"Hey Mom," Eric greeted as he walked into the living room from the kitchen and spotted his now five month pregnant mother seated on the sofa.
He was heading for the staircase in the room but stopped in his tracks when he spotted the materials that were surrounding his mother. There was a bag of yarn beside her, two oversized chopsticks in her hands, and new made from yarn masterpiece in the making resting in her lap. It didn't take a genius to figure out what the expectant mother was up to.
"You're knitting," he son stated the obvious to which Kitty just smiled at making Eric force his smile back into place.
It wasn't that Kitty was bad at knitting. She had made some great items over the years. Socks, scarves, hats, sweaters and the like; they were all very warm and cozy but not exactly fashionable. Case and point were the sweaters she was known for making for special occasions like birthdays, the ones that were made with bright colors and had your name stitched on in front. Eric could remember Hyde getting one of the sweaters for his last birthday but his main concern was figuring who's birthday was coming up next and most importantly who would be the next victim. His eyes became a little larger than usual and for a split second he felt his heart stop. It was him.
"Um Mom," he began to say hoping he sounded and appeared as causal as he could walked closer to his sitting mother, "I just wanna say as you know, a friendly reminder, you've already made me a sweater with my name. Not that I wouldn't love a matching set!" he quick added in, not wanting to face the wrath of a pregnant woman.
Kitty laughed one of her well known laughs, "Oh Eric, honey, don't worry I'm not making you anything. I'm making something for the baby."
"Oh." Eric said sounding and feeling more disappointed than he thought he would, dropping into the empty seat on Kitty's right side; Eric was still getting used to the idea of their being a new baby in the house and just like any child—even at his age—expecting a new sibling there was bound to be some hidden jealousy, "So what are you making it?"
After giving him a quick warning glance, Kitty unfolded her in progress project on her lap. "I'm making him or her a baby blanket, that way they can have their own blanky boo."
Eric couldn't help but smile a bit bashfully when he heard his mom use the term he's used for his own baby blanket growing up. His grin became even larger as he realized that if she was making the new baby their own new blanket he wouldn't have to share his banky boo..eh old baby blanket.
"Hey that's a great idea." He said happily.
Seeing her son's enthusiasm made Kitty's smile grow as well, "Well thank you, sweetie. You know I made both yours and Laurie's baby blankets too."
"You did?" Eric asked surprised and when she nodded his surprise increased. How had he not known this?
"Laurie's may not have come out the best and was more of a mess but then I really improved when I made yours and now I think I've gotten even better making this one!" Kitty was happy to share.
Hearing the statement made Eric nodded his head, "It kind of went the same way with us kids too right? Since you know, Laurie's pretty a mess."
Kitty shook her head at Eric's words. They may have been right but it didn't mean she had to agree with them, instead she change the subject by lifting up what was done with the new baby blanket so far, "What do you think?"
The blanket or blanket-to-be was at a very good size almost at two feet long. The stitching was fine and looked almost like a blanket that could be bought over at Price Mart. The only difference was with this blanket, just by looking at it, one could tell a lot of work and love had been put into each stitch that was made. Eric smiled at the pink square with the pink and blue border surrounding three of its finished sides.
"It looks great, Mom." He said meaning his words, although he did have one concern with the product. "But I don't know it's kinda a little too…pink. I mean what if the baby's a boy? You really think Red Forman's gonna let you wrap his son up in a pink blanket?"
The smile playing on Kitty's lips stayed in place as she lowered the material back onto her lap, "The blanket's going to be reversible, this is only one side of the blanket, later I'm going to come back and do the other side in blue. This way we can use the pink side if the baby's a girl and the blue side if the baby's a boy and not have to hear any complaints from your father."
"You're a very smart lady, Mom," stated Eric as he pointed his finger at her.
Eric's very compliment had made Kitty's day and she was just about to share this with him when she felt a sudden but familiar feeling occurring inside her tummy. Her hands quickly attached themselves to the side of her growing belly, "Oh!"
As he watched his mother's actions, Eric's browns scrunched into a concerned frown, "Mom, is everything okay?"
"Mmhm." Kitty nodded before looking up from her stomach that held her unborn baby to her son sitting right beside her and looking more than a little worried, "I…" suddenly Kitty stopped and realized that explaining what had happened might be a little difficult to do especially since Eric didn't have much experience here.
