This chapter title was originally inspired by one picture seen of one Tyler Hoechlin with a mustache, dubbed 'Out of Date Mario' by the author. Then we decided it was completely random and changed into the chapter title we have now. Which is slightly more relevant.
A faint gasping sound echoes around the room followed by the rustling of blanket and clothing. Dim sunlight flickers in through the windows, revealing the many dust particles circulating through the air. The loud squeak of the bed followed by the sound of heavy shoes stepping over the wooden floor ends the near silence intoxicating the place. With the sound of even measured strides, Sephiroth strolls across the room to the window, his hair flowing behind him as if it were made of silk. The light reveals a wicked grin on his face as his mind churns with plans that are falling in place perfectly. A small ray of light catches in his bright green eyes, giving them a glowing effect that would make even the toughest warrior shrink away in fear. A deep chuckle rises from his throat, resounding clearly in the confines of the room.
Within the shadows, Kadaj cowers under the blankets, a small whimper escaping from him as he flinches away from Sephiroth's laugh as if the sound of it alone could kill him. Even as Sephiroth stands far away from him, the remnant still shivers in fear. The sensation of Sephiroth's hands on his body as they roamed, seeked, and tortured him lingers on his pale skin. Kadaj no longer feels as if he owns his body, having been violated to the extreme.
"One week…" Sephiroth murmurs darkly with a laugh as he whirls around to face Kadaj. "I give you one week to kill Cloud. If not…"
Kadaj nods faintly, too numb to even comprehend the simplest of words. A mask of disbelief and fear sits frozen on his face as his eyes dart around the room towards every small creak from the wood.
"Understand?" Sephiroth asks harshly having not heard any spoken response from the silver haired boy.
Kadaj nods slowly again, refusing to look up and meet the gaze of the tall man at the window. He flinches away as Sephiroth steps towards him. Sephiroth's shadow looms over Kadaj, creeping up like a silent assassin.
"Do you understand?" Sephiroth repeats with a scowl. "Respond!"
Clutching the blankets closer to him as he burrows deeping within the faint comfort of the cloth, Kadaj nods again. "Y...yes…" he whispers in a barely audible voice.
Sephiroth frowns. "When I speak to you, you will respond. Understood?"
Kadaj nods again. There is a brief silence before Kadaj remembers to respond. "Yes."
"Yes what?"
Yes...sir?"
"...Hmph. I suppose you can say that. The correct phrase is, 'Yes, I understand.' Do you understand?"
"Yes...I...understand…?"
"Better... We will work on your hesitance and obedience later."
Sephiroth leans over him and cups the remnants chin in his hand, giving him a rough yank so that Kadaj stares blankly at his face. His finger brushes softly over Kadaj's partially opened lips, making Kadaj close them tightly as he tries to jerk away from his grasp. The rough leather of Sephiroth's gloves dig into Kadaj's face as the man tightens his grip, squishing the younger boy's cheeks as he does so.
"Obedience…" Sephiroth hisses with a harsh yank. "You will obey. Don't resist. Don't flee. Don't fight back. You will accept it all and obey."
Kadaj wills himself not to flinch as Sephiroth's hand wanders up his arm, leaving goosebumps on the way. He closes his eyes, willing the hand to go away as it nears more sensitive areas. His hands shake as he grips the blanket to prevent his bitten down nails from cutting into his palm. A replay of the last few moments with Sephiroth flashes in his mind, making his senses overflow with panic.
Suddenly, the air around him shimmers, his vision flickering with specks of glowing white lights that dance in the air around him. Sephiroth leaps back, as if shocked by the glowing white orbs. More and more glowing spots join in until most of Kadaj's vision is clouded with them. Through all this, he can see Sephiroth angrily screaming at him, though no sound can be heard. Then, in a blinding flash of light, Sephiroth disappears completely.
Kadaj blinks, clearing away the remaining white dots in his vision. He sits up silently, feeling something unfamiliar under his fingertips. The scent of something calming and sweet floats around him, erasing most of the panic that was there moments ago.
The white dots fade away completely, revealing an endless field that stretches far past the horizon. All around him in this field, except for a lone wooden cabin, pure white flowers are growing, dancing around as a breeze brushes past the leaves and petals of flowers, greeting each one with a cheerful wave before moving on the next flower. The petals of the flowers bend as they welcome the breeze while fallen petals rise and join the wind, dancing through the air as they are liberated of their limited life from the ground, creating a spectacle of immense wonder.
