Chapter V Part I out of II

Anthony and Edward were currently situated in Edward hospital room. Only a few hours ago was Edward being rushed in on a stretcher with Anthony on their tail asking whether not Edward was to be okay. After fighting with the hospital staff about Edward for a few minutes, Anthony realized that he was preventing them from doing their jobs and relented.

"Please, he's my best friend… Can you keep me updated on his status?" Anthony pleaded to the nurse he was arguing with.

The nurse sighed in return, but then answered "Alright, I will… but meanwhile we have to get you are room yourself. You're not looking for either" She said, thoroughly examining Anthony face. "Your left eye is swelling, it'sprobably gonna bruise, and there is a knot on the side of your forehead. Are you feeling any head pain?"

Now that Anthony thought about it, he really wasn't feeling that well. His head was throbbing in the worst possible way, his whole face ached in general and his left eye was tearing up a lot. Anthony was too engrossed in Edward;swell being to even worry about himself.

Anthony nodded, answering the nurse's question. "Yeah, a lot of things hurt actually. Maybe we should get that room…" Anthony said, after a wave of dizziness.

A few moments later Anthony was situated in his room lying down on his bed. The nurse had cleaned his face so it didn't look as bad, but Anthony was pretty sure he still looked horrible. His face was still riddled with bruises, and his left eye still throbbed in waves. The ibprophen he was given earlier did get rid of the head pain though.

Anthony hoped Edward was getting better as well. Anthony felt guilty for some reason, like this was his entire fault. Anthony thought about how he talked to the drunken man at the bar. He remembered being sarcastic. He obviously provoked the man and set this disastrous event into motion.

Anthony sighed, shifting back and forward in his bed, unable to sit still. His mind was everywhere. "I just need to get up; see how Edward is doing… that will put my mind to ease" Anthony thought, moving to sit up.

At the moment, his nurse popped back in with another older middle aged male. "Oh, no you don't you dare" The nurse reprimanded, seeing Anthony try to move out of his bed. She walked over to Anthony gently pushed onto his back. Anthony frowned, "I can't just lie here while my friend is elsewhere and I have no clue what's happening with him, you promised me that you'll keep me updated!"

The nurse sighed, "That is what I came in here for, and your friend is going to be fine. The doctors were just checking for any head injury. So, far he is completely fine."

Anthony frowned, "For now? What does that supposed to mean?"

"Well you see, your friend has suffered a slight concussion and in those situations it is unsafe to sleep so, we are keeping him up for a few hours just to be sure he is keep." The nurse explained, and after a pause continued, gesturing towards the man next to her, "Now, this is Mr. Bennett, the cop that was called to the bar, he has some questions for you. I will be back in a few minutes okay?"

Anthony nodded, at least satisfied that Edward was in good condition.

After the nurse had left, the police officer moved over to the side of Anthony's bed.

The officer cleared his throat, then said, "Sorry about the inconvenience, but this is a part of protocol. I'm going to ask you a few questions about what happened tonight"

Anthony nodded signaling him to continue.

Over the course of fifteen minutes the officer asked all sorts of questions about tonight incident including, "Do you wanna press charges?" and Anthony couldn't answer that quick enough. He immediately said yes. Anthony wanted that man to pay for what he had done. Anthony also explained in details, the events that occurred as well. The least Anthony thought he could do was make sure this man was behind bar for threatening him and his friends safety.

Anthony knew that rest wouldn't come easily if that man was out and about. Anthony never handled violence very well, and as much as he'd like to think that he could take care of himself, he knew his capabilities. He knew he couldn't handle physical confrontations well and they never ended in his favor.

Anthony wished that he was a little bit stronger so that he didn't have people like Edward taking the damage and blows for him. There is nothing nobody can say to him to make him think otherwise, but there was no use of thinking If I was this or that, all he could do right now is make sure he could get this guy behind bars and keeps him and Edward safe.

After the officer was done questioning him, Anthony was just plain exhausted. His room was quiet except for the sounds of the various machines making beeps and buzzes in his room. And though Anthony fought it, the sounds were strangely calming and slowing lured him to sleep.

