Samantha was pissed. She loved her Godfather to a fault but the man could be as stubborn as a mule. Voldermort was back which meant that he was back to being a spy. As a result he was spending the summer at Spinner's End and not with her. She was forbidden from visiting him and could only see him when he decided to visit. Even then he was abrupt and unpleasant. She knew that he was under a lot of stress but his general unpleasantness was getting to her. Gran was already out of her mind with worry and she did not want to trouble her. Deciding that she needed to talk and to someone discretionary she had written to Hermione but her reply today had convinced her that Severus had bungled things up there too. Deciding that enough was enough she had written to Severus to visit them at his earliest convenience. Right now she was standing in the middle of the living room and fuming at her Godfather's audacity. Instead of being apologetic for his uncouth behaviour the man had the guts to rebuke her for writing to Hermione.
'Samantha I have told you time and again that with the rise of the Dark Lord it is unsafe for our relationship to become public. Letting Miss Granger know that I am your Godfather was in itself foolish. On top of that you decided to talk to her about our day to day life.' He shouted.
'I don't get it Severus, what did Hermione do to aggravate you. I understand that you did not want our relation to become public knowledge and it is not like I went and told her for some personal pleasure. You were injured badly and she was the one there to help you. The only reason I wrote to her was because I know she is trustworthy. You are no longer around and with what happened at the end of last term I cannot help but be worried about you. I just wanted a listening ear.' Samantha finished with teary eyes.
Severus was instantly at her side, hugging her. He had not realized that his spying duties were taking an emotional toll on Samantha. He had reacted with his usual temper on realising that Miss Granger was now aware of his and Samantha's relation. Instead of thanking the girl for taking care of his injuries he had reprimanded her for entering his private quarters and had made it abundantly clear that she was unwelcome in his private life. He had told her in no uncertain terms that he wanted her to stay away from Samantha. But now he was realising his folly. Samantha was very young for keeping so many secrets and with him absent she had no one to share her thoughts and worries with. Perhaps having Miss Granger around would not be such a bad idea.
'I will talk to Miss Granger and fix this.' He said as he wiped the tears from her face and sat her down on the couch.
'Severus, it is not just me who requires a friendly ear. With everything getting heated up you could also use a friend as well.' Samantha said as Severus went to get her a glass of water.
'Don't push it, Samantha.' Severus replied with a smirk as he handed her the glass.
Hermione Granger was out of her mind with worry. Harry was going to face a trial for illegal use of magic and faced expulsion from Hogwarts. She had a sinking feeling that even Dumbledore would have trouble sorting this mess out. They had left for the Ministry an hour ago and Hermione had immediately gone to the library to distract herself. So far all she had succeeded in doing was snatching some random book and staring into space.
'Never figured you as the day dreaming type.' A voice drawled behind her breaking her out of her reverie.
'Professor Snape.' Hermione said a little coldly as she saw the Professor making himself comfortable on the chair opposite her. She was still upset with him for the fuss he had created on learning that she was aware of his and Samantha's relation.
'I presume you are worried about Potter's predicament.' He spoke and seeing her nod continued. 'He will be cleared. Dumbledore may have lost his reputation but he still has his wits intact.' He said. 'But it really is important now is that he remains in line or else he may also become the permanent fixture of this 'noble house of the blacks.' He spoke with a sneer.
Hermione was sure that the Professor had their best interest at heart and it was just his way of warning her to stay extra careful this year but she was not sure what exactly could she do to help. Harry had a penchant of getting into trouble without even trying. Deciding to leave the Professor to his devices she got up to leave.
'Miss Granger there is something else I would like to speak to you about. 'Severus said halting her exit.
'Yes Professor.' Hermione asked as she let out a breath and resumed her seat.
'It has been brought to my attention that I was little harsh with you regarding the circumstances at term end. You may have violated my privacy by entering my private chambers but you had no malicious intent. As such I apologise for my reaction. '
'An apology from Professor Snape. I am sure my name would go in History books for achieving this feat.' Hermione said with a slight smile.
'You give me undue credit Miss Granger. I have apologised both to Dumbledore and the Dark Lord multiple time. Not to mention Samantha and my grandmother.' Severus Smirked.
'So I am the only non-family member who isn't a manic or the most powerful wizard to gain this feat. I am still proud.' She smiled.
'One more thing Miss Granger, it is imperative that no one realises the relation between me and Samantha. I understand that she trusts you and may want to share her emotional issues with you but I hope that you would keep it to yourself.'
'Of course Professor.' Hermione said.
'And Miss Granger if it not much of an imposition I would also appreciate if you could continue in capacity of my assistant. '
This comment brought a genuine smile on Hermione's face.
'I would love too.' She said with a grin and Severus knew that he was truly forgiven now.
Harry had been cleared of all charges and with three weeks to go before start of term all of them were dragged by Mrs Weasely into helping make the headquarters habitable. The days dragged on for Hermione who could not wait to get back to Hogwarts. After her little chat with Professor Snape she was quite excited about resuming her assistant duties.
The arrival of the Hogwarts letters was a surprise. Truthfully Hermione was more surprised at Ron's appointment as Prefect than her own. She had been expecting Harry to get the batch. It was with these thoughts that she went up to her rooms. She was surprised to see Samantha's owl waiting for her. She quickly untied the letter and opened to envelope to find Professor Snape's scrawl instead of Samantha's.
Miss Granger
I would like to extend my congratulations on your appointment as the Gryffindor Prefect. I am sure you would prove to be completely deserving of the post. I am also aware that despite all expectation it was not Potter but Weasely who got the batch. I may not be very fond of your friend but even I agree that this was unfair. I have a feeling that the Dumbledore took this decision because of the present unpopularity of Mr Potter. I believe that he feels that the boy should not be in spot light in the present scenario. As unworthy as I find Potter I do not agree with Dumbledore's decision on this matter. I am responsible for a teenage child and thus understand how emotional they get. I therefore implore you to try and contain Mr Potter. You may come to me anytime you feel that Potter is about to do something stupid. Irrespective of my opinions, this year I would like to keep Potter from getting expelled.
Professor S Snape
Hermione was surprised to say the least. She had always felt that Professor Snape had their best interest in mind but this letter was solid proof that he was anything but evil. Deciding to pay close attention to Harry than ever before she went to bed.
The start of the term feast was informative for Hermione. Umbridge's speech made her realise that importance of Professor Snape's warning. The Ministry was interfering in Hogwarts which meant that anything stupid that Harry did would have far greater consequences than ever before. Deciding to talk to Professor Snape at the earliest possible opportunity Hermione went to bed.
