Treacherous: Chapter Seven

Jade sat on her bed, flipping through her Geometry book with a frustrated expression and several sighs, as if the answer would magically appear. Brown eyes glanced up from their script for a play as Tori watched the clearly confused girl.

"Need some help?" She offered, pushing up her glasses perched on the bridge of her nose.

"I don't understand why math is so goddamn hard! When the hell am I ever going to use this later in life?! I just want to write scripts and direct! Not learn about motherfucking shapes!" Jade huffed, scribbling out the problem she was working on. Tori took a seat on the bed next to her, taking the pencil out of Jade's hand cautiously. "Mind if I try before you explode?"

"I already screwed it up anyway." Jade mumbled, sitting back. Tori scanned over the problem in the book, and the example before it, and figured out the answer in a matter of minutes. She opened up the back of the book, finding the answer to see if it was correct. Sure enough, it matched.

"So you do know what you're doing." Jade commented. "Yeah, math and science are kind of my thing. Want me to explain how I got my answer?" Jade nodded, watching as Tori demonstrated.

The two girls met daily until visiting hours ended. Tori retrieved Jade's assignments with permission from the mental facility, and from Jade's teachers who were happy to provide them to her. Despite Jade's sarcastic and "gankish" attitude, all of Jade's teachers were more than willing to get her back on the right track. So Tori brought the work, and Jade complied.

After a good ten minutes, Jade got through a couple problems with Tori's guidance. Tori liked helping Jade, and was satisfied that Jade was letting her help. "Thanks Vega."

Tori smiled, "No problem Jade. You just have to be a little more patient when it comes to math. Think the entire problem through." She returned to her chair next to the bed.

"Yeah, yeah. Whatcha reading?" Jade asked, slightly curious.

"A script for a play I got the lead for. It's about raising awareness for LGBTQ teens. Hollywood Arts is really into equality lately, they even started a new club. I think it's great, now people can actually express themselves, not only through their talents, but through their sexuality and what they believe in." Tori explained.

Jade listened, surprised Tori was into something like that. "That's pretty cool, what's your role?"

"I'm playing a teen who just came out, but people at her school are extremely homophobic and bully her. She gets really depressed, so she joins a local LGBTQ support group and bonds with people just like her, and eventually meets her girlfriend and learns to stand up to people at school. Kinda cliché but it gets the message across. I mean kids die because they are so afraid to be their real selves because they would be judged and bullied. People need to understand that sexuality doesn't define you."

"Interesting, you're not playing an innocent role this time Vega."

"Yeah, well I guess it would be the perfect way to come out." Tori shrugged, returning to her script.

Jade's eyes widened. "Hold up, you're gay?"

Tori nodded, "Well yeah, you don't have to say it like that Jade."

"No, no. It's cool, I just was not expecting that. I mean what about the guys you dated? You seemed perfectly content with them."

"They all turned out to be douches. Besides, I'm not gay because it didn't work out with guys, it didn't work out with guys because I'm gay."

"Wow, well that's very brave of you." A soft smile graced Jade's lips.

"Thanks Jade, the others know as well, and are completely supportive. I want other people to know and accept me for who I am. That reminds me, they wrote you some letters." Tori reached for her bag and pulled the letters out, handing them to Jade.

"Sure, and uh, thanks for all of this. It...means a lot." Jade replied, running her fingers along the letters. She wasn't exactly skilled at thanking people or showing sincere emotions, but she was touched that Tori was going through all this trouble to help.

"Of course Jade. That's what friends do, right?"

"Right." For the first time Jade didn't come up with a snide remark saying that they weren't friends. She truly meant that Tori was melting another part of Jade's ice cold heart.