Anthony woke up to a slight pressure on his wrist, like someone was grabbing at him. Anthony mind automatically went haywire and instantly went to the moment were the drunk man roughly grabbed his wrist. That memory instantly roused him from his sleep and Anthony shot up with a shout, "Let go of me!" He screamed. His fright sending waves of adrenaline throughout his very core.

"Mr. Wilson, please, calm down…" Anthony heard, and then there were hands restraining his arms, but that only pushed him to struggle even more.

"Mr. Wilson, open your eyes. You are safe, you'll see that."

Anthony halted his struggling, puzzled by the words. 'Open my eyes?' Anthony thought.

Anthony slowing opened his eye lids, his eyes hurt and sensitive to the bright lights of his room. The first thing that appeared in front of him in was his nurse and that relieved him to no end. Anthony realized that he was breathing quickly and heavily and calmed his breath.

Anthony sighed, leaning back against his pillow. "I'm so sorry about that" he apologized. "I thought…" Anthony sighed once more, shaking his head at himself, "I don't know what I was thinking…"

The nurse smiled, "its okay, you and your friend had just suffered a traumatic event. It's not surprising that it would have some after effects"

Anthony felt slightly insulted that the nurse was talking to him like that. Like she knew him or something. Anthony went to school for this, of course he had already known this already.

"Yeah, sure… Well, what did you need with me?" Anthony asked.

"Well, you told me to inform you of any new changes to your friend's condition."

Anthony instantly perked up at that, "Yes, I did. Is there something wrong now?" He asked, obviously worried and expecting that worst.

The nurse chuckled, "No, the opposite actually, your friend is asking to see you. He is in good enough condition now. Although, he will have to stay overnight for observation just to be sure", she said.

Anthony nodded quickly, "Yes, Of course… So, I can go see him then?" His excitement uncontained.

The nurse nodded in return, "Yes, you can, and can leave as well. Most of your serious injuries have been dealt with. You just need to avoid strenuous activity alright?"

"I will… and nurse? Wait, I never asked your name…"

She smirked, "Oh, I thought you were just impersonal like that, I'm Rebecca Williams."

Anthony smiled, "Well, thank you, Rebecca, I really appreciate what've you've done for me."

"No problem, it's part of the job…"

Anthony had a hard time approaching Edward hospital room. He was trying to keep calm and not get overly emotional, but that was difficult considering their circumstances. Anthony wasn't even sure if Edward would want to see him.

Maybe he would blame Anthony for the reason this all happened. Anthony sure felt guilty about it all, so it wouldn't be strange if Edward agreed he shared the fault.

Anthony took a deep breath as he got even closer to the room. It was completely quiet, excluding the beeps and buzzes of all the machines in the room.

When Anthony finally made his way into the room, Edward was looking down at his cell phone hesitantly, eyes narrowed and deep in thought. Anthony felt relieved that Edward's injuries looked to be just as bad as his, meaning that they weren't that bad and could be managed easily.

Edward's pale skin tone made the bruises on his forehead more noticeable, there small cuts and scratches around his cheek along with a busted lip. This all made Anthony angry all over again, but he pushed away those feelings deciding that this was not the time for that.

"H-hey, Edward" Anthony said quietly wanting to test the waters, walking a little bit closer to his bed.

Edward gasped, instantly closing his phone and looking a tad bit embaresed which greatly confused Anthony. Then came another gasped when Anthony and Edward made eye contact.

"Oh my god, Anthony… Your… your face, your eye… you look horrible" Edward said in horror.

Anthony wasn't expecting that response, but he decided to go with it. "Oh, Edward… you know how complements make me blush" He joked in return. Edward was correct though, he didn't really look that well either.

His face was riddled with the same bruises as Edward's, but the one noticeable difference was his swollen discolored left eye and his normally straight hair was in complete disarray. Random strands of hair sticking out in several different directions.