Kadaj reaches up shakily to grab one of the hundreds of free petals flying around him. He opens his palm to reveal a delicately curved pale white petal laying in his palm. Its softness brushes against his skin, making him smile slightly before the wind takes the petal away to join the rest of the petals once again.
Something touches his shoulder gently, startling out of this peaceful state. Kadaj screams, leaping wildly to his feet as he lurches forward. The only thing that flashes in his mind is that Sephiroth is here to get him. He forgets all about the things Sephiroth told him about obedience and dashes off wildly.
His mad dash and his unstable leap to his feet tosses him off balance, making him trip over empty air and fall on his side. Kadaj squeezes his eyes shut and cover his head with his arms as soft footsteps approach him. They come to a rest besides him. Panic overwhelms his mind and throws out any sense of reasoning in him. He lashes out with his arms and legs with a shrill cry.
"Whoa whoa! Calm it, kiddo!" a male voice yelps as he leaps away from Kadaj.
Kadaj immediately stops his assault upon realizing that the voice does not belong to Sephiroth. It is more carefree and less strict, full of the joy and humor that Sephiroth's voice did not have. Cautiously, he cracks open his eyes to find himself staring into the face of a smiling spiky, black-haired man.
"Who are you?" Kadaj asks meekly, pushing himself up to a sitting position.
"Name's Zack Fair." The man replies with a grin.
Kadaj blinks, not knowing what to do with such information.
Zack sighs. "Right...you don't know who I am. Let's just say I'm chocobo butt's best buddy." Kadaj stares at him blankly, nothing making sense to him. Zack sighs once again. "Chocobo butt…also known as Cloud Strife. His hair really looks like a chocobo butt…."
Kadaj finally nods after moments of silence. "So...you're...someone I can trust?"
Zack grins and gives him an overenthusiastic thumbs up. "Yup!
Kadaj finally notices a woman standing behind Zack. She smiles happily with a basket of those beautiful white flowers in her arms. Her soft brown hair swings around in the soft breeze, adding to her a kind and gentle aura. Still smiling, she steps in front of Zack and kneels down next to Kadaj while putting the basket of flowers on the ground next to her.
"I'm Aerith. It's a pleasure to meet you." Aerith grins happily as she helps Kadaj up to his feet. "I'm sure you want to know where you are and how we got here right? And plenty other questions as well. Let's go into the house first and then talk while eating some cookies. Okay?"
Kadaj nods almost as a reflex after having been forced to agree and say yes to whatever Sephiroth commanded or asked of. "Yeah…"
As the three of them make their way through the sea of flowers, Kadaj notices a small sparkling pond of water nearby. Feeling a sense of curiosity and discomfort, he deviates from their path to the house and heads over to the small pond instead.
"Wait! Kadaj! Don't touch that water!" Aerith warns as she walks after Kadaj.
Kadaj crouches down at the edge of the pond, ignoring both Zack and Aerith's shouts of warning now. Cautiously, he peers down at his reflection, watching as it ripples from the wind. He proceeds to remove his glove but finding it not there due to it having been removed by Sephiroth earlier. Slowly he dips his finger into the water. A sudden jolt of stinging pain races up his finger and through his whole hand, making him leap back and clutch his hand to his chest. His eyes widen as he confirms the fact that this is not normal water.
Kadaj falls to his knees, still clutching his hand in his grasp. "This...this water...it's the same as the rain...the pond in the church. It's the healing water…"
Aerith crouches down next to Kadaj, resting both her hands on his shoulders. "I'm so sorry...we tried to warn you."
Kadaj stares at Aerith. "Is the healing water yours?"
Aerith nods. "It heals my allies and it hurts the enemies...but don't think of yourself as an enemy…"
"Then why does it hurt me!?" Kadaj screams, unable to contain the mass of emotions within him. "Why does it consider me an enemy!?" He lashes out angrily at Aerith.
Zack catches Kadaj's hands just before it reaches Aerith. Aerith sits there, not even blinking as Kadaj struggles against Zack's tight grip.
"Let me go!" Kadaj snarls as he lunges towards Aerith.