The next day Potion class was different in a way that Professor Snape did not call on Hermione with any insults but his behaviour with Harry was the same. Hermione had expected that he may ease up on him this year what with his letter and everything but Snape's behaviour made Hermione wonder if she had dreamt up the letter.
By the time the day ended Hermione was more than exhausted. Harry had already earned a detention with Umbridge. 'So much for being careful.' She thought as she sat at her usual spot in the library. She had just started on her homework when Samantha joined her.
'Hey' the younger girl greeted.
'Hey yourself' Hermione replied.
'Hermione I know you are mad at me for not telling you about Severus but well he had expressly forbidden me from mentioning.' Samantha said as she took out her books.
'It's ok. I was shocked and reacted instinctively. You are my friend and I thought I deserved to know. But well it is your business in the end.' Hermione replied.
'So we are good.' Samantha said hopefully.
'Yes we are good.' Hermione replied with a smile.
'Well then Severus asked me let you know that he will be expecting you in his lab after dinner.'
'Ohh! Well I will be there then.' Hermione replied a little surprised. She had not expected to start her assistant duties so soon into the term.
'Well I will be able to ask his opinion regarding Umbridge then.' She thought.
Severus was more than a little worked up. His death eater job was turning out to be much more pressing than last time. Then there was his teaching duties, his head of the house duties and the brewing for hospital wing. On top of that there were the St. Mungos requests. He was sure that if continued this way he would lose his mind from exertion. Well at least he did not have any Ministry requests, Fudge was distrustful of anyone close to Dumbledore and hence he was shunned from the ministry service. He was working on the St Mungos request when he heard the knock and realised that it must be Miss Granger.
Admitting her in and instructing her to work on a burning salve he went back to work. It was about an hour later that he looked up. Needing to let his potion to shimmer he went to check on Hermione and saw that she was already done and bottling the potion.
'Miss Granger, I remember telling you to keep Potter low profile. Do tell me in what scenario is a detention from Umbridge in her first lesson low profile.' He barked from behind her.
'You may not have realised but I am not Harry's guardian. I can only advise him beyond that it is really not in my control.' She replied frustrated.
She was fed up with Harry ready to bite her head off whenever she voiced an opinion and now Snape blaming her for his detention was the last straw. Leaving the bottles on the desk and she walked out of the lab slamming the door.
Muttering under her breath she reached the common room and sat down to complete her homework. But seeing Fred and George testing their joke shop products on first years drove her to the edge. She knew that threatening to write to Mrs Weasely was not strictly fair but she was beyond caring. Deciding to retire for the night before she finally broke down and shouted at Harry for his stupid behaviour she went up to her dorm.
The next few days passed in a blurring haze for Hermione. The school work was enormous and on top of that there were her Prefect duties. Snape had yet to summon her again. She knew that with the stunt she had pulled she should apologise but she really did not feel like going up to him and with Harry continuing to throw a tantrum at the drop of her hat, she really had her hands full.
It was on Friday morning when she learnt what was going on with Harry in Umbridge's detention. She was flabbergasted to say the least. Deciding that she really needed to talk to Snape but not really ready to face him she did the next best thing and sent a note to Samantha asking her to meet in the library before class.
'No way, that sick bitch!' Samantha spoke outraged.
'Sush... Keep your voice down.' Hermione said looking out for Madam Pince.
'But this torture she cannot be allowed to continue. You should complain to someone.' Samantha whispered.
'I am not sure if anyone can do anything seeing that Fudge sent her and well I was hoping to tell Professor Snape.'
'Yes, you should speak to Severus he will surely do something He… What?' Samantha said looking at Hermione's expression.
'Well I was kind of hoping that you would talk to him. We did not part on exactly the right terms.'
'What did he do now?' Samantha said exasperation evident in her voice.
'Oh Nothing, well I was kind of having a bad day and well I shouted at him.' Hermione confessed.
'Wouldn't be without reason. Ok I will let him know but I think you should talk to him. He really needs help with his work and would not allow me seeing that it would be suspicious.'
'hmm ok.' Hermione said as they both got up to leave for their classes.
Severus was in his office when Samantha came to speak to him. He had been expecting Umbridge to be nasty and abusive but this was worse than his wildest imagination. She would have put some of the death eaters to shame. Well at least Dark Lord would be pleased. It was with these thoughts that he decided to work on some of the hospital wings supplies. He had just started on the ingredients when he heard a timid knock and praying that it was not some first year slytherin looking for reassurance he opened the door to find Miss Granger standing. Standing aside to let her in he glared at her.
'I do not like lousy assistants.' He snarled.
Hermione was taken aback she had been expecting a cutting lecture on her behaviour and to be told that she was no longer required. She had come prepared for some growling. But it seemed that the Professor was in a forgiving mood. Deciding not to count her blessings. She apologised and went to work.
Severus knew that he had been a little too harsh with the girl and with all that was going on he was sure she was under enormous pressure so decided to let bygones be. It was a while later that he spoke to her.
'Samantha told me about Potter's detention.' He said attracting her attention.
'I was not really sure who to talk to.' She replied.
'You could have directly come to me. I do not bite.' He said with a smirk.
Hermione was more than a little surprised by his tone. But continued.
'I tried to warn Harry but he is not in the right frame of mind. I think the time with the Dursely's without any news has made him more than a little agitated and he won't admit but I think something is the issue between him and Dumbledore.'
'Miss Granger I am aware that it is difficult to control teenage boys and Potter has always been hard headed but I had hoped that he would listen to your voice of reason. At least I expect you will inform me if he does something rash. I am not sure how much I will be able to help with Umbridge but I would prefer not to be caught off guard.'
'Sure Professor.' Hermione said as she got up to leave.
'One more thing Miss Granger, Essence of Murtlap works well on a sore hand as I am sure you are well aware.' He said looking at her.
Hermione flashed him a big smile and rushed to the store to gather some. She was sure that Harry would appreciate the release from pain.
The appointment of Umbridge as The High Inquisitor was received with a gloom among teachers and student alike. Severus was infuriated on learning about the inspection. He was not going to give the old toad satisfaction by reacting. He had decided that maintaining her good graces was essential and for once both his masters agreed on it. Dumbledore knew that taking the ministry head on was not a logical option and Voldermort believed that having people sympathetic to the cause placed in the ministry was in their favour. Severus personally wanted to throttle her and then throw her in the lake. The mere presence of the woman irritated him no end. He had made Samantha promise that she would keep her head down and continue with her studies. He did not want her to end in detention with that foul woman because come what may if she hurt her he would not be able to maintain his cover. His thoughts were interrupted by McGonagall entrance to the staff room. She seemed agitated and was muttering under her breath.
