Love at First Sight Chapter 7
Later that day Barty hadn't seen Evie all day and was beginning to worry.
"Have you seen Evie?" he asked Riley as he entered the common room.
"Not since her and Riddle walked out of potions this morning," Riley replied, suddenly feeling worried himself and as if on cue she walked into the common room with Tom.
"Evie, I told Maxine that I'm going to Hogsmeade with you and she understands," Barty told his little sister.
"Sorry, I've changed my mind I'm going with Tom," she replied bluntly and Barty raised an eyebrow.
"What happened to wanting to spend time with your big brother?" Barty asked, crossing his arms across his chest.
"I need to catch up with Tom," still blunt with an emotionless look on her face, the two sat together in front of the fire whilst Riley and Barty looked at them oddly. Benny came over and told Evie about everything he's done since the beginning of term and that his favourite subject is Defence Against the Dark Arts and Tom didn't like that one bit so when Evie noticed his scowl she sent Benny over to his friends.
"Why are you getting annoyed? He's only eleven."
"I don't see why enjoys that subject so much," Tom sneered. "I'll teach him what subjects to like."
"You stay away from him! You won't know what's hit you if you plant one of your sick ideas into his head," Evie said in the evil tone she had learned from Tom.
"I am rubbing off on you, you sound more like me every day," Tom explained with an evil smirk on his face, Evie was hurt by the comment and felt hot tears of anger fill her eyes.
"I'm going for a walk and you will not follow me," Evie said into his ear with a no nonsense tone. Tom frowned and Evie went to the Astronomy Tower to think and much to her dismay Dylan was there.
Hey you ok?" he asked concerned about the look on her face.
"Not really, I had to get back with Tom and I can't speak to Riley or Barty," Evie revealed subconsciously. "I shouldn't have said that," Dylan gave her a funny look, the complete opposite of her grave look.
October came and everyone was sat at breakfast in the Great Hall.
"I need to get Barty something for his birthday," Evie mused, it was only two days until his birthday but Tom refused to let her do it; reciting 'he will complicate things between us'. "There is nothing between us so you don't need to worry about him complicating things," she whispered in his ear in a mocking tone. He smirked and put a hand on her knee underneath the table. "I swear to God if you lay one hand on me ever again, I'll chop them off," she whispered sadistically and he took his hand away knowing he had met his match. A few weeks later Evie had been out to meet with Dylan and not told Tom. So he was waiting for her in the common room when she arrived back.
"Where have you been?" he demanded.
"Walking about the castle, problem?" she replied, her attitude getting worse and her voice getting louder.
"Don't take that tone with me!" Tom demanded, he grabbed her wrists and pulled her towards him. "You don't know who you're up against here," he whispered in a cruel and cold tone.
"Oh yes I do Tom," she replied also in a whisper equally as cold and cruel as his; she pulled out of his grip and walked to her dorm, Tom followed but didn't manage to grab her before she disappeared. Tom cursed under his breath and Riley who had observed the exchange approached one of the girls in the common room.
"Hey could you go to the fifth year girl dorm and get Evelyn Crouch for me please?" he whispered to the girl who nodded and immediately did as he asked.
"Hey Evelyn, someone in the common room wants to talk to you, he told me not to tell you who it is," the girl said, poking her head in the room. The two girls headed to the common room, Riley was waiting at the end of the corridor waiting for her.
"Hey long time no see," he uttered with a smile. "Riddle left after you did," he filled her in.
"I'm sorry Riley," she breathed, hugging him tightly and Barty who saw this walked over to them. "Hi Barty," she greeted, he looked hurt by the coldness in her voice.
"You missed my birthday or you forgot," he said coldly.
"I didn't forget Barty, I'm sorry," Evie said in a harsh voice that didn't match her words.
"You could've fooled me. You haven't spoken to me in weeks; you haven't even looked at me – your own brother. You haven't spoken to Benny either or Riley and he's your best friend, you'd rather spend your time alone or with your twisted boyfriend," Barty ranted, it sounded as if he'd been itching to say all of this; Just as he finished Tom stormed over to them, pulling Barty away from Evie as he was mere inches from her face as he ranted.
"Get away from her!" Tom yelled, pushing Barty further away as Evie wiped away the tear that had escaped her eye.
"Oh yeah, here's your twisted boyfriend come to save you from to save you from your own brother," Barty replied before leaving the common room, Evie doing the exact same to her dorm. Tom stepped up to Riley but he didn't flinch like most people would, he stood there staring at Tom in the face.
"I thought I told you to stay away from her?" Tom demanded in a hushed voice.
"I will find out what you're doing to her and I will make you pay," Riley said in his ear before walking away. Everybody in the common room were staring at the scene and among the crowd was Benny who had been playing wizard chess with his friends, he was close to tears.
"What's going on with your brother and sister?" one of his friends questioned quietly.
"I don't know," he replied still staring at Tom who was staring back. The young boy quickly got up and left the common room, his goal: to find his brother.
Benny found Barty and they conversed about what had happened; Barty telling Benny not to worry but the little brother voiced that he wanted his sister back and Barty agreed. Tom and Barty had another conversation and the former managed to make Evie look guilty about the petrification's and managed to get Barty to question his sister innocence.
"What if Riddle's right? What if Evie is attacking the students?" Barty questioned Maxine as they sat in his dorm.
"Barty don't torture yourself, Evelyn wouldn't do that," Maxine tried to reassure the sobbing boy.
"But she's been acting strange ever since the attacks," Barty said, still convincing himself that it really was his sister.
