File 1: Evil Spirits All Over!? Part 7

~A nightingale in a Golden Cage
That's me Locked up inside Reality's Maze
Come Someone Make my heavy heart Lig~

*beep*

"Whoever the hell this is, you had better have a goddamn emergency on par with someone dying or I'll be rectifying that by making damn sure someone is dying of blood loss."

Voice husky from just waking up thanks to her ringtone, Sion growled into the phone, not even looking at the caller id. Not that it would have made a difference, as everyone she knew and current clients had a personalized ringtone, making it easy to know if she could be rude and ignore the phone or not.

It didn't help that she was completely exhausted despite having been sleeping since she returned from dropping workaholics one and two at the school. That had been over ten hours ago. Hopefully, whenever she was given the opportunity to find her own place, things would improve.

Chris liked to say that she was always exhausted so she couldn't blame her annoyance on her sleeping habits. His opinion mattered as much as mud to the photographer though so she choose to ignore those types of comments.

"If it isn't my favorite demon eyed sleepy head."

"… I'm hanging up now." She did not want to deal with this.

"WaitWaitWaitWait! I do have an important reason for calling you. I do have more important things to take care of in my life to not have the time to waste in finding a disposable phone so you can't block my call. Chris had me pick up your meds."

…Was peace of mind worth losing sanity in dealing with this male?

"Also, Chris made me your official caretaker while you're staying here."

Was it just because of her exhausted mind, or was there a maniacal laughter echoing throughout the background with the bastard's voice?

"Hell fucking no. I'd rather walk in a crowd wearing a miniskirt and tank top than have you around being my glorified babysitter."

It was amazing how such horrific news was as sobering and mind waking as five cups of black coffee. Anyone would feel shame at the idea of being watched over by someone with the mentality of a grade school boy who set eraser-on-door traps yet possessed a medical degree to prove that he did have smarts and knew how to use them.

"My mentor in the art of pissing-you-off-and-living thought you'd say that. To quote the master," a cough sounded over the phone and a deeper voice came through, "Mother misses you."

An icy shiver ran down her spine. Sion understood the threat all too well. Just how long was this going to be held over her head? Until she married and someone else claimed guardianship over her?

Nightmarish thought.

"And just how close does this relationship require to be?"

Anyone with commonsense could feel the smugness over the phone. Sion couldn't believe she was having to give the win to the manchild. Her personal word for Ivar Reynolds as he had the age of an adult male but the appearance of an older teenager and mental maturity of a male child.

"Well, we'll have to live together obviously. Someone needs to make sure you don't do something stupid like sleep for a week or murder any well-meaning neighbors wherever you decide to live. Just think of me as a handsome talking pet cat, self-sufficient yet there for any comforting needed."

She was not going to touch on that last comment.

"Where can I pick up my prescription?"

"Oh, I'm at the school parking lot. You do still have a job here and the principal needed someone to reach you for some meeting one of the ghost busters set up so I happily volunteered for the task. Not everyone understands your adorable charms after all and might take offense to your bedside manners."

Whoever is in power over the world, please strike this poor soul down and grant her eternal rest.

…damn superior beings.

"Fine, whatever. I'll be there soon."

"Try not to murder anyone on the way."

Sion didn't even bother replying, ending the call with no guilt whatsoever. Not that Ivar would be offended.

A small sigh of exhaustion escaped Sion's lips. As she entered the room's bathroom, she couldn't help but wonder how much makeup would be needed to hide the growing marks beneath her eyes.

-GH-

Mai honestly couldn't believe yesterday happened. She hadn't seen Naru or Sion-san since they disappeared after the whole incident with Kuroda-san being injured by the glass. She had stayed behind, hoping they'd return but they hadn't. Instead, another failed exorcism had been performed and yet again, it was like something had attacked them. Mai still couldn't believe that she had not been seriously hurt by the falling bookshelf.

Mai shoved the memory of dream Naru to the dark corners of her mind. Just thinking about it in a clinical sense had the school girl turning red in the cheeks.

As she entered classroom 1-F, Mai exchanged a good morning with one of her female classmates who was leaving the room.

"Taniyama-san." Looking over towards the call, Mai saw Kuroda walking towards her, a small look of concern on the glasses-wearing girl.