'Don't tell me you already got the honour of being inspected.' He drawled.
'No not yet I thing she is working on softer targets first. Trelawney got inspected today.' She said as she sat down.
'What has you in such a mood then?' He asked.
'It is Potter. He landed himself in another week of detention with that woman. I don't know why that boy cannot manage to keep his mouth shut. I even had to take points from him.'
'You should not have. 'Severus said in a tone that surprised McGonagall.
'I cannot believe this. You are always trying to get the boy expelled and now you are sticking up for him when I took points.' She said outraged.
'Minerva contrary to popular belief I am not really a monster who takes sadistic pleasure in hurting children. The boy is already under lot of pressure because of the Ministry's attitude. His classmates have shunned him and even Dumbledore is being aloof. He is bound to react.'
'I am surprised Severus, not that I consider you a heartless bastard but I never thought you would care enough to think about Mr. Potter. You have always detested him and well I can hazard a guess as to why.'
'No you cannot. Don't presume to understand my feelings Minerva. All I am saying is that you are not aware of all that is going on. The only reason I am asking you to ease up on the boy is because Umbridge is already cruel enough in her detentions.' He snarled.
'What do you mean? What is she doing? Minerva asked.
'She is making him do lines with a blood quill. 'He spoke, his tone dangerous.
'What! The nerve of that woman. I am going to Dumbledore this very moment. She cannot be allowed to continue. I can't believe you are just mentioning it.' She huffed.
'Exactly what would you have me do? You are aware that Dumbledore is powerless. I do not believe that Potter would appreciate you creating a scene on his behalf.'
'And suddenly you are an expert on Mr. Potter.' She said clearly agitated.
'I unlike you Minerva am aware of the mind set of teenage boys. If you really want to do something then just ignore that toad. She has a chronic condition of seeking attention. It will irritate her no end.' He said as he walked out of the staff room.
Severus was walking on a precarious line. Voldemort was completely mad this time around and though he seemed to trust him there were many who did not. Every meeting with the death eaters was talking its toll. He was frequently called upon to torture and torment those who had displeased the dark lord. Severus realized rather quickly that in the last fourteen years he had lost his appetite for cruelty. His students would surely disagree he thought with a mental smile. Entering his lab he was rather surprised to see Miss Granger there brewing.
'I did not realize that I had asked you to come.' He said getting her attention.
'Oh. You hadn't but I thought maybe I could check if you needed any help. Then I saw the list and thought I could get some done.'
'Thank you I think.' He answered wearily.
'Professor are you all right.' Hermione asked tentatively. 'You look tired,'
'I am fine Miss Granger. But I would very much like to know about Potter's new club.'
At the look of alarm on her face he continued 'What you thought I would not learn of your antics. I like Black am a part of the order. As you are well aware. Yes Miss Granger I am aware that Black knows about this. He was very supportive last I heard.'
'Professor I did not mean to hide this from you. It is just I was not sure of your reaction.'
'Did I or did I not tell you to come to me when Potter planned anything rash.'
'It was my idea not Harry's.' She muttered.
'What did you say?' He spoke fury evident.
'I just, I thought that we needed to learn defence and well Harry could teach better than Professor Umbridge.'
'I am sure he can. Even Crumple-Horned Snorkack from Lovegood fantasy would teach you better than that toad. If you are going to continue with this nonsense make sure no one babbles. She already has an inkling or else she would not have banned the school groups.'
'You are not going to punish me or report me.' Hermione said timidly.
'Who do you suggest I report you to? The Order is aware and it implies that both your head of the house and the headmaster are aware and ready to condone. Even I am above reporting you to that old toad and where punishment is concerned I am sure you will earn enough during this year to compensate.'
"Professor Snape, you really hate Umbridge. Don't you?
'What gave it away, Miss Granger?' He replied snidely.
'It is just that you do not hate easily.'
'Most people would say that hate is all that I am capable of feeling.'
'Most people have not seen you near Sirius and Pettigrew. That was the only time I saw true hatred in your eyes. You were scary.' She said boldly.
Severus was surprised that the girl has noticed this. No one had ever taken the time to understand his feelings. With her thirst for knowledge and the penchant for observation she reminded him of himself. Well a very show-off version of himself, he thought sarcastically.
'Black, Pettigrew and Umbridge all have something in common Miss Granger. Something that I most detest.'
'What?' She said not sure that she wanted to learn the answer.
'Bullying. And before you argue I am not a big fan of myself.'
'I never thought you were a bully. You just dislike stupidity which makes you a harsh teacher but not a bully.'
'Flattery won't get you anywhere.' He smirked.
'As they say, it is not flatter if it is true.' She replied with a smile.
'Anyways you do not spy on personal mails and floo and that in itself is way more than I can speak for her.' Hermione continued
'How do you know I don't? Maybe I am just too good to be caught.'
'You are just messing with me. Aren't you?' Hermione said as she narrowed her eyes.
'That Miss Granger, you will never know. 'He said now openly smiling.
'I think I should leave it is already late. Good night Professor Snape.'
'Good night Miss Granger.'
The next few days passed without much incident. It was by the end of the week that Hermione saw Samantha working furiously in the library.
'Hi Sam' She said
'Hi, I have been meaning to talk to you.' Samantha said as she closed her books and got up.
'Sure. About what?' Hermione asked curiously.
'Not here, come with me.' The girl said as she walked out of the library.
Hermione followed her to an empty classroom. Where Samantha calmly closed the door and casted a silencing spell. Then she turned
'What have I done to offend you?' She shouted at the top of her voice.
Hermione was taken aback and had to clutch the table to calm herself.
'Ok I am not sure what are you talking about.' She said catching her breath.
'Not sure what I am not talking about.' Samantha huffed. 'Your bloody defence group is what I am talking about. Why is it that the whole Hogwarts gets invited except for me?' She shouted
'Hmm about that I was not really sure if you would be interested.'
'This is about Severus isn't it? You thought I would rat you out. Well for your information he already knows seeing that he was the one who told me.'
'I know we spoke about it and well you are right I did not involve you because of Professor Snape.' She held up her hand to stop her from interrupting, 'Not because I thought you would rat us out but because there will be a lot of Gryffindors and with Harry leading the group none of them would mince their words when talking about Professor Snape. '
'I am aware that students don't really like him. I have been in Hogwarts for four years now.' Samantha said.
'Don't like him is a huge understatement when it comes to Harry. Maybe 'outright hate him' or 'consider him a mortal enemy' would be more like it. Samantha, I am offended when Harry and Ron talk about him and I am not a big fan of Professor Snape.' Hermione continued.