Edward did not find his comment humorous, his worried expression still frozen in place. Anthony sighed, "Edward, you know that I bruise very easily, it's not as bad as it seems." Anthony didn't want the attention on himself. He wasn't the one in the bed with the concussion. It's obvious that Edward has suffered the most damage here. Not that Anthony was comparing or anything.

Anthony took a chair from the side of the room and moved it over close to Edward's bed, sitting down in it to be comfortable and closer to Edward at the same time.

"Now, you on the other hand" Anthony said pointing at Edward, who was lying in bed listening attentively, is the one currently in the hospital bed, let's worry about you now… How are you feeling"

Edward frowned, "I'm… I'm fine. I just… I was so worried about you. I mean, look at you… You have a black eye…" Edward's fist, in his lap clenched, "That man, he hit you hard. Anthony, I'm so sorry, I pushed you into all of this. I just thought you needed to have a distraction… from…y'know… him"

Emmett.

Anthony knew instantly who he was referring to and he was a little nervous and relieved that he remembered.

"You didn't push me into any of this, Edward. If anything, this is my fault, you only offered that advice because you wanted to help me out. It's not your fault that I have these…. Feelings"

Anthony didn't even wanna talk about this anymore. Anytime Emmett is bought up, Anthony's mood plummeted .Anthony still thinks about the day he decided to cut his ties with him. He thinks about the look on his face. That sorry, pleading look that practically screamed, "Don't do this" it was one of the hardest things Anthony had to do.

He felt like a failure and it wasn't even because he was incapable. Anthony has always done his job very well and he prided himself on that ability. Then Emmett came around and he started feeling things that he shouldn't had been feeling.

"Anthony… I don't remember much from last night besides that fool, butIf I said anything out of place to you, know that I didn't mean it…. I was just surprised. I mean… Anthony, that's not…" Edward shook his head, "It doesn't matter what I think, what matters is that you know that this is normal… Being attracted to someone doesn't have to be an issue. You should know this and I'm pretty sure you've told this to others. Being attracted to other is a completely normal human quality. It's not like you have plans to act on it."

Anthony frowned, no... he didn't have any plans, but he has thought about, even dreamed of it. "I know that Edward, it's just that I've never had this problem before and I am so confused right now. I never had a problem I couldn't rationalize. I don't know how to handle this."

Edward shook his head, "It's simple, You don't "handle it", you accept that some things can be changed and you move on."

And those words, yet so simple, struck Anthony at his core.

Edward was right, he just needed to get over it. There really wasn't any use on dwelling on his attraction to Emmett. Physical attraction happened all the time and it wasn't like he was in love with him or anything.

"I feel silly now" Anthony said. "I never thought... those simple words, I can't believe I let this hold me down for so long."

What Anthony really thought was the problem here was that he took himself to seriously. He put himself on this high pedestal an the moment he begins to do any worry than that, the world falls around him. He just needed to accept that he was just as flawed as every other human being.

"Thank you Edward, really."

Edward smiled and nodded, "Yeah, no problem... actually..." Edward sat up, leaning forward toward Anthony, "Well, for my great wisdom I have passed on to you, I think you should do me"

Anthony chuckled, arching an eyebrow, "Oh? Is that so? What is this favor? No. wait... You want me to give dating another try?"

Anthony felt as if it an improvement that he was able to joke about that.

"Haha, got jokes don't you? And, no. That was not the favor. I want you to substitute for my class tomorrow since I obviously won't be able to"

Anthony perked up at the idea. "Edward, you know I wouldn't mind doing that for you and plus it'll be good for me to check out for students. I've been meaning to have a few sessions with him of them."

"Oh, well good. It'll feel weird though, I've never missed a single day of class before and I had a quiz that I was going to give." He said pouting.

"Oh no, Edward... the kids will be devestated!" Anthony gasped, then laughing at Edwards pouting over his teasing.

"And Edward, I don't know if you remember or not, but a long long time ago, maybe a 100 years, we were those students, and if I remember correctly, we absolutely hated quizzes."