"Good morning, Kuroda-san." Despite the girl's constant claiming of the spirit in the old school house unnerving Mai a bit, that wasn't any excuse to be rude. Especially with what had been happening the last few days.

"Are you okay? Any injuries?"

Mai shook her head, slightly waving her hands, dismissing the idea of her being injured.

"Oh no. It's nothing. Sorry if I made you worry."

After assuring her health was fine, Mai continued walking over to her friends who were currently crowded around Keiko's desk.

It was Michiru who first noticed the fourth member of their group approaching and what they had been just talking about.

"So, Mai! I heard you guys had a heck of a day!"

Mai could almost see dog ears perked up on the curious trio's heads.

"How do you know that?" Sure she would have talked about it with them, but how could they have found out?

"Kuroda-san. She's been bragging about it to everyone." Michiru pointed over to where Kuroda was surrounded by classmates, her animated expression as she spoke giving no misinterpretations as to what she was talking about.

Mai couldn't believe that she would be so happy to discuss what happened. Wouldn't someone who had been showered with pieces of glass be a little nervous recalling such events? Or was this because Kuroda-san truly was psychic and things like breaking glass was nothing to the others horrors she could witness?

Mai couldn't decide whether Kuroda-san was just brave or this was how she coped.

It was Yuuri who snapped Mai back to the current events.

"Anyway, we were shocked. Then all of the sudden, we received a phone call from Shibuya-san." Yuuri didn't even try to hide the glee in her voice.

Mai couldn't believe what she had just heard.

"What!? When?"

All three girls flinched at the sound Mai's hands made when they slammed down on Keiko's desk in outrage.

"Last night." Keiko glanced over at Yuuri and Michiru who both nodded in agreement to her statement. "You mean you didn't know about it?"

They had been sure that Shibuya-san had gotten their contact information from Mai. Apparently they were wrong.

"No…Naru's been missing since yesterday. Sion-san as well." Of course, Sion-san was most likely off sleeping somewhere from what Mai knew of the older woman. The photographer never hid her disdain for being there. Naru was another matter though. He was actually actively working to solve this case and missing meant he wasn't doing his job and the teenager was too much of a narcissist to leave a job incomplete. Mai would bet money (not that she had much) on it.

"Ah…" Keiko paused as she thought back to the phone call, "Well, a few things…about the old building and about you…" she raised a finger for each topic she remembered.

"Oh! And he also asked about Kuroda-san." Michiru pitched in.

Mai couldn't believe that jerk! He could have at least left a message for them saying he was all right! She had a strong urge to slap the boy. Sadly, Mai knew that it wasn't smart to anger the person you owed lots of money too and already injured one of their assoiciates.

Just remembering the cold look on that man's face when she had offered help caused a shiver to run down Mai's back.

As if the shiver was an omen, a teacher entered the classroom and called out.

"Kuroda. Taniyama. Come to the principal's office immediately."

What was going on now?

-GH-

Both girls paused before the Principal's door. It was Mai who knocked and annouched their arrival.

"Excuse me…" Mai began as she peeked inside. The sight of Naru though had her pausing. As she and Kuroda entered, she got the full view of the room. Everyone else but Sion-san were here. Just what was going on here? Even Masako was here, the medium looking good for someone who fell from the second floor.

The Principal motioned to two of the three empty chairs. "Please sit down."

As both girls sat down, the Principal glanced around. "So we are only waiting on Hunter-san. I've been assured that she is aware of this meeting and is on her way."

"Yep. SiSi wouldn't dare ignore my call. Ah, you don't know how easy it is to deal with her when you know just the right buttons to push."

There had been no warning whatsoever. No one had heard the door open and close. Eyes turned to see a shocking figure leaning against the door.

Naru?

Mai looked from the Naru standing by the Principal's desk and the Naru leaning against the door. Or rather, the male who looked almost exactly like Naru….or did Naru look like this guy….

….Mai's head was starting to hurt.

Bou-san had no problem exclaiming his shock.

"What the hell?! Who are you?!"

A grin appeared on the look-a-likes face. "Ah, I see why you would be confused." Eyes filled with mirth looked over at the silent ghost hunter.

"I looked over who had been hired on this case and saw that we looked similar to each other, but it is still uncanny how alike we are in appearance."