'Ok I get it but it is not like they have formed a secret Snape hate society. They won't be talking about him all the time will they? Can I at least try?'
'Sure but please tell Professor Snape that it was your idea. I would prefer not to get on his bad side again.' Hermione spoke with a grimace.
'About that, what actually happened? Neither of you ever told me as to what he did to make you so mad.'
'What he did? What he didn't do should be the question. He came to my home unannounced and berated me in front of my parents. Saying that I was a gossip with a too big a nose and that he would make sure that I paid the price for interfering where it was not my business. When my mother tried to calm him and ask him as to what was going on. He told her that I was the most irritating child he ever had the misfortune to teach and that I was corrupting those few he considered worth teaching which apparently included you. When my father said that this could not really be true as all my other teachers seemed to be pleased with me. He went on to say that he could see where I got my condescending attitude from. Then he threatened me that if he ever saw me in your company he would make sure to drop my address in front of the Dark Lord.'
By the time Hermione finished she was already in tears. Samantha gently hugged her.
'I cannot believe him. How in the seven hell did you forgive him?'
'Well he apologised.' Hermione muttered
'Apologised! How could someone apologise for that?' Samantha said incensed.
'Samantha Professor Snape really cares for you and well I am not aware what version of him you see but in my world he NEVER apologises. It was like You Know Who throwing a party for all the muggle borns. I know he never would have gone through with that threat. He is always putting his life on line to save us but he actually admitted that he was wrong and that meant a great deal to me.'
'You really admire him. Don't you?'
'Yes I do but don't tell him. His ego does not need any more boast.'
Both the girls laughed at this and they knew that finally they were back being the friends they were.
It was the day of the Gryffindor vs Slytherin Quidditch match and Severus had an ominous feeling that something was going to go wrong. It was clear during breakfast that the match was going to be anything but friendly, with the slytherins chanting 'Weasely is our king' Severus was concerned about Potter's temper. Any more rule breaking and he may actually end up expelled. Deciding to be on guard Severus proceeded towards the ground when his arm began to burn.
'The Dark Lord managed to choose the most inopportune moment to call him.' He thought as he rushed to the dungeons to crab his cloak and mask. He hoped that Potter would contain his temper as he apparated to the Dark Lord.
Severus has reappeared in a clearing near the woods. The Dark Lord was pacing with all the death eaters standing in a line. Silently Severus took his place.
'None of you, absolutely none of you could procure the prophecy for me.' The Dark Lord fumed.
'Severus do you have any news?' He hissed.
'My Lord the order has not planned anything new. Just the one guard at the Ministry. Potter still has no clue. Dumbledore would rather keep him in the dark.' Severus said
'Hmm and what about the Umbridge woman. How is she handling Hogwarts.'
'She may end up expelling Potter if things continue as they are. The boy has managed to earn detention for two consecutive weeks.'
'I do not want Potter expelled. He will be even more difficult to catch at his muggle relatives.'
'I will try my best.' Severus said as he bowed his head.
'You may leave for now Severus but make sure to report to me the moment something changes.'
'Yes My Lord.'
Severus apparated back to Hogwarts and rushed to the Quidditch pitch to find no one in sight. Deciding that he would certainly get the answers in the staff room he walked back only to find Samantha in the entrance hall. Together they went to the potion's class room.
'I saw that you were missing at the game.' She said once they were settled.
'Yes got called.' He replied.
'Are you fine?' she said alarmed.
'Samantha the Dark Lord does not torture us at the drop of a hat. He will hardly be able to maintain followers that way.'
'But you were injured so badly last term.'
'That was a one off. To test my loyalty. You do not need to worry. He is not concerned about me at the moment.'
'I will try. Anyways I thought you would like to know what happened.' She said.
'Let me guess the slytherin trampled the Gryffindors.'
'In a manner of speaking but not at the game.'
'What do you mean?' He asked alarmed.
'Just that Malfoy said something that wound up the Weasely twins and Harry so much they started a fist fight resulting in a lifelong ban for each of them.'
'You are telling me that Potter has been banned from Quidditich.' He said surprise evident in his voice,
'I had hoped you would be happy seeing that Gryffindor won't be able to win any more games this year.'
'With no Quidditch Potter would have more time in his hand and end up getting in far more trouble.'
'I am not sure I get you. You seem to dislike Harry but anytime something wrong happens to him you are genuinely worried.'
'That is because I want a monopoly on punishing him.' He replied with a smile. 'But that is enough about Potter. How are you doing? How are those defence lessons coming along?
'I have been good. Keeping a low profile on Umbridge as you told me. Defence is great but I am sure you could teach me way more. She said.
'Of course I can. But I hardly have time and your regular interaction with Potter may instil some brain into that boy.' He said.
They talked for some more time before Samantha decided to retire for the night. Severus was walking to the Ravenclaw tower when he noticed light in Hagrid's hut. Deciding to pay a visit to the half giant he walked out and was greeted by a disgruntled Umbridge on the way.
'Hello Severus.' She spoke in her high pitched voice making him cringe
'Dolores you seem rather hassled.' He said trying to be civil.
'I have a feeling that the staff here has an unnatural affinity to Potter and Dumbledore.' She said.
'What an appalling thought?' Severus said with a disgusted expression.
'Yes I know we share the same dislikes maybe we could work out something in our mutual benefit.' She said again.
'Go on I am listening.' He said.
'I would like to interrogate Potter and some of his fan club if you could provide me with some veratiserum it would be highly appreciated.'
'I am sure I can manage that.'
'I will make sure that the Minister is aware of your cooperation.' She spoke loftily.
'And I will make sure you end up in hell.' He thought as he saw her leave.
Losing any interest in visiting Hagrid he walked back to the dungeons.
The next day passed in a haze for Severus. He gave Umbrigde a vial of veratiserum after making sure to render it useless first. He may have once threatened Potter with the same but it was too dangerous if Umbridge managed to dose the boy.
It was late in the night and he had just fallen asleep when Dumbledore flooed him. Alarmed he arrived to his office to see a dishevelled McGonagall sitting there.
'Arthur has been attacked while on watch.' Dumbledore spoke.
'Is he..?' Severus asked
'Alive, yes but only just. He has been taken to St. Mungos. He was bitten by Voldermort's snake.' Dumbledore explained.
'Nagini. How do we know this?' Severus questioned.
'Harry had a vision.'
'What?' Severus said shocked.
