Chapter 7
Sam and Dean were both shocked into silence by Eli's story. Neither of them knew what to do or say after hearing that. They weren't even sure if there was anything they could say or do to make up for what had happened.
Sam felt especially horrible. After all, he had been the one to leave her. But he didn't understand why he couldn't remember something like that. Then it hit him. It was during his year of soullessness. That almost made him feel worse. The fact that he was able to hurt his sister like that and could forget about it easily and shake it off like that was horrible of him.
Dean was extremely concerned about the relationship between his two younger siblings. Abandonment was a big thing to Winchesters. Now, Dean didn't doubt that Sam was soulless when this happened. His little brother would never leave Elizabeth of his own free will. He would die for her. But when Sam was soulless, he seemed to have no boundaries. He had even thrown Dean, his own brother, to a group of vampires. And he knew that, now, Sam was upset about how he had hurt Eli. This also meant that there could now be a small crack in the wall Death had put in place.
"Okay, Eli, there is an explanation for this." Sam began tentatively .
"Really? I would love to hear it." Eli spat out venomously.
"Sam was walking around soulless for a year. He had no control of his actions and he doesn't remember any of it." Dean butted in, trying to take control of the situation before Eli hit Sam again.
"Soulless?" she asked.
"Yeah, I-I didn't have my soul when Cas pulled me out of hell. He left it down in the Cage with Michael and Lucifer." Sam explained further.
"Oh, Cas too. Where's he? I prayed a lot to him and he refused to get his ass down here and help me, but he wouldn't give me the time of day."
"He's fighting a civil war up in heaven between the angels. He won't really talk to us either." Dean reasoned.
"God, you guys get into such messes. And what are you doing here, Dean? Thought you were off to live the apple pie life." Eli seemed to have calmed down a little. She still seemed pissed, but she wasn't yelling or hitting anyone.
"It, uh, didn't work out." Dean said, face falling just a little. Eli sobered up a little and nodded sadly, understanding it was a sore subject to Dean.
"So how long until you guys started looking for me?" Eli asked.
"When we got Sam's soul back, we started looking right away. Sam would barely talk to me. He was pissed at me for letting you go off on your own after he died." Dean answered. Eli nodded.
"So what's the plan?" she inquired, spending no more time on family matters.
"We're gonna get the hell out of Dodge. Sam, pack your crap so we can go." Dean began moving about the room, throwing things into his duffel bag. Sam started to do the same
Both Winchester brothers packed their things as Eli stood and watched. Little did they know things wouldn't be easy for them.