Zack keeps him in place. "Hey! No hurting her! Otherwise we're sending you back to Sephiroth."
Kadaj freezes and his anger slowly fades away, only to be replaced by fear. "N...no...don't send me back to him!"
Zack pats him on the head gently. "We won't...if you calm down first. Sit down and let Aerith explain…"
Kadaj nods glumly and plops back down on the ground, the fire of anger no longer burning in his eyes. He plucks a flower from the ground and slowly begins ripping the petals off, letting the broken shreds of flower flutter away in the soft breeze.
Aerith takes a deep breath before speaking. "I know you think of yourself as a monster..but I disagree with that…"
"The water doesn't think that." Kadaj objects as he gestures at the sparkling pond.
Aerith holds up her palm. "Let me finish. I think you're not a monster. The water only considers you an enemy because that's what you believe. It's only in your mind. But your mind has persuaded yourself that you are really a monster, enough so that the idea becomes truth itself."
Kadaj lets out a harsh laugh. "Why would I do such a thi-?!"
"Because you feel guilty….guilty for all the lives you've taken and destroyed. Blaming yourself and calling yourself a monster is how you cope with it…"
"That's a lie!"
"No it isn't. And you know it." Aerith sighs. "You remind me so much of Cloud...he too blamed himself when Sephiroth killed me."
"Wait!" Kadaj suddenly interrupts. "Y...you're...dead!?"
Aerith blinks in surprise. "Oh! Oh right! We still haven't told you where you are yet...Would you like us to explain right now or would you rather we go inside the house to explain?"
Kadaj hesitates before looking up at them with a shy look on his face. "Umm...you said earlier that there were cookies...right?"
Zack nods as he licks his lips at the thought of cookies. "Aerith makes the best cookies ever! You must try them."
Kadaj smiles a bit. "Well..then I guess we can go in first…"
Zack lets out a whoop of joy. "Cookies, here I come!"
Aerith laughs as she stands up. "No more cookies for you, puppy! You've eaten enough today." She turns around and holds out a hand to Kadaj, a smile on her face as gestures for Kadaj to stand up and follow them.
Kadaj hesitantly takes her hand and stands up to follow the two of them into the house. The small wood building radiates a warm and welcoming aura, seemingly fitting within this peaceful field of wondrous flowers. Upon entering, a gust of warm air mixed in with the scent of sugary sweet cookies and baked bread envelops them, greeting them with enthusiasm. A small table is placed to the side where Aerith leads Kadaj over to and signals for him to sit first. She walks off and returns moments later with a tray full of sugary golden brown cookies sitting on a plate.
"Take as much as you want." Aerith smiles as she sets the plate down in front of Kadaj's overjoyed face.
Kadaj immediately takes several of them and cram them into his mouth, greedily munching on them as the sweet taste of sugar explodes on his taste buds. In his whole existence, he had never eaten anything as delicious as cookies and upon tasting them, his mind and body only yearns for more.
Aerith laughs happily upon seeing this. "I'm glad you like them."
Zack reaches around Aerith quietly, aiming to grab one of the cookies. Aerith notices immediately and slaps his hand.
"No more cookies! Didn't I tell you that earlier, Zack?" she scolds sternly.
Zack gives Aerith a sad look that resembles a puppy begging for food. "Aww...please! Just one more…."
Aerith attempts to keep on that stern look but fails to do so. "Alright. One more…"
Zack grins and immediately nabs a cookie before she changes her mind.
Kadaj looks up at them as he slowly nibbles on a cookie, wanting to savor the taste for as long as he can. "So...uhhh...you were going to explain…"
Aerith nods. "Yes. Where to start…"
"How about start with where I am…"
"Alright." Aerith takes a seat across from Kadaj. "You're in the Lifestream. People who die go back to the Lifestream where they live in peace for the rest of eternity. Well...most of the time it's peaceful. Right now, the Lifestream happens to be in turmoil, fighting against the taint of Jenova who seeks to invade and control. Usually, people from the living world should not be able to enter the Lifestream. However, Jenova has disrupted that system, which has allowed you to be pulled in here. Luckily, that same reason also allowed us to pull you away from Sephiroth and to this safe area."
Kadaj suddenly pipes up, a hint of panic returning back to his voice. "Wait! Doesn't that mean Sephiroth can pull me out of this safe area and back to him?!"