Without saying another word Kitty reach other with her right hand and grabbed Eric's left hand, placing it right where her hand previously been. She kept her hand above his and applied just a tiny bit of pressure. Eric had no idea what his mother was doing and was beginning to worry that maybe she was trying to tell help that something was wrong but had somehow lost her voice to do so?
"Mom, wha…" was all that he managed to get out before he felt beneath his palm a little push. Immediately he yanked his hand out of his mom's hold and pulled it away from her belly. He was staring down at her baby bump with eyes large with fright, looking at it as if the little moment he'd felt coming from it had been more of a sharp bite. "What was…Mom, are you okay? I mean is that…is that normal?"
Kitty couldn't help but release a joyful laugh at her son's reaction. It really was so cute how worried he was, but because she didn't want him to worry too much, she smiled and began to answer his questions, "Oh sweetie, I'm fine. And it more than normal," her grin slowly extended a few more inches as she rubbed her tummy, "That's your little brother or sister kicking."
The fear that Eric wore on his face swiftly diminished into a look of surprise and even a bit of awe.
"But Mom I like…I really felt that." Eric said, his amazement in the situation was clear by just his voice. "I mean that was like a little tiny foot kicking from inside you…Mom, I knew were pregnant and having a bay and all but I think this is the first time I'm really realizing that you have a little tiny human inside of you."
Smiling at her son while she continued to rub her belly, Kitty nodded, "Mmhmm."
"Wow." Eric breathed in amazement, his eyes glued to his mother's growing tummy where the baby was growing. "Mom, I don't know if I've told you before but I'm really happy for you."
"Thank you, sweetie." She replied sounding close to tears; tears that she knew she couldn't blame solely on the hormones of pregnancy. As if he or she wanted to keep mommy from crying, the unborn Forman baby gave another little kick and filled Kitty with excitement again. "Put your hand back again honey, he or she's kicking again."
This time Eric was more eager to feel the movement coming from his incoming sibling and he, on his own, moved his hand back to the side of Kitty's stomach. Soon enough there was that little flutter felt beneath his palm and it made Eric's grin double in size.
"Wow." He repeated again, he knew it wasn't a word that gave the feeling enough justice but the only thing that came to mind when he felt the little kicks was wow. Keeping his hand on his mom's belly, Eric looked up at her and asked, "Does it hurt?"
"No, honey." Kitty shook her head, her smile still strong as she saw his concern for her and her future baby, "Sometimes it's a little uncomfortable, depending on where the kick is, but it never really hurts."
Eric moved his head up and down in an understanding manner but there was still one question he had, "Did I ever hurt you?"
"Oh of course not, honey!" she was quick to dismiss the thought from his mind as she placed her hand over her his and gave it a quick squeeze before giving a quick laugh as she began to think back to her previous pregnancy years ago, "You were such a good baby. You didn't kick a lot but when you did they were always nice gentle kicks just to remind us that you were there and doing okay."
Hearing about what he had been like as a baby—even before he had been born—made Eric smile and because Kitty always loved talking about her children and the memories she had with them she continued to share a little more.
"You know, I think my pregnancy with you was probably my easiest pregnancy."
"Yeah?"
"Mmhm." Kitty confirmed before continuing, "You were so calm and peaceful, you were born on the exact due date that the doctor had predicted for you, and I didn't have any morning sickness with you like I had with Laurie and this baby."
A smirked played on Eric's lips as he learned these details. "At least I'll always be the favorite unborn child," he muttered, looking down at the bump beneath his hand and hoping his mother hadn't heard his words.
But of course, she had.
Kitty frowned slightly as she questioned, "Now what is that supposed to mean? You know your father and I don't have favorites."
"Maybe you don't but Dad does," Eric stated after a scoff. "And it's hard enough staying in that Second Favorite slot now."
"Eric…" his mother tried to interject.
"No, Mom it's fine. Really." He said before she could say anything more, "I didn't really mean it anyway. I guess I'm just still getting used to the idea that…I won't be the baby of the family anymore.
"Eric, honey…" Kitty tried again, her tone softer this time.
