female friends apart from you and Luna are some of the others serving in STAR Division and Intelligence? They at least had their heads on straight and got their priorities right. And why do you think that I always take you as my date whenever there are mandatory parties and dances for us to attend?"

Hilda blinked, and she groaned. "…So that explains why High Lord Elton seems to think that there is something between us." She pointed an accusatory finger at Ethan.

Honestly, if it hadn't been for Ethan's elder brother, Eric, High Lord Elton would have probably already long approached Hilda for a marriage proposal. In the noble vampire clans, it isn't always the eldest son who is the heir. The vampire clans picked their heirs and High Princes in terms of power and leadership abilities. It just so happens that Ethan is better at leading people, and he is much more powerful than his elder brother who much prefers taking a backseat and assist his brother and his clan from behind the scenes in politics.

"Sorry." Ethan apologised meekly. He then glanced at his watch and at the gates of the high school. "Seriously though, how much longer is she going to take?"

"Should be anytime soon," said Hilda uncaringly. "Xatis sent her here about four years ago undercover when we started receiving disturbing news. I got some of my information about the Seattle situation from her as well. And well…" She glanced at Ethan. "I do believe that this is going to be the first time that you're going to meet her.

"Her time of service in this town is going to be up soon, right?" Ethan asked, and Hilda nodded.

Most Nightshades agents who served in the Undercover Division have a time limit of five years when going undercover in a human town. Any longer than that, and the humans are going to wonder why they don't age.

"She's probably going to be reposted, or maybe getting a teaching post at the Academy. She's due for some teaching duties anyway." Hilda shrugged. She then brightened when she saw a lone figure making her way towards them. "She's here."

Angela Mortensen, also otherwise known as Angela Weber to the citizens of Forks made her way towards the two Nightshades' agents quickly. "I'll make this quick," said Angela quickly after a quick nod to the two Nightshades' agents. "There's been another disappearance in Seattle. A fifteen-year-old girl by the name of Bree Tanner. But from the looks of things, they have enough vampires in the army now."

"Damn." Hilda muttered to herself. "If they're going to make a move, it's soon." She then cleared her throat. "Anyway, I do believe that this is the first time that you've both met. Angela, meet Ethan Nightray. Ethan, this is Angela Mortensen, a member of the Mortensen vampire clan."

Ethan nodded to Angela. "Pleased to meet you—" His words were caught in his throat as he grasped Angela's hand in a quick handshake, and his eyes then widened a slight fraction. Across from him, the expression on Angela's face is an exact copy of his.

Beside Ethan, Hilda almost groaned to herself as she recognised the signs of a mate bond forming. Just what are the odds? And to think that they are just talking about Ethan's lack of a mate earlier too.

"Good grief." Hilda muttered to herself in disbelief.

XXXXXX

"So. You and Angela, huh?" Hilda looked at Ethan as the pair of them trekked up the pathway that led to the Cullen house. "If I'd known she was your mate, I would have introduced you both sooner."

Ethan grunted. "She's in your year, right?" he asked. "Back at the Academy."

"Yeah." Hilda nodded. "We aren't that close, as compared to my friendship with Luna, Selene and the others, but we are friends in a way. The Mortensen clan is a minor vampire clan that specialises in stealth and information gathering. Hence why Angela was recruited by the Undercover Division straight upon graduation. A little after the war ended, she became one of the undercover agents beneath me."

"All right. Back to business. The high school graduation is in a week." Ethan sighed, changing the subject expertly. "And honestly, if it is Victoria who is behind the Seattle situation, I have no idea what she's even thinking anymore."

"You and me both." Hilda sighed. "I really don't want to persecute her as a criminal. But we won't have much choice here. The Law is harsh, but it is the Law."

The door to the Cullen house opened just then, and Rosalie was standing at the entrance, greeting them both with a small smile. "Hi Hilda. Ethan. Welcome," she greeted. "Don't mind Edward. He's in another one of his moods." She rolled her eyes in annoyance as Hilda and Ethan entered. "He isn't exactly taking the news that Jasper and Hilda are mates well."

