Chapter 7: Diagon Alley

Albus Dumbledore flooed back to his office with a smile on his face. He had managed to get several new allies from many wizarding governments. France, Bulgaria, Germany, Australia, Russia, and Belgium along with schools like Castelobruxo, Drumstang, and Beauxbatons had joined his cause.

But those damned Yanks refused to be apart of his plans. They had a lot of power in regards to magic and politics.

All well, at least he now had the power of four schools at his disposal.

He couldn't help but walk with a spring in his step. Now he had even more pieces on the side of his chess board. He just needed his most powerful piece to be ready for when he needed him.

Walking out of his office, he popped another lemon drop in his mouth. He decided it was best to greet the students and teachers in the great hall. It was suppertime, and he had no doubt that Minerva would be glad he was back so she didn't have to act as headmistress anymore.

As he walked by, he noticed that most students that he passed by were looking at him strangely. Like he was going to do something to them.

He walked by a group of first year Hufflepuffs and smiled genially at them, only to receive weak and nervous waves.

He frowned at the reaction. Did something happen while he was away. He hoped that nobody was hurt while he was out at the meeting. The Hogwarts council would be on his tail again if a students got hurt.

After passing by more students, who all acted strangely, he walked to the great hall and decided a grand entrance would suffice for his return.

Pushing open the mighty door, he cast a silent sonorous charm and walked into the giant cafeteria. "Hello students of Hogwarts! It's nice to be back at this wonderful school once more. I hope none of you are too upset with my absence, but I had to visit with some very important people while I was away."

After the echo for the amplifying charm dimmed down, he was met with silence. The only audible thing was the clinking of silverware onto tables and plates or the occasional whisper.

Now he was extremely confused. Walking up to his chair, he found himself staring at suspicious looks from not only students but his fellow teachers.

Volume began to rebuild in the once loud hall, but not to the same level as it was before. Dumbledore wanted to find out why his presence made everyone so guarded.

After throwing another lemon drop in his mouth, Dumbledore turned to his Deputy Headmistress. "Minerva, did something happen while I was away? Was a students injured? Was there some sort of event that I missed?"

Minerva looked at him with caution. "Do you really not know Albus? It was in all the papers yesterday."

Dumbledore shook his head. While he wanted to brush off the event as unimportant compared to what he achieved this weekend, he needed student support. If the students didn't like or trust him then he could loose his power at Hogwarts, the main support beam in the tower that was his political castle.

Minerva sighed and pulled out a newspaper from the Daily Prophet and tossed it to him.

He looked at the top title and found himself choking on his lemon drop.

Harry Potter Abused?!

He read the whole thing with shock and wide eyes plastered on his face.

How did they find out? Who find out? Where was Harry?

He lost his most important piece, and it needed to be found. "Excuse me Minerva, I'll have to go contract the Daily Prophet about this lie and check on young Harry. This will blow over once I show them how the boy is really being raised." He said genial, hiding his fury with a fake smile.

Stand abruptly, Dumbledore stormed out of the great hall, leaving many students and teachers confused and suspicious about his reaction to the article.

The students began to whisper amongst themselves about their headmaster.

"You see, he's just going to check with the Daily Prophet. I doubt he let a child be hurt."

"Did you see that? He went absolutely bonkers about the article."

"Do you think he actually let Harry Potter's family abuse him?"

"There's no way our professor would let a kid get hurt, especially Harry Potter."

"I'll have to call my mum about this. She'll flip when she hears how Professor Dumbledore reacted to the article."

Minerva didn't like how Albus responded to the article. The calm and collected man she knew disappeared for a quick moment as he read through the evidence regarding Potter's abuse.

He was very frantic about it and seemed to be in quite a hurry to 'talk to the Daily Prophet.' Maybe there was something he was hiding. While she still trusted her headmaster, it wouldn't be the first time that he hid information.

She would have to talk to the rest of her fellow teachers. Perhaps waiting a week to check up on Harry wouldn't do.