It was when the look-a-like ran a hand through his hair that Mai saw the main difference in the two males' appearance. This Naru had a single white strip of hair in his bangs.

"Name's Ivar Reynolds. I'm SiSi's babysitter."

Before that comment could be fully processed, the door suddenly swung open and slammed into the male's back, knocking him to the ground.

Sion stood in the doorway, eyes passing over the group staring towards her and pain currently pulling itself from the ground. She didn't even blink as she walked towards the empty chair, kicking the male in the knees, knocking him back to the ground.

"Dogs should stay quiet and out of sight. Otherwise they find themselves taken to the vet and fixed."

Mai couldn't believe what she had just witnessed. The Naru twin just picked himself off the ground, grinning as he walked over behind Sion-san.

As if nothing had happened, the Principal smiled at the woman.

"Thank you for coming, Hunter-san. I'm aware that this is an inconvenience and you will be properly compensated for your time."

Ayako muttered under her breath. "And this isn't for the rest of us?"

Naru spared one last glance at his copy, who was grinning down at Sion who seemed determined to ignore his presence, before returning to the matter at hand.

"Now everyone who was involved in the incident is here." Walking to the window, Naru closed the curtain. "One moment please."

Returning to the desk, Naru turned on the light residing on the wood furniture.

Almost entranced by the light, eyes immediately glanced at the ever dimming and brightening light. "Please focus on the light."

Keeping his voice soft, Naru began the test.

Breath please, with the light.

Mai almost couldn't help but feel slightly drowsy. Her vision seemed to be completely focused on the light. It was like she had tunnel vision and nothing else was worth focusing on.

"Slowly…."

She could hear Naru's voice, but it was like she was listening inside a tunnel, the voice possessing an echo.

"Relax…."

She could barely make out what Naru was saying. She knew he was saying something, but now, it was like she was under water. What was he saying? Why was she so tired?

"Tonight, something is going to happen."

Happen? Did it matter? It was so calm, what did she have to sorry about? It was so peaceful.

"The chair on the second floor in the old building."

Chair? Why would she have to think about that?"

"The chair is going to move…"

Move…chair…

"Tonight, that chair is placed in the lab in the building…"

Lab….chair….

Suddenly, it was like she had woken up. Light filled Mai's vision, snapping her out of whatever she had been under.

"Very good. Thank you, everyone."

Like a moth to the flame, Mai couldn't help but focus on the chair Naru was resting his hand on.

The chair was important…why?

-GH-

Sion was tired…not that that was anything new. She was always tired. If the damn brat had wanted to induce sleep, couldn't she have just stayed in bed and slept? Damn cocky brat. Plus, where was his adult personality clone?

She had to use personality clone as the moniker as the damn physical clone was currently grinning right behind her.

Ignoring the rest of the group, Sion immediately stood and left, Ivar right on her tail.

"So, SiSi, you're looking well. Your eyes don't look so much like a panda anymore. Though as to how much is well placed make-up is anyone's guess."

She didn't even bother talking back. Honestly, Sion just wanted to take her meds and with that thought, she just reached a hand back, palm up. A silent demand that both parties knew needed no mention.

"SiSi, you need to be careful. You've been taking more lately. I've been going over your medical history for the past three years. Your refill history tells me you've been taking more than the recommended dose too many times."

A bottle was placed in the woman's hand. Immediately, the bottle was opened and three pills were tossed in her mouth, swallowed dry.

"Sion."

The sudden seriousness in Ivar's voice had her pausing.

"You have to be careful. That drug is strong. You could severely damage your body. Your either getting addicted or your body is developing an immunity to the drug. Since you go long periods without, my money is on the latter. You can't just increase the dosage. There are alternatives that could help just as much."

….Sion didn't want to deal with this. Not now, not ever. Call her a coward (and get punched in the face) but she never wanted to have to face alternatives besides the drugs. Not taking them meant feeling. Feeling meant facing things better off left alone.

"Just do your job, Ivar. That's what you're here for. Everything else is pointless to discuss."

With that said, she left the building, Ivar remaining in the hallway, eyes following the woman's back.

This case is almost done. There will be either one or two more chapters for this case, so they will be long ones. Ivar appears. He is, like Chris, a small character, Sion's Yasu in a way, though Ivar is not taking our beloved Naru bodydouble's place. He has his own significance which is involved in Sion's history.