'The boy has a connection with Voldermort through his scar. He has been able to get a whiff of his moods whenever they are strong. I have feeling that tonight Voldermort realised this. It was for less than a second but I sensed him in the boy's eyes.' Dumbledore explained
'This could be dangerous. The Dark Lord will find some way of utilizing this or may simply try to possess the boy.' Severus said alarmed.
'I agree with you and hence we need to fix this.' Dumbledore said.
'There is only one way but I am not sure if that is possible.' Severus said thoughtfully.
'What way?' McGonagall spoke interested.
'Occulmency' Dumbledore replied. 'Harry has to learn to hide his thoughts.'
'Good Luck on that Albus. I am not sure the boy is capable.' Severus sneered.
'It is not me who will need the luck. I intend for you to train Harry.' Dumbledore said.
'What? Are you out of your mind? You think that Potter would allow me to access his mind.
'All the more reason for him to learn. I cannot allow even a remotest possibility of Lord Voldermort to even accidently enter my mind.'
'What about my mind? Did you consider that I may not want Potter to enter it?' Severus fumed.
'You have managed to shield yourself against Lord Voldermort time and again Severus and you may have my pensive to protect your memories from Potter.'
'There is a fine line between using and abusing Dumbledore. I hope you know that.' Severus said as he walked out.
He was seething with anger and went to the lab directly. There was no point in going back to bed. He won't be able to get any more sleep.
The next day was difficult for all the staff. Umbridge was furious with Potter and all the Weaselys disappearing. Severus was the only one who could worm his way into conducting regular classes. By the end of the day he was exhausted. Deciding to work on some of the simpler Potions he went to the lab and was joined by a dishevelled Hermione.
'Miss Granger, I was not expecting you today.' He drawled
'I have been distracted all day worrying about Mr. Weasely, I thought maybe brewing could take my mind off it.' She said.
'It seems you were too distracted to see a mirror. You look like you wrestled a dragon.'
'That may have been easier. That overgrown toad is driving me crazy.' Suddenly she clasped her mouth realising that she insulted a teacher and in front of Professor Snape.
'Do continue Miss Granger.' Severus smirked.
'Well she has gone completely mental with Harry and the others disappearing and seems to think maybe I have some clue. She even asked me to join for tea in her office.' Hermione shuddered.
'Hmm. Well do not eat or drink anything she gives you. She is not above drugging them. I had to provide her vertersirum the other day and though I made it useless I am not sure if she may have any other potion at her disposal.'
'Rest assured Professor she will have to bodily drag me to get me alone with her.' Hermione said.
'Miss Granger I had a request to make of you.'
'Sure Professor.' Hermione answered curious.
'When you go to see Mr Weasely please collect a sample of his blood. Preferably without Molly realising. I will obviously provide you with the necessary equipment and teach you how it is done.'
'Hmm ok. May I ask why?'
'Do not ask inane questions. Does not suit you.' He said
'You want to research the poison.' She said tentatively.
'Obviously. 'He said.
'You are worried others may be attacked.' She said
'I spend a lot of time near that monstrous creature. It is simply self-preservation.' He spoke uncomfortable with the line of conversation.
'If you say so.' She literary sang.
'I do say so Miss Granger.' He spoke in an irritated tone.
It was later in the night when Hermione had completed working that Severus spoke again.
'If you plan to go to London directly once term ends I could escort you.'
Hermione was taken aback by this. 'That would be great thank you.' She said a little uncertain.
'It is no big deal I will anyways be going there so you may tag along. Just do not mention it those morons you call friends.'
'Sure then I will see you come weekend.' She said.
'Good night Miss Granger.'
As promised Severus dropped Hermione off at Grimauld place at the start of the holidays. She had been worried sick about Mr Weasely and was relieved to know that he was improving. What she had not expected to find was a recluse and sullen Harry. It was with lot of cajoling and some downright argument that she got him to see reason. Once Harry was confident that he was not being possessed the atmosphere improved. She visited Mr weasely on Christmas day with the others and manage to withdraw his blood without anyone realising.
It was after Christmas that Hermione saw Snape again. She had just been reading in the library when she heard noises in the entrance hall and went to check. It was a surprise to find back completely healed. She entered the kitchen with everyone else and was shocked at the sight that greeted him. Professor Snape and Sirius were both standing with wands pointed at each other. Startled they both seem to quickly regain their composure and the Professor swiftly walked out. Checking that everyone's attention was on Mrs Weasely Hermione slipped out and went after Severus.
'Professor Snape.' She said halting him.
'Miss Granger.' He said in a weary tone. "I am in no mood to be interrogated.'
'I did not mean to bother you Professor I just...' Hermione looked around not sure how to continue.
'You just what Miss Granger? Could not help but poke your nose in others business.' He sneered.
'Professor I just wanted to check if you are ok. You looked pretty worked up inside and well Sirius is not the best of company to anyone right now I was not sure how he reacted to you.'
'Your concern Miss Granger is neither needed nor welcome.'
'Why do you do this? Become all defensive and rude.' She huffed. 'You reacted in the same way when you learned about my knowledge as to your and Samantha's relationship. By now you must have realised that I do not intend you any harm.' She said irritation evident in her voice.
'Maybe because you have the worst of timings. I know it is difficult to guess but I am rather short tempered.' He said smiling slightly. 'Come we can sit in the library and I will answer your questions or else your brain may simply collapse with curiosity.'
Smiling cheerfully Hermione followed him to the library where he proceeded to tell her about Harry's Occulmency lessons.'
'And of course Black had to interfere and threaten me on behalf of Potter.' He finished.
'I do not get it. You and Sirius what exactly is the problem. Harry once told me that you and his Dad went to school together and did not get along.'
'His father was a conceited, arrogant prick who never had the guts to take me on unless he was four to one.' Snape snarled.
'Isn't it too long to maintain a school grudge? I mean Harry's dad is dead and Sirius spent twelve years in Azkaban for a crime he did not commit. You both are on the same side now.'
'You have a compulsive need to voice your opinion about everything under the sun. 'He spoke his voice dangerously low.
'I am sorry if I offended you Professor.' Hermione said not really wanting to get on his wrong side.
Severus just walked out of the library without a word slamming the door behind him.
The term began and with that Severus started on the Occulmency lessons with Potter. As a result he became more and more pressed for time. His general disposition became even more surly and short. Samantha was getting bothered for him and decided to speak to him but when she reached his quarters, he was not there. Deciding to wait for him she sat on the couch with some random book from his collection.
It was late by the time Severus arrived. He staggered to his quarters and was about to just fall on his bed when he saw Samantha dozing off in his couch. Not in a mood to chat he levitated the girl to the bed and covered her with his blanket and himself slept on the couch.