-;-;-;-;-;-;-;-;-

Harry was sitting in his hospital bed poking at his dinnertime meal. He wasn't all that hungry, as he had eaten a large lunch and his stomach was still adjusting to 'normal' portions.

He wasn't allowed to leave the hospital, as his right forearm and left shin were not set correctly. The doctors and nurses said that leaving improperly set bones alone could hurt him when he grows up.

He understood why the doctors felt that way. Whenever he had broken bones, Aunt Petunia or Uncle Vernon would never take him to the hospital to get a cast. They didn't want to waste money on the freak. That meant he was usually left with putting wooden splints on them or leaving them exposed, hoping that pain woulnd't flare up while he was doing chores.

"Hello Harry."

Harry looked up to see his teacher standing in the door way with a stack of books in her hands. He smiled at her. "Hello Miss Mayfield. How was school?"

"School went well, but it wasn't the same without you in the classroom." Harry smiled shyly at his teacher's statement.

Miss Mayfield walked up to him and placed the books on the bedside table. "Are those for me?" Harry asked nervously. While he knew that his teacher was not like his family, his instincts made him feel defensive when it came to asking questions. His family didn't like questions.

His teacher simply smiled and looked at him with warmth in her eyes. "Yes Harry. I got these books from the third and fourth year classes, so I hope you enjoy them."

Harry nodded happily, feeling happy about the prospect of reading some new books.

She sat in a nearby chair and became eye level with the much smaller person. She had no look of hatred or anger at any thime she looked at him, it was always a smile that made him feel safe.

Over the weekend, he had come to accept that she cared for him and that her words were not lies. She was one of the first people to truly care for him.

"Oh!" His teacher exclaimed. "I have something for you." Mayfield grabbed the stacks of book and pulled out one.

It was held together with staples and looked like it was made from kids his age. The child curiosity inside him asked why it was so important. "This book is special. All the students wanted to make you a get well gift, so they worked together and made a book for you."

Harry looked at the terribly made book with awe. It was the first time that anyone his age had ever done something this nice. Most kids in Privet Drive just ignored him or would try to bully him like Dudley.

But this was different. The kids in the same class as him actually care enough to make something for him. His eyes began to become a little wet with tears.

Carefully opening up the book, he read through every page. Each one was created by a different student, expressing how they care about him or hoped that he was okay.

He let the tears fall from his eyes. He actually had people that cared about him. Kids his own age that made something so thoughtful.

He held the little book close and didn't let go.

He remained like that until he finally relaxed and looked up to see his teacher was still there with a soft smile on her face. "I knew you would like the book."

Harry wiped the tears from his eyes. "I wanna thank everyone for making this. It means a lot to me." Mayfield gave a downcast look to the small child.

"You have to stay here and get better. I would hate for you to hurt yourself." Harry looked down with sadness at his teacher's words. "But don't worry, I can tell everyone tomorrow at school." Mayfield finished, causing Harry to look up with a smile.

"Thank you Miss Mayfield." He said happily. She smiled at him and turned to the pile of books. Grabbing one out, she handed it to Harry. "Now, how about we do some reading. I know how much you love it."

Harry and Mayfield stayed in his hospital room for several hours by themselves, other than the occasional visit from the nurse or talk with the doctor.

Harry would read the book out loud and Mayfield would help him with any word he couldn't pronounce. It didn't sound too fun, but they found the time spent to be wonderful.

Until there was a knocking at the door.

Getting up from her seat, Mayfield walked over to the door and tried to peer through the hazy glass to see who it was. Based on what she could identify, it was a man.

Opening the door, she found herself looking at a well dressed Daniel Barton, who had a serious expression on his usually casual face. "I need to have a word with you. " He whispered.

Nodding, she turned to look at Harry, who was still reading into his book. "Harry." She called out.

Harry looked up and get a curious head tilt. "Yes Miss Mayfield?"

"I need to speak with this man for a moment. I won't be long, but if you needed me, holler my name." She said cheekily.

Harry smiled and nodded.

Mayfield then walked away alongside Daniel, wondering if something bad had happened.