"Not like I particularly care what he thinks of me." Hilda scoffed, and Rosalie hid an amused smile behind her hand. It is why she likes Hilda so much, taking to her instantly in a way that she had never taken to Bella. Like Rosalie, Hilda had a no-nonsense attitude, and don't care what others think of her and what she does as long as she stuck to her beliefs.

"I take it that he didn't like it then." Ethan sighed. He had anticipated this happening, since Edward doesn't like Hilda and himself, and vice versa.

"Big understatement of the year." Jasper scoffed, appearing next to Hilda just then, and he smiled a crooked smile at Hilda who smiled back. "Hi babe." He wrapped his arms around the petite dhampir's waist, giving her a slight peck on the lips, and Rosalie and Ethan looked away politely.

"What's he said or done this time?" Hilda almost groaned the moment that the greetings are over, and she could hear Edward and Alice arguing—a big surprise, as the two usually got along well, and Alice tends to take Edward's side in arguments. Not this time, it seems.

"The usual." Rosalie gestured with a manicured hand. "He really deserves a smack." She muttered beneath her breath.

"Just what is your problem with Hilda and Ethan anyway?" Alice almost cried in frustration, throwing her arms up in the air even as Rosalie, Jasper, Hilda and Ethan entered the room where the Cullen coven are all gathered. As it is still school hours, Bella is at school. "None of us have any problems with them!"

"They themselves said that Victoria is one of them! How do we know that they won't try to help her?" Edward argued.

Hilda's eye twitched. Is he trying to say that they can't separate their personal and work lives?

"Unlike you, we can actually separate our work lives and personal lives." Ethan said coldly, suggesting that he isn't that pleased with what Edward is trying to say either. "We're professionals. And it is true that Victoria had been one of us, but she is an informant. She is a grown adult. If the Seattle situation is indeed her doing, we will persecute her as a criminal. She knows the Law. She should know what she's getting herself into."

Emmett gave Edward a look that said 'I told you so'.

"Besides, if it wasn't because of orders, and if I had it my way, I would have let Victoria take her revenge on you." Hilda's eyes are like daggers. "It's the only thing that she's got left." Seeing Edward look extremely angry, and about to open his mouth, Hilda cut him off. "Don't even try me. She's my friend, no matter what she's done. It would have been a far kinder fate to her if you had killed her when you killed James."

Sensing the tense atmosphere in the air, Alice stepped forward and took hold of Hilda's arm. "Stop with all that gloomy talk. I'm planning a party after the graduation ceremony next week, and both you and Ethan are invited too!" She ignored Edward's spluttering. "I want your opinion on what I should wear!"

"Why are you asking me? In case you hadn't noticed, I'm not much of a dress person!" Hilda complained as Alice dragged her out of the drawing room and up to her own room, with an amused Rosalie following behind.

"We'll pick something out for you too! You're not turning up at a party in what you usually wear!" Rosalie sounds rather determined to have her way, and Ethan grinned to himself.

He will love to see those two actually get Hilda to wear a dress. She hates playing dress up, and while she has worn dresses for the few mandatory parties and dances that they have to attend as high ranked Nightshades agents, there is no denying the fact that like majority of the STAR Division, Hilda loathes parties.

"And what is wrong with that?"

Their voices faded away as the three girls walked up the stairs to Alice's room, and Ethan sighed. "Honestly, I have no idea if you're truly that dense, or you're just plain suicidal." He told Edward harshly. "Both of us have told you more than one time that we have no plans to harm your girlfriend. Nightshades agents always keep our word. And I have no idea if you just have something against Hilda or something, but my advice here: don't piss her off more than you already have. You won't want to see her truly angry. Like most of our comrades, Hilda isn't one to follow orders just because it is. She only do what she thinks is right. That is why STAR Division looked at her and decided that they wanted her."

Carlisle nodded, recalling what Xatis had told him briefly in his letters. "Xatis said something like that too," he said. "It is a trait belonging to all agents of the STAR Division. They aren't ones to follow authority or orders just because it is. They only do what they believes is right. That's why they are so respected."

