Chapter 7

The house music could be heard throughout the entire school but it wasn't waking anybody up because every student was already at the party. The staff room was buzzing from the heavy bass and loud talking.

The adults were gone and the booze had been found. Some kids had done a full school search and found that the reason Mr. Hinge hadn't been driven mad from five years of teaching at Coates was that he kept a wide collection of hard alcohols in his bunk room. The kids had brought it "straight" to Caine even though they clearly couldn't stand up without something to hold onto.

"Boys, save it for the party," Caine said smirking and placing each kid gently into a chair.

"Shannksss," one boy slurred.

Now the booze was on display in the teachers lounge and multiple bottles were empty.

The teenagers were having the time of their lives and only a few of them had thrown up.

Caine was mingling and making small talk with pretty much everyone while Drake was standing in a corner looking incredibly sullen. Drake clearly wasn't a fan of big crowds or loud music, probably because the only loud sounds that he enjoyed were screams. People kept pressing into him and bumping his as they passed. Two people had already spilled their drinks on him and now a total of seven people had been hurt by him in the forty five minutes that the party had been going.

Diana was no where to be seen. Caine had mentioned is "date" with Gale and Diana had freaked at him again. Her voice was still ringing in his ears.

"Caine, check your phone," Diana told him after pressing the sleep button on her own. The head masters office was occupied by four teens; Caine, Diana, Drake, and Jack. Diana was sitting in a chair up against a wall watching the three boys twiddle, pace, and squirm. The boys pulled out their phone even though Diana had only told Caine to.

"Nothing. No signal." Caine kept turning it off and on again to see if that would help. It didn't.

"Shit," Drake swore, but his anger didn't last very long. Drake didn't last very long. He'd never really cared that much for technology.

"No. No no no. That's not... This can't be... There's nothing. No internet or signal. Absolutely nothing..." Jack trailed off. He looked like a kid whose favorite toy had just been stolen. Then again, he was a kid whose favorite toy had just been stolen, Diana thought to herself.

"Well, that puts an interesting spin on things." Diana's voice broke through the air of fear.

"It most certainly does. We should probably send out scouts or something to see if it's the whole world that's gone like this or if it's just here or just here and Perdido Beach or if-"

"Caine, cool off," Drake interrupted. It was probably a good thing that he had because if Caine had kept going he might've started sounding scared. "We aren't going to get anything done until tomorrow or the next day. Right now people are just excited that this bitch," he kicked the headmasters chair to suggest it was her he was talking about, "Is gone. They won't doing anything except trashing the place for at least the next twenty four hours."

"I hate saying this," Diana added with a forced voice, "But Drake," she took in a breath, "Is right."

There was an awkward silence for a few seconds that ended with Caine bringing his hand up to Jack's chin and pushing his mouth closed. "Fine. We'll have the party to set everyone at ease. This needs to run smoothly and parties are a perfect distraction. Loud music, lots of people, plenty of booze-"

"Distraction from what?"

"Diana, didn't you ever learn that it's rude to interrupt?" Drake bit back immediately.

"I'm sorry," she said in a sarcastic voice and cocked her head and glared at Caine, "Excuse me, but distractions from what?"

"Nothing. Not important." Caine tried to shrug it off. He hadn't planned on Diana learning about this but he had let it slip out. Caine was seriously regretting this now.

"Important," Diana insisted.

"No. It's not."

Diana held the glare for a second more before she turned her head swiftly to the youngest boy in the room. "Jack?" Jack had been busy turning his phone on and off, hoping for a signal when the mention of his name brought him back to harsh reality. Jack's head shot up and he looked with wild eyes through centimeter thick glasses at the other students.

"Um, yes?"

"What's happening after the party?" Diana was looking at him with ice cold eyes.

"Um, you mean the thing with the freaks and the-"

"That's enough for now, don't you think Jack." Caine had walked over and put his arm around Jack. He shook him and squeezed Jacks arm just enough so Jack knew he wasn't joking. It hadn't been a question. It had been a threat.

"Um, yes. Yeah. Sorry Caine... I thought she knew..." Jack stuttered, looking back to his phone.

"Knew what?! Could somebody please tell me what the fuck is going on right now?" Diana was standing up now, looking wildly around. Caine released Jack and made his way over to a seething Diana. Caine brought his hand up to rest it on Diana's arm. Jack and Drake clearly saw Diana stiffen to Caine's touch but didn't make a comment.

"It's nothing Diana. Don't worry about it. It's just something to do with Gale and a few other freaks-"

At the mention of Gale's name Diana jerked away, her face twisting. "Really Caine? I thought you were done with her. Why can't you just leave the girl alone?"

"I can't. You know I can't." Caine took a step towards Diana but she backed up two, to widen the space in between them. Drake stiffed a snicker. Caine sighed and ran his hands through his hair, turning away from everybody. "It has to happen," it sounded more like he was talking to himself other than the other kids. "There just isn't anything else. I need to." Caine whipped around with a charming smile on his lips. It would fool most people but Diana knew that this was not good. "If you will excuse me comrades, I have to go and get ready for tonight." Caine started walking out the door when Diana's question made him whirl back to face them, still masked with his fake smile.

"Get ready for what?" she spat.

"The party of course! You're all invited." Caine brought his arms up in a welcoming gesture. "It's going to be a blast."

"Why do you have to get ready? Can't you make your cronies set up for you?"

"Tsk tsk, Diana, always so cynical. If you all must know, I have to get ready for my 'Date'." When Caine said date he brought up two fingers from both hands and made a set of air quotes. "Gale's one lucky girl," Caine winked at Drake as he saw the boys shark grin flash.

