Here is a new chapter….I know it's been a while. My thesis unfortunately has taken over my life and sucks up all my free time. I also went through a huge writer block with this story…its hard writing these characters when they have changed so much since I began writing Bittersweet –That Shonda has somehow even made me respect Mellie (a little). I digress –Happy Reading, Please review, message, etc. Your responses really do push me to continue this story. LM1
Two secret service men arrived first, made sure the floor was secured before Fitz arrived. The only ones present on the floor were a hand-full of medical staff, and Abby, Harrison, and Quinn.
Fitz walked into the double doors of the secured wing.
Everyone stood up and took notice of his presence.
"What is the status of Olivia and Lily?" Fitz asked generally with a worried look on his face.
Abby cleared her throat to speak, but fell apart before ever a word could be muttered.
Quinn came over and tried to comfort her.
Harrison sighed, "Olivia loss consciousness…the doctors are working on her in the ER on the floor below…Lily's doctor will not give us any information because she is a minor and we are not…" His face frowned up, "her biological family!"
Fitz nodded as he walked past them and up to the doctor talking to the nurse.
The doctor did not turn around, so he did not see who tapped his shoulder. He assumed it was one of the Pope and Associates people and muttered quite rudely, "Like I told you five minutes ago, I will not release information to non-family members of the minor…now let me do my job."
The nurse he was talking to looked from the doctor, and saw the guy who tapped his shoulder was the President of the United States. Her mouth dropped in shock, despite knowing someone of importance was coming to this floor of the hospital, because of the security sweep that occurred a hour ago, she never thought it would be President Grant.
Fitz folded his arms, "You will talk to me now . . . My name is Fitzgerald Thomas Grant III. . . I am the President of the United States of America."
The doctor immediately turned around and is shocked to see that it was indeed the President. He began to shake his head and muttered his apologies.
Fitz held up his hand, silencing the doctor, "and that minor child you speak so coldly about is my daughter and those people in there are her family . . . so you will release information to them or me whenever we request information . . . Got it."
The doctor nodded still in shock to be face-to-face with the President, "Yes . . . Yes . . . sir"
Fitz looked at his nametag, "Burnet t. . . Dr. Burnett is it? . . . after this shift you will be assigned to a different patient, I do not entrust the care of my child with you given your attitude problem."
The doctor eyes widen, "but . . . I'm so sorry sir, . . . I didn't know it was you and . . . "
Fitz held up his hand again, "I don't care who you thought it was . . . you do not speak to people as if they are beneath you . . . a part of being a good doctor is healing the sick and injured but it's also about respecting and supporting the families of the sick and injured . . . you Dr. Burnett are very disrespectful and will be assigned somewhere else."
He turned to Cyrus, "Cyrus make a phone call I want the best doctor here immediately."
Cyrus nodded his head knowing not to argue with Fitz in this state of mind. He walked away to make the required phone calls.
Fitz turned to the doctor, who he just destroyed with his words, "now give me a status report on Lily."
The doctor nodded, "The minor child . . . I mean ,Lily Pope sustain no major injuries, she was just a little dehydrated and scared . . . we have started her on fluids . . . I . . . I mean we as a medical staff though it would be best to keep her overnight at least to watch her vitals to make sure she is completely alright."
Fitz nodded, "Good . . . what room is she in?"
The doctor pointed to the left, "room 508."
Fitz walked past the doctor who is beating himself up inside for being a jerk to someone who turned out to be the President of the United States.
Meanwhile in a ER room below . . . .
I got wheeled into a private emergency room and was surrounded by doctors and nurses. I can feel their hands hooking wire after wire to my body. I can hear the beeping of the monitors and the machines as each was turned on. I strained, but cannot open my eyes.
One person asked, "What is the woman's name"
Another person replied "All we know is her name is Olivia"
A person with a soft voice muttered, "34" I assumed that was in reference to my age.
I heard a male muttered, "sustained head injury"
"allergies?" is shouted after that statement
The several voices around me were drained out by a loud sound, "beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep"
Then I heard a person with a deep voice shout," she is coding…her heart has stopped. "The doctor grabbed the machine to shock my chest in order to get my heart beating again.
The doctor instructed his team to move away from my body as he shocked me, "Clear,"
I feel a force pushing down onto my chest and a resulting fiery sensation through my body.
A machine continues to make a loud beeping noise.
