Chapter Seven: The First Day of School
When the summer first started, I thought I would dread coming back to school even though I knew I'd have my friends with me. Although now I didn't dread going back to school, I was still nervous as hell. No matter how much my friends reassured me that everything was going to be fine, I couldn't help but be worried. Being late didn't really help my case either.
I had forgotten to set my alarm last night because Jace came over last night to blow off some steam from his latest fight with Simon. In the few days that Jace has been back, he had fought with Simon non-stop; there were always at each other's throats. When we got back to the city, the first thing we did was figure out who was going to be living with whom.
Isabelle and I decided to move out of Alec and Izzy's apartment and into a new one with Maia. Our apartment sat on top of a café that my Uncle Luke owned. We spent most of our time in the café part of the building. Luke let us live rent free as long as we helped out around the café which we did gladly. We managed to get the boys to agree to help out as well. We had so much fun those last few days before school started and none of us wanted to go back.
"Clary! Jace! You better get your asses up! We have to be to school in twenty minutes!" Maia pounded on the door waking me from my sleep. I looked over at Jace to find him fast asleep. Knowing that it was going to take him a while to get up, I yelled back, "You guys go ahead! We'll meet you at the school!"
"Okay. See you there," Maia replied.
I didn't bother to wake Jace up right away knowing that if I did, he'd hog the bathroom. Thankfully, I had taken a shower last night and Izzy had picked out an outfit for me the day before. The clothes she had picked out (with the help of Maia) weren't as bad as I thought they would be. Isabelle and Maia had picked out a beautiful blue sundress with a black cardigan. They decided to let me wear my combat boots with it knowing that if they tried to put me in anything else, they would have a full scale war on their hands. After I finished getting dressed, I went back into my room to wake Jace up.
"Jace. Come on, we have to get to school." I shook him as I kneeled in front of him. He didn't respond. Of course. I rolled my eyes as I leaned in closer and brushed my lips over his. He opened one of his eyes just a tiny bit.
"Do we have to?" He groaned, realizing why I was waking him up.
"Yes. We do." I rested my hand on his cheek. He leaned into my palm before sighing and sitting up and raking a hand through his hair.
"Are you sure? You know I don't have anything here to wear." He tried again, grinning at me. I glared and threw one of the shirts he had left here at him.
"Haha, nice try. You leave half of your wardrobe here!" I rolled my eyes as he walked into the bathroom to freshen up. It's a good thing he left an extra toothbrush here as well.
After taking a quick shower and getting dressed in a record amount of time, we filed out of the apartment and downstairs to the coffee shop to grab a quick bite to eat.
"Come on, Jace! We don't have time for you to stuff your face. We're going to have to walk to school, the traffic's too bad," I scolded as I dragged Jace away from the muffin basket and out the door.
"So, are you nervous?" Jace asked as he wrapped his arm around my shoulders.
"I wasn't until you said something," I glared at him.
"Clary. There's nothing to be nervous about. I'll be here the entire time." He planted a kiss on my temple.
"Jace, we're not going to have every class together," I sighed as I leaned into him. When we finally made it to school, first period had just started so the halls were empty which made it easy for us to make our way to the front desk.
"Well, hello there, you two! Shouldn't you be in class already?" The receptionist greeted us as we walked up to the front desk.
"This morning's traffic was really bad." Jace told her the lie that everyone uses when they sleep in.
The receptionist smiled and the light in her eyes made it clear that she knew the real reason we were late. "That's New York for you. If you'll just give me your names, I'll go grab your schedules."
"Thank you, ma'am. It's Clary Fray and Jace Herondale," I grinned at her.
"Here are your schedules. I wouldn't even bother going to your first periods seeing as it's almost over with. Before you go, let me print you out a pass." She handed us our schedules before turning around to print our passes out.
"Let's see what we have together," Jace grabbed my schedule before I even got a chance to look at it. "Hmm, we have three classes together. 2nd, 4th, and 8th period."
"I wonder if we have any classes with the others," I wondered as I pulled my schedule out of Jace's grasp and looked at it.
"I guess we'll have to compare at lunch." He looked up when he finished studying his schedule.
"I would put your stuff in your lockers then go straight to your second period classes. The bell's about to ring." The receptionist handed us our tardy passes and waved goodbye.
"Let's see…whose locker's closer?" I asked as I scanned my schedule for my locker number.
"Well, I just found mine so I'd say mine was," Jace smirked at me as he looked from his schedule to the locker in front of us.
"Hurry up and put your stuff in it. I don't want to be late for second period, I have a feeling that my locker is on the other side of the school," I huffed as I leaned against the locker next to Jace's.