The next morning Samantha woke up to see Severus with a copy of Daily Prophet and a cup of coffee in his hand sitting on the couch. She could see the tension evident in the frown lines. Getting up she went to him and touched him tentatively. She was shocked to see his eyes filled with tears. Without any words he just hugged her surprising her even more.
'Severus what is the matter? You are scaring me.' She said.
'You should be scared he said.' His voice hoarse. 'I have failed Samantha. You mother had entrusted me with you and I have failed her. How could I protect you when I am the one unleashing all the evil in this world?' He said his voice heavy with emotion.
"What are you talking about?' She said perplexed.
He handed her the prophet as way of answer.
Samantha was shocked to see the news of Azkaban Breakout'.
'Severus did you?' She questioned.
'Yes, I was leading the attack and now every life they take, every person they torture is on my head.'
'You cannot go blaming yourself. It is 'You know who's 'fault and maybe even Dumbledore's for asking you to do this but not yours.' She said righteously.
'Hurry back or you will be late for class.' He said regaining his demeanour.
That evening Severus worked alongside Hermione and felt her giving him furtive glances.
'Miss Granger if you want to say something please get on with it.'
'No Nothing Professor it is just that today's Prophet.' She spoke
'So Samantha told you that I led the attack freeing those death eaters. I should have expected this. Well if you are too scared to stay in my vicinity you may leave.' He spoke his tone low.
Hermione stared at him. 'I was not aware of this.' She said softly.
'What?'
'I wanted to talk to you about the death of Broderick Bode. He got strangled by a potted plant in St Mungo's.'
'What of it?' Severus said slightly wrong footed.
'It is just that we saw the plant arrive for him at the hospital. We were visiting Mr Weasely and happened to be there. I did not realise what it was. He was murdered and I could have prevented it.'
'Miss Granger remember one thing if the dark Lord wanted him dead he would have been dead. Sooner or later. Had any of you got involved it would have only made you a target too.'
Not completely reassured but feeling a weight lift from her chest Hermione resumed her work. It was when she was leaving that she spoke again.
'Professor if nearly Five years in your class have not made me think you vicious I hardly think some random death eater attack would bring me to my senses.'
Severus was amused in spite of himself. He was not sure when but it seemed the girl had developed a backbone and a resistance to his snarky attitude.
The next week brought a flurry of activities for Severus. Umbridge seemed hell bent on making Hogwarts a living hell. With a new educational decree every other day she was getting on his nerve. He was already pressed between Dumbledore and Voldermort and if she continued with her attics, he may end up straggling her with his bare hands. With these thoughts he entered the great hall for breakfast and was surprised to find the toad at Potter's neck. She was screeching at the top of her voice. Deciding that he would soon come to know the situation he sat for breakfast.
It was later in the staff room that he got hold of the article. He could not believe this. For once Potter's action had brought a smile to his face. Though he had a sneaking suspicion that it was Miss Granger behind this. Though how she got Rita Skeeter to writ e something like this and that also for the Quibller he would never know.
'I am surprised you find this amusing.' McGonagall said. 'Won't this cause you trouble with 'You know who'.
'I highly doubt that. He will not be happy but seeing that I successfully freed a bunch of death eaters from Azkaban, he may ignore this.' Severus replied.
'I am surprised that you could be so casual. He is mad and powerful. A dangerous combination.'
'I am not sure what you all picture him as but I will assure you that he does not throw curses hither thither. Yes he does punish but then he rewards in an equally great way. Why do you think he has so many followers? '
'I think I never thought about it that way.' She said thoughtfully. 'What drove you to join him Severus, if I may ask?'
Her question was greeted by a silence as Severus stared at nothing in particular.
'You do not have to answer.' He said hastily.
'No its fine. I am just not sure if you will understand.' Severus spoke 'You come from a decent enough family where relations matter. It is was not like that for me. Though I was never physically abused my parents always resented me. It was apparent in the little thinks. They would never care to ask if I ate or studied or where I was the whole day. It was like I did not matter as if I could disappear and no one would be any wiser. I was really excited to come to Hogwarts to finally have a new beginning but very soon I realised it was not to be. First it was Potter and Black tormenting me at every opportunity. 'Seeing that Minerve intended to speak he held up a hand. 'I know you feel it was both ways but there are certain things you are not aware of. Certain things that Albus let slide. I am not saying he had anything against me but it felt so at the moment. Teenagers have a fragile mind and being a half blood with no family name or money to speak of makes you fairly useless in the Slytherin house. I felt like I did not belong. The Dark Lord is a good judge of weakness and strength. He exploits both. He knew exactly what I wanted. A thirst for knowledge and a place to belong. He made sure I received the best of education in both Dark arts and Potions. For the first time in my life I could see a future for myself. He took the time to make me feel wanted. What he wanted in return did not seem so huge compared to what I received. It was never the pure blood ideology that swayed me. For me it was always the awe of his knowledge. He himself taught me quite a few things and his brilliance won me over. Even then I realised that is ideology was flawed but I convinced myself that if this genius rules the wizarding world there would always be justice for the underdog. 'Severus released a breath as he finished.
'Then what made you leave. As far as I know you have made a good fortune for yourself from all the education and learning you received.' McGonagall questioned.
Severus laughed a hollow laugh. "You still don't get it. You think I want fame and fortune. I have no use for either. All I wanted was a feeling of being wanted but I realised the price was too high for me. Death and destruction are something I have never approved off.' He spoke as he got up.
'I think I will take my leave now. I have a class to teach.' With that said he walked off.
Severus did get called by Voldermort that night but it was not because of Harry's interview. The Dark Lord had finally found out that the prophecy could be removed by its owner only and hence Potter would have to remove it. He wanted Severus to tell him Potter's weakness.
'His hero complex. His compulsive need to save the day.' Severus sneered.
The Dark Lord seemed to contemplate this.
'Very well. I will lure the boy there. His emotions will serve me well.' He said as he dismissed them all.
Severus at once went to Dumbledore to inform of this development. The Headmaster for once seemed genuinely worried.
'Harry has to master Occulmency.' He said.
'I am trying my best Albus. But maybe you should take it over.' Severus spoke.
'No his reaction to me had been worrying. I cannot risk that. You will have to do this Severus.'
Knowing that arguing with the headmaster was useless. Severus left his office.
The next day Severus tried to put in more effort in Harry's Occulmency lessons but was incensed to find that the boy was putting in no effort at all.
With his obstinacy Potter was sure to get all of them killed.