"Clear," I began to see flashes of my life, first bike, first skinned knee, first blue ribbon, first kiss, first date, first heartbreak, first day of college, first day meeting Fitz, first time holding Lily.
A doctor shouted, "how long has she been down?"
"Clear," I see Lily's smiling face and Fitz stormy blue eyes.
A doctor instructed, "check her eyes"
"Clear," everything is gone and a flash of light blinds me.
All I can hear is what I assume is the heart monitor signaling flat-lining and the accompanying long beep sound and no voices.
Fitz opened the door of room 508, but stopped dead in his tracks when he sets eyes on Lily.
Lily was lying in the small hospital bed with a iv in her left arm. She looked up at him with tears streaming from her blue eyes as she mumbles something he cannot make out completely.
He walked closer and approached the bed.
Lily stares up at him and muttered through her cries, "mommi…..mommi…mommi"
Fitz felt his heart breaking as he watched his daughter's heart break because she wants her mommy.
Fitz sat on the bed, gently lifted the little toddler into his arms, and rocked her back in forth. This motion does not stop her crying. He could feel her little heart beating fast against his chest. He was concerned if she kept crying, she would do harm to herself.
He was the most powerful man in the country, yet he could not fix this . . . he couldn't give Lily the only thing she wanted in that moment . . . her mom.
He closed his eyes, as a tear rolled down his right cheek. He felt himself begin to humming a familiar song, something he did in times of high stress when he couldn't have Olivia near for their one minutes. His humming turned into formed words.
"I've got this feeling . . . that time's just holding me," Fitz sang off key.
"I'll hit the celling …or else I'll up this townnnnnn." He tapped his finger on the bed.
Lily stopped crying as she looked up at Fitz, whose eyes are still closed and does not realize she is staring at him.
"Tonight I gotta cut . . . loose, . . . footloose kick off your Sunday shoes." When he sang that part a smile spread across his face, as he remembered the countless times, Olivia had forced him to watch Footloose whenever they would have their "normal" couple time. He remembers Olivia dancing around in her underwear and his grey navy shirt swaying her hips, as she sang to the top of her lungs. She would always force him to join her despite his objection and lack of dancing skills outside of ballroom dancing.
He shook his head and began to sing, "Please, Louise pull me off a my knees… Jack, get back c'mon before we crack . . . Lose your blues everybody cut foot . . . " Fitz off-key singing is interrupted as Lily gleefully shouts, "Loooooooose!" finishing the lyric he just song.
Fitz began to chuckle, "So I'm guess little lady…mommy has forced you to watch Footloose a million times too."
Lily smiled for a moment as she appeared to be remembering something, but then her smile turned upside down into a frown. Her bottom lip began to tremble, as tears filled her eyes again. She opened her mouth and begins to wail, "Mommi."
Fitz bits his lip and picked her up, as he stood care to stand near the iv bag that is connected to her. He gently began to rock her back and forth.
"Loose, footloose kick off your Sunday shoes . . . oowhee, Marie shake it, shake for me…whoa, milo c'mon, c'mon let go . . . . lose your blues everybody cut". He looked down at Lily who has stopped crying.
She looked up at him and mutter, "Footloooose"
Fitz smiled slight as he kept singing until Lily is peacefully passed out in his arms. He stand for a moment and stare down at her little chest rise and fall. He never saw anything more beautiful and it was in this moment he knew nothing would be the same because he refuse to live without Lily for another second. She already claimed her rightful place in his heart.
Cyrus quietly walked in noticing the sleeping infant in his arms. He whispered, "Sir we must get back to the White House . . . the sun is rising and we don't want the press knowing you were here all night."
Fitz sighed, "just give me one more minute."
Cyrus nodded and slid out the room giving Fitz one last moment with his daughter before he had to come back to reality and be the President of the United States again.
Fitz gently placed Lily back into her bed. He pulled the blue hospital blanket over her body. He carefully lifted her arms to tuck the sheets neatly around her. He leaned in and placed a kiss on her forehead.
New Fitz isn't playing with anyone these days . . . Dr. Burnett definitely will learn a little R-E-S-P-E-C-T after this incident . . . Oh NO Olivia don't walk into the bright light –Will she live? . . . Awww Daddy and Lily sing-a-long to Footloose by Kenny Loggins (Not familiar with the song, Youtube it, Kevin Bacon dancing 80s style can cheer even the saddest person up!). LM1
