Chapter 6:
Outburst
Link was out on the deck the next day near noon. The sun was at its highest point in the sky and it beat down hard on him. Link stretched and looked around for Tetra. She still wasn't on deck and probably wouldn't be until later. Zale's reasoning for keeping Tetra locked up was that she was too rebellious, which was very true.
Link sighed and turned around as he heard his name being called. It was Rocco, one of Zale's pirates that had always been in charge of steering the ship. He was an older man, but unlike the rest of the strange crew, he was always kinder to Link. Although the others did not understand why he trusted Link so much, they grew used to it.
"Link, lad. C'mere," he called.
Link nodded and walked over to the rough pirate man. "What?" he asked, finally reaching the pirate.
"Zale was telling me how you were lookin' through me old belongins' last night."
"Oh… ya, well… I was just-"
"Quit yer yappin' boy. I don't mind 'bout that a bit. Just what exactly were ya lookin' at?" he asked with a hearty laugh.
Link smiled. "It was an old picture I found. It was two young girls in a large grassy area."
"Ah, that one. That's not very old. Eventually you will know what that picture truly is, but now, ye'll have ta wait. Now go on and get, boy. That's all I needed to know."
Link continued to smile as Rocco went back to steering the ship. Link walked back over to the ships edge and leaned forward. He looked out to the sea that seemed unfamiliar to him.
Link began thinking about the small picture. The picture of the two young girls was etched into his mind as well as the green landscape. Oh, Goddesses, why didn't that come to mind before? Link thought to himself. Only once had Link seen that much grass in one place apart from the forests, and it was at the sunken Hyrule. But these pirates seemed to know nothing of Hyrule, but they did know of Tetra being Zelda.
Many thoughts stirred in Link's head. Finally, giving in to all the questions that swarmed in is mind; he turned around and ran to Rocco's side. "Rocco?" he asked.
"What is it swabbie?"
"Where was that picture taken? I have only seen that much grass one time before."
Rocco looked at Link and frowned. "Link, did ya listen to a word I just said?"
"Well, yes, but-"
"Then shuddup, boy. And no, it is not where the wee princess is from." He laughed seeing Link's expression. "Don't go all freaky boy, only I know 'bout that Golden Land."
Link nodded and slowly walked back to where he previously stood. Rocco still hadn't cleared things up for him; instead, he made things worse. Link jumped as he heard his name being called again.
Turning around, he saw Zale. She had a smile plastered on her face as she jumped from the… crows nest? Link's eyes widened in surprise and he thought to himself, Goddesses, what is with that girl? Zale jumped down and her hair was streaking wildly above her as she fell to the wooden deck. She landed with a thump and walked over. "Hiya."
"Doesn't that hurt?" he asked.
"What? Jumping like that? Heh, no. I have felt worse things than that. Anyway, watcha doin'?" she asked like a young girl who was wanting something as she swayed back and forth.
"Um, standing… Why, what do you want?" Link asked, his attitude changing suddenly.
Zale frowned and put her hands on her hips. "Wow, you're not very conversational today."
"When have I ever been conversational with you? You who put me and Tetra on this damn pirate ship!" he said. A slight smile grew on his lips as he realized he sounded like Tetra just then.
Zale frowned and said back, "Room. Now." She pointed a finger in the way of his small cabin like room.
"Why?" Link asked, beginning to sound more like Tetra.
Zale was growing angry. Doesn't this boy know better than to question me?! "Because I said so!"
"Eh, I'm not up for it now."
"What!" Zale's screech sounded throughout the ship and made her crew wince.
"It's not like you could do anything to stop me. I can throw you overboard right now if I wanted."
"My crew would get you!" she cried, her voice growing louder and louder with every word.
"Not if I followed you in and drowned you," Link replied calmly. He was enjoying himself too much to stop pestering her.
"Then you'd be dead as well."
"So. As long as you're dead."
Zale stared blankly and bit her bottom lip. She scrunched up her nose and choked on what she said next, "G-go. To. Your. Cabin. NOW!"
Link grinned and nodded, beginning to grow tired of the game. "Fine, fine. See? I am going," he said walking to the small room.
He opened the small door then plopped down onto the bed and laughed. It was fun messing with Zale. She gave in so easily, much unlike Tetra. But what bothered him was why didn't she ask her crew for backup? Then again, she seemed like the kind of girl that was very independent. Link gave a final laugh then entered a whole other world filled with daydreams.
"Miss?" Val asked as he approached his captain who was still standing still. "Are you okay?" He reached forward with his hand and a stinging sensation filled it. Val looked curiously at it to see it red. "Miss! Why'd ya do that?"
Zale looked at him angrily and growled, "Get back to work."
The pirate nodded out of fear and ran off. Murdo was exchanging confused glances with Kirore who was staring wide eyed. "Gee, she's mad," he said along with a long, clear whistle.
"No really?" Tobrian asked sarcastically.
Zale stormed to her room, ignoring everything her crew was saying, and slammed the door behind her. "Dammit," she hissed. She threw up a pillow and whipped her leg around to kick it, sending it flying into the wall and feathers everywhere. "Gah!" she cried out.
Zale jumped onto her bed and buried her face into another pillow. This was why she had no one. Not even a family. She sat up suddenly and glared at the wall. Family… she thought. It's useless and meaningless. That is why I am a pirate.
She breathed in deeply then out again. Zale fell back down onto her pillow and dark memories filled her mind of her childhood. Violently shaking her head as though her memories would vanish into nothing, she felt a teardrop run down her face. Never, never, never would she want to think of her family. Never ever.