After they turned the corner, she noticed how there were no people around this part of the hospital. She wondered if Daniel had something to do with it.

Before she could get a word out, Daniel decided to begin his little speech.

"Dumbledore came back to Britain today." Mayfield's eyes widened.

"We need to move quick." Daniel continued. "We have to get Harry to a safer location, preferably a place with anti detection wards so Dumbledore can't find him. Him being in a hospital has him as a sitting duck." Mayfield didn't think that that would go so well. "I doubt that the doctors would allow Harry to leave before his injuries are healed." She said.

Daniel smirked. "I have a solution for both problems." Daniel pushed back the casual outlook and tried to put back on his serious face, failing much to Mayfield's amusement.

"We will also need to take Harry to the Wizarding world to access his vaults and any wills that were left for him. There can be information about caretakers or people that could help us against Dumbledore."

Mayfield felt boxed in. She didn't wan't to expose Harry to his world too soon, as the tiny child was still recovering from his recent release from the hell that was Privet Drive 4.

But then again, if this Albus Dumbledore, who was a political and physical powerhouse, came after Harry, then they would be unable to stop him from hurting Harry even more. They needed a way to fight him on the wizarding board.

It was so hard to find the perfect solution. "*Sigh* This is not how I was expecting this day to go." She stated bluntly.

Daniel couldn't help but chuckle. "Don't worry, it only gets worse." He sarcastically quipped. "And for the record, if you ever want a chance to adopt Harry, then you'll need to get a magical guardian for the boy that will let you do so."

Mayfield wanted desperately to adopt Harry. It sounded selfish, but now she needed Harry in her life. He was an amazing little boy who had a big brain and a bigger heart. He was so sweet and every time he smiled it made her heart melt.

She never wanted to see him hurt, she never did since she first met him. It would explain why she tried to hard to get him away from the Dursleys.

All in all, she couldn't see Harry as anything less than family. She just wanted to make it official.

"When do you need to take Harry to the wizard world?" She asked seriously.

-;-;-;-;-;-;-;-;-

Harry watched as both his teacher and the man she spoke with walked into the room. He wondered what talked about, as Miss Mayfield looked flustered and seemed to not be as happy as she was when she left.

"Harry. This man's name is Daniel Barton, and he is here to tell you something extremely important." Harry nodded and looked to the strange green suited man.

"Hello Harry. I'm here because there is something that you need to know. First off, have strange things happened around you before? Things you can't explain, like plants growing or things turning other colors?"

Harry looked to Miss Mayfield, who gave him a reassuring smile. He looked back to the man and swallowed the lump in his throat. "Yes sir." He said, albeit timidly.

Daniel only smiled at him. "Well, there is a reason for all that..."

In a period of two hours, Daniel went on to explain how Harry was a wizard and everything about his origins. The war, the attack that killed his parents, the scar that made him famous. Everything.

He told Harry about how he was extremely important to the wizarding world and how they saw him as a savior. Daniel explained Hogwarts, blood class, families, the Potter house, and even his vaults.

Harry was starstruck by the information, but that didn't stop the questions, which Daniel explained.

"If I was so important, then why was I sent to my Aunt's house?" He asked sadly.

Daniel looked down at the small boy and placed a hand on Harry's head. "Because there was someone that wanted you hurt. I cannot explain everything right now, but you will have to be careful of who you can trust in the wizarding world."

Harry nodded and turned to his teacher. He noticed how she didn't react too badly about the reveal of the wizarding world. "D-did you know?" He asked hesitantly.

Mayfield gave him a sad smile and walked a little closer to the bedded child. "I did. I found out from Mr Barton a few weeks ago."

Harry curled in on himself and felt like he was in Privet Drive all over again. He was a wizard. A freak. That's why his Aunt and Uncle hurt him. It all made sense.

"Do you think I'm a freak too?" Before Harry could take the words back, they were out of his mouth. He wrapped his arms around his knees and prepared for the attack.

Freaks weren't allowed to ask questions.