The DA was training and learning the patronus spell from Harry. Samantha was having trouble with the spell, not sure what she was doing wrong she asked Harry's help. Though she was close to Hermione she had never really spoken to Harry before. She was a little prejudiced against him because of Severus's intense dislike but then she realised that her godfather actually cared for the boy and that had made her resent him. Knowing that she could not mention this to Hermione and Severus may actually think her foolish for thinking such thoughts, she had kept this to herself. The DA meetings were a kind of an eye opener for her. For the first time she realised that Harry was like any other boy and not the show off she had pinned him for. He was actually quite friendly. So deciding that asking him to check on her technique would not be that bad.
'Umm Harry could you help me here?' She said going to him
She cast the spell for his observation and only wisps came out.
'I think it is not your technique that is the problem.' Harry spoke thoughtfully. 'I had the same problem when I learned the spell. It is the memory. You need a stronger memory.' Harry said.
Samantha was floored. She had thought of her memory of receiving the Hogwarts letter and spending time with Severus throughout the year. She had been elated but apparently that was not happy enough.
Seeing her confused look Harry spoke once again. 'I am not sure what you were thinking and I do not want to pry but maybe you need a more meaningful memory. Something that is closer to your heart.'
Suddenly something registered to Samantha and she concentrated hard her mind repeating the event of a few days back when Severus had hugged her while he told her of the Askaban breakout. While it was not a happy occasion Samantha had been overcome with emotion to realise the love of her Godfather and as that feeling swelled in her heart a silver raven burst out of her wand.
'It seems to have worked.' Harry commented.
Samantha gave him a huge smile and pulled him in a bone crushing hug.
'Never thought I would see someone except Hermione so happy on learning a spell.' Harry said
'Ohh it is not the spell. I just realised something. I have been really stupid.' She spoke and ran turned to leave the room when Dobby appeared with the warning of Umbridge's arrival and all hell broke loose.
Among the confusion Samantha somehow escaped but she saw Harry getting caught and rushed to the dungeon to tell Severus.
'Severus' she shouted as she entered his office and finding him went on to tell him about the DA meet and Harry getting caught.
'I am really scared. That foul woman will get Harry expelled.' Samantha sobbed.
'I was not aware that you cared so deeply for Potter.' Severus commented.
'It is complicated. 'She said and explained her initial dislike and then resentment towards Harry.
'I feel really guilty now. 'She finished still crying.
'First of all no one, absolutely no one in this whole world matters to me more than you. I thought that you knew that.' He said as he wiped her tears. 'I care for Potter's well-being because I think I owe him.'
'What?' Samantha said curious.
'The man that I admired and followed killed his parents.' He said by way of explanation.
'You should go to your tower before Umbridge catches you. I will see what I can do to help Potter.' He said as he ushered her out.
Severus reached the headmaster's office to find Minerva with Harry and Marrienta Egdecombe.
'What happened?' He asked.
'Not here, why don't you walk with me.' McGonagall said
She explained everything to Severus once she had escorted both the students to bed.
'I cannot believe I missed it.' Severus said amused
'How can you be so cheerful when you knowing full well that SHE will be headmistress now?' McGonegall spoke
'I think you will realise Minerva that just being the head is not enough, you need a staff to run the school. I have no intention of cooperating with that pathetic excuse for human being, what do you say?'
'I am not sure I get you.' Minerva spoke softly.
'Ohh you will, just keep in mind that discipline and order at Hogwarts is no longer our concern.' He spoke as he walked off.
Severus had been sure that the students would retaliate and he was not disappointed. There was an impressive firework in the school. Normally he would be annoyed by this but today all he did was smirked at Minerva and walked off.
It was only when he reached his office that he started laughing.
'You should do that more often.' A voice said from behind him and at once he was alert with his wand pointed at the source.
'It is just me Professor.' Hermione said raising a hand.
'What are you doing here in class hours?' He snarled.
'I just wanted to ask. '
'Get on with it I don't have the whole day.' He said.
'I am not sure if Harry is getting anywhere with the occulmency. He still keeps having those dreams. He won't admit it to me but it is clear as day'
'I know I saw the Dark Lord's meeting in his mind.' Severus said.
'I just wanted to ask you to be a little patient with him. 'She said softly
'What are you trying to imply Miss Granger?' Severus said his voice dangerously low.
'Ron already keeps trying to talk him against you and if you keep losing your temper with him, it will certainly not help.'
'I will try to be a little tolerant.' Severus said.
'That is all I am asking.' Hermione replied as she left his office.
The next day something happened that broke any resolve that Severus had of being patient with Potter. The boy had taken advantage of his absence and witnessed one of his worst memories. Throwing him out of the class he proceeded to destroy the class room. He was still seething with fury as he walked back to his chambers. Right now he did not care about the prophecy or the dark lord penetrating Potter's mind. He could himself strangle the boy and save Dark Lord the trouble.
Easter passed without much incident. Hermione was a little uneasy though. Harry was behaving oddly and Snape was in an even worse mood. She found it difficult to believe that Harry was done learning Occulmency. She knew something was wrong but did not have the courage to talk to Snape in his current mood. As such she asked Samantha to speak to him.
Something even worse happened before she could get this mess sorted out. Harry broke into Umbridge's office to talk to Sirius and though he managed to get it done without getting caught, it still did not seem to improve his surly attitude. She was not sure if she imagined it but that night Snape also seemed to be in a dangerous mood. Growling at anything and everything.
Deciding to lay the matter rest for now she went about with her studies. The OWLS were just around the corner and with all the things going on she was sure she had bungled up her studies. Then there was the matter of carer advice. McGonegal had thought that she was capable of pretty much anything but that was the problem, she did not want to do anything but something meaningful. She was frustrated because she could not decide and Snape was being the biggest git ever so asking him for advice was out of question. Meanwhile trouble for Umbridge went on increasing. Student, staff and ghost alike were creating mayhem and whoever tried to help her ended up in the hospital wing.
Harry had told her that Sirius wanted him to resume occulmency and she had been nagging him to go to Snape since. She knew it was cowardly of her to ask Harry to go to Snape when she had not been able to muster up the courage to talk to him.
Every day things seemed to be going downhill. Then something happened that made her forget everything else. Hagrid was hiding a giant in the forest and wanted them to teach him English once Umbridge sacked which Hermione was bound to happen any day.
It was with a huff that she sat in the library on day before the OWLS. Samantha joined her as usual.
'Hey ready for OWLS.' She said a little too cheerfully for Hermione's taste.
'I will ask you this exact same question next year and let's see what you feel.' Hermione said wearily.
'What is the matter? Severus bothered you again? I know he has been cranky as of late.'
'Samantha I have so much to worry that I forget to keep track of things I am supposed to be worrying about. I actually made a list last night and then I saw it this morning and thought I was going Barmy.'
