Chill

The chill radiating from Kensi did nothing to deter the oppressive heat in Northern Mexico. Deeks and Kensi were in a local bar waiting to Callen to secure the Hetti's contact.

"You're not saying much," Deeks ventured, the silence between them broadening since he boarded the plane in L.A.

"What is there to say, Deeks?" she replied, pinning him with a sad stare.

"That you're not giving up on us."

Her stare intensified and her eyes narrowed. She leaned into him over the small table. "Are you kidding me, right now?"

He leaned in as well. "No. You changed the plan and you did it on a dime. You were so excited that we bought a bar. You led me to believe we were getting out."

"You know what this is to me, Deeks," she whispered, curtly. "This is my life. Our life."

"What's changed, Kens?" he asked pointedly. "Is this about Mosely. Is it about what you think you might have to do if we have kids? That you would act just like she is?"

"This isn't the place for this conversation," she answered. "Our attention should be on the mission."

"I'm a good multi-tasker," he retorted. "I can understand not wanting to leave the job. It's not what we talked about, but I get it. I can even live with it. But, the kids thing is new. Something has changed and I need you to tell the truth, Kensi. Is this Mosely or something else?"

Kensi flexed her jaw in frustration. "I'm not talking about this. We are not in a position to have this out. You need to get it together. While we are here, I suggest you get your head in the game."

Deeks broke eye contact and lowered his head. He shook it minutely. He raised it again. "I know I was wrong last night. I shouldn't have brought all that stuff up. Especially when the situation was so chaotic and happening so fast. But, I saw you change, you hardened in that parking lot, like you were pulling away. Are you pulling away?"

"I'm not the one pulling away," she hissed. "You pulled away. You dropped bombs when neither of us had time to diffuse them."

Deeks' face shaded pink and his mouth was a hard line. "Wow. Listen to me, Kensi. I know you're hurt, but we are stronger than this. We can work it out. We will work it out."

"I don't know, Deeks," she sighed. "Maybe this is the wave that take us under."

"That is not true," he declared. "I won't let."

He looked up to see Callen come through the door of the bar. He didn't look happy, but he didn't disappointed either.
