..Unknown Existence..

Chapter 7

*..*..*..*..*

Usui wondered: What kind of life did Misaki live? To be separated from her family, to die time and time again, and then be dumped in a forest by herself for years…

He didn't fully comprehend what happened to her yet. He didn't understand how she was killed many times and remained alive.

All he knew is she was wrenched out of her world, and abandoned in a cage where no one dares to near her., sentenced to eternal loneliness.

She was left in a place where only coldness would embrace her, where everyone can hurt her just by being afraid of her existence, despising it, praying that she would vanish, wishing that she never exists.

Usui didn't know why it all happened. He didn't know what she did to face such a torment, he didn't know why they were torturing her.

A human, a ghost, or even an alien, no creature deserves such an agony.

Pain, grief, and wrath are what Usui feels when he remembers all what happened to her. He can't forget. He can't suppress those feelings. Even if she doesn't remember anything, those feelings are invading him.

He wanted to punish whoever hurt her this tolerable way. He wanted to know who was behind it. He didn't know where he stands as a human, but he knew he stands at the right side, the side both of his heart and mind consent to.

He couldn't forgive whoever laid his hands on her. Their sin isn't forgivable. He wanted to terminate her suffering.

She must have felt terrible when she met any human, and lived with that feeling. The tears he saw when he first found out she's a ghost… he must have hurt her too. He's no difference from everyone. His fear hurt her…

If only he could dispel her pain. If only he could make her taste the happiness. If only he could avenge her!

But what does 'If' do?

Nothing, he can do nothing but be besides her. Even that, he doubted it would make her happy.

Being by her side, does he want to do that for her, or for his self?

The only answer that occurs to him: both.

His heart goes crazy when he's not with her, and goes crazier when he's with her.

He yearns for her. He wants to see her, touch her. She warms his heart in an abnormal way.

Safe, is what Usui feels besides her although he's the one who's supposed to give her safety.

Whenever he daydreams, he catches his self thinking of her.

He thinks of her a lot to the extent he can't specify when he doesn't think of her.

Usui averted his eyes from the blue, clear sky, and looked at her beautiful eyes.

Misaki looked at him. His legs automatically stood, and he smiled; she came.

The feeling Usui didn't know how to name it, was tickling his heart.

Suddenly, she started shedding tears. Usui frowned; Why? Why is she crying?

"You're fine! Why didn't you come sooner? I thought you died! "Her tears streamed down her face as she talked. Usui's heart warmed up in an instance; she was worried about him.

He was supposed to feel bad for causing her worry. He is feeling sorry for that, but why did he feel happy? Is it relief? Is it because she cares about him to the extent of crying for him?

She wiped her tears quickly and asked:"Are you hurting anywhere? What was wrong? What happened to you?"She rained him with questions that warmed him further.

"I'm fine. I'm sorry for worrying you" Usui replied her questions by a one line, and it was enough to send relief across her face.

Misaki smiled. Usui didn't think his heart could become any warmer, but her smile made his heart dwell further in warmth. Yes, she cares about him, and he's glad she's relieved now.

"It feels nice!" Usui said, breathing deeply as breeze blew by them. He never felt so refreshed by a little breeze like this to this extent before. Misaki's existence really changes everything.

"Y…yes" She said serenely, making Usui curious; what kind of facial expression did she have? He looked at her. She was closing her eyes to relish the moment. Her beauty and pureness overwhelmed him instead. He didn't care about the gentle wind anymore.

Misaki opened her eyes, sensing Usui's gaze on her.

She blushed deeply, making Usui smile; she is cute.

No matter how Usui looked at her, she's a human to him. A ghost or not, she's someone he fell for, someone that definitely deserves to be loved.

"What is this voice?" Misaki asked, wondering where such a happy, heart warming melody came from. She looked at the source of the voice, and smiled. It was one of the gleaming devices that the humans use; cell phones.

She looked at the cell phone Usui held, admiringly; she always wanted to have one of these devices.

She always had the chance to steal one since not many people could see her, but she knew stealing is wrong, and would sadden the owners.

As if Usui could read Misaki's mind, he handed her his Cell phone. Misaki held it, smiling wider than before. Her head started swaying slowly in harmony with the melody. She forgot that Usui existed.

"Misaki, I want you to sing this song. A happy melody" Usui said, observing as her motion came to a halt. She got flustered.

At a loss for words, she said stubbornly: "Like I'll ever do!" She folded her arms across her chest.

Usui was amused by her response.

"How about I get you a cell phone so we can call ea…?" Usui was interrupted by her sudden shout. She fell on the ground.

He rushed to her side, asking what was wrong. Misaki looked at the cell phone, shivering slightly.

"It... It came to life!" She stuttered, perplexed.

Usui took his smart phone and looked at the screen of it, and then he snickered. He looked at her puzzled face and couldn't hold his laugh anymore. He breathed deeply in a try to stop laughing. Breathing didn't do the trick; he started laughing again

"W… what is it?" She asked, greatly embarrassed.

"It's just Ichiro calling, the phone didn't come to life. It is on vibrating mode. It was just vibrating" He explained, wiping his tears; he laughed to tears.

The heat that reached her cheeks was too much for her, she felt like shouting her embarrassment out.

"Shouldn't you answer that? Humans answer, right?" She said, averting her eyes.

"I'll call him back later. You are too cute to be real" He commented, the wide smile was fixed on his face.

"Well, I'm a ghost" She stated, pouting, and then walked towards the trees. Not so fast; she didn't want to be away from him. She just couldn't look at him in the eye with all of her embarrassment.

