Previously in Knight in Shining… Wetsuits:

The entire Ops centre watched in silence. At least they were silent. Kensi started off quiet but after the 20th slice Deeks could hear a whimper. Kensi could only last for so long under pain. She cried out with teeth clenched. Over her sounds of pain Deccan yelled, "So Detective, say goodbye to your love Detective… Because the next time you will be seeing her, she will be nothing more than a body."

And with that Deccan shut off the camera and the screen in Ops went blank. The clock was really ticking now.

Chapter 7: Serve and Protect-

The Ops Centre was quiet with shock. Everyone felt bad but no one felt worse than Deeks. And no one knew what to say that would comfort him.

Deeks felt as though he was in shock. What was he supposed to say? How do you react when you just spent 20 minutes watching the woman that you love being tortured and you knew it was your fault? So Deeks did what he did best – what every agent in that room did best – compartmentalize.

"Nell," Deeks was the first to speak, his voice nothing more than a croak. "Is it possible to combine facial rec with Kaleidoscope?"

It took Nell a moment to react to the question. "Uh… Yeah I can do it."

"Check the traffic cameras around Kensi's home. I need you to verify Deccan's story. There isn't much that would slip past Kensi; if what he says was true he had to be doing it for months. Not to mention I need to find out how he found out about her. She's a federal agent, her identity – not to mention her partnership with me - should be protected."

Nell and Eric scrambled to get the information. Quickly they found what they were looking for.

"Following Deccan's timeline, a man under the name of Tyler Hunt rented an apartment on the same block as Kensi." Nell said.

"Kaleidoscope verifies that every day he left at 9 and came back at 5 for work. Then at 7 every day he walked around the block. He was dedicated… He didn't break his cover for a second."

Nell took over for Eric once again. "There is a cell phone registered under the same alias. Regular phone calls, pizza delivery, paying bills…. Oh what's this?"

Deeks swooped down on Nell. "What's what?"

"There seems to be a call from Tyler – I mean Deccan's phone to the LAPD switchboard."

Callen furrowed his brow. "Why would a convicted killer call the police? Isn't the whole point of the cover to lie low?"

Deeks spoke slowly. "Because he was trying to find me. Was the call before he rented the apartment?"

"Yeah. How did you know?" Eric asked.

"Because the last time he saw me I was working for the LAPD. He was trying to see if I was still with them or if I had gone somewhere else. That must have been how Deccan knew about Kensi. Someone at LAPD compromised us."

Callen looked furious. "Who the hell would be stupid enough to do that?" Then he paused… "Never mind I think I know who would do something like that…"

Deeks nodded at him. "Of course… The one officer who hates me more than anything…. Brady."

Callen watched Deeks screech up to the LAPD headquarters and storm out. The thought to tell him to calm down passed through Callen's head. But then he remembered the way most of the officers treated Deeks. And then he remembered that one of them hated Deeks so much that they would commit treason and compromise a federal agent.

"Hey look who decided to get off his board, what –"

The officer who was trying to joke about Deeks instantly stopped talked when Sam, Callen, and Deeks send him their worst glares.

"Back again so soon? What feel like screwing up more LAPD investigations?"

Deeks paused at the sound of Brady's voice. He turned slowly and then spoke. His tone was the quietist, the most serious, and the scariest thing that Callen had heard come from Deeks. The amount of intimidation in his words rivaled even when he was Max Gentry.

"Remember when I said that I had a shitty day? Yeah that day just got shittier. Not only did a guy that the LAPD conveniently didn't tell me escaped from prison kidnap my partner. But now I found out that the reason he managed to find where an elite undercover agent lived was because someone here decided that they hated me so much they compromised a federal agent. So tell me Brady, were so obscenely thick that you would do something so dumb?"

As tough as Brady pretended to be, he swallowed at the tone in Deeks' voice. It was obvious that now was not the time to try and make a joke. Now was the time to cover his ass.

Callen visibly watched the wheels turn in this guy's head as he tried to find a way out of the hole he dug for himself.

"Look no mysterious guy called up swearing revenge on you Deeks… I'm not that stupid!"

Deeks scoffed, "Really? Because you're looking like it right now!" Deeks leaning in a little closer and whispered in his ear. "I see you're sweating Brady. Now why would that be? I really hope it isn't because you're lying to me."

