Chapter 7 » The Way Things should be
Fate is so going to get its ass kicked.
Billie still tried to process what just happened - including the thing that almost happened but she was pretty sure she wasn't going to get over either any time soon. Right now she felt confused and uncertain but most of all irritated.
"I should really go check on Christy." she said and walked past the happy couple as well as Melinda but she didn't get far. As she passed Wyatt, who wasn't too far behind Melinda, she started running. She had already left the stairs behind someone orbed right in front of her.
It surprised Billie that much, she couldn't stop in time and ran right into the Whitelighter, who turned out to be Chris.
"Billie, please, let me explain..."
Unfortunately for him, she wasn't in the mood. She pushed him away quickly and stumbled backwards. "Why? It won't change anything."
Unfortunately for her, he chose not to hear her. "I proposed to her weeks ago, I even sort of forgot about it since I came here!"
"That's your excuse? You forgot you're engaged?!"
"I wasn't engaged! Bianca never gave me an answer until just now. And back home I was hoping for an answer every day but for the past week I barely even thought about her. That's why I didn't mention her, I wasn't lying or keeping it from you, it just never crossed my mind."
"What else did you forget to tell me? Did you even mean it when you apologized about Christy?"
Chris didn't say anything but that was an answer as well – it just wasn't the one Billie had been looking for.
"Billie-"
"Don't. What almost happened down there – it was a mistake. And I'm glad it didn't happen." Even though she wanted her voice to sound strong and confident it came out weak and hurt. Deaf people wouldn't have believed her words.
When she walked past him Chris didn't event try to stop her, but he said: "I'm sorry."
Billie stopped walking, wiped away a tear and turned around. "How am I supposed to believe that now? I can't trust you anymore, so don't bother talking to me again. In fact, stay away from me. The same goes for my sister." With that she turned around, opened the door to her room and smashed it closed behind her.
"What's going on?" Christy asked.
"Remember how you said Chris coming here was fate, so the two us can meet?" Billie's voice was very upset but right now upset was better than crawling beneath her bed because of the humiliation. When Christy nodded she continued: "Well, I bet his fiancée would strongly disagree! That's right! And that's not the only thing he lied about."
She shook her head and let herself fall on her bed. Christy laid down right next to her. Having her sister with her comforted Billie and yet it didn't help the humiliation, the pain... the broken heart.
"I was wrong. I apologize." Christy said but Billie shook her head.
"It's not your fault. To be honest... as mad as I am at Chris and this whole situation - the one I'm most mad at is myself. I was stupid enough to get into this. I mean, what was I thinking... he's from the future. This would be one hell of a long-distance-relationship. And they never work out if you live in two different towns."
They were both silent for a while before Christy suggested something. "You know... Chris is Piper's son, he's bound to be around, as long as he's in this time. But you don't have to be."
Billie frowned and sat up a bit but was still leaning on her elbows. "What?"
Christy sat up as well and looked at her. "Think about it. You still have your room at the dorm, right? We could stay there."
"But, moving out of the manor? I like it here."
"We can come back. It's just temporary. I just think it would be easier for you if you didn't have to see him every day, wouldn't it?"
"I... guess. But I promised the sisters I'd stay and help them to fight demons."
"As for now they have enough help, don't you think? They can manage a few days without you."
Still not convinced Billie looked at her sister. She didn't really have any arguments against moving out, because everything Christy had said was true. Except for the part where it just didn't feel right to leave the sisters.
Christy put a hand on Billie's knee. "You need some time off. It will be good for you. Trust me."
oOoOoOoOo
Wyatt, with his arms crossed, leaned against the door frame and said: "So... I take it the plan backfired?"
Chris wished he hadn't orbed back into the kitchen. Bianca and Melinda had gone to the living room, to figure out the best way to tell the sisters that there were now two more people from the future in this time, while still keeping Melinda's identity a secret. Wyatt, however, had decided to stay with his brother and ask him a rhetorical question.
One that Chris didn't care to answer. Instead he went with: "Why did you bring Bianca with you?!"
