Asami noticed Korra sitting outside the dance hall, staring out into the distance. After excusing herself from a rather awkward conversation with Prince Wu, she made her way across the busy dance floor, apologizing when she bumped into dancing couples.
Korra didn't hear her approach and jumped when Asami plopped down next to her. Offering a soft smile, Korra asked if Asami was enjoying the party. Asami nodded with matching smile. "Are you?" she asked, and it was barely more than a whisper.
"I guess," Korra averted her eyes. "It's just that…everything's going to change now, isn't it? Now that the world's back in balance…what am I supposed to do, you know?"
"Hey, don't talk like that," Asami snapped. "The world will always need the Avatar. Just because it's in balance now doesn't mean it always will be. I remember a man I worked with once-he moved on to be a very successful scientist-told me that the world operates in a specific way. It can't always be great or horrible, it'll have to move back to the middle at some point. Do you get what I'm saying?"
"Kinda," the brunette replied with a nervous laugh. "Not really. Actually, not at all. But I'm grateful you're here trying to cheer me up."
"Well, you're not gonna cheer up by sitting here all by yourself," Asami joked, grabbing Korra's hand and pulling her to her feet. "Let's go tear up that dance floor."
Korra let out a surprised laugh, following after the black haired beauty. Asami took care looking around for the best spot for them to dance. Noticing a gap in the dancing crowd, she led Korra over and released her hand, turning to face her.
They stood quietly for a moment, staring at each other. Korra tucked a strand behind her ear, averting her gaze momentarily. "What if someone…ah…" she began nervously.
Asami shushed her, placing her hands on the Avatar's waist. "Just follow my lead," she hummed. "Put your hands on my shoulders." She did as she was told. Asami smiled. "Good. Now step your left foot forward a little. Now step your right foot back a little. Good. Just keep doing that."
A minute later, the song ended, and another on quickly took its place. Asami stood dumbstruck before letting out a laugh. "I have no idea how to dance to this song!" she explained after seeing Korra's confused look.
Korra gave a wide grin, punching the girl's shoulder gently. "Lucky for you, I do," she informed Asami and continued to explain after receiving a disbelieving look from the girl. "It's a traditional Fire Nation song that Fire Lord Zuko resurrected. Kalika had to teach me when I went to a Fire Nation feast. It's called the Dancing Dragon. Just follow my lead, Asami."
… … …
The two girls erupted into laughter as they performed the last step of the song. Another song began to play; its rhythm was more like the first song they danced to. Asami reached for her partner's waist, but Korra raised a hand, stopping her. "You trained me well, Asami," Korra announced jokingly. "Now it's time to show my teacher what I learned."
Asami grinned as Korra took hold of her waist. She threw her arms around the brunette's neck, pulling her closer. Resting her chin on Korra's shoulder, Korra had to readjust her grip on Asami, moving her hands to her lower back. "Are you having fun?" Asami asked, whispering in her ear.
"I am," Korra smirked, letting out a soft chuckle. After a few moments of silence, she said "Asami?"
"Yeah?"
"Thank you."
There you go.
