A/N: Hey guys, how's it going? Sorry for the delay, it's been a REALLY long time. Anyway, this chapter I'm trying a new format (I don't usually do POVs and stuff) so don't hate if it's not good. This chapter is also going to be mostly about Virginia cuz I've been paying too much attention on Hawaii and New York.
Sooooooo, here it is!
Chapter 6-
November, 1985
Virginia's POV
I sat in my chair and was extremely tempted to put my feet up. I didn't dare though, there were too many people. Originally, I didn't want to go to the state dinner, but when I heard Princess Diana would be there, how could I refuse?
Most people where standing by now and dancing. New Jersey had asked me to dance but I wasn't into it tonight. Dancing wasn't really my thing. I watched as a large group began to gather around the dance floor. I felt like investigating.
Flattening out my cotton yellow dress and pulling my long black hair to one side, I got up and walked towards the crowd. I smiled as I watched the Princess of Wales dance with John Travolta. It was all very amusing, but not to a young man in the back. He must have been a government official from England—because of his accent—but he looked too young. He had enormous eyebrows and messy blond hair.
I thought he was a bit cute, and swore I'd seen him before. Shrugging, I went over to him. "Are you not amused?" He spun his head towards me and smiled nervously. "Oh um, no it's just that I don't think that Travolta guy is good enough to dance with her, is all."
"So, why are you here?" I asked. "I work for the British government."
"That's cool, I have a friend who's pretty high up in government. That's really why I'm here. By the way, my name's Vir- Elizabeth Whitton but my friends call me Liz." I quickly added. Crap, I almost said Virginia again!
"I'm Arthur Kirkland, please to meet you." He stuck out a hand and I firmly shook it. "This place is boring, do you have to be here?" Arthur looked around and shrugged, "I suppose not, why?"
"I know some fun places around here, if you wanted to get out." Arthur smirked, "Sure, why not?" I bit my lip and grabbed his hand. We ran out of the room and down a hall passed security. "Liz, where're ya headed?" Pennsylvania asked as we ran off. "Out!"
We exited the building and were on the street. "You must be fun Arthur, leaving an important thing like that to go somewhere with a girl you hardly know."
"Well, you are very pretty, I'd be a fool if I refused." I blushed and he laughed. I brought Arthur to a small bar in downtown. It was my favorite place to go when I met someone from out of town. We walked in and everyone immediately greeted me. "Do you know all these people?" Arthur asked. "Some of them, not all. I'm sort of popular around here."
We took a seat at the bar and ordered a beer for the Brit and a Shirley Temple for me (I'm underage but still go to bars like the badass I am. Do you see New York going to bars? Probably but I go way more!).
"So Arthur, tell me about yourself." Arthur told me about living in London, about his strange family and job (well, what he could at the time without giving anything away (like I would freak out, puh-lease) (well, I probably would since I can't talk to countries other than America…) and stuff). Also his friends, but he didn't use names.
I told him about life in Virginia and the strange personalities of all my friends. I told him I was studying to become a professor at a college on American History (I really wasn't but I made it up to sound smart). Arthur was surprised how much I knew about the history of my country for a girl so young. Most girls didn't care. "I feel like I have a personal connection to history, that's why I care so much." I said, with a small smile.
"Liz, would you like to hear a joke?" Arthur said after his fifth drink. "Sure," I smiled at the Brit's face. One more drink and he would be totally drunk.
"Mark called in to see his friend Angus, a Scotsmen, to find he was stripping the wallpaper from the walls. Rather obviously, he remarked 'You're decorating, I see.' to which Angus replied 'No. I'm moving house.'" Arthur began to crack up hysterically and looked at me, "Why aren't you laughing?"
"I don't get it…" I said with a laugh. "Well that's because you're American!" Arthur laughed. Seeing him laugh made me want to laugh so then we were both laughing hysterically as I steered him out of the bar.
"You're not too drunk, right?" I asked. "No, I'm fine. Hey! Let's go to the bridge over that river."
"The Potomac?"
"Yes, that's the one."
"Okay." I hailed a cab which dropped us off a couple blocks away and we began walking. I took a side glance at Arthur's content face and smiled a little. I think I'm falling for him…
England's POV
I have no idea what I was thinking when I ran off with Liz. I guess I was thinking of what America said before about me 'not being fun'. Well, look who's fun now Alfred!
Liz shivered and I realized she must have forgotten a sweater of some kind. I took off my jacket and put it around her shoulders. "Oh, thanks Arthur. It does seem a little cold out here."
We stepped on to the bridge and walked to the top. There weren't many cars seeing as it was a little late in the night. We were the only ones. Liz looked out at the water a smiled. "I like to come here when I'm sad or I need to solve a problem." She said, "The water helps me think. My friend New- I mean, Lena, calls me crazy."
What was that she almost said? New… something. Hm, that's weird.
She yawned and leaned against me. I wasn't sure what to do. It had been ages since I went on a date with someone. I just never thought it was worth it, being a country and all.
