The glade was nearly silent except for the occasional croaks from the nearby frogs and the chirping of crickets as the night began to lighten into day. There was a slight whistle from the wind, disrupting the still surface of the pond the Pegasus known as Starbringer was communing at; moving the water ever so slightly, yet bringing the young stallion out of his trance of muttering.
For nearly the entire night the Pegasus had been kneeling at this sacred pond, offering hymns of praise to the divine beings that watched over him. His mentor, the mystic Zecora, insisted that he must partake in this ritual so that he could become one with the gods. He started by making a deep incision in his foreleg with a sharp rock he had found, offering his blood to Mars in exchange for the strength of an Earth Pony. He then took the rock and laid it on the ground before dripping the red liquid onto it, followed by a swipe from his hoof to divide the splash of blood evenly in two; thus, in respect to Gemini. Next, he dipped the wound in the pond, watching in relief as the water magically healed the gash; thus giving a sacrifice to Aquarius. With that, he muttered a prayer to the water spirit before bravely setting hoof onto the surface of the pond; his heart put to ease as he began to slowly walk on the water, mimicking the ability of Orion the Hunter. This continued as he did a respective sacrifice to each god before he could be finished. Finally, he returned to the banks of the pond and began saying his final words to the celestial gods before the dawn would swallow them up for another day. What Starbringer didn't notice while he spoke his incantations; however, was that he was being watched.
In a patch of bushes nearby, the Pegasus Elemental Slash watched in utter fascination the ritual he was seeing take place. The colt that was performing it had a dark-blue coat, along with silver wings as he gazed at his reflection while muttering to himself. Slash wasn't sure if he should show himself or to quietly remain hidden, but he found himself rooted to the spot.
"I should just leave him alone, if I were to walk out now, you never know how he could react."Slash mused as he watched the colt fling his hooves into the air, his gibberish chanting getting increasingly louder.
Starbringer had reaching the apex of the ritual, he could feel it in his very soul as his whispers became shouts, echoing across the glade.
Suddenly, a voice spoke in his ear, "So, you wish to have our power, colt?" The voice spoke in a deep, rumbling voice that reminded the young Pegasus of thunder.
"Yes," Starbringer replied, excitement clearly showing, even in his thoughts, "I wish to become one with you. To be your mortal vessel is my goal."
"Perhaps," Another voice responded, this one also having a gruff quality, "But you must prove that you are worthy."
"You must equalize the good and the bad," A new voice piped in, as if two were speaking as one, "Then, we can fuse with your soul." Starbringer recognized this was the voice of Gemini, the twins who acted in unison.
"We shall need to test your abilities," The gruff voice said, "Through a manner of hunting one's quarry." That one was Orion, who was renowned for his hunting.
"The primal act of bloodshed," The first voice added, this one having to be Mars, the god of war, "To prove that your bravery and courage can carry you through a battle."
"Who must I hunt?" Starbringer asked, fearful of the answer.
The voices were silent for a moment before replying, "Take the life of the one who rudely eavesdrops on this sacred ritual," Mars said, malice in his voice, "Only then can you truly prove your worth." Starbringer was confused at first, he hadn't realized somepony had been watching him commune. Then, suddenly, a red wisp appeared in front of his line of vision, leaving a trail as it flew over to a nearby line of bushes, where it hovered. Standing up, albeit a bit unstable, Starbringer noticed a pair of orange eyes staring out at him from where the red wisp hovered.
"Show us your skills." He heard Orion whisper into his ear.
He began to walk forward, eyes locked on the intruder's as he made a beeline for the bushes. Noticing the eyes suddenly disappear, Starbringer hadn't noticed that the interloper had fled until it was too late.
"Don't worry," Orion said, "I'll bring him to you." Suddenly, there was a loud yelp from deep in the foliage as a pair of large, magical hands hefted the squirming stalker out of the woods and deposited him rather harshly in the open glade. He stared up into Starbringer's eyes, they were filled with terror and fear.
"Ah, Phobos and Deimos," Mars agreed, a chuckle resonating through Starbringer's skull, "I seem clearly in this whelp's look."
"What are you?" The stallion asked, his white hide glowing in the moonlight while his fiery orange mane matched his fearful eyes in color.
"I," Starbringer began, not very sure what to call himself, "am the oracle of the gods. Here to punish you for intruding on this sacred ritual."
The stallion's brow creased while standing up defiantly, "And I am Elemental Slash, loyal to Princess Celestia and her divine rule."
