Ch.6: Perfection

The bell rang loudly and my heart jumped at the sound.

My Algebra 2 class had gone by slowly and I couldn't wait to get out of there. I sat there awkwardly in my desk the whole time while the kids around me often stared; it made me uncomfortable.

My teacher, Mrs. Pfeifer, was a very eccentric woman who often couldn't stay on the subject. In two hours we already knew that she had a daughter who was extremely accident prone, a dog that had too many medical problems, and a husband who kept himself busy; and I couldn't blame him.

Chemistry came and went also, but at a slower rate, unfortunately. The two hours felt like two years – due to the fact that my teacher, Mr. Bruner, had a monotone voice, and I couldn't stand him.

Mr. Bruner was your typical definition of a man who probably still lived with his mother. His glasses were far too big for his face and sat on the end of his nose – making him push them up every ten seconds, and he wore a button up shirt with a pocket protector. Listening to him talk made me feel like I was stuck in a bad re-run fest of Revenge of the Nerds, but without the witty humor.

I stood up from my desk and picked my bag up from the floor, reaching in and grabbing my map while I did so. I examined the map for a few seconds, until I memorized how to get to the cafeteria, and then I returned it to the safety of my woven bag.

Pushing the door outward, I immediately felt the cold air as the rain fell down around me.

The weather made me realize why my mom didn't miss Forks, and I groaned as I pulled my hood up over my head, once again - sprinting as fast as I could to the lunch room to avoid the raindrops.

I pushed open the door to the cafeteria and regretted it.

As I entered the plain looking room filled with students - everyone turned and stared at me; I felt like the main attraction at a carnival or something.

I walked through the line grabbing a chicken sandwich and a salad, as I felt all the eyes watching my every move. I heard the whispers and the giggling from girls, but everyone seemed to quickly lose interest in me- turning back to their food.

I sighed – thankful that I could finally find Brent in the crowd without being gawked at, but he was nowhere to be seen. I began to pout, when an arm rose out of the crowd.

"Hey! Aiyanna Black! over here!" A girl exclaimed; waving frantically.

I slowly walked with my brows furrowed as I sat down at a table filled with unfamiliar faces.

"Brent told us to keep an eye out for you." The girl said smiling. "I'm his older sister Karen."

I smiled as I let out a sigh of relief, he told his sister to look for me. I blushed. "Well thanks for not throwing me to the lions. I would've hated to sit with all the staring people"

The table full of kids started laughing as they munched happily on their food. It wasn't LaPush, but at least I was quickly making new friends and I knew my mom would be happy for me.

I began to nibble at the salad on my plate, when I saw them for the first time.

Perfection was the only word that came to mind as they casually entered the cafeteria.

All of them had faces that any magazine would die to put on their cover, and they looked like they just stepped off of a movie set. Their moves were so smooth, so effortless; I couldn't stop myself from staring.

"Of course there's another one." I heard a snobby voice say to my left.

A thick girl slammed her tray down next to me and rolled her eyes after she looked me up and down. Her red curls fell down over her shoulders and bounced as she laughed.

"Those are the Cullen's your drooling over." She sneered.

She picked up a breadstick and began munching on it loudly – and I immediately lost my appetite, sliding my tray to my right.

"Who?" I asked subtly, my eyes trailing over to the isolated table again.

They all sat there with trays in front of them, but none of them touched the food on them. The blonde girl with the prettiest face of them all quickly pulled out a mirror in a fluid-like motion, and I wanted to puke at the sight of how gorgeous she was.

"Hello? Earth to Indian girl." The nasty red head snapped in my face.

I quickly glanced at her, resentment filling my eyes; she was really starting to annoy me. She started laughing again and she put her hand on my shoulder.

"That's Rosalie Hale, the disgustingly gorgeous one. She's with the handsome bear of a boy next to her, Emmett Cullen." The girl explained, pointing to each person. "Pretty weird since they're siblings through adoption."

I quickly glanced at the two of them, my mouth flopping open. The boy next to her, Emmett Cullen, was the biggest teenage boy I had ever seen. Emmett had short brown hair and a rugged jaw, but his features were soft. He wore a gray form-fitting tee and I could see the huge, robust muscles jutting out from underneath the sleeves.

The girl next to him, Rosalie Hale, was quite the opposite. Her long blonde hair billowed down to her shoulders and sat perfectly around her angelic face, but her smile seemed cold and empty. Her pale skin looked flawless in the bright lighting – all of them had beyond normal pale skin, and her physique was one any girl would be jealous of.

"They're all so….perfect." I said. I brought my eyes back to the red headed girl – who was far from perfection, and frowned.

"Yeah they are." She replied. "That's Alice Cullen and Jasper Hale, They're together too."

I followed her gaze to the next set of people her finger was pointed at, and let out a long sigh; the amazing looks continued.

Alice Cullen looked breakable as she sat there holding the frantic looking Jasper Hale's hand. Her short black hair bordered her petite pale face and she sat at the table with a blank expression. She was small and thin, but there was something strong about her – I just couldn't tell what, and her movements were like a dancer's.

Jasper Hale, her boyfriend, was acting like a caged animal. His blonde hair was wild – yet somehow beautiful, and his amber eyes darted around the room meticulously. He was lean and muscular with dangerous features, but his eyes seemed careful and kind. I continued examining them, until the girl's rude voice snapped me out of my daze.

"And of course, there's Mr. Perfect himself, Edward Cullen." She said purring. "He is the only single one of the bunch."

I looked back over to the last person at the isolated table and inhaled swiftly as his eyes met with mine.

He sat there staring at me with a bewildered expression – his amber eyes sparkling, and I saw sadness spread across his face. He quickly got up and darted out of the cafeteria so gracefully, it broke me from the trance I was just in.

The last boy, Edward Cullen, was the most stunning boy I had ever seen. He had auburn hair that framed his god-like face perfectly and his amber eyes were striking. His body was tall and muscular – not as muscular as Emmett Cullen, but it was well defined enough.

I sat there dazzled – and slightly confused, until a familiar voice brought me back to the table.

"Hey guys, miss me?" Brent asked, shaking his blonde hair as he sat to the right of me.

"Well I did, but Aiyanna sure didn't" The red head said leaning over and looking at him. "She's been staring at the Cullens, particularly Edward."

I glared at the red head next to me who was drooling over Brent – I should've known he'd been claimed. I glanced at Brent who was staring down at his tray now; his smile quickly fading to a frown.

"Wait, how do you know my name?" I asked the girl, my eyes narrowing at her.

"Brent talked about you all during Calculus." She rolled her eyes as she spoke. It was pretty obvious she wanted Brent to herself, and I couldn't afford another fight.

"Penelope why don't you just get over yourself," Karen said harshly, grabbing Brent's arm. "My brothers not interested."

I snickered when Penelope gasped in horror. The whole table up roared in laughter as Penelope grabbed her tray and stomped out of the lunch room.

"I really need to go." I said putting my hand on Brent's shoulder as I spoke. "My class is pretty far."

I grabbed my bag and stood up, thanking everyone for letting me sit with them. I looked back at Brent who was still sulking and the guilt overwhelmed me.

"Want to walk with me?" I asked, shooting Brent a pleading look.

His eyes immediately lit up and he jumped up from the table, the frown disappearing as his smile rapidly returned. "Sure."

I laughed softly as I walked out of the cafeteria with Brent, but all I could think about was Edward Cullen.