After leaning back and fixing Brady with the worst glare he could give, Brady cracked. "Fine I'll spill."

Deeks let out the breath that he didn't even know he was holding and took a step back. He got him to crack; now it was Sam and Callen's turn to get all of the information. He was too unstable to be trusted around Brady right now. He leaned back on Brady's desk listening to his confession while simultaneously keeping an eye on all of the cops around him. He didn't notice what a scene he had been making.

"Some guy called the switch board the day I was working the phones asking about Deeks. He wasn't spilling that he wanted Deeks killed but he was asking a lot of questions. Wanted to know if Deeks was still working with the LAPD. I told him technically he was. Wanted to know where he was. Said I didn't know, he was working with some super secret Navy Agency. Wanted to know if he was married, or had a girlfriend. I said not that I knew of, just one super hot partner."

The three men froze. It was Callen who spoke first, using the voice that confirmed all of the rumors that were floating around the precinct about him. "What. Did. You. Say. About. His. Partner." Callen growled, pausing between words, making his point extremely clear.

Brady's eyes opened even wider. "Nothing much. Just that her name was Kensi Blye, she was smoking hot, and that I didn't know how Deeks managed to keep her around. He asked for the specific name of that agency you work for so I told him NCIS. Don't give me that look! It's not like that is secret information. Most cops and criminals in this city know what agency that Deeks worked for."

Called swallowed as he too tried to control his anger. He didn't even look at Deeks for fear of what expression was on Deeks' face. "Doesn't matter that you say most people know what agency Deeks' works for. He is an undercover cop, meaning that where he works is not public record. Not to mention, while NCIS is not a secret agency, the Office of Special Projects – where Deeks is a liaison – is a secret. Divulging who the agents are is a federal offense. So… Sam would you like to do the honors?"

"Gladly." Sam said as he walked forward. He pulled out his handcuffs and started reciting Brady his rights. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can, and will be used against you in the court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney one will be appointed to you..."

"Would it be bad if I punched him in the face?" Deeks asked as Brady was escorted away.

"I wouldn't see anything if you did." Callen responded.

Deeks laughed but made no move to punch the man in handcuffs. It would only succeed in giving him a sore hand and even more paperwork to fill out. However he did walk up to him and almost hiss in his ear, "Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the motto for LAPD was to serve and protect. And I know you hate me Brady… But I never thought you would do something like this. I hope you can live with the knowledge that because you were blinded by hatred, my partner could die. Way to Serve and Protect…" He then walked back to Callen as if nothing had happened. Callen wondered what Deeks had said to the man but then thought that something we better unknown.

"Just send him to the boat shed, see if you can get anything else out of him. I'm going to stay here. LAPD keeps a record of all calls into the switchboard. I doubt Brady was smart enough to delete the transcript."

Callen took a good look at Deeks. His hair was limp, there were dark circles around his eyes, and his eyes themselves had lost all their spark. Callen chose to stay quiet about how Deeks seems to have appointed himself as temporary team leader. He remembered what it was like when Sam was kidnapped and tortured. He ran himself ragged looking for him. And then it was because of Quinn's past not his own. He could not image what Deeks was currently feeling… He left with Sam and the douche bag in cuffs leaving Deeks to work on the phone call.

Deeks ignored the cops giving him glares and looks of pity. Frankly he didn't have the energy to deal with either. He sat down at Brady's computer and uploaded the transcript page. For the first time since he heard about what happened to Kensi he smiled. Thankfully the stupidity of Brady was something to be counted on.

He started reading the transcript and could feel himself becoming more and more confused. While there was no denying that Deccan found out that Deeks had a partner he really cared about from Brady, no where does it mention where she lived. So Deeks stared at the screen and wondered… if not from Brady, where did he find the information?

A/N: I'm so so so so sorry for the long wait. Grade 10 was crazy busy this year and when I was not studying or eating, I was sleeping… Seriously I haven't even had a sleepover with my best friends since Christmas. How sad is that? But you don't want to hear about my pathetic social life. So here is another chapter… Sorry for it being short and probably not all that good… I seem to just have lost inspiration but I am working on it. Thank you everyone for sticking with me!

As always, review!