Aerith shakes her head. "It's not that simple. If he could do that already, Sephiroth would have pulled you back long ago and we would have pulled you away from him long ago as well. It takes lots of effort and time to build up energy from the Lifestream to pull you here. Luckily, there were two of us to do that and pulling someone from somewhere in the Lifestream to somewhere else in the Lifestream is far easier than pulling someone from the living world to the Lifestream. It will take Sephiroth days before he can pull you back into there by force."
Kadaj calms down upon knowing that Sephiroth wouldn't be forcing him there anytime soon again. "Then why can he bring me to that place every time I fall asleep?"
"Well, basically, when you sleep, you soul is sort of just drifting...it makes it easier to latch onto you and pull you away. But whenever you wake up, your soul returns to your being easily. Does that make sense?"
Kadaj nods slowly. "Yeah...I guess…"
Aerith smiles happily. "Great! We got that mostly cleaned up. Now back to the water and the monster situation."
A groan escapes Kadaj's mouth. "Do we have to…" he whines with a grumpy look on his face. "I..I don't want to talk about it…"
Aerith gently leans over and touches Kadaj's shoulder. "You remind me so much of Zack when he doesn't get what he wants right now…" Zack starts protesting in annoyance but Aerith immediately shuts him up. "Yes we do have to talk about this, otherwise you'll never get over it and nothing will get better."
Reluctantly, Kadaj nods as he slumps in the chair. "Fine."
"First of all, you need to forgive yourself. You can't put all the blame on yourself. It's not all your fault."
"But I killed-"
"You've said that many times already. But think about it. Who ordered you to do it?"
"Mother...but I still did it!"
"You didn't know better. She was the only one you could rely on. The only one you could trust at that time. You only wanted her love...and who can blame you for wanting to be loved?"
Kadaj stares at his fingers as he shifts silently. He looks at anywhere but at Aerith. "I...it's still my fault...I'm the one responsible…" he finally whispers in a voice that is barely audible."
Aerith sighs. "Exactly like Cloud. You guys just don't know when to let go and how to forgive. He blamed my death on his inability to protect me. He kept begging for my forgiveness even though I never blamed him. There was nobody to forgive except for himself. But once he learned how to forgive himself and move on, he became capable of protecting his friends better and facing his fears. You can be the same...move on."
Kadaj continues staring at his hand. "But you didn't blame Cloud. The people who died under my hands when I summoned the Bahamut...they and their families blame me for it."
" 'He who trips and falls should not blame his foot'. "
Kadaj sighs but continues to stay silent.
Upon noticing his silence, Zack speaks up. "Sephiroth burned down Nibelheim in rage. He discovered his true origins...and he was overwhelmed with madness. He murdered ruthlessly. His mother wasn't there to instruct him on what to do. He did that himself. You on the other hand, Kadaj...you had only your mother to believe in. I don't think you really had a choice, did you? You didn't think it was wrong back then to murder, but now you know. Sephiroth doesn't think that...that's what makes him a monster...and that's what makes you not a monster…"
Kadaj frowns, a look of deep thinking and conflicting emotions masking his face.
Aerith stands up. "Well...we'll let you think about this for a while. You should talk to Cloud as well...ask him about forgiving himself. He knows best what it's like. You should probably wake up soon. Cloud and Tifa are worrying about you…"
Kadaj nods. "Okay...umm...how do I wake up?"
"Just tell us and we'll send you back over to the world of the living. Releasing you from the Lifestream is way easier than pulling you into it or around it."
Kadaj grabs a few more cookies and eat them before he goes. "I'm ready to go...and...um...er...thank you...uh...for everything…"
Aerith smiles. "You're welcome. May we meet again some other day…"
Zack grins and gives Kadaj a thumbs up. "You'll make it through all this. You may not know it but you've got it in you, kid. Say hi to chocobo butt for me, will ya? And tell him that both his best buddy and Angeal Hewley say that he should not leave our Buster Sword laying on the hill to rust...I gave it to him to use...not to stick it into the ground as a memorial for my death. Even though it's probably been rusted away to a state where it's unusable, at least clean it for us. Jeez...all that rust and dirt really makes it look bad."
Kadaj can't help but to let out a small laugh. "Alright...I'll tell him that."
