Chapter Seven
The constant beeping noise was really annoying and was disturbing her sleep.
Nora tried to roll over only stopping when she felt something tug on her hand. Her eyes snapped open and for a couple of seconds the light was too bright for her. She slowly opened her eyes and looked at her surroundings.
She didn't know how she had gotten there. One moment she was walking and the next she was in a hospital room. Looking down she noticed the IV in her hand and another hand resting on top of her right one. Seeing Colette there surprised her since she hadn't acted like her mother in a long while.
Seeing Colette asleep in the chair next to her bed, in what had to be an uncomfortable position, made Nora feel something she hadn't felt in a long time when it came to her mother. Nora didn't know how to explain the feeling but it made her see a possibility that Colette could still redeem herself and be the mother she could be.
Her being here had to mean that she had the motherly instincts in her. Colette just chose to ignore those instincts for her lifestyle.
Nora tried to sit up without disturbing Colette's sleep but her attempts failed. As soon as she had moved up a little and Colette's hand slipped of hers and onto the bed. She jolted awake and sat up.
"Don't you scare me like that again," Colette said before enveloping Nora into a hug.
"When did you start caring about what happened to me?" Nora blurted out.
Colette sighed and leaned back into the chair. "No matter what you may think. I am still your mother and I do love you."
"You haven't been there for me as a mother in a very long time. So I may be somewhat skeptical to this whole change of heart."
"I thought I had lost you Mitchie," Colette said, calling her by the nickname she hadn't heard in a very long time. Which just so happened to be her parent's shortened version of her middle name, Michelle.
"Why did you think that?" Nora questioned, although she herself felt the same way.
"After the hospital called. I was expecting the worst when they told me to come down here," Colette sighed.
"How did they know where to call? I didn't have any identification on me."
"When you didn't come home. I called Barosky and he called in a few favors. When you came in they called since you fit the description."
Nora didn't know what to say.
Knowing that she was in a hospital only reminded her of what she had endured the past days or weeks. The days had jumbled together. With that knowledge, tears sprang into her eyes.
Before she knew it she was sobbing into Colette's shoulder, while she mumbled sweet nothings and assurances that everything was fine.
It was then that Nora sobbed out what had happened to her. She felt Colette tense and the hand running through her hair freeze, before she relaxed and resumed comforting her. All the while Nora had not been able to stop sobbing. She was finally letting out the tears she had been keeping at bay, not wanting to show him just how weak and helpless he had made her feel.
Now she didn't have to worry, she could finally let those tears out.
Days later, Jax was sitting in Barosky's trying to focus on what was being said. However, that was proving to be rather difficult with Colette sitting there.
The guilt he felt over what had happened to Nora was eating him away and he had to use all his will power to not to blurt out that it was his fault that Nora was dead.
He knew that Nora's relationship with her mother hadn't been great but Colette didn't look as if she were grieving the loss of her daughter. She looked somber but she didn't seem distraught like a mother, whose grieving the loss of a child should be.
The conversation stopped as someone's phone went off. They looked at each other, after checking their phones, to see whose phone had disrupted their meeting.
Colette muttered a quick apology as she stepped outside.
"Heard about what happened to Colette's daughter," Nero said as he broke the silence that had descended upon them as Colette stepped outside.
"Yeah. Such a shame that happened to Nora. She was the type of girl who minded her own business and never messed with anyone," Barosky said as he stared out the window.
"They catch the guy who did it?"
Barosky shook his head.
"His time to pay for what he did will come ese. He won't be able to hide forever. No man should be free to walk around after doing something like that."
Listening to the conversation only deepened the guilt he already felt. He was about to come clean about what he knew when Barosky spoke again.
"All that matters right now is that Nora is alive. Shit could have happened differently."
Jax felt the guilt fade away and replaced with relief because Nora was alive. He didn't know how but he found out that he didn't really care because he didn't have to deal with the guilt of having her death on his shoulders.
The conversation cut off when Colette walked back inside.
"I'm sorry but I really have to go," Colette said as she gathered her stuff.
"Don't worry about it. We were finished anyway," Barosky said as Nero nodded in agreement.
Colette nodded and began to walk away but Barosky stopped her.
"Let me know what the doctors say and if I can help."
Colette nodded before walking out.
Nora was sitting on the exam table, awaiting the results of the blood test that they had ordered during her stay, wringing her hands.
"Everything's going to be fine," Colette said as she comforted a nervous Nora.
Any response Nora was about to say died in her throat as she heard a knock on the door before the doctor walked in with her chart.
"All the tests came back negative," she said as she flipped through her chart. "That is all except for one."
Nora felt her heart start to race as she nervously wiped her sweating palms on her jeans.
"In any other occasion this would call for a celebration but given how it came to be," Doctor Green paused. "I'm sorry Nora but you're pregnant."
Nora felt her world come crashing down.
"It's early in the pregnancy so you have options Nora. You can choose to get an abortion," Doctor Green somberly informed her. "This is something that you should think thoroughly before making a decision. Only you know how you feel and only you can make the decision on what happens next."
"I'll be here for you no matter what you choose," Collette reassured her as she squeezed her shoulders.
Nora didn't know if she could be comforted after hearing the news. She didn't even hear anything that was said after. All she kept hear was you're pregnant over and over again.
What do you think Jax will do now that he knows Nora isn't dead? What about what's going to happen with Nora? What do you think she should do? Would you guys like her to keep the baby?