'Hand it over maybe I could help.'
Hermione gave her the parchment from her bag
Things to Worry About
Harry is not taking Occulmency lessons.
Professor Snape is extra cranky.
Harry had a secret chat with Sirius.
Umbridge might catch me breaking a rule and expel me or Harry or Ron
Mrs. Weasely may kill us all because Harry Sponsored Fred and George
Hagrid is hiding a murderous giant in forbidden forest.
The centuars banned Hagrid to enter forbidden forest.
Hagrid will get sacked and I will have to teach English to GRAWP
I have no idea what carer I want to pursue
I will fail all my OWL.
Samatha completed reading it and stared at Hermione.
'A Giant seriously. And why do you want to teach him English.'
'Hagrid made me and Harry promise.' She said
'This is awesome. Can I come? ' Samantha asked
'Are you crazy? Your godfather will kill me.' Hermione answered clearly shocked.
'Now there is an idea. Maybe I could mention it to Severus and he could help us.'
'Or maybe I should add another item in that list, Beware of crazy friends.'
'Hermione get some sleep it may help you and I will try to worry in your behalf so you may relax during the exams.' Samantha said.
Hermione smiled at this and hugged the girl as she closed her books and left the library.
The next two weeks passed without Hermione even realising it. All she could think of was her exams. Finally the OWLs ended but not as smoothly as Hermione would have liked. Umbridge attacked Hagrid on the night of the Astronomy exam and even McGonagall ended up injured defending him. Hermione was indignant by this behaviour. She wished she could talk to Snape. He was the only person who could give her a clear picture. She only had history of magic to go and resolved to talk to him after the exams.
History of Magic exam turned out to a bigger fiasco than Astronomy. Harry had to leave the exam mid-way and Hermione was sure it was because of his scar and true enough when she met with him he had got this mad idea in his head that Sirius was held captive by Voldermort at the department of mysteries. She tried to reason with him but to no avail. Finally she convinced him to use Umbridge's Floo to check at Grimauld's place. But there luck had finally run out and they all got caught.
Severus was in his office when Draco came busting in.
'Professor Snape, The Headmistress wishes to speak to you. She is in her office.'
'What does that toad want now?' Severus thought as he walked with Malfoy to her office.
It was years of practice that made him remain an impassive face at the scene that greeted hm. Apparently Potter had tried to use her floo once again. Well he knew exactly where he was calling. His beloved godfather. Severus was aware of Harry's last jaunt with the floo. Lupin had spoken to him imploring his to continue the occulmency lessons. He had even tried to apologize in the boy's behalf. Saying that he was really affected by what he had seen and been upset at all of them. As if he cared. Thinking that they could sort out the mess for themselves he turned to leave when Potter decided to shout at him.
'He's got Padfoot!" he shouted. "He's got Padfoot at the place where it's hidden!' Severus was alarmed and jogged all the way to dungeon where he sent his Patronus immediately to Black and Dumbledore. Once he received confirmation that Black was safe and sound he ran to the Headmistress office to see if he could impart some sense in Potter. But was shocked to see Malfoy, Crab, Goyle and Parkinson all jinxed badly with the Headmistress and Potter's group nowhere in sight. Alarmed he informed Dumbledore and flooed the Headquarters to ask everyone to proceed to the ministry. He himself wanted to rush but was strictly prohibited by Dumbledore seeing as it would surely blow off his cover.
All Severus could do was mutter and pace. He had no idea how much time had passed when he received an alarm from Dumbledore informing him of the capture of the death eaters and Voldermort's public appearance. He had about a million question but the headmaster seemed in a hurry. Frustrated he walked out when Samantha came running to him.
'Sev its Hermione.' She said
For a moment Severus was stalk still.
'She is gravely injured. Unconscious in the hospital wing.' She continued and Severus could feel the air return to his lungs.
'Oh and Ron is also injured. Neville and Ginny got fixed up almost immediately and Luna managed to remain unscathed. I have no idea as to where Harry is. They say he is fine.'
But Severus had not listened to a word of all this. He almost ran all the way to the hospital wing to see the young witch. And was startled to see her lying in the hospital wing. He racked his brain to remember any other time he may have seen her so quite but nothing came to mind. She looked young and innocent but he knew she had experienced the evil world far worse than most grownups.
He knew she owed her an apology. In his pity party over Potter riffling through his memory he had ignored the girl. Maybe if he had been attentive this whole fiasco could have been avoided.
Then suddenly he realised that she was awake and staring at him. He immediately fetched madam Pomfrey but stayed as she treated the girl.
It was only after the nurse had left that he spoke.
'How are you? What exactly happened?'
'I am fine. Dolohov hit me with me with some curse. His speech was impaired so I did not receive major damage.'
'Dolohov you say. 'He spoke dangerously
'Professor, do you have any idea as to where Harry is? He must be really broken. I just don't know how to face him.' She spoke softly
'Why would Potter be upset? I thought the death eaters got and the dark lord's existence became public. It is a win for the order.'
'You are not aware.' She said in a surprised voice.
'Aware of what Miss Granger?' Severus was getting increasingly frustrated
'Sirius, He went past the veil while fighting Bellatrix.' She said in a low voice.
Severus was numb. 'Black was dead. 'He was not sure what to feel. He had hated the man his whole life. The sight of him made his blood boil but today that he was dead he felt no joy. He felt cheated. Black was dead and finally reunited with his buddy and Lily but he was still here, still paying for all his mistakes.
It was only after Miss Granger actually shook him that he returned to his senses.
'I killed him.' That's all he said.
'What?'
'I stopped Potter's Occulmency classes and that is why he died.'
'Professor it is hardly your fault.' Hermione said but Severus had already walked out.
A stunned Samantha was the only one there. She hugged Hermione and then turned and went after him.
'Are you ok?' She said when she finally found Severus standing near the lake.
'I am the reason his parents are dead and toady I killed his godfather. '
'What are you talking about? You killed no one. She said.
'Samantha you do not know me. I am a monster. I have managed to ruin everyone near me and I fear that one day I will ruin you too. Stay away from me.' He spoke his voice heavy from emotion.
'How can you say that? You are the reason I am alive and well. You are the reason I never realised that I was an orphan. You taught me what family is. '
'I am the reason you are an orphan. You think I am family do you? I am the reason you do not have a family. I am the one that made you an orphan.' He spoke as he walked away.
Samantha was shocked. Her world has just come crashing down. Tears were running unbidden from her eyes as she stood in the ground. For the first time she felt alone. 'She was an orphan'. Her mind kept repeating this over and over.
