Recap...
"Fine tell me then." I said, leaning back against the chair. I was nervous. What if what he told wasn't good information, but bad? What if I ended up hating everyone for it? But it was the truth. And the truth always comes out sooner or later. I saw Jonathan shift as he leaned forward and rested his arms on his knees. His hands were folded, and his face was serious. His eyes were again the same black and empty filled eyes. Then he opened his mouth. And closed it. I could see he was nervous. His demeanour was very unsettling. It started to make me uncomfortable. Then I started wondering if I should just say no to his offer. I frowned, unhappy with myself for being so indecisive.
Jonathan looked at me again, this time keeping the eye contact. Then he spoke.
"Jace is your brother." He said gravely.
Trust
"W-What?!" I cry out, forgetting that I'm in a quiet casual coffee shop. I look around, and see that some people are staring at me. I quickly grab my coat and stand up, heading for the door, knowing Jonathan will follow me. I walk stiffly and hastily, pushing the door open and hear the bell ringing as I exit. The fresh cool wind that meets me, calms me down slightly. I hear the bell ring again, a sign that Jonathan was now behind me. I turn back around.
"What?!" I say again, my voice incredulous. He stands with his hands in his pockets, casual leaning against the wall of Java Jones.
"Did you notice, that he pushed you away at the party? He knows there's something wrong with you and him being together." He replies coolly.
"T-That could mean anything! How do I know you're not just lying to me?" I ask, suddenly suspicious. I see his eyebrows furrow.
"And what would I get out of that?" He says quietly. He's right. He gets nothing out of this, so he doesn't have any reason to lie. I find myself looking at my feet, my cheeks are burning.
"His real name is Jonathan." He continues, acknowledging my silence as an agreement, "But your mom gave him away because she found out what Valentine did to Jonathan. He injected him with demon blood. A mother shouldn't give her child away. It's wrong." He spits out the last words with such fierceness that I start to think that he is capable of compassion. There is silence for some time. Then he nods and pulls my phone out of my pocket, throwing it over his shoulder as he walks away. Quickly I fumble around with my phone, calling my mom.
"Mom?"
"Clary! I need to talk you, I'm-"
"Do I have a brother?"
There is silence for some time.
"Answer the question mom"
More silence.
"Why don't you come home honey, we can talk about this then"
"Jonathan is my brother, right?" I no longer want to call Jace by his nickname, he seems foreign to me now.
It seems that my mom likes silence.
"Yes."
I end the call, not wanting to hear anymore. My mind is racing, my heart is feeling like it will break in two. It's wrong to have feeling for Jonathan. For my brother. That name sounds foul in mouth, like it doesn't belong there. There is still something not quite right about this. Some holes are missing. I just don't know what. First now I realise that I have been wandering around without any destination in mind. I look up, it's a dead end. I'm in an alley. A dark one at that. I turn around to walk back but catch a glimpse of a shadow.
I walk out of the alley, half expecting someone to pounce on me. But nobody does. So I keep walking, a little faster now. Discreetly I look out of the corner of my eye, and spot movement behind me. All I saw was a black mass. I am starting to get paranoid, so I half run half walk now. I see my stalker has picked up his pace too. I break out into a run. There's no point in hiding myself now. I sprint around the corner, no longer sure where I am, and slip into a small corner between to buildings. I see the masked black mysterious man run right past me, and I let out a sigh.
"Are you trying to hide from me?" A quiet voice whispers in my ear behind me. Immediately I stiffen. I don't dare turn my head, but I can tell from the voice that I don't know him. I get pushed further into the small corner, where I now realise is another alley. My heart is racing, and my breath is uneven.
"W-Who sent you?" I meant for it to be strong and firm, but it came out barely audible. Though it seems he heard me.
"Don't tell her." Another manly voice, a little breathless, I observe. I turn around, no longer feeling someone close to me. It's the man from before, he still has his dark clothes on. His face is masked, so I can't see it. I see his long overcoat is made of leather, with black pants and black business shoes. The other wears the same.
"She's gonna die anyway. And I want a little fun" The other adds, looking at me with greediness. They both snicker and turn their heads towards me. My insides crawl with unsettling fear as I realise that I'm going to die.
They advance upon me cornering me. I stand up, putting my fists up. I wasn't going down without a fight. I start forward, lunging my fist at his jaw. He staggers back, looking surprised. His hand goes up to his face, massaging his jaw.
"She can fight." The other one smirks at lunges towards me, swinging his fist into my stomach. I gasp, feeling all the air leave my stomache. I am flung back into the wall. I stand back up and manage to duck as he swings another fist, this time at my face. It swings by, missing my face by an inch. I feel the air from the hit. The other man grabs my hair and pulls me back against the wall. They take the chance to pound fist after fist into my face, stomach, ribs. I feel like I'm burning. How did I end up here. My lungs are burning for air, and I sink back against the wall. Everything hurts. I feel blood running down from my nose. I am lying with my back against the wall. I close my eyes, as I see a foot swinging in towards my side. Someone lifts my hair.
"Jonathan sent us" He whispers, his cold icy voice sending chills down my spine. I cry out as another kick hits my face, tears running down my cheeks. I start to see black cornering my vision, staining it black. The black is spreading everywhere, and I feel my head lull. Suddenly the kicks and hits stop, but I still feel the pain throb everywhere. I try to move, but I can't do much. Pain is coursing through me like water flowing in a river. I bite my lip to keep from crying.
I hear shouts and cries, soon followed by two thumps. My vision is incredibly blurry, as I see a shadow in front of me. I wince and crawl further back into the wall, waiting for another kick at my sides. Instead, I feel a gentle hand on my cheek. My mind isn't thinking anything. It's completely black. I open my eyes to slits and try with all my might to focus on the person in front of me.
"Jace..." I choke out as I feel arms enveloping me. I feel the air swaying into my hair and body. The gentle rocking back and forth makes me think I'm being carried. I bury my head into his shirt, and breath his scent in. I had associated his scent as safe, I realise as I feel my limbs relax. The pain is still far too great. The blackness is ebbing into my vision again, and this time I let it envelope me.