However, Eric still wasn't having any of it and he now felt quite embarrassed about the confession he'd just made. He knew what his mother was going to say in response to his words but he just wanted to forget he'd ever said them. He removed his right hand from the baby bump and clasped it together with his left hand before looking down and starting to speak. "I know, I know I'm eighteen years old. I'm going off to college this year. I'm not a baby anymore. It's…it was a dumb thing to say."
"It was not a dumb thing to say, honey," argued Kitty while rubbing his arm in a soothing manner. "And I'll have you know that no matter how old you get, you will always be my baby."
The corners of Eric's mouth twitched upwards, making Kitty smile more as she continued.
"And yes, you are going off to college this year and leaving home…" she had to paused a few moments after saying these words to sniffle and blink back a few tears before she composed herself again and gave a tight smile. "But no matter where you go or what you do, your father and I will always love you. No favorite slots involved."
Eric wasn't too sure how true that last statement would be but it was nice to hear.
"Now you may not be the baby of the family anymore, with the baby coming and all," Kitty admitted knowing there wasn't an easy solution or reassuring words that could help with the concern. "But you're going to be a big brother and I think you'll like that even more."
"Yeah, I guess having a little sister or brother might not be so bad." Eric agreed and as he spoke the words he realized how true they really were, however when a new thought occurred to him he couldn't help but feel a pang of panic. "Oh my God. I'm gonna be an older sibling. Like Laurie." He turned to his mother with terror in his eyes, "Mom, I'm not gonna be like Laurie, am I?"
Kitty couldn't help but laugh again and she smiled as she slid her hand down her son's arm to his hands, "Of course not, sweetie. You're going to be a great big brother."
"Thanks, Mom."
He smiled at his mother who returned the smile before she grabbed his hand again and brought it over to her belly just in time to feel another tiny kick from the growing baby. The little flurry feeling under his palm caused Eric's grin to grow and he kept his hand on his mother's stomach for awhile longer.
Mother and son—and baby—were enjoying the peaceful quite moment when the swinging door was unexpectedly pushed open.
"Hey Forman," greeted Steven Hyde as he stepped into the room looking just a tad bit irritated, "I thought we were heading over to The Hub to meet with Kelso and Fez."
Eric had completely forgotten about those plans. He had forgotten that the reason he'd come into the living room in the first place was to go upstairs and grab some snack money from his room. He had forgotten that Hyde had been waiting for him during these last few minutes.
And he still didn't appear to remember any of this; instead he looked up at his friend with a grand smile on his face as he happily announced, "Hyde, the baby's kicking!"
"Cool," Hyde replied with an aloof head nod. "So you in or not?"
Before Eric could respond in any way, Kitty piped up with her own question, "Steven, don't you wanna feel the baby kicking?"
Hyde tried to be polite while declining the offer as fast as he could, "No, that okay, Mrs. Forman. It's more of family thing…"
"Steven, don't be silly. You know you are an important part of this family," Kitty reminded in a slightly scolding tone and then patted the open seat on her left. "Come on over here."
"Really Mrs. Forman…" Hyde tried again.
"Now."
In that next moment Hyde was sitting beside Kitty and her knitting supplies. He knew it was always a bad idea to try to argue with Mrs. Forman. It was an even worse idea to try to argue with a pregnant Mrs. Forman. Hyde sat a bit awkwardly merely staring at Eric and Kitty until she reached over and grabbed his left hand and placed it on her stomach close to where Eric's was.
Hyde wasn't really excited or too comfortable with the current set up; he wasn't even sure what he was expecting the kick to feel like but as soon as he felt the light little press coming from under his hand, he knew that was it.
"Whoa," was Hyde's first response and a smirk slowly crawled on his lips as he looked up at Mrs. Forman's smiling face. "That's pretty cool."
His words may not have been said with as much animation as Eric's had but Kitty could tell by the look on his face and in his unshaded he too was amazed by what he felt. He'd really meant his Zen words.
"Does it hurt?" He couldn't help but wonder aloud making Kitty giggle.
"That's what I asked!" Eric exclaimed, glad that he wasn't the only one who had been worried.
Kitty shook her head her lips still stretched into a smile, "No, it does not hurt."
"What does it feel like, Mom?" a curious Eric asked.
