Chapter 7:
Trey's jaw dropped. I looked at Sky again, our eyes meeting once more. In her eyes I saw pain, the same pain of loss that Trey and I felt.
She blushed and looked away quickly, puzzling me more. What is it about her that I find perplexing? I thought, my eyes still on her.
"Cole?" Trey's voice cut across my thoughts. I turned to look at him, and he continued. "I think we have enough supplies. Let's go home." I nodded, motioning for Sky and Erick to follow.
We weaved through the now darkening forest, being careful to avoid mobs. For Sky's sake, we tried even harder to avoid Spiders. When the lights of the village came into view, I smiled. I've missed this sight, I thought to myself.
We led our guests through the village and to our home, setting up guest beds for them to stay in. Once everyone was settled, we ate some dinner and chatted for a while, then went to bed. I snuggled into my bed and drifted off into a peaceful slumber.
~5 A.M.~
I awoke to a bone-chilling scream, and was immediately on my feet, sword in hand. After making sure that everyone in the house was alright, I went to the door. There were Zombies and Skeletons running rampant in the streets.
Another scream rang out. Turning towards it, I noticed a mother running away from two Zombies, her baby held close. Rushing in to help, I quickly stabbed the Zombies, turning them to dust before they knew what had happened.
"Thank you, brave young man," the woman thanked me, before running into a nearby house.
Is this what Trey meant when he said there were more attacks? I thought, walking back to the house with my weapon drawn. Making sure our fence and door were closed, I tiredly trudged back to my bed, falling asleep once more.
~Morning~
I woke with a start after the nightmare that I had just endured. I remembered it with a shudder.
I ran down the street, my little 5 year old legs carrying me as fast as they could. I could hear the moans of the Zombies and the rattling bones of the Skeletons as they chased me through the small forest outside of the village. As I thought they were getting closer, terror overtook me and I began to run faster.
I screamed.
I had tripped on a branch, and now the mobs were looking down at me as I cowered in fear under them.
I listened to the sounds around me, the sounds of the night, the sounds of the my attackers, the sound of my heart beating more rapidly than it ever had before. In the distance I could hear mobs walking around. I swallowed hard, wondering what to do. The Zombie and the Skeleton were staring down at me, and I could have swore that they were smirking.
With a swift motion, the Skeleton prepared its bow, aiming right at me, bones rattling with the motion. It pulled back, and I closed my eyes, expecting the end.
But nothing happened.
I opened my eyes.
And there he was.
My dad.
The house smelled of bacon cooking in the furnace. Looking around, everyone else had already gotten up.
Groggily walking into the kitchen, I was greeted by Trey, who was cooking the bacon. "Good morning, rough sleep?" he asked. I shook my head no and told him what had happened in the middle of the night. When I had finished, he smiled at me. "That was a good thing you did Cole. You should be proud."
I smiled back. "Thanks pal," I said, patting his shoulder. "Where are the others?" I asked, noticing that we were alone.
"They went to get more food," Trey answered, focused on his bacon again. "They should be back soon."
I nodded, suddenly concerned for Sky. What if they encounter a Spider? Nonsense, I thought, quickly dismissing the thought. They'll be fine.
The door opened and I spun around, weapon in hand, scaring Sky and Erick. I re-sheathed my weapon, apologizing for scaring them. "It's ok," Sky said with a smile.
Our eyes met yet again. Why do our eyes keep locking? I thought, gazing into her deep blue eyes. We both blushed and looked quickly away. Erick, who had been watching, simply chuckled then handed his food to Trey.
I tried to start a conversation. "So, uh, how was hunting?" I asked lamely, glancing at Sky.
She smiled shyly at me. "It was good, no troubles really. We got a decent amount of meat so we should be good for a little while," she explained.
I smiled at her gratefully. "Thank you for hunting for us," I answered, my voice almost a whisper.
She smiled back. "Thank you for saving me yesterday," she replied, blushing a little.
Erick chuckled again, and I was about to say something to him when Trey interrupted, exclaiming, "Breakfast is done!"
Five minutes later we were all seated at the table munching happily on our bacon. We idly chatted, talking about ourselves, until conversation turned to my trip. Slowly, I recounted my adventures from the past year.
