7. "Mi casa es su casa"
As I was going over my follow-up care plan with a nurse, Warren arrived to pick me up. For a brief moment, when our eyes met, I saw a flicker of concern. When the paperwork was all signed and squared away, I was helped into a wheelchair.
A nurse pushed me through the door to the car Warren had pulled up in. I let out a low whistle as I took in the older muscle car with the flame paint job.
"Is that a Camero?" I asked raising an eyebrow.
"Yeah, a '77. You know anything about it?" Warren asked curiously.
"Not much, I just like to appreciate a well made car." I said as Warren helped me stand.
"It's my dad's. I drive it sometimes, when I can't ride my bike." Warren said looking anywhere but at me.
"It's very 'you', Warren." I said feeling a blush creep on my face. I looked at the ground, to avoid his eyes.
Warren mumbled a thank you as he helped get me seated and settled in the car.
"I'm so glad to be getting out of there. Even though I can't go back to school, yet. It was so lonely in the there." I said quietly as we pulled away from the hospital.
"It's only another two weeks until the casts come off and you can go back to school, right?" Warren asked, keeping his eyes on the road while I looked out the window.
"Yeah, but I guess I still have two weeks of sitting around being bored and lonely. After all, you guys still have school. You also have work, too."
I turned my head and looked at Warren out the corner of my eye. His hands were clenching the steering wheel as he glanced at me. His eyes were dark with an emotion I was unable to read.
"I'm taking the next two weeks off work, Hernandez. I had some vacation time anyway." he said, making me look at him fully.
His brows were drawn as he pulled into the driveway. I was almost certain he was hiding something, but it was hard to tell with him.
"Warren, my dad knew you were at my house. Are you sure that I'll be safe here?" I asked trying to get his focus off whatever dark thoughts were in his head.
"You don't have to worry about him, Hernandez. Legally you're an adult now, so you don't need him for anything in your life. He's also not going to get out of jail anytime soon. I'd never let him lay a hand on you again, anyway." Warren said quietly as we just sat in the car for a minute.
"I know I should have told someone what was going on. I should have told you. I'm sorry I didn't." I scoffed as I wiped tears from my eyes. When did I turn into such a sap?
"Don't do that, Hernandez. Don't blame yourself. I saw him hit you and I didn't do anything about it. I'm no better than Kat and Alec for not acting. We failed you, Hernandez. It's a mistake I will never make again." Warren said as he opened the door and got out of the car.
While I was still processing his words, Warren opened my door and held out his hand for me. Blushing slightly, I took his proffered hand as I carefully got out of the car. Warren smirked down at me slyly before scooping me up into his arms.
Chuckling at the surprised squeak I had made, Warren started up the front walk.
"Bienvenidos, Hernandez. Mi casa es su casa." Warren said as he climbed the porch steps. I giggled at his barely recognizable Spanish.
"You might be able to speak Chinese with no problem, Warren, but maybe you should leave Spanish alone." I teased softly.
Setting me down just inside the doorway, Warren smirked as he shut the front door and slipped out of the shoes he was wearing. "At least I tried. A for effort, right?"
I nodded as Warren straightened and took my hand as he pulled me down the hall. I got a tour of the cozy home that he shared with his mother.
"This is going to be your room, Hernandez. Through that door is the bathroom, which also connects to my room." Warren said as I took in my new room.
"We share a bathroom?" I said with wide eyes as his words sunk in.
"Don't worry, we're not gonna walk in on each other in the shower or anything." Warren said quickly, slightly flushed. "The doors lock from inside the bathroom, in case you're worried."
I sat on the bed, feeling exhausted but safe. A twinge of pain in my healing arm made me grimace slightly. Seeing my discomfort, Warren fished a pharmacy big from his pocket and held it out for me.
I thanked Warren as I took the bag and pulled two pill bottles out of it. Reading the lables, I sat the bottle of anxiety medication down on the bedside table before opening the bottle of of pain medication.
Warren walked out of the room to retrieve a water bottle as I shook out one pill from the orange bottle. I smiled at him as he handed me the water bottle so I could take my medication.
"Get some rest, Hernandez." Warren said as he leaned down to kiss my forehead.
"Thank you, Warren. For everything." I said looking up at him.
"Don't mention it, Hernandez."
The kiss was chaste, but it made me feel good as Warren tucked me into bed.
"Could those idiots be any louder?" I heard a familiar voice as I was waking up from my nap.
"Seriously? Do they not realize that Bella just got out of the hospital?" another voice said in irritation.
I opened my eyes to see Kat sitting on the edge of my bed. She was looking at Alec, who was standing with the door cracked open. I could hear a commotion coming from down the hall. Alec shut the door and looked back to the bed. His features softened as he noticed me awake.
"Hey." I said, startling Kat.
"Bella, you're awake." Kat said as she flung her arms around me. "And no wonder with all that racket those morons are making. I don't know how Warren can stand them all being underfoot all the time. They're worse than-"
"How are you feeling, Bella?" Alec asked cutting off Kat.
"I'm not feeling too bad." I said hugging Alec. "What's with all the noise?"
"Stronghold and his groupies are here." Kat said bitterly. "They're waiting for you to wake up so that they can extend their friendship to you. As if they didn't realize that the positions of best friends are already filled."
I looked from Kat to Alec questioningly. Kat wasn't usually this way. Alec rolled his eyes as he shook his head.
"They were already here when we got here. Ambushed us with their invitation for friendship. Then Stronghold's girlfriend made a comment about being your new best friend and, well if it hadn't been for Warren-" Alec explained.
"Then that flower power bitch would've been beaten by an invisible force." Kat said hotly.
"Ah." I giggled at Kat's antics. "Why would they think that I'd want to be surrounded by a group of strangers when I just got out of the hospital?"
"Because the sidekicks are obviously-" Kat started before the door opened cutting her off.
Warren peaked in the room, backed out and closed the door. I could hear him saying something on the other side of the door. After a few minutes, he returned.
"I sent them home." Warren said as he looked me. "I didn't think you'd be up for their company anyway."
Kat scoffed as she made room for Warren to sit at my bedside. He chuckled as he shook his head.
"I would've sent them away sooner if they would listen to me. I'm sorry if they bothered you, Hernandez."
With that, the four of us had a quiet and enjoyable evening discussing nothing important. Time seemed to move by so fast, that before I realized how late it was Kat and Alec were getting ready to leave.
"We'll stop by and see you every day if you want us to, Bella." Alec said as he hugged me.
"And we'll stomp any sidekicks who think they can take our place as your best friends." Kat said smiling evily as she hugged me.
After showing them out, Warren returned to say goodnight. The kiss was deeper than the one from the afternoon and left me breathless.
"Goodnight, Hernandez." Warren said quietly as he pulled away.
"Night, Warren." I whispered happily as I settled into the comfortable bed.
Sleep came easy for me, but not for the 17 year old boy who stood watch over me for several hours in the dark.