Starbringer was offended by Elemental Slash's remark, "She came upon my masters' land, taking their rightful places in the sky." He shouted the insult bravely, hopefully this is what Orion meant by loyalty.
Slash scoffed, fed up by the colt's brash remark, "You and your barbarian religion can stay away from me and my people, colt; or you're going to regret ever setting hoof in this region."
Gritting his teeth, Starbringer growled back, "It was you who came to my land unwelcome, but now you will have to pay the price won't you?" The voices began to get louder inside his head as he suddenly leapt up, unleashing the strength of Mars into Elemental Slash's face. The stallion took the blow directly to the muzzle, sliding back a few yards from the punch. He sat up in a daze, feeling his shattered nose to discover blood gushing freely.
"Bastard." Slash snarled, appearing to be incapacitated while really reaching for his trademark throwing knives. He let his head drop to the ground, appearing defeated as he heard Starbringer approach; then he willed some of his fire magic into a knife before leaping up, swinging the blade wildly with the flames providing an extra edge. Unfortunately, Starbringer managed to get back enough only to be slashed across the chest as his tiny wings beat backwards to push him away desperately. Slash felt a crazy grin spread across his face as he approached the colt, pulling another knife free to engulf in flames. As he drew nearer, two figures appeared alongside Starbringer, each of them gesturing with a limb to suddenly throw Slash back with a mighty gust of wind and dousing the flames on his knives. Managing to stay upright, Slash growled angrily before taking to the air, his knives glinting in the light as he watched the young colt stare up at him.
His accuracy was known to be uncanny, but something wasn't feeling right as he threw the two flaming knives, one of them missing entirely, while the other managed to graze Starbringer's flank.
"I can't concentrate for some reason." Slash pondered, glancing down to his hooves and saw them trembling uncontrollably. He watched as mystical energy began to condense around Starbringer, forming a large bow. Then, the arrow materialized as well, the magical tip pointing at Slash's exposed frame. He ceased flapping his wings and dropped out of the sky, trying to escape the shot. Starbringer seemed to anticipate this, as he shifted the bow to aim right where Slash was going to land. Beating his wings desperately, Slash managed to maneuver past the projectile as it was fired, but watching in horror as it sliced a sliver of his left hindhoof off. Reeling from the attack, Slash tried to come up with a battle strategy.
"Phobos and Deimos." Starbringer suddenly spoke, his eyes blank and emotionless as a bipedal figure appeared alongside him as he approached Slash, who backed away, "The embodiments of fear and terror haunt your mind."
Slash had no idea what the young Pegasus was talking about, but he didn't feel scared; but still, the pit in his stomach and the cold sweat breaking out across his body was enough to confirm Starbringer's comment.
"Damn, he's right." Slash thought to himself, "Guess I have to use my main offense then." He decided, willing electricity to his hooves. This was his special ability, from the time where he was gifted from large amounts of magic hitting him at the same time. He now could use fire and electricity with ease. Taking a deep breath, Slash tried to ignore the doubts clouding his mind as he stretched out his wings and began to run at Starbringer, his hooves crackling with electricity. Then, at the last moment, Slash leaped up, willing flames to the fore as he watched them mix with the electricity.
Starbringer was surprised to find the Pegasus he versed also knew how to use magic. He slid back slightly, the personification of Virgo leaping up to meet Elemental Slash. The two clashed, Virgo's fists connected with Slash's hooves as a wave of electricity and celestial energy nearly knocked Starbringer down. Watching in awe, Starbringer saw Virgo suddenly shift in form, splitting into two to become Gemini, who brought their hands up to blast Slash away with a gust of wind. It worked, knocking the stallion to the ground effectively. He looked up, horror still etched on his face as Starbringer strode forward, the spirit of Gemini shifting into the large ram of Aries as it fell in line with him. Without a pause, Starbringer flew up to stand on Aries's back, watching as the ram dipped its head, suddenly charging forward violently. Using his mighty wings, Slash managed to move in time, watching as the mighty hooves stormed past. Looking back, Starbringer could see that his opponent was standing rather closely to the banks of the pond, glancing at it ever so often.
Suddenly, the voice of Aquarius, which flowed elegantly like water, spoke to the young colt, "I can sense he is afraid of the pond," The water spirit commented, flowing through Starbringer's mind excitedly, "We shall help you capture him and drown him in the water," The voice of Pisces, which like Gemini, spoke with two voices, "Then, your challenge will be complete."The voice of Scorpio hissed in agreement.