"It feels…" Kitty struggled for the right word to describe the wonderful almost indescribable feeling; her smile grew a few more inches, "Magical." Seeing the curious expressions still worn on her sons' faces she gave a small laugh and started again, "It's a little hard to describe for a person who's never felt it before."
The boys nodded understandingly.
"Kinda makes me wish I could get pregnant," Eric joked lightly.
"Oh jeeze," a new voice groaned from the direction of where the boys had come in through. "It's like you wait for me to come in to say these kinds of things."
Eric was going to make a 'smart-mouth' comment in response to his father's words but decided against it, not wanting to ruin the nice family moment. He even thought it might be nice to get him involved too.
"Hey Dad, the baby's kicking," he informed, his hand still resting on Kitty's tummy.
Red had just settled into his armchair and opened up his paper. "That's nice," he said as he eyes scanned the printed words.
"What's wrong, Red? You don't wanna feel the kid kickin'?" asked Hyde. "The kid's actually got a better kick than Forman. Not as good as Jackie though."
"No, I'm good," came Red response, never moving his gaze off the newspaper.
Frowning slightly, Eric wondered why his mother hadn't said anything yet but he wasn't giving up yet. "Come on, Dad. It's the miracle of life!"
This got Red's attention. He crumbled his paper down to his lap and scowled at the pair on the sofa. It was the reaction Eric was hoping for but it was better than nothing!
"That's not the miracle of life," Red grumbled, then lifted his index and middle finger in Kitty's direction, "That is the baby kicking in your mother's stomach. I've felt plenty of those already."
"Yeah, but Dad, this isn't me or Laurie. This is a brand new baby with brand new kicks." Eric reminded.
"You're father was talking about the new baby," stated Kitty as she rubbed her hands on the side of her tummy, now that both Hyde and Eric had removed theirs. "He's felt this baby kick plenty of times."
Red looked over at his shocked looking son with a raised eyebrow as if saying 'See?' while Hyde's brows furrowed slightly.
"This wasn't the first time the baby kicked?" he asked.
While Red gave a scoff in reply, Kitty continued to smile as she shook her head, "No, this baby's been kicking up a storm!" she shared with a small giggle, her hands still gliding over her baby bump. "Especially when we're trying to sleep."
"This kid's keeping me awake more now than it will when it's born," grumbled Red from behind is once again raised newspaper.
Kitty gave her husband a knowing look, "That's probably because instead of you getting nudged by the kicking baby, you'll be nudging me to get the crying baby. You'll be the nudger instead of the nudgee."
Her statement made Red sort of shrug his shoulders; he didn't disagree with her words but he didn't agree with them either.
"Bad move, Baby Forman," Hyde said looking down at Kitty's tummy.
"Hyde's right," agreed Eric, also looking down at the bump where the baby was. "And as your big brother, my first big brother piece of advice is this; Mom will love you unconditionally at all times of the day, Dad is the one whose love and trust you have to gain and work hard to maintain—and that is not as easy as it sounds."
Behind his paper, never looking up from it, Red grumbled, "Watch it."
"See," Eric said while pointing at his father even though he knew the baby couldn't see him.
"Is it normal for the baby to be movin' around so much?" Hyde suddenly asked, his apprehension could be seen on his face.
"Yeah, Mom." Eric could understand where Hyde was going with this and could feel his own worries start to build. "Is the baby okay?"
Kitty has to smile at the concern that the boys had for the baby inside her. She could feel the tears in her eyes building but tried to fight them off and make her smile grow a little more as she began to answer their questions.
"The baby's just fine, boys," she assured them. "It's like I said earlier, pregnancies can be very different. Laurie moved around a lot when I was pregnant with her but when I was pregnant with Eric, he hardly moved at all."
"Still doesn't." Red remarked earning him at least one smirk from Hyde.
Eric had hardly heard his father's words, his attention was still on the baby, "So why do you think the baby's moving around so much?"
"It could be for different reasons, honey, but you don't have to worry about it." Kitty said in that gentle motherly tone. "I personally think that all the movement is because this little baby is so excited to be born and meet everyone."
A happy Kitty Forman giggle filled the room, making the men smile. As Eric's smile stretched onto his lips he placed his hand back over his mother's belly.
"Yeah and we're all pretty excited to meet him or her." Eric agreed and soon after he said this, his palm felt another flutter of a happy kick.