"If Bella doesn't have a problem with Hilda and Ethan, then I don't see why you have a problem with them." Jasper said tiredly. He had seen Bella's interactions with Hilda. While those are few, he could see that Bella is pretty neutral with Hilda—taking to her in a way that she does Rosalie.

"Besides, Bella is a grown woman—an adult in an adult relationship. It's not my place to say, but you should stop making all the decisions on your own." Ethan told Edward severely. "That isn't how a relationship works. If you continue this way, you'll only chase her away from you. Treat her with respect. Too much protection can be stifling at times. We know that better than anyone else."

Jasper's lips twitched. Ethan is probably the first one with enough guts to tell that to Edward's face. There are several times when many of them have wanted to tell Edward the same thing, particularly Alice, but they have opted to stay out of his love life.

Things are going to be interesting…

XXXXXX

It seems to Hilda like nearly the entire teen population of Forks High School had been invited to this 'graduation party' even as she leaned against the staircase of the Cullen mansion, watching as the humans mingle with each other or even swaying with the music.

Hilda had flat out refused to put on a dress despite Alice and Rosalie's protests, saying that she'll go to the party, but she refuse to play dress up.

In the end, she had turned up in a white dress shirt with a black hooded jacket worn over it, with black jeans and ankle high black boots, with her pale neck being adorned by the chain that she always wore, and which Jasper has never been seen without too.

Hilda screwed up her nose slightly as a strong waft of perfume reaches her nostrils even as she watch Bella greet two of her friends – some girl named Jessica and Angela who flashed her a secret smile before mingling about with the humans in her persona as Angela Weber.

"Here." Jasper greeted Hilda with a charming smile, holding out a glass half-filled of what must be liquor of some sort. The blonde looked very handsome in an outfit of a dark gray long-sleeved shirt worn over a white polo shirt with dark blue jeans. "You look like you needed it."

"Thanks." Hilda smiled as she took the glass from Jasper. "Wonder how the others are doing? It's been awhile since I've last seen them." She pondered.

"STAR agents?" Jasper enquired, and Hilda nodded.

"I'm not sure if Ethan had told you before, but all those that serves in STAR Division are all branded with a Rune the day that we are initiated." She moved down one of the silver bangles that adorned her left wrist, showing Jasper a curious black tattoo of some sort on the underside of her left arm, just below her wrist. "It allows the agents of STAR Division to know if any of us are in danger, or if they're alive or dead. STAR Division is one of the most dangerous divisions after all, with the kind of missions that we take, and with the high death toll that comes with it. Most just can't cope with the high psychological stress and the combat level required. Only the best of the best gets in."

"Yeah, Ethan said that." Jasper smiled. "He said something too that I'm curious about." Hilda raised an eyebrow. "What's this Coming-of-Age ceremony thing that he's talking about?"

Hilda almost choked on her drink. "He told you that?"

"Not in detail."

Hilda was silent for a long time, a faint flush appearing on her cheeks. She then groaned, pinching the bridge of her nose. "Okay, I'm going to make this as easy and as less embarrassing as possible," she groaned. "Jasper, a Coming-of-Age Ceremony is mandatory for all of us once we come of age. It is the time when we become an adult."

"So what do you usually do during those?" Jasper asked curiously. From what he heard from Ethan, it seems that those ceremonies generally involved a lot more than parties and such as is apparent during his time.

Hilda blushed. "Do I really have to spell it out for you?" she almost groaned, pinching the bridge of her nose to ease her headache. Halfway across the room, Ethan who was having a conversation with Angela snickered. Both of them could hear clearly what they are talking about despite the blaring music, and had a feeling that the upcoming conversation is going to be an embarrassing one. Hilda looked at a confused Jasper, and she sighed. "Come on, Jasper. Do the math. Coming-of-Age Ceremony. It means becoming an adult. Now what does becoming an adult usually means?"

Jasper connected the dots in his head almost instantly.

"Uh…" If vampires could blush, Jasper would be bright red. He had been a vampire far longer than any of his siblings, and he isn't exactly totally ignorant to the pleasures of the flesh.

