I'M BAAACCCK. I must sincerely apologize for taking almost a year to update. First, I had not even realized it's been that long... and, I will not lie, I had severe writer's block for the next two chapters. I have 3 written for*after*, but I was not quite sure how to get to those events. FINALLY I figured it out, so will hopefully get the next 4 chapters up withing the next one to two weeks! I hope you enjoy, and do not hate me too much ;)

Chapter 7 – The Trial

Monica and Andrew had both closed their eyes during the trip and as they opened them, they both got noticeably paler. Feeling Monica squeeze his hand tighter, he looked at her, noticing how scared and intimidated she looked- though he couldn't help but share in her sentiments as he glance around the courtroom. On either side of them were rows upon rows of seats that were filled with angels. It was a packed house.

He was snapped out of his reverie by Tess's gentle pat on his back. He watched her start walking down the aisle, then hand in hand he and Monica followed. They could feel every single eye in the courtroom watching their every move.

Once at the front, Andrew chanced a glance to the jury box, and what he saw caused a wave of relief to wash over him- 2 familiar faces were sitting there. "At least we have a sliver of a chance," he thought to himself. Giving Monica a little nudge, he said "Look at the jury." Her eyebrows shot up, but then a smile lit up her face as she saw them- Henry and Rafael. Noticing her gaze, Henry gave a slight smile and Rafael nodded his head.

Andrew then looked to Sam, who gave him one of the coldest glares he could ever remember seeing. He quickly looked away, back to Monica, who had taken her seat in the middle chair next to Tess. He sat down next to her, and when he did, he kissed her, not caring who was watching.

They were startled from their position by the bailiff shouting "All rise! The Honorable Judge Jeannette is now presiding." An angel whom Andrew did not recognize walked in wearing a white robe. The judge, he thought to himself.

Andrew had a bad feeling about this. She was of short stature and skinny, but what worried him was the fact that she wore a Look that could give Tess' a run for its money. Monica must have had the same thought as she moved herself closer to him.

"Father, this is not going to be easy." He heard Tess mutter, and this did nothing to calm his fears.

"Be seated." Judge Jeannette announced. "We are here in the case of Internal Affairs v The Star-Crossed Lovers." Tess rolled her eyes at the name of the case.

"Are both sides ready?" She asked.

"The Prosecution is ready, Your Honor." Sam replied

"The Defense is ready, Your Honor." Stated Tess.

"You may proceed with your opening statements, counsel." The judge motioned to Sam.

"Your Honor and ladies and gentlemen of the jury: the defendants have been found to be in violation of two strict Angelic Laws- carrying on a romantic relationship as if they were humans, but even worse- they have been caught lying on multiple occasions." There was a clearly audible gasp heard throughout the courtroom, and Monica held even tighter to Andrew's arm as he himself closed his eyes. Sam continued "The evidence will show that these were not little lies that were needed to further an assignment, they were used for their own selfish gain."

"Objection, Your Honor, that is an opinion and calls for speculation!" Tess shouted.

"I am merely stating what the jury will see throughout this trial, Your Honor." Sam spat back.

"I will allow it. Please continue, counsel" Judge Jeannette stated, not missing the angry look on Tess's face.

"Thank you, Your Honor," Sam stated with a smirk and then continued "but nothing further."

"Counsel." The judge motioned to Tess.

"Thank you." She stood up and continued "Your Honor, and ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I will start with this- this is one of the most crazy goings-on that I will ever be a part of. Now, with that being said- here we have two angels of God. You know, the One we all work for? The One who made ALL of us? They are being charged with breaking Angelic Law. You will come to know the truth: that God Himself does not want this to be happening, but that once again His Will is being ignored.

There was rambling throughout the courtroom, and Tess wondered if she had just dug herself into a deep hole with that final comment. "This should be quick." She heard Sam mutter.

"Prosecution may call their first witness." The Judge called out.

Monica and Andrew sat there, fellow angel after fellow angel damning them, criticizing them.

After what seemed like hours, Sam was finally done.

"Defense, you may call your first witness."

Monica and Andrew could not help but smile, realizing there were still those on their side. They watched as Gloria, Adam, Claire, Kelly and even, maybe most shockingly, Ruth all took the stand to defend them. Each talked about how both of them helped to shape them, get them back on the right track. That even if they had broken a law- they never let it get in the way of their work. Most importantly, spoken by Kelly- "why would God make them and put them together on assignments, knowing how it would turn out, if what is happening between them was not supposed to be? Why would he allow me to leave His side to raise a child, but not allow for love between two that are still doing His Will?"

"Both the prosecution and the defense have rested their cases. The attorneys will now present their final arguments. Jury, please remember, what the attorneys say is NOT evidence. However, you should listen closely. They are intended to aid you in understanding the case. Prosecution, you may begin" stated the Judge.

"Thank you, your Honor", Sam answered and continued "Members of the jury, today you have heard testimony about two of your coworkers engaging in, what humans would call, an 'illegal activity'. There must be a punishment!"

"OBJECTION. His statement calls for a conclusion!" Tess screamed out.

"Sustained," the Judge answered. "The jury is to disregard counsel's final statement. Defense, you may proceed with your closing argument."

"Thank you, your Honor. Members of the jury, today you have heard so much from both sides. The Prosecution simply did not provide enough evidence to show that my clients have done anything to deserve this. As you are making your decision, I will leave you to ponder this question "Why, if it is wrong, that angels are not supposed to have 'human' feelings, do they? Why, of all the Angels of Death that God could have assigned to Monica and me on that wedding day, was it Andrew? As I recall, she had a pretty deep resentment of him at first," she turned and smiled at Monica, who blushed and bowed her head "but something obviously changed that. The only thing I could possibly think of is God has willed it. Thank you." Tess finished and sat down.

Monica and Andrew, both with tears in their eyes, smiled at the woman who was like a mother figure to the both of them.

"Members of the jury, you have heard all of the testimony concerning this case. It is up to you to determine the facts. You and you alone, are the judges of fact. In just a moment, the bailiff will take you to the jury room to consider your verdict. One of the first things you will want to do is select a foreperson that will preside over your deliberations the way that a chairperson does at a meeting. It will be the foreperson's duty to sign the verdict form when you have agreed on a verdict. Whatever verdict you render MUST be the majority. That is each and every person must agree on the same verdict. "Bailiff, please." The Judge stated.

"All rise!" the Bailiff shouted. As each juror stood up, Monica, Andrew and Tess joined hands, Tess silently praying that she was able to get through to them, while Monica and Andrew prayed that this joy would not be taken from them.

What seemed like only minutes later, the three saw the door the jurors had exited reopen, and they filed back in. Andrew wrapped his arm tighter around Monica's waste, his heart feeling as if it would jump out of his chest. Monica tensed as the judge asked "Have you reached a verdict?"

"Yes we have, Your Honor." A youngish looking angel answered.

"And?" she asked.

"We the jury, in the case of Internal Affairs v The Star-Crossed Lovers, find the defendants….