"Where are you going?" Usui asked as he followed her. She disappeared from his sight, making him frown. He reflected on his actions, did he go too far?

Usui spun round in an attempt to find her. Suddenly, a large stack of leafs collapsed onto him, making him stop dead.

After the leaves stopped cascading over him, he looked at the sky, wondering if it started raining leafs, but the sky was clear.

Usui heard a chuckle. He looked at the source of the chuckling voice and saw Misaki laughing.

To answer his puzzled look, she moved her hand in the air, and leafs moved, following her hand's motion by some sort of a power.

"Now that's the best dazed face I've ever seen" She had a victory smirk. "Follow me!" She instructed, and he obeyed.

They stopped in front of an enormous rock.

"Why did you stop? Keep walking"

Usui looked at her, wondering what she meant. The questioning look he had made her remember; "Ah, right, humans can't see, nor pass into this place"

Misaki thought it over, and then decided to try something.

Misaki held Usui's hand, embarrassed. She tried to walk into the rock, literally into the rock.

She entered it and looked back at Usui. It was a success! Their connection permitted his passage through the rock!

'Connection? So it wasn't a dream! We could really touch!' She released his hand, smiling at the thought of the bond between them.

Usui was thinking of the same thing; the fact of their connection, ignoring the slight pain he felt.

For a second, Usui forgot everything; he was dazed; he just entered a rock, and inside it, was a whole new world.

A big land, blanketed in flowers, some flowers' petals were gleaming, as if there were emitting light. There was a waterfall and a steam located beneath it. The sky was clearer than the one on the other side of the rock. If Usui's mind wasn't playing tricks on him, he could see the stars mid-day. Were they on the same planet?

A big amount of water was splashed all over him, making him gasp and blink twice; the water was extremely cold, unlike the other side of the rock.

"Wake up. It's not a dream" Misaki said, overflowing with happiness.

Usui filled his palms with water and splashed her back.

Yes, it isn't a dream.

Being splashed by the cold water, Misaki fished Usui's smart phone out of his pocket. Usui observed as his smart phone moved in the air on its own and landed on the safely on the ground.

Misaki blew the air towards Usui, causing his fall into the river; she saw a human freaking out about his cell phone when it fell into a pond, so she figured water would mess it up.

Usui utterly froze due to the coldness of water..

Misaki leapt into the water in order to finish off her revenge by splashing water fiercely. Usui ended up doing the same. As much as such scenes in TV dramas were absurd to him, he was enjoying it to the utmost limit.

Love really changes everything.

Shivering and trembling, Usui got out of the water. The air hit him mercilessly.

"W… We'll catch c…cold" Usui stuttered.

"What's cold?" Misaki asked, innocently.

"Okay, I'll re-phrase that. I'll catch cold" He figured since she didn't know what cold is, maybe ghosts don't go down with illness.

" It's an illness I might catch if I stayed in these wet cloth and cold air"

Usui's words triggered the memory of Usui squirming on the ground with pain. Worried, she said:" The other side is warmer"

She held his hand and drew him towards the other side of the rock.

Pain pulsed through his chest once more. Upon their passage, she released his hand, and the pain started to fade.

"Did you already catch cold? Shall I transfer you to the city so you would change into dry cloth?" She asked, anxious about his health as she observed his uneasy face.

'Transfer me? Is that how I suddenly reached the city last time?' He thought.

"No, I'll be fine if I took off this shirt" He took off his white shirt and wrung the water from it, and then he hung it on a branch of a tree. Misaki just sat observing the process.

She blushed at the sight of his topless body. She didn't know why. It wasn't the first time she sees a human body, so she wondered why she felt awkward when she saw his.

" How about joining me the next time I go to the city?" Usui suggested while sitting besides her.

"I'm locked up. I can't leave this forest." She answered glumly. She wanted to accompany him and know everything about his life. She wanted to know what the city feels like, but she couldn't escape from her cage.

"I entered a rock, and it's not something a human can do. Maybe if I held your hand, you can leave this place" Usui suggested; the idea is worth a try.

She smiled excitedly, wondering if that would work.

"Let's try as soon as your shirt dries! Heat will make it dry faster, right?" She said as she patted on the ground three times, and then she knitted her eyebrows, confused.

After another pat, a fire was started. She brought the white shirt and hung it close to the fire.

"You're amazing" Usui commented.

She seemed a bit baffled, and then said:"the fire normally starts upon the first pat. Even the leafs earlier, I could control a larger pile of leafs before, but I couldn't. My power is weakened"

"Maybe you are just tired. It's almost the sunset" Usui reasoned.

"What's tired?"

Usui sighed; there are numerous differences between them. He lied down on the ground and checked his smart phone.

Thirty five missed calls? What was going on?! He sat up hastily; confusion appeared on his face. He tapped on the numbers quickly in order to call Ichiro.

Ichiro answered as soon as the rings started.

'Takumi, are you alright?' Ichiro's asked frantically.

'What's the matter?' Usui asked, his heart skipped a beat; something felt wrong.

'Takumi. Nothing is wrong with me. You are the one in danger. Stay away from…" Ichiro rattled through his answer. It was hard to make out what he said. Before Ichiro could finish his words, the line went dead.

"What's wrong?"

"nothing" Usui answered her, smiling.

He tried to call again, but no signal existed. He checked the time. The last bus heading off towards the city would arrive soon.

It was a relief to know that Ichiro was fine, but he still needed to know the cause of the thirty five calls. He took the slightly damp T-shirt and wore it.

"I'm returning to the city. Let's meet here tomorrow." Usui said, smiling at her. On a second thought, he said:"Come with me"

And so, they made their way towards the exit of the forest.