"Now you get it?" Hilda sighed. "And come on, it's not like I think that you're a virgin either. I'll be surprised if you hadn't slept around, with just how long that you had been a vampire. I know the Volturi definitely does. Demetri and Felix seem to make it some kind of competition between themselves as to how many women they can bang in a month." She rolled her eyes in annoyance. "Several of my comrades at Nightshades does too—when you are an agent of Nightshades, you find that doing 'that' can relieve stress better than you think." She eyed Jasper who suddenly looked very jealous. "And before you think of something stupid, I don't sleep around." She reprimanded, and Jasper looked ashamed. "I only did it once. Just once, during my Coming-of-Age Ceremony as it's mandatory. It's tradition for us, when we pass the stages of a child and become a full fledged adult."

"So… Who did you sleep with?" Jasper coughed, Hilda's words making him feel better. "Ethan?"

Hilda looked almost ill. "No. Sleeping with him is almost like sleeping with my brother. Just ew," she said. "It's with one of my friends—a former classmate, a succubus. I only did it that one time. I don't make it a habit to sleep around. As a succubus, Aeon requires regular intercourse to sustain his life force. Of course, he's a professional, so he won't get too attached to me. Right from the start, I've made it quite clear to him that there won't be anything between us after that night. He knew that."

"I…see…" Jasper said, not really knowing what to say.

The sounds of footsteps coming down the staircase behind them stopped just then, and both turned around only to see Alice frozen on the staircase, her eyes glazed over. Jasper knew those signs—she's having a vision.

"Alice, what'd you see?" Jasper asked with concern, barely noticing the fact that Bella is approaching them with concern, having seen Alice space out in the middle of her conversation with Jacob and some of his friends.

"The decision's been made." Alice said slowly, her mind still reeling over what she had just seen.

"What's going on?" Jacob asked curiously, approaching them.

Hilda narrowed her eyes. "They're coming here?" she guessed, and Alice nodded. "Good grief." She groaned.

The Cullen coven, Bella, Ethan, Hilda and even the three wolves that have came to the party were quick to excuse themselves from the hustle and bustle of the party, and gathered on the Cullens' front porch – far away enough so that no one could overhear them.

"They'll be here in four days." Alice said nervously.

"This could turn into a bloodbath." Carlisle frowned with concern.

"Who's behind it?" Edward asked.

"I didn't see anyone I recognise. Maybe one." Alice bit on her lower lip.

"Is this the one you know?" Ethan interrupted, pulling out a photo of Riley Biers and showing it to Alice who nodded. He then exchanged looks with Hilda. "Looks like our hunch is right."

"This complicates matters." Hilda muttered, rubbing her temples. Jacob exchanged confused looks with Embry and Quil. "But he's not the one who started this. He might have been a native of Forks, but he doesn't have any known grudges against the Cullens or Bella. Besides, he was just turned six months ago. Whoever is behind this is staying out of the action."

There was silence for several moments.

"They must be playing with the blind spots in Alice's vision." Carlisle concluded. It isn't impossible to block Alice's gift. Ethan and Hilda are living proof of that.

"Either way, the army is coming, and there aren't enough of us to protect the town." Jasper said grimly from his place next to Hilda. "And even Nightshades agents aren't omnipotent, and they can't be in two places at once."

"Hold up." Jacob scowled, not feeling very happy that he is being left out of the loop. "What damn army?"

"Newborns." Hilda elaborated for Jacob when it seems that no one else would. "Blood Vampires."

"What are they after?" Embry asked with concern.

Alice was quiet for a moment before speaking up once more. "They were passing around a red blouse—one that Bella said was taken from her closet a few days ago when that nomad was in her room," she said. "They were passing around her scent."

"They're after Bella?" Jacob interrupted, eyes wide. "What does that mean?"

"It means an ugly fight. With lives lost." Carlisle said grimly.

Jacob glanced at Embry and Quil who both nodded back. Hilda doesn't need to read minds to know what they're thinking. "Are you sure about this?" Ethan asked the three shape shifters quietly from his place next to Hilda. "This isn't like any fight that you've been in. You'll be taking on a newborn army. Vampires."