"Because she would have killed me if I had left her behind. Besides, I figured you might want to see her. If anything having the person you love by your side makes things easier. Of course I didn't know your feelings have changed..."
"That's ridiculous."
"Is it? Because it looked to me that you were about to kiss her. I was right behind Melinda, I saw what happened. But lucky for you, I think we can all agree that Bianca didn't."
Yeah, lucky me. Chris thought and couldn't help but feeling incredibly unlucky.
Wyatt seemed to pick up on it. "That is a good thing, right? I mean, since you're not in love with Billie-"
"Are you kidding me?" Melinda had walked into the kitchen. "Since when is he not? Bianca's in the bathroom, we're save to talk about this."
Chris sighed. "Why does everyone think I'm in love with Billie?!"
"Duh, because it couldn't be more obvious? And now that Bianca is here you are going to have to make a decision." Mel said.
"There is no decision to be made." Wyatt said. "Billie is from the past, I'm pretty sure that's against some kind of rule."
"So? If Mom and Dad hadn't broken the rules we wouldn't be here."
"This is clearly different and you know it. Besides, Billie is going to die pretty soon anyway."
Melinda frowned. "How would you know that?"
"The Wyatt here is three. And she's babysitting him. I don't remember her and my earliest memory is from when I was five. I'm not saying she wasn't still around but she definitely hasn't been around in years or we would have met her."
Exhaling in frustration Melinda thought about these words for a while before she said: "Okay, so we'll find out why she dies and stop it from happening."
"Melinda, we can't change the past more than we already do merely by being here! It's dangerous and we don't know what kind of future we're going to come back to."
Up until now Chris had been very silent. He really didn't like to talk about whether or not he had feelings for Billie, for the exact same reasons Wyatt had mentioned. But if he didn't say something now Melinda and Wyatt would start a fight and when they fought they always got loud - and no one should hear this.
"Wyatt's right. For all we know Billie's death might even lead to Dad getting unfrozen and that is necessary for you to be born, Mel. We're not here to find out what kills Billie and we won't interfere with anything that isn't about Christy. And this is the last time we talked about this." He was dead serious and his siblings understood this. Melinda lowered her head in disappointment but was silent.
"I am going to marry Bianca and that's that. This is the way things should be." As he said that he felt a great resistance inside of him. That was when he knew: He wasn't going to be happy that way. But this wasn't about happiness. It was about not changing the future. And if he stayed here to be with Billie it would. No. He couldn't be selfish.
Unfortunately, the moment he made the decision to stay with Bianca and not even think about what he may or may not be feeling for Billie... it was also the moment he realized he had feelings for Billie. He could still feel her hands in his, her breath on his lips, even though Bianca had kissed him in the meantime.
Bianca's touch had faded so quickly as if it had never been there and all that was left was the memory of Billie being close to him as well as the desire to be close to her again. And closer.
"No." Melinda suddenly said. "There is no way things are supposed to be, I really think our family history proofs that. If you want to run away from your feelings, that's fine, but don't blame destiny for it, because what you're doing is taking the easy way out."
Before Chris could defend himself Wyatt jumped in with a loud "Enough! Once we got Christy out of the way you can play Cupid all you like – although I'd really prefer you'd leave that to our uncle – but until then I'd appreciate it if you could focus on why we're here! Do you think you can do that or do I have to send you back into the future right now? Because I will!"
Mel sulked in silence and Wyatt took that as an answer, because he responded with: "Good. Now, we should really come up with a plan-"
A "What the hell?!" from the living floor interrupted him. The voice clearly belonged to their mother and even though the voice was very low Chris could make out that she did not sound happy. As if to say You bet! Piper yelled: "CHRIS! COULD YOU COME HERE FOR A SECOND?"
He sighed. "Great. What now?" As if he didn't have enough problems already.
As it turned out it wasn't a new problem – it was an old one, who had met Piper and Paige. They both stared at Bianca when Chris and his siblings arrived.
"I tried explaining that I'm not here to kill them" Bianca said and walked over to Chris. "But for some reason they're not sure if they believe me..."