But no hit came, only a pair of gentles arms that wrapped around him in a hug. "Harry." He heard his teacher say lovingly. "I never thought you were a freak. I never will. Just because you have magic doesn't mean you are a freak, it only means you are different, and there is nothing wrong with that. Your Aunt and Uncle were too stupid to see that."

Harry let more tears fall from his cheeks. He cried for two reasons: the fact that Miss Mayfield cared so much for him despite him being different and that he ever doubted her.

Daniel watched the scene with a smile on his face. he could already see the mother-son bond that was between the two, and he would make sure that they achieved it if he had anything to say about it.

He let them remain in this position for a few more moments before sadly cutting. "I'm sorry to interrupt, but I need to ask Harry something."

Mayfield removed her arms from around Harry, which he pouted at cutely. Daniel smiled and walked up to Harry and kneeled to be eye level with him. "Harry, would you be alright if I took you somewhere? It's really important, as it would really help me and Miss Mayfield out when it comes time to protect you against the person who wants to hurt you."

Harry looked to his teacher. "Will you be able to come?" Mayfield's smile saddened and she shook her head. "I can't. I'm not a wizard." She placed a hand on his shoulder. "But you can trust Mr Barton here, he'll keep you safe when you go."

Harry still didn't look too sure, but nodded and looked to Daniel curiously. "But how do I leave the hospital? The doctors said I have to wait a few more weeks."

"Well," Daniel began. "That's the magic of, well... magic. Anyway, don't worry, I'll make sure that we have a good time when we go."

Harry smiled a little at the man's cheery attitude. "So..." Harry trailed off "Where are we going?" Harry asked with childish curiosity.

Daniel smirked. "A little place in between the streets."

-;-;-;-;-;-;-;-;-

Albus Dumbledore ran into his office and began to rummage through the nick-knacks and trinkets on and in his desk. He knew he had it somewhere.

After a five minute search, he found his ward monitor, only to find that it was giving a weaker energy. The wards were beginning to crumble.

"So it's true." He said out loud.

This was bad. If the muggle police found out about the abuse then the Dursley's were going to be put in prison. That would not do at all. The wards would go down after a few months of nobody living there. If the house was barren, then there was nothing for the wards to protect and they would fade away. The house needed a family in there.

While he would love nothing more than to get Harry back and put him with the Dursley's, he knew that was not a good move.

The muggle authorities have a much bigger paper trail for confirmed abuse cases than reported, which would make it much harder to cover up the documentation.

The Dursleys would have to be taken from prison, which would be hard by itself if he wanted it to be unnoticed.

The fact that everyone in the wizarding world was doubting him and the media was slandering his name!

Then there was getting Harry. He still has no idea who had the audacity to challenge him and took his golden ticket. He was Albus, Chief of Wizengamot, Supreme Mugwump, Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore, and it would stay that way.

He just needed to come up with a plan, and he knew just who to bring into it.

-:-:-:-:-:-:-

Mayfield and Harry watched in wonder and awe as Mr. Barton got down on the floor on the edge of the doorway and drew on the ground with chalk and paint brushes.

Harry could only guess that the man was doing magic in some way. While he knew he shouldn't watched the man do his work and spy on him, his curiosity wanted to know what was going to happen when Mr. Barton was finished.

Miss Mayfield was intrigued by the strange markings. While she knew how dangerous it could be, she wanted to know the full abilities of what magic could do when it came to helping people.

After about thirty more minutes, Mr. Barton got up from the ground and wiped the sweat off his forehead, looking happy with the result. Then he placed his hand on the end of the long strip of strange symbols and they suddenly glowed for a moment before disappearing from view.

Turning to Miss Mayfield and Harry he smiled. "There! Now those wards will keep people out of his room by confusing them if they walk up to the door or will give the nurses or doctors the idea that they treated Harry earlier."

Mayfield nodded but wanted to know more. "What was that?" She asked curiously. "Symbols that you used looked very strange." Daniel smiled at her curiosity.

"That was rune warding. Using magic and special inks or chalks, you can create special spells that can protect people, inflict pain, seal dangerous objects, etc. The ones I made are meant to confuse people or to make them not notice the door." Mayfield nodded once again. She was amazed that something so small and now invisible could have such an effect on people.