The beautiful world of white flowers and warm comfort slowly drifts away, fading away with a cloud of white glowing dots in his vision. As he leaves, Aerith's final few words echoes as small whispers in his ear.
It's not your fault…
Kadaj suddenly opens his eyes, finding himself once again lying in the bed...the same bed in which Sephiroth violated him. However, it only takes one quick glance to confirm that he is not in the dream world of the Lifestream. Outside, the world is dark with only the stars, moon, and random lights to brighten the sky. His body aches with the harsh force he exerted on his real body as he had slept, stretching the healing wounds until they almost reopened. Kadaj groans, shifting his head slightly to find Tifa and Cloud.
Cloud stands next to his bed, a choked breath of relief escaping from his throat as he sees that Kadaj is awake. "God damn it...I thought you would never wake up…" Cloud murmurs shakily as he tries to keep his voice steady. "I thought you were a goner…"
Kadaj closes his eyes again. "I'm...sorry…"
"Don't be. Just be glad right now…"
"Where's Tifa?" Kadaj mutters softly as he notices the missing being.
Cloud gestures towards the door. "Out there...she's sending them to bed now…"
"You should go sleep too…"
"Not sleepy...plus...someone needed to watch over you…and...uh...you're kinda in my bed in the first place..."
Kadaj stares at Cloud, an unrecognizable emotion written on his face. "Um...I...uh...thanks?...err...for watching over me…and...um...everything..." Cloud smiles softly in response as he brushes Kadaj's messed up hair from his face. It is only then that Kadaj notices , from the very corner of his vision, something wrong with Cloud's arm. "W...what happened to your arm?"
Cloud looks away and lets out a grimace of pain. "Well. You were screaming and kicking all over the place. So we tried to wake you up...and...you ended up kicking my arm...and...yeah…"
Kadaj bites his lips as he stares at Cloud's broken arm with wide fearful eyes. Silent tears gather in his eyes and a stinging lump of emotion clogs up his throat. He was supposed to kill Cloud. How can he do such a thing when he regrets even giving Cloud a broken arm? "I...I can't...too much...how...I just...make it stop...I don't...want to hurt anyone anymore!" He lets out a scream of anguish, clutching his head as fresh tears slide down the side of his face. "I can't do it...I can't…"
Kadaj whimpers as he fights the onslaught of emotions. He shoves the blankets away and shakily tosses his legs over the side of the bed. His feet touches the cold floor and he stumbles as he puts his weight on them.
Cloud crouches down to help him. "What are you doing?! You're not strong enough to be up and walking yet…"
Kadaj shoves Cloud away with all the force he can muster. His breaths come in short gasps as he uses the bed to support his weight as he stands up. A trickle of red blood snakes its way down his arm as he reopens a healing wound. Using the bed, wall, and any other object as a support he makes his way over to the window.
Leaning against a small table next to the window, he weakly shoves the window open with his elbows. Kadaj leans forward as he stares at the barely visible ground in the dark, a full story and a half below him.
He closes his eyes as he lets thoughts drift around in his brain. He had killed for his mother's love. But remembering his mother's harsh voice and cruel punishments from Sephiroth, he truly doubted that Jenova would really love him. Instead, what seemed more likely was that Cloud and perhaps Tifa would treat him better than his mother and Sephiroth. Upon knowing all this, his actions he did in the past no longer seemed reasonable and now seems cruel. And now, he is forced to hurt people once again, one that he never wishes to hurt again. But, no matter what he does, the only things he seems capable of doing is harm and destroy. Wouldn't it all be better if he was gone, no longer able to hurt anyone else.
Kadaj glances down at the floor once again.
"Do you think I can die from this height…?"
Yazoo yawns as the swaying motion of the helicopter slowly lulls him to sleep. His body is exhausted from everything that had happened within the last couple hours. All he wants to do now is just fall asleep right on the spot. Compared to the frigid outside, the helicopter is nice and warm, a temperature perfect for falling asleep. A few seconds later, Yazoo really falls asleep, sinking into the comfortness of this place.
Loz notices his brother fall asleep and smiles a bit. Yazoo deserves that rest. He continues staring out the window, watching the darkness stretching far away. In his mind, he keeps thinking about Kadaj and whether he will get to see him soon. He also wonders if Yazoo will regain his memory upon seeing their brother. A feeling of relief and hope blossoms in his chest, resulting in tears of joy pooling in his eyes.