The bell rung just as Jace finished putting everything in his locker. Doors started opening all around us and with them students came pouring out into the hallway. I scanned the crowds, searching for Isabelle, Maia, Jordan, Alec, or Simon. While I scanned the crowds I happened to catch the eyes of a guy just coming out of the class room across from Jace's locker.
The boy had on a white long-sleeved shirt with black cargo shorts and grey vans. For some unknown reason I started to hyperventilate as I focused on his face. He had dark brown—no, black— eyes and platinum white hair. Sebastian Verlac. Of course. He would have to be the reason I start to panic. Judging from the grin on his face, he didn't seem to recognize me. I couldn't stop staring at him, wondering how he didn't recognize me. Hell, he tortured me every day since freshman year in high school. You'd think a tool like him would recognize all his victims.
"Clary? Are you even paying attention to me? Who are you staring at?" Jace asked, sounding concerned as he followed my line of sight to the douchebag known as Sebastian.
"It's him, Jace." I didn't even have to clarify who he was for Jace to know I was talking about Sebastian.
"I can't believe that asshole. He's checking you out!" Jace glared at him. "Let me make it clear to him that you are not on the market."
Jace turned towards me, putting one hand on my waist and placed the other on the locker above my head. He leaned in and kissed me, hard. I gasped, not expecting that much intensity from him. We hardly ever kissed this way in public. We usually just stuck to soft pecks and kisses on the cheek when in public.
"Jace, as much as I'm enjoying this we have to go to my locker then go to our second period," I gasped as we broke apart and he placed light kisses on my neck. He moved his hand from my waist to my lower back and pulled me closer to him.
"You know, I started out trying to show that ass that you're mine but now…I'm having too much fun," he whispered as he trailed his lips towards my ear.
I closed my eyes when I felt his lips kiss my earlobe. "Jace. We have to go. Now."
"Fine, but we will be continuing this later." The words came out huskily and I started to rethink my decision about going to class. Before I could reply, someone cleared their throat. Looking over Jace's shoulder, I found that it was Sebastian.
When Jace glanced over and saw that it was him, he glared and asked roughly, "Can we help you?"
"Yeah, you can by taking your little make-out session somewhere else other than my locker." He glared back. "Actually, Blondie, maybe you should just leave. The ginger is more than welcome to stay."
He winked at me when he finished talking. Knowing that Jace was about to go off any second, I grabbed his arm and led him away from the locker and towards mine without another word.
"I could kick his ass right now." Jace scowled as he put his arm around my waist and moved me in front of him so we could dodge people easier.
"As much as I want you to, I don't think that would be a good way to start off on your first day of school." I squeezed the arm that was around my waist as we turned the corner in search of my locker. We finally found it after we turned one more corner and walked to the end of the hallway.
"I can't believe you had to put up with that douche for four years. I already don't like after five minutes!" He turned towards me as I put my things in my locker. "Clary, you should have told us to come sooner. Jordan, Simon, Alec, and I would have beaten the living hell out of him."
"I know. Well, you guys are here now. And that's all that matters." I grabbed his hand and closed my locker.
"You're right. I'll try not to let him get to me. No promises though." Jace pulled me to his side and placed a quick kiss to my temple.
By the time we made it to our second period the bell was just ringing. We weren't the only ones just getting there so we had to wait just outside the doorway for people to go through. The teacher must have been taking roll by the door. As soon as we got into the doorway, Jace, who was scanning the room for one of our friends, swore. I looked up to see what had made him swear only to spot Sebastian sitting in the middle of the class room, blatantly staring at me. He trailed his eyes over my figure causing me to shudder and huddle closer to Jace. He smirked at me when he finally pulled his eyes away from my body and looked at my face. Looking away from Sebastian, I gave the teacher my name and rushed to a seat in the back, Jace following me.
This was going to be one long ass day.
So sorry for the wait ladies and gents. I've been so busy. I would have updated when I updated The Beginning but I had only written 100 words. But luckily I'm on my Spring Break and the words just seem to be flowing outta me. *knocks on wood* don't want to jinx anything. Though words are flowing like a Niagara Falls please leave any ideas you have in a review! Thank you so much everyone for dealing with these long updates. I'm trying my best to juggle writing two stories (both of which I'm pretty stumped on) school, chores, my social life, and reading at the same time. My updating is probably going to get even worse soon, seeing as I'm looking for a job… I don't know how that's going to work but hopefully I'll be finished with both stories. Sorry for this long author's note. Thanks again everyone! You guys are the best. You guys are what make me want to keep going (writing wise). I'll try to update soon!
Until Next Time,