"Did you learn that at the school for wizards?" Harry asked, cutting into the conversation with his own curiosity, not that either adult minded.

"No." Daniel said. "Hogwarts has lost its luster in the past few years. They didn't have that class, only one similar to it called ancient runes. I took to learning warding after graduation because there are clients I sometimes have that need protection, for example, if they have someone else that wants to hurt them." Harry nodded.

"What's a client?" Harry asked cutely, getting both adults to chuckle. While Harry did have a big vocabulary for his age, he still had a lot to learn.

"Harry." Mayfield said with a smile. "A client is someone that another person works for, just like how Mr Barton here works for us. We are his clients."

"So..." Harry started. "You'll protect us?"He asked hopefully. Daniel chuckled and smiled at the adorable child. "Yes. That's my job. I'll make sure that nothing happens to you or Miss Mayfield." Harry smiled up at the much taller man.

"Thanks." He said, joy in his expressive green eyes. "I really like Miss Mayfield." Harry was suddenly enveloped in a warm hug by his favorite teacher. He leaned into the hug wrapped his tiny arms around her, enjoying the comforting feeling.

Daniel smiled. While he wished he could give them more time, he needed to get moving. "Alright. I'm going to take Harry with me so we can check out his bank accounts and fix any problems that they may have." He knew that Dumbledore probably had his hands in the Potter vaults, so that would need to be fixed as soon as possible.

"Wait." Mayfield spoke out, cutting in to his thoughts. "Harry is famous. Everyone will recognize him and I doubt a scarf over his face will be enough."

Daniel looked at the still hugging student and teacher and gave a smirk worthy of a Slytherin. "Don't worry I have a solution for that."

-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-

Harry never wanted to do that again. Mr Barton, or as he asked to be called, Daniel, had them take something called a portkey. It felt like he was sucked though a straw from his stomach and made him feel sick. After that, he almost landed on the hard concrete, had in not been for Daniel grabbing him last second.

Daniel told him the first time was always the hardest. He didn't understand why the man snickered when he said it though.

"What's the Diagon Alley like?" Harry asked.

Daniel placed a hand on his chin. "Well... it's like a street market, but for wizards. I can't really explain it, so you'll have to see it for yourself." He said with a smile.

Harry nodded enthusiastically. While the street they were on didn't look too nice, he wanted to see how amazing the wizarding world was.

Harry and Daniel walked into a dingy bar called 'The Leaky Cauldron' and found themselves surrounded by seedy looking people and strangely clothed individuals.

Walking up to the counter with Daniel, Harry watched as a man with a hunched back and bald head came out from behind the bar. "Hello there, welcome to the Leaky Cauldron. My name is Tom. What can I do for you today?"

Daniel smiled at the strange man. "Hello Tom. I'm just taking my son here through the Alley."

Tom looked down at the small child, who curled in on himself from the strange man's look.

Harry no longer looked like himself. At the hospital, Daniel applied something called a 'glamour' that made him look different. He now had wavy brown hair, brown eyes and lighter skin. Daniel found trouble hiding his scar using magic, so they put makeup on it.

Tom smiled and waved to the small child. "Hello there young one. What's your name?"

Harry looked up hesitantly. "M-My name is Nicolas. Nicolas Barton."

Tom smiled and looked up to Daniel. "Well, I hope you two enjoy your trip. It is a bit late though, so be careful."

Daniel nodded and took Harry's hand. They walked through the courtyard and found themselves at a brick wall, which confused Harry.

"I thought we were going to a market?" Harry asked. Daniel smiled at the small boy. "We are." Daniel then tapped at brick on the wall with his knuckles three times. Harry watched in awe as the wall began to open up, each brick rolling back to open up into a walkway for the two wizards.

As the last bricks moved into place, Harry found himself staring in awe at the amazing view before him, unable to speak. Daniel smirked at the child.

"Well Harry, welcome to Diagon Alley."