"Everything's gonna be all right now...right?" Loz mumbles out loud.
Reno overhears this and turns around to face Loz. "Yup. Now that we're here, you don't hafta worry about anything."
Rude lets out a small cough. "Says the one who got us into this mess."
Reno grows and smacks Rude. "Shuddap…"
Elena smiles from the front. "But now you guys are fine. Tseng's pretty good at flying helicopters, right?"
From the pilot seat, Tseng gives a small silent nod as he continues flying the helicopter in the dark.
"Are we almost there yet? I want to see Kadaj soon…" Loz whines as he peers out the window once again.
Reno points to the window in the front. "You see those lights in the distance. That's Edge...we're almost there…20 minutes top. And if the helicopter crashes now and we live, we can always walk back there..."
"Don't jinx it." Rude warns.
Loz grins in joy. He would have been bouncing up and down in his seat with joy if it wasn't for the fact that he couldn't move his legs. Unable to contain his excitement, he wakes Yazoo up with a whole bunch of hyperactive arm movements.
Yazoo groans with sleepiness as he wakes up, rubbing his eyes as he adjusts to the darkness. "What…?"
Loz points to the lights. "We're almost there! We can see brother soon again!"
Yazoo smiles faintly as he slouches back in his seat. "That's great...now...let me sleep and wake me up when we actually get there…"
"Aww...but Yaz…"
"Good night."
Loz sits there impatiently as twenty minutes slowly tick by. The light grows bigger and brighter until he could tell see the individual small lights within the huge blob of glowing lights. Slowly, the helicopter begins its descent into its designated landing zone. As soon as the helicopter touches down, Loz starts begging the Turks to hurry so he can go see Kadaj.
Reno grins. "Alright. Calm your horses. Lemme get you a wheelchair so we don't have to carry you...I'm sure Boss has some extras…"
Moments later, Reno returns with a wheelchair. Rude, obviously the strongest one here, helps Loz into the wheelchair and pushes him off towards a car. Yazoo still sleeps in the helicopter, unaware of anything around him.
Elena stares at him and pokes Yazoo's shoulder, only resulting in Yazoo grumpily swatting her hand away and falling asleep away. "Umm...hey...we're here…"
Reno stares at Yazoo's sleeping figure. "Meh...let him sleep a bit longer. Let's get the big guy in the car first."
So, they leave Yazoo alone in the helicopter while they deal with Loz, who is a bit hyperactive for being finally here and in anticipation of seeing Kadaj soon.
Yazoo blinks sleepily as he feels someone's hands on his arms, gently pulling him out of the helicopter. He lazily scoots away. "Let me sleep, Loz…"
However, he realizes immediately that something is wrong once the pungent smell of something strangely sweet floods in through his nose. Yazoo opens his eyes immediately, finding a man, his face hidden in the darkness, standing above him with a chloroform cloth in his hand. He opens his mouth to scream but nothing comes out as he slowly sinks into a world of darkness. His body loses all control and goes limp as he once again goes into deep sleep.
Reno frowns as he stares around the helicopter. "Where did he go? Hey! Any of you guys see where he went?"
Rude, Elena, and Tseng look over at him from the car and shake their heads.
Reno looks around again. A strange smell overwhelms him when he nears the spot Yazoo was sleeping, Feeling a bit woozy, he steps back and shakes his head to clear it. That sweet smell…
"Um...yo...guys...I think we've got a problem…"
A/N: Whelp...this turned out longer than I expected...well...the first part with Kadaj did...the second part with Yazoo and Loz ended up shorter than I expected. XD. But all is well...XD. I won't be updating in a week or two due to vacation with no wifi (it sucks and I'll rather stay at home with wifi and internet) XD. So hope you guys enjoy this longer chapter...even though the last part was like written sloppily in half boredom and sleepiness. XD.
Oh...Im not sure whether I want to add in pairings or not. But...please give me some pairings you guys might wanna see in this fanfic and I'll consider them! XD. Just don't be like Byaku and ship everyone with therapy…^^;
(Shipping people with therapy is a perfectly reasonable action)
((You have a point...but still no! XP))
(Everyone should help me and support Kadaj with therapy lol)
((Everyone should help me and support CloudxKadaj XD))
Please review! It makes me happy and smile. XD.
