'This can't be real!' heavy beating of a heart that had gone unfeeling for so many centuries, pounded painfully against her chest. She was dead, but her heart still beat. No, there was no logic to her predicament. A broken cry came from the orphanage before her as she hovered before it. Wools Orphanage was the birthplace of the young Tom Marvolo Riddle. Only a baby, but evil shrouded his soul, the soul that had taken her life, and those of her friends. The finishing blow...how had he died...she couldn't recall how Naraku had died, or for that matter, how she'd died.
"It's a shame, she'll not be able to see her son grow."
The she that the Orphanage matron spoke of, was none other than Merope Riddle, née Gaunt. The very woman whose soul she'd taken the night before. Kagome had stayed behind and watched the child, intent on killing it, but unable to raise her hand to do so. The word child seemed to be floating her mind. She couldn't bring herself to kill a child that was, for all purposes, innocent.
"Kagome...let my warning reach your ears. Let live this child, for your future depends on it."
"...my future? Midoriko...what do you speak? Is it not enough that he's caused turmoil once? Why must it be so again? Was not once enough!?"
"Calm yourself, I assure, all will make sense...in due time."
Those words, in due time. How much more time, would she be tied to this world. Would it not be easier to just die? "When will the Kami's let free my soul..."
"...in due time..."

Her days had changed from simple soul collecting. In her free time, what little she had, she spent it shadowing Riddle. Becoming more fascinated and overwhelmed by the darkened soul that resided within the growing boy. He was now ten years old, and he was...already so strong.
"Tom, we will be leaving for the Sea shortly, are you ready?"
"Let's leave him!"
Kagome knew this voice to belong to a young orphan by the name of Dennis Bishop, who was slightly older than Tom. He was a brat to be sure. As time had passed, she wasn't surprised by any of the evil that found its way past his fingertips. The magic he played with. The other language he spoke that controlled his venomous friends around him. She found herself becoming...sympathetic, to the boy's misdeeds. It wasn't like he was killing anyone, just scaring them. The kids that were cruel to him, made fun of him, beat him...or, tried to. Starting to wonder if perhaps she was losing her mind, Kagome turned from the three. Her ears listening to the scolding of Miss. Cole as she held Tom's hand and walked out to where the others were. Another strange occurrence had taken place a few times. She'd noticed while she was alone with her, he'd ask questions. She never answered...maybe she should. She would listen as he spoke, but she always remained silent. A pull called out to her and she vanished from where she'd hovered.
The pull was for some petty theft who lost his life at gunpoint. A "muggle". She'd started to acknowledge terms like this, taking in the knowledge of the different worlds.
"...what happened?"
The soul was wandering near its body, the man who'd shot him was digging around in his pockets as the soul watched. "You are dead...come, take my hand..." Kagome lifted her hand to the soul as he turned towards her.
"No...I don't want to go yet."
It was a painful throb, the feeling the emanated from the soul. He was scared enough as it was, but without knowing what happened, he didn't want to believe it. "Come...there is no place left for you here."
"My sister..."
"...your sister?"
"I can't leave my sister. I wouldn't have done this if not for her. She's...she's sick...she'll die if I don't..."
His voice was breaking, and Kagome found herself thinking of her brother. It would be another fifty something years before he was even born, even her mother hadn't yet been born. "I understand your worry, but there's nothing more that you can do for her."
"Can I see her one last time?"
A request she could grant; she waved her hand for him to go and followed him to what barely passed as a home. It was in shambles, dark and cold. In the corner of the room, a small girl lay sleeping. Her energy was barely there, it wouldn't be long until Kagome returned for the girl, unless a miracle happened...maybe...
"...Anna...I'm sorry, I couldn't help you in the end. Will we meet again?"
"I'm sure, you both will meet again...another life." She placed her hand on the soul's shoulder and he glanced at his sister one last time before fading, his light merging with the orb that dangled vibrantly around Kagome's neck. As she claimed his soul, a heavy knock on the door sounded, she listened to the yelling of what appeared to be a landlord. Another few raps and finally the door was forced open. "...is this how you die?" She wondered. Her energy mapped out the room and she watched an elder man walk to the corner where the dying girl lay asleep and week.
"Hey...hey kid! Where's that brother of yours?" He shook her a bit, but she didn't respond.
"Grandad, what's going on?"
Another voice, from the doorway, this one a young boy. For a moment, it was quiet, and then...
"Let's take her to the town's doctor, come my boy."
If they could have, her eyes would have widened in shock. Kagome listened to the hurried steps of the old man and young boy as they took the small girl from her death. "Kami sure has a twisted way of getting things done. Had he lived...she would have died. Truly, such is the cruelty of fate. Ah..." she smiled, "I should return...who knows what Tom is up to." She couldn't even distinguish the change in her. She hadn't noticed how little morality had started to matter to her. More so than when she started, Kagome Higurashi, had started to become blind to the lost souls around her. She was drowning...and she didn't even know...