"Yeah..." Chris said. "I know the reason." After all, the last time the sisters had met Bianca she had been an assassin, but of course this Bianca didn't remember. He turned to his mother and aunt. "Look, this is the Bianca from the alternate future. She's not here to hurt anyone. In fact, she's here to help. Just like-"
"Wyatt?" Piper asked as she saw and recognized her older son.
He smiled and gave her an uncomfortable wave. "Hi Mom. Aunt Paige."
Piper walked over to Wyatt and hugged him. When she realized something she let go of him. "Wait, things didn't get worse right? You're not here because the entire future has begun to go down?"
"No! Don't worry. We just came to see if Chris is alright. We haven't heard from him in a week and got worried. To say the least..."
Chris sighed at the tone his brother took with the last words. "Cut it out, will you? It's not like I could have called." He was still mad that he brought Bianca with him, even though he knew Wyatt hadn't made a mistake. Of course he'd bring his girlfriend, Chris would have done the same. That was, if he knew who that was.
"Still." Bianca said and put an arm around his waist. "Never scare me like that again, okay?"
He managed to force a decent smile on his lips, nodded and put an arm around her as well. "I won't."
When they heard footsteps they all turned around and were surprised to see who was walking down the stairs. Or at least everyone, except for Bianca. She frowned and asked Chris in a whisper: "Who is this?"
"That would be Christy... otherwise known as her, but no one believes me."
Bianca's jaw dropped open and her eyes wandered back to Christy who was examining them all. She was also the first one to speak. "Hello." Her voice was low, even kind of shy, Chris had to contain himself not to snort.
"Christy... it's nice to finally see you outside of Billie's room." Piper said. She didn't get much of a reaction out of the frightened witch (or at least that was what Chris supposed what she was going for with her attitude) except for a reserved smile.
She then looked up the stairs. "Are you coming?"
"Yeah yeah" Billie said and hurried down the stairs. Chris frowned as he saw that she was carrying a suitcase. "This is heavy, you know."
"Why the suitcase?" he asked but she ignored him and simply continued her way down. He then remembered her words "Don't bother talking to me again" and was silent, at least for now.
Piper, however, seemed to have a similar question. She stepped forwards and asked: "Billie, what's going on?"
"I'm moving out. Well... we're moving out... back to the dorm. At least until everyone is back in the time they belong into."
"That kind of raises more questions that it answers." Paige said. "Why are you leaving?"
"Ask Chris. He knows." Billie said in a snippy tone.
Suddenly forgetting all over Bianca he let go of her and walked over to Billie. "Look, I already apologized! I shouldn't have lied and kept... secrets, but this is no reason for you to move out!" He didn't have a secret agenda. He simply and truly didn't want Billie to move out, because of her and nothing else.
Of course she seemed to interpret his words a little different. "Save it, okay? You just don't want to let Christy out your sight because you don't trust her!"
"No, that's not it!"
"You're full of lies! You've been lying from the moment you got here! And not just to me!"
"What are you talking about?"
Billie hesitated for a moment. Chris honestly had no idea what she meant but he wasn't sure he wanted her to say it in front of everyone. When she continued she looked past him, at Piper.
"Melinda isn't an old friend of mine. She's from the future, too, and your daughter."
The reactions went from awkward silence to shocked inhaling and putting hands over mouths. Chris however, simply looked at her in disbelieve. He wanted to yell at her, wanted to ask her if she was out of her mind... but at the same time he wasn't sure if he had the right to be mad at her.
After a while he settled for a simple: "Why?"
"I figured since you're doing everything but helping me with my sister I see no reason why I should continue to help you with yours." Billie replied in a low voice. "Come on, Christy." she added in a louder voice but didn't take her eyes off of Chris. "We're leaving."
And they did. Before Chris could even think about going after them Piper said: "Okay... everyone into the living room." Her voice was calm but it was clearly the kind of calm that indicated that they were in trouble.
Piper went ahead but soon realized that no one was about to join her. "NOW!"
They startled and followed her.
If 8 Seasons of Charmed have taught us anything it's beware the wrath of Piper... lol