All of a sudden Caine's face stung and his entire body twisted to the right. He looked up and saw Diana standing above him, hand still held in the air. Caine brought his hand up and touched his soar cheek. He tool his thumb and brushed it across his lower lip to wipe the saliva from it that had been dislodged from the slap. Caine stood up straight and looked at Diana dead on.

At first all Diana could see were dark brown pits of fury but then they lit up and Caine smirked. "Look who's the bad guy now."

"You're an asshole Caine. I can not believe you're still playing this girl." Diana stalked out of the room leaving Jack staring at Caine and Drake laughing so hard his sides were cramping.

At the memory, Caine brought his hand up to his cheek again. He knew that it was still red but at least he hadn't got a black eye. Damn, that girl can hit, he thought. Caine had to mentally shake himself to get his mind off of the beautiful girl. "Turn the music up!" Caine yelled and in a few seconds he couldn't hear himself at all.

Caine kept his eyes on the door to see if the girl he was waiting for showed up. He had already had to fend off four girls trying to get him to play spin the bottle or seven minutes in heaven. Caine was so uninterested in doing those things he couldn't put it into words. But instead of laughing in the girl's faces he kindly said that he was waiting for someone to show up and that if he was still invited, he'd love to join them once his friend got there.

"Hey boss." Kyle, a kid a year younger than Caine walked up to him and offered him a red plastic cup. "Drake made the punch and I thought you might like some." It's cute when kids try to suck up to me, Caine thought smiling and accepting the drink. As soon as the liquid touched his lips it started burning. Caine was about to recoil but he remembered that people were watching him and he needed to appear grown up. Caine took a big gulp and licked his lips, smiling as the burn became more of a pleasant warmth.

As Caine brought the cup up to his mouth again, someone coming in the door caught his eye. She was wearing black T-strap heels that elongated her already long legs. A pair of black nylons that had the perfect amount of transparency. A maroon mid-thigh length skirt that started and ended with a black, silk ribbon, that rested above the girls hips to highlight the thinness of her waist. A tight, back, shirt who's sleeves stopped about three-quarters down her arms. Her neck looked deliciously bare and her hair was pulled off of her back into a low messy bun that was coming apart and had little pieces of hair water-falling out of the formation. Red lips, lined cat eyes, and full eyelashes completed the look of the girl who was suddenly earning everyone's attention. Out of the corner of his eye, Caine could see a few boys move their hands and cups down to cover a part of them selves that recognized how beautiful the girl in front of them was. "Diana?"

She heard Caine's voice from the crowd and looked straight at him. Their gaze held for a second and Caine felt her eyes go through his bones and heart and lungs and blood. He knew in that moment, that second of intimacy from across the room that her would do anything to protect this girl. Anything in the world just to remain this close to her. This distance of three meters between them felt like nothing and everyone around them disappeared. Not literally, of course. Well, Bug literally did disappear.

At that precise and beautiful moment, another girl strolled in behind Her. This new girl was the opposite of Diana. As she walked her legs wobbled back and forth on hot pink, five inch, high heels. Her legs had nicks and scraped every foot up her legs for inexperienced shaving. Every second step she had to pull down her electric blue skirt that rode up as her legs moved. She caught it just before it flipped up and revealed what she was wearing underneath it, presumably something small and lacy. Her shirt was painful to look at. She was already thin but her shirt was so tight that it clung to her bone and made all her flesh and muscles squeeze out so she had roles at all of the seams. You could see the blood in her arms forcefully pumping; trying to deliver itself to her fingers. The shirt itself had a tribal pint across it make of horrible clashing greens and pinks that, after staring at for too long, made you see double. Her neck clanged like it was adored with twenty beer cans, which in reality, wouldn't been classier that what was really there. What was hanging around her neck were chains loaded with plastic jewels and profanity and stupid charms that five year old's would collect from vending machines. There was a line under her chin where the colour of her skin changed dramatically. From white to an orangish colour that was anything but natural. Her lips were visually sticky and the pink colour went too far up and too far down, overlapping into skin that was not part of her lips. Her cheeks were circles of pink that made her look as though she had just been slapped. Her eye were outlined in a way that made Caine think of a child attaching their parents eyes with a sharpie.

The new girl scanned the crowd and found Caine in a second. "Caine! Babe!"

The girl barged past Diana and smashed into her with her hip so she was knocked into the door frame, gripping it to keep herself standing up. All around her, boys started to grab Diana's wrists and waist, all blabbering and asking her if she was okay. Diana just kept her eyes on Caine.

The other girl ran over as best she could with her ankles almost breaking with every step. One close enough to him, Gale fell into Caine and engulfed him into an awkward hug. Her arms were too short and didn't hang around his neck properly while Caine tried to hug her back. His arms were too long and he felt as thought if he squeezed she would snap. That image was strangely appealing to Caine. When she had fallen onto him Caine had gasped slightly out of shock and choked on the revolting odor that was her perfume. He refused to breath until she had left his arms.

Caine put on his fake smile and said with as much charm as he could muster, "Hey Gale. Glad you showed."

Gale grabbed his hand and started blabbing. "Glad I showed?! I wouldn't miss this for anything. I'm just so happy that you invited me here! This is just going to be so great. Oh, did you get me a drink?" She snatched Caine's cup before waiting for a reply and started to gulp the liquid down. As she was talking Caine had noticed that her tooth was smudged with pink gook.

Gale was pretty. She wasn't great or anything close to hat Caine had his eye on, but she was pretty. Usually. With her distorted mask of mascara and eye shadow she looked like a doll who's face had been help over a lit candle. She was just a kid trying way (way) too much.

"You look... stunning." Caine stuttered trying to find a word that wasn't a lie. Gale was blushing under the blush circles and Caine was reminded just how much makeup she was wearing. "This is going to be great."

"Super duper!" Gale screeched.

Super duper, Caine thought.