"Oh, hush you, I see that asides from that ugly face of yours, you are making a full recovery, and I am getting apprehensive about you subbing in for me. I don't know if I'm comfortable leaving my students with you."

Anthony gasped, placing a hand over his chest, an innocent expression, "Me? What do you think I'm going to do?" In the corner of his mind if chest ached at the thought. He knew Edward was joking thought was he tried not to be hurt about it.

"I don't want you looking my students with them psychologist eyes of yours, psychoanalyzing them all..."

Our banter continued back and forth after that. Edward was going to stay at the hospital overnight to make a full recovery and Anthony was going to substitute for his class.

Anthony listened as Edward went over his lesson plans and instructions for that day. Anthony didn't have any experience in teaching so Edward told him to give some group assignments in the text book and that would keep them occupied.

Even though at the moment, everything seem fine with the two of them Anthony paid close attention to Edward. Anthony trained himself to watch for certain markers... behaviors that one would exhibit after an event like this. Fake smiles, passive aggressive behavior, facades, and subtle flinches at physical contact. Anthony was even showing some of those behaviors so he knew for a fact that would defintely be experiencing the same eventually.

That wouldn't matter though. Anthony will be watching over Edward and planning ways to help him cope when it does happen. Anthony defintely couldn't hold his own in issues of the physical nature, but this? This was his area of expertise, he could help this way. He wasn't helpless in conflicts of this nature.

Anthony will have everything covered and will be prepared in the future. The only thing that Anthony didn't have covered, was himself.

Who was going to take care of and look after him?

The next day Anthony found himself in the schoolfaculty's mens bathroom, his reflections staring back at him in the mirror. What he saw saddened him. He was hopeful. He was expecting that after a night of resting and following the doctor's instruction to apply a ice to his swollen eye, that he would make some progress in his physical appearance.

Anthony may have been going to hard on himself, but he felt like he didn't look any better than yesterday. There was still bruises and marks on his face. Yes, they were fading, but they were still highly visible. And his eye, just as worst. The throbbing had stopped atleast and he had fixed his hair back to the his normal state of having it combed back. His brown locks down his neck. That was one thing he could manage.

Honestly, he didn't necessarily care that much about his appearance. Well, he did to certain degree like we all, but his main problem was what to come with his appearance as it was now. There would be strange looks, questions and gossip. He wouldn't even know how to answer any questions. And what was he to tell them? He had gotten beaten up at a bar?

Anthony didn't view himself a prideful being, but he still had diginity. Diginity that would be thrown away if any found out what happened. Especailly with these sterotypical views that men should be able to hold their own in a fight. Barely, is there times where men and coddled and pitied after a fight has gone wrong. Not that Anthony was looking to be pitied or anything.

Now, Anthony is here, in the school's bathroom with some makeup and concealer and his hands and he is feeling so silly that he wants to laugh. He is really here contenplating whether or not he wants to apply make up.

What was the use anyway? Anthony thought.

Concealed or not, the bruises will be there, the events of that night would have still happened. And if people didn't catch on from his appearance, they would catch on from his actions because Anthony wasn't okay as he thought he was.

He just wanted to be strong. Maybe fight through this. His face serves as a personal reminder of that day. Someone had laid hands on him with intentions to hurt, to injury or maybe worse. There were so many what if situations spawning in his mind.

What if the authorities weren't called?

What if his or Edward's injuries were worse?

What if Edward's actually not alright?

He didn't like these feelings he was having. Like there was someone out to get him

Anthony took a deep breath, feeling picked all of the sudden. He now regrets coming to work today. He obviously needed to be home and alone were his was 100% sure he was safe.

Anthony looked down to his feet, not able to stand to look at his face, he breathed in and out, counting down from 10 in his mind. Following the breathing exercise he often told others to help them calm down.

'I can do this, I don't have to answer anyone's questions and most important of all no ones out to hurt me anymore, I'm safe' he said to himself

Anthony glanced back at himself in the mirror, "I'm safe" He said, this time out loud. He repeated it multiple more times and even more until he actually believed it.