"We're up for it." Jacob said with determination.

"That isn't all that I've seen." Alice interrupted. "There was someone else with Riley Biers. He…doesn't look human. But not vampire either. He has red-orange eyes, and he seems to be someone that even the newborns feared."

Ethan and Hilda exchanged looks. There is only one person they knew with red-orange eyes. It isn't a very common colour after all. And once more, it seems that their hunch is right.

"Seems like he's here after all." Ethan scowled. "Athens Lee."

Hilda nodded. "Inferno," she muttered. "We have to contact headquarters about the new development. If he's here, the others won't be far behind, and not even we could handle two of them at once." Ethan nodded. Sensing eyes on her, Hilda sighed. "It's nothing you have to worry about. We'll handle it."

Carlisle was curious, but he knew better than to enquire further when Ethan and Hilda have already declined to part with information. "Jacob, do you believe that Sam would agree to an understanding?" he asked.

"As long as we get to kill some vampires," was Jacob's answer.

"Jasper?" Carlisle asked.

Jasper was silent for several moments, weighing the pros and cons of an unlikely alliance with the La Push pack. "They'll give us the numbers," he said at last. "Newborns won't know that they even exist. That'll give us an edge."

"We can help too. It's what we're sent here to do after all." Ethan mused. "We need a better understanding of the terrain and their numbers though before Hilda can come up with a plan. She's our top tactician after all."

"They're gonna get hurt!" Bella protested.

"They will be fine." Hilda interrupted. "The Cullen coven is in more danger than the La Push pack would be actually. Newborns are difficult to fight, but not impossible to take down. You just have to know how."

"We'll all need some training in that case." Carlisle said with a sigh. "Ethan. Hilda. Can you both help us with that?"

"If we can," said Ethan, crossing his arms across his chest, and Hilda nodded. "Jasper, you have experience with newborns, don't you?" He asked, remembering that Jasper had once led an entire army of newborns down South where the majority of the newborn wars are fought.

Jasper nodded. "I can teach them to fight newborns," he said, glancing at Jacob who nodded.

"Name the time and place." Jacob said.

Bella looked distressed, and Hilda swept a lock of hair out of her eyes. "The true winners in a war are those that survives," she murmured, and everyone stared at her. "Just talking to myself." She muttered, shaking her head.

"Look on the bright side though." Ethan said. "At least we're not taking on a dragon demon this time." He joked, much to everyone's confusion.

"And whose fault is it again, Ethan?" Hilda's eye twitched at the mere mention of that disastrous mission.

"A dragon demon?" Quil spluttered. "They really exist?"

He is starting to wonder if all the monsters and such that exist in his fairy tale books as a kid truly existed, and not just fabrications of someone's mind.

"Yeah, they do. But you must know how to find them. We got into trouble with one a couple of years back when we're hunting down a Dragoon." Hilda shrugged. "Most trouble that we ever had with a mission. And well… Dragon demons are mostly extinct, as no one had seen one for over five hundred years. The one that Ethan and I ran into about eighty years back is the first one that we've seen that isn't in our demonology textbook at the Academy. Ethan almost got himself killed back then."

"I did not." Ethan huffed in indignation, much to everyone's amusement. "Just because you said that dragon demons were extinct—"

"I said 'mostly extinct'. There's a difference." Hilda interrupted.

Ethan jabbed a finger towards Hilda, ignoring the amused looks from the others. "Mostly extinct," he said, voice quivering, "is NOT EXTINCT ENOUGH!"

"I see," said Hilda with much sarcasm in her voice, ignoring the stifled giggles and chuckles that the others were giving off around her, "I'll just have them change the entry in the demonology textbook from 'almost extinct' to 'not extinct enough for Ethan. He prefers them really really extinct'. Will that make you happy?"

Ethan coughed loudly. "Anyway, if Athens is really involved, it usually means Inferno is involved too," he told Hilda. "The organisation that we've been after for the better part of fifty years. And chances are that Victoria might be involved too."

"I know that." Hilda muttered. "Damn it. Victoria, what the hell do you think you're doing?" She growled.
