Ya, know, I was feeling a little frisky today and decided to post yet another chapter for Sweets over the span of 24 hours! Wow! But, the catch is that I've done none of my homework. The things I do for you guys! I'd like to thank Guest and QueenMadz for the super sweet (ha, you get my pun?!) reviews and I keep updating this story as soon as possible. I want to see where I can take this. Anyway, enough with the chitchat, here's Sweets Chapter 7!
Neither of them could believe it. Jace was still in shock, and Clary in denial. He remembered it like it was yesterday.
Flashback
Eyeing the clock, the teenagers waiting until it was 6:00 on the dot. "Hurry, hurry. Sign in!" their mothers urged.
As both of their screens were loading Jace and Clary let out dual breaths.
That's when they saw it…
Dear Clarissa Fairchild, we're sorry to inform you that your application into Harvard has been rejected…
Dear Jonathan Herondale, we're sorry to inform you that your application into Yale has been rejected…
End of Flashback
That night and all the way through Sunday, Clary mostly stayed her bed. When she wasn't , she'd be doing the most basic things to survive. Like eating, breathing, and drinking, but even that was a struggle. She felt as if someone had stabbed her in the back and was slowly letting out the blood so she could suffer.
Jace was no better. Everything he did was on autopilot. But, Celine took this news the hardest. Every few minutes, he'd see her calling Yale's admissions committee complaining that they didn't thoroughly read his application.
At some point, Jace had enough and disconnected the landline from the wall. The caught his mother by surprise as she looked over at him with raised brows.
"Jace, what are you doing?" this was the first time she'd said anything to him since he was rejected. Her voice sounded hoarse with grief and lack of sleep. Jace was crushed, but it seemed to hit Celine even harder for some reason.
"Mom, just stop," he said, his voice tight. If Celine didn't know any better, she'd think her son was angry with her by the way his jaw was clenched. Maybe he was.
Celine didn't seem to be listening to him. "You know what, we'll fly out there first thing tomorrow morning for another in-person interview?" She straightened her already-neat hair out of habit.
"They've made up their minds!" he said in a low voice. "They saw my application and it wasn't good enough. End of story. Sometimes you lose," Jace yelled, quoting Tessa.
Celine let out a breathy laugh, putting a small hand to her chest. "Lose? Lose? Do you hear yourself right now?"
Jace interrupted her mid-rant, "Mom, I think you need to start considering a world where I don't go to Yale."
"This is your future, Jace," she pointed a sharp nail at him. "I'm going to need you to take this a little more seriously." She began walking away, but he grabbed her arm.
Jace's curled his lowered hand into a fist. "You don't think I know that? Do you know how much time I've spent trying to get in?" As he continued, his movements became more jerky. "How many classes I've taken? How many nights I've gotten little to no sleep?"
"I want it bad!" he stammered. "But so what?" This caught his mother's attention as she turned to look at him, her eyes glassy with emotion.
"Will I not have a future if I don't go to Yale?"
"Not a bright a future," she said with a sigh of irritation, confirming his suspicions.
He scoffed bitterly, "Wow! So it's all bullshit?" Jace crossed his arms. "You give out college scholarships to kids who can't afford it, and they're not going to Yale or Harvard, so you send them to public school! Why do you it if it's such a waste?"
"Because they have nothing!" Celine burst out. "We give them something to hold onto! You...Jace...you come from everything."
"And you expect everything."
"Yale made it possible so that a girl like me - who comes from nothing - can make something of herself!" Every word she said to a point.
"So it's Yale or nothing," he sighed, crossing his arms. Honestly, he was done with his mother and her antics. Didn't she get it?
Celine shook her head. "Then what are you saying mom?" It was a rhetorical question. There was a long pause, and his mother kept opening and closing her mouth as though she were about to say something. But, her son beat her to the chase.
"Yeah, that's what I thought." Jace swiftly turned on his heel and went to his car to see Tessa.
~.o.0.o.~
As Clary pulled her beat-up car in front of the school, she took a few seconds to calm her racing heart. Why are you being so jittery? she asked herself. There's nothing to be nervous about, I've already been rejected and it's time to consider other options for college.
She stepped inside, her sneakers squeaking on the hardwood floors to Tessa's office but stopped when she saw Jace already there, his blond head bobbing up and down to the music he was listening to. Sitting down next to him, she pulled out her sketchbook to keep herself busy. Whenever she was anxious or stressed, sketching always calmed her down.
Jace looked over to see her drawing a tree. The rather large tree sitting out in front of the school. He forgot how long he was watching her before he noticed she was staring at him inquisitively and her lips tight. His grin made her blush and she continued drawing, but now with an audience.
They were both so focused that they didn't notice that one of the faculty members had strode over to them and was towering above them with a grave expression plastered on their face. "Are you kids waiting for Tessa?"
Jace nodded. "We'll I'm sorry to tell you but she got into an accident last night and didn't make it."
Clary looked up at this, "No, Tessa with the candy." The teacher shook his head gravely. "I'm sorry to tell you guys. I'm on my way to tell the rest of the students right now."
She waited until the man had left before she broke down. Sobs wracked her entire body and she clung onto the wall with all her might. She'd never felt this kind of emotion since her dad died. Saltwater dripped down her face in fat drops and before she knew it, her head was resting on Jace's shoulder. It surprised the both of them, but she kept on crying.
At some point, Jace's hand was playing with her scarlet hair and she'd buried her head in his strong chest. It took her a few minutes, but she composed herself, wiped her eyes (and the snot underneath her nose), and stood up. Brushing invisible grains of dust off her pant legs, she reached for the blond beside her.
He gladly took her hand he led her out to her car. Clary reassured him that she'd be able to drive but Jace insisted and drove her back home. Telling her that he'd pick up his car later. They sat in her car for a few minutes before she invited him inside and he politely declined. The pair automatically knew that tomorrow would be the funeral and tried to mentally prepared themselves.
Thanks y'all for reading. Wait, why did I say y'all. I'm from California not Texas. Anywho, please review XD