Throwing forward his hooves, Starbringer watched as the spirit of Aries rushed out from underneath him, flying towards Slash as the two fishes of Pisces. Without a second thought, Starbringer rushed after them, willing the armor of Scorpio to engulf his body. He watched in amazement as the mystical shell wrapped tightly around his frame, a large scorpion tail stretching over his body to match. He looked back to Slash, who was trying to launch fireballs at the two fish that circled him. As Starbringer reached the battle, he saw the spirit of Pisces was trying to materialize a bubble of water around Slash, effectively trapping him. Running suddenly into the fray, Starbringer leapt at his foe, the claws of Scorpio materializing in-front of his hooves as he traveled through the air.
They collided, Starbringer driving the claws of Scorpio deep into Slash's side. The two stumbled out of Pisces's dome of water, pushing towards the pond which began to glisten under the first rays of dawn. Realizing with dread, Starbringer realized that Slash had gripped the claws tightly with his forelegs, holding the two of them together as they fought. Coming up with a new idea, Starbringer whipped Scorpio's tail at his enemy's face, trying to reach his head, but Slash was too quick, dodging the stinger just barely. Finally, decided to will a burst of water from his mouth, using the power of Cancer to knock Slash free and send him stumbling into the water.
It worked, Slash staggered backwards, not aware of the water behind him as he fell, quickly sinking underneath the pond's surface. Starbringer could hear the voices cheering with glee as a cloud of blood slowly rose to into view, heralding the apparent defeat at Elemental Slash the Intruder.
What Starbringer didn't realize was that Slash was still alive, sinking quickly to the bottom of the pond. Barely holding onto life, Slash heart hammered with fear as his body sank, trying to think of a way he could escape his watery grave. Flapping his wings was useless underwater, the density too much for him at this moment. He tried willing his electricity to perhaps shoot him out, but was met by a shocking volt that nearly killed him. Trying his final option, Slash used as much fire as he could muster to his hooves. At first quickly being snuffed out, it eventually caused enough heat to boil the water enough that there was resistance. This dawned hope in Slash, who urged more flames to the fore until there a burst strong enough to launch him straight out of the water and into the morning sky.
As he reached the tallest point of his jump, Slash pulled another pair of knives and descended on the oblivious Starbringer, who was reveling in his victory. Managing to turn in time, the colt wasn't ready to take Slash's full weight as the stallion pounced, driving the first knife deep into his chest. His head slumping back, Starbringer seemed defeated until the horns of a bull flickered in celestial magic upon on his brow. With the striking force of Taurus, Starbringer tried to gore Slash. Laughing manically, Slash found the fear and terror that had gripped him was replaced with the hold of insanity as he threw the colt's small frame away from him, watching as his foe desperately crawled for the banks of the pond.
"Hurry, young colt. My waters can heal your wounds." The voice of Aquarius urged, trying to spur Starbringer on. He reached the water, dipping his wounded hoof into the water to suddenly be healed. Trying to roll into the water, Starbringer noticed the crazed Slash closing in, madness now griping his mind as he twiddled with his remaining knife.
Rolling into the shallows of the pond, Starbringer felt the waters healing his many wounds, but what caught his eye was the sharp glare of the Sun as it crested over the horizon, filling the glade with light. Just like that, everything seemed to cease, the voices speaking in his head, the spirits coming to his aid, and most importantly, the water healing him. Lying in the pond, his blood beginning to turn the waters red, Starbringer watched as Slash approached, his knife held high for a moment before he sank it into the colt's chest.
Starbringer was too tired to scream out in pain as Slash suddenly conducted electricity through the blade, amplifying in power due to the water, effectively shocking Starbringer's punctured heart into silence. As his foe lay dead, Slash winced as his blood dripped into the water and mixed with Starbringer as he turned, limping out of the water, collecting his knives, and shuffling off into the dense Everfree Forest, many cuts littered across his body; wondering if anyone would believe his scuffle with Starbringer was true.
Elemental Slash wins by lasting out with his endurance and age, then unleashing wisely when Starbringer is tired and drained of magic when dawn comes. However, if Starbringer were older and more experience with his abilities, then Elemental would have lost easily. Also, the fact that this battle took place near a body of water, along that it took place near dawn, was key in this battle, as it provided advantages to Starbringer and to Slash, respectfully, allowing many close calls.