I put my arms around her and we stayed like that, looking at the water. I slowly realized I really liked this girl. I mean, really really liked her. That was going to be a problem. I had to get out of this, push my feelings down just like last time.
It was no use. Before I knew it I was saying, "I really like you Liz." Cringing I awaited her response. She didn't say anything for a minute, then responded, "I really like you too." I smiled, I couldn't help it. This wasn't me, I was acting like that frog France! But her soft hair, playful smile, and the faint freckles made me happy.
"I've only known you for a few hours, but I think… all this time I've been falling deeper and deeper for you, Liz." She turned around and met my eyes. "Really? I've felt the same about you."
"I almost love you Elizabeth." I whispered.
"I already love you." I tilted her head up and leaned in to kiss her soft, red lips…
"HEY YOU BASTARD BRIT!" America ran over and pulled Liz away from me. "What the bloody hell Alfred!?" I yelled, my temper rising. The American looked angry, very angry. He turned to Liz and yelled, "I told you to stay away from countries!"
Liz widened her eyes and looked from me to Alfred, "He's ENGLAND?" The American nodded, "Like you didn't know! We're going home Virginia! And you can NEVER see him again!" I watched as Liz—Virginia—was dragged away by America, her friend high up in government.
Present
Virginia's POV
I sat in the back of the meeting room next to New York and Pennsylvania. I kept glancing at England but he seemed to be paying intense attention to Germany's lecture on… something.
Some of the states kept snickering at Germany's accent and I could see him getting nervous. After a while New York rolled her eyes, got up and punched every one of the snickering states in the stomach. Germany seemed to relax after that.
I tried to act like I was paying attention but it was hard. I wanted to seem smart if England looked at me. This whole time, I pretended I didn't care about the trip because I didn't want America to remember that night. I wanted to see him so badly. A couple days later, America still wouldn't let me leave his house. I kept the jacket hidden under my bed and took it out at night.
It smelled like Arthur. One night, I was already asleep and was wearing it. America came in to take the trash out and saw it. He pulled it off me and yelled at me. I cried and he burned it. I really hated him after that. America told me it was for my own good and for everyone's own good. I thought he was just being a huge dick.
Soon, the meeting was over and New York made the other states apologize to Germany. America rounded us up and said there was going to be a party in the banquet hall of our hotel. I smiled, Maybe I can see him. We could pick up where we left off.
With a huge smile, I left with the other states.
When we got back to the hotel, I ran up to my room and began pulling apart my suitcase. I never told anyone about Arthur, only America knew. So the other girls were very confused as to why I cared so much.
"I have literally nothing to wear!" I shouted. "Oh shut up, just wear the brown skirt and that flowy purple blouse." Penny suggested. "Or that Power-puff girls shirt and some jeans." NY added.
"Um, how about no." the two sighed and I gasped, pulling out a dress. I ran into the bathroom to change and came out. "Wow." Penny said, dropping her pair of boot. I looked in the mirror and was pleased.
The dress went to just above the knee. It had sleeves that hung off my shoulder and a scoop neckline. I can't remember when I bought it, but it was like a modern and more revealing version of the one I wore that night.
Putting my hair in a loose bun and sat patiently on the edge of bed for Colorado to come get us.
England's POV
All throughout the meeting, it was hard not to look at Virginia. Every time I did though, she was staring at Germany. After leaving the meeting I went back to my flat and got ready for this party.
I'm sure that America will keep a close eyes on her all night, unless he'd forgotten about that November night. I hope Virginia kept the jacket. It would make me happy if she did.
I somehow doubted it though.
When it was time to go, I drove to the hotel the states and other countries were staying at. A man from the American Secret Service led me to the party. All the countries were already there and in outfits ranging from t-shirt and jeans to full on tuxedoes (France, trying to show everyone up). The same goes for the states. It was very strange. I looked around for Virginia but couldn't find her.
"Ohonhon~ England, you finally came!" France said, making his way to me.
"What do you mean frog! The party just started!"
"Non, you are half an hour late."
"What?!" I checked my watch and compared it to France's. Mine was an hour ahead. "Are you sure you converted your watch to match London time?" I asked. France nodded. I groaned, Virginia must think I didn't want to come!
"Have you seen a girl with long black hair, blue eyes and freckles?" I asked. France thought, "Yes, I have. She was here before but left."
"Thanks so much France!" I said. I never thought I would say that without sounding sarcastic, but it did it. Racing around, I found the state that was sitting next to Virginia at the meeting.
"Hello, I'm England. Have you seen—"
"OH MY GOD. IT's you!" The girl flung her arms around my neck and squealed. "Um, hi?"
"I'm New York, It is SOOOO great to meet you!" she shook my hand wildly and stated saying how much she loved being in London and how she wanted to come all her life. I slowly backed away before she could notice.
Finding the other girl who sat with Virginia, I asked where she was. "Oh, she went back to our room. Why?"
"I was hoping I could have a word with her."
"Umm, sure!" Pennsylvania pulled out their room key, "Go on up!"
I thanked her and ran to the elevator. Once I found the room, I decided it was better not to just burst right in. I'm not Prussia. So I knocked and awaited an answer…
