Missed Chances
Sorry for the pathetic late update. Like a year late. I've just starting binge watching the show again and all the feels have resurfaced. I so don't own the show.
Chapter 7:
"Where's Sam?" Pacey asked Joey sitting by her side in the hospital's waiting room.
"Doug." Joey said. "He took Amy home and I asked him to take him. He was a little shaken."
"No wonder. I think we all have. Did you know about Jen?"
"Not that she was that sick. No." Joey's phone buzzed. "Hello?"
"Hey Joey. Listen I can't get Sammy to sleep. He wants to talk to you."
"Sure. Pacey is here too."
"You're on speaker bud."
"Mommy? Daddy?" He sounded sleepy but most of all he sounded. Off.
"Hey Sammy." Pacey said softly. "You're not feeling tired?"
"I want you to come home now." Sammy sounded scared. "Mommy too."
"Sam. Listen baby, we have to make sure aunt Jen is doing better."
"Is she..better?" Sam added in.
"Yeah well, she's well being taken care of." Pacey said. "They are making her better."
Silence. "Uncle Doug says Amy and I have to stay here." Sam was so much like both his parents it was scary. Sometimes he was reasonable like Joey or sensitive and a goofball like Pacey. Right now the Potter side was kicking in.
"Well it's getting pretty late sweetheart, you need to sleep." Joey said softy. "Tell you what? How about a story?"
"No thanks." Pacey made a face that followed on Joey hitting his side. "I'm just too sad for a story." There was the Witter side.
"You worry about taking care of Amy,okay buddy? Mommy and I will keep and eye on Jen."
"You be the best cousin you can be Sammy. Amy really needs you." Joey said.
"How do you know?" Sam asked.
Always the inquisitor. "How do you know Amy's sad. She can't tell you."
"Well it's the same way I know you are sad." Joey put in.
"But I just told you. Amy can't talk."
"Okay, enough of this boy genius." Doug's voice came into the line. "It's too late for you to be up anyways. We're going back to bed."
Joey sighed. Sammy had always been smart. She outwitted her most of the time. Mostly like Pacey. .
"That kid is something isn't he?" Pacey smiled as Joey dropped the phone. "Like his beautiful mom I should say."
"He's nervous. He rants when he's nervous." Joey told him.
"Now see… How is that possible for a four year old to do? Unless he's Joey Potter's child that is." He smiled softly.
She smiled back.
"Ok, here's the deal. She knows that you know, but she's got a few requests. No maudlin soap opera theatrics. She wants the room drama-free and full of laughter. No tears. In fact, she's insisted me to bar anyone from the hospital that cries" Jack said.
" I can't promise that. " came Joey's response.
"Who could? " Dawson put in grimly.
"Then you leave. Jen's rules" Jack was serious. And Joey was fidgeting. Pacey noticed.
" It's what she wants, children. Just do the best you can.
"Do we all go in together?"
"Uh, not at first. I think we should ease into this. So why don't we try one at a time?"
"This isn't happening. I can't believe this is happening."
"Who wants to go first?" Jack asked.
Joey bolted out, rolling her eyes she did. "Hey…" Dawson called after her.
"Joe, wait up!" Pacey trailed along. "What's up Potter…"
"I can't do this." She gasped. Her back was against a wall and she was holding on to her face with her hands. "I can't…"
"You don't have to go in." He told her.
"It might be the last chance I ever get to see her."
Pacey didn't know what to say. "I never thought I'd be this hard. I never thought we'd deal with something this hard since…"
Silence
"I know…" They shared a knowing look and he took her hand. "It's going to be alright Joey."
"You can't promise me that Pace."
"No, but I can help you. Please let me help you…"
"They sent you in first." Jen said. She looked so fragile. So sick. It made Pacey uneasy.
"Yeah, l'm the opening act." He told her.
"Well, you can start off by wiping that fake smile off your face. Say something, Pacey."
Well, Jack tells me you're other than that, everything's okay, right?"
" Thank you." She said softly, wanting to hug him.
"Come here." She did. "Where's that beautiful boy of yours? I miss him."
"Doug is on babysitting duty." Pacey said. "I didn't know if it was okay to bring him."
"Please do, I so need the joy of little Sammy around me."
"Jen..."
"No, remember the rules..."
Pacey sighed."You do know she'll always count on us, right?"
Amy. The child she'd never see grow up.
"Yes. Now, let's talk about something else Witter."
"Duly noted, these are for you." He handed her flowers. As always the sweetest.
"And you and your baby mama?" Jen smirked.
"Really? You're using that term as to reffering to Joey Potter?" Pacey said playfully. "She's being a mom."
"To your kid."
"To my kid."
Jen sighed. "I still can't believe you and Joey had a kid and still are not together."
Pacey took a spot on the bed. "It actually took a more complicated tun once Sammy came into the picture. We just wanted to do the right thing."
"How is is not the right thing to be together, raising a child. Trust me if I had been given the chance I would have done it for Amy."
Let that sink in.
"Jen…"
"Just promise me something Pacey. You promise me you'll fight for him and Joey. You never stop fighting for them."
"I'm all out of conflict. I have been for years."
"Well, if you ever wanna be reminded of it you can just watch Dawson's show." Jen sighed. "What about that girl that they cast as me? l've often thought about getting a lawyer and suing his ass." Jen stated, it was time to play with other side of Capeside's eternal pairing. Even if she had to use Dawson's show.
"Well, at least you get to have sex. All l do is mope around and pine after Petey, then Colby then Colby, then Petey." Joey stated.
Silence.
"Well, you never could make a decision." Jen said and Joey shot her a look.
"You know, that's where he got it all wrong. l mean, the eternal triangle, it's based on actual events? lt's not about Sam choosing between Colby and Petey. lt never was."
It wasn't?
"lt's about Sam making a decision with herself." Joey said after a moment.
"Or her child." Jen said. "Can we just use the real names here? There's no need to protect the guilty in this room."
"It's just sad that it took a TV show to make me see it."
"What? See what? l'm incredibly interested in all of this." the blonde said with a weak smile.
"The only decision left is the one that l need to make with stop running once and for all.l mean, l know who l'm supposed to be with.l've always known."
"Really? Jen was geniunly interested in knowing the forever answer once and for all
"Yeah, but then the fear takes over, the free-floating, anxiety-ridden fear in my stomach that makes me runJen, l am completely comfortable running.l really don't know any other way. And now I'm dragging Sammy along with me."
"So it is Pacey." It wasn't a question. Joey was quiet.
"Maybe l can if l demand that you make that decision? No more running.l'm going to make it my dying wish, my death will serve a greater purpose. lt's your ultimate motivator. And I can finally see my godson happy."
"Jen, don't be like that." Joey sighed. "Pacey and I do our best with what we have, with what happened to us. I finished college by some miracolous way and he turned out to be a wonderful father, the best one I could ask for."
"How does that not help my case Joey? You and Pacey have been on and off more times that I can count on, and one of those happened to bring Sammy into the world."
What did you think? I might update in the next few weeks, I took some parts directly from the ep, I do hope you enjoy.
Looks like Pacey and Joey are hiding something, isn't it?"
