Hello! I'm sooo sorry. I haven't posted in literally FOREVER. I just took a long break from fanfiction, I guess. But I'm back, and I've made other stories! Make sure to read them, especially The Holes In My Heart. It's a story about Johanna. About her life before, during, and after the rebellion and how she got to be the spiteful and abrasive person she turned out to be.
Anyways, I hope you enjoy the chapter!
The plan was simple: I would distract the careers with a smokey fire while Katniss gets rid of the food. She's not sure how she'll do it, but she assures me that she'll figure it out when she gets there. I just nodded as we scavenged for wood to burn for the fire.
I teased her a bit about Peeta and she would playfully laugh. I swore that sometimes she looked at me like she had known me for my whole life. I don't know what made her do that, but in a way, it made me comfortable. I knew she could trust me.
We chatted about our daily lives back where we come from. It is strictly prohibited to visit other districts. I've never been outside the fences of district 11. She seemed shocked about how strict peacekeepers are in 11.
"I'm actually friends with a few of them. Even trade with them," she told me casually.
My eyes widen. "I'm afraid to even look in their direction," I say with a shudder.
"I guess it's just that there's so much poverty that they are just looser on the rules." I nodded. Back home, we'd get whipped so much for being out of our homes after 9:00.
When Katniss asked me what my favorite thing in the entire world is, I replied with music. No hesitation.
"Really?" She considers this, glancing up at the sky. "I used to sing with my dad when I was little, but we don't do that anymore."
"That's why I'm so glad the mockingjays are here. They gave me somebody to sing with."
"Mockingjays?" She asks, her eyebrows raised.
"You haven't seen them?" I gasp. "They're everywhere!" I exclaim. I point to her mockingjay pin. "That's the main reason I chose to trust you." I sing my four note tune to the birds, the same one I sing at home. And they repeat it back to me. I catch Katniss smiling.
Katniss takes her pin off and starts to hand it to me. I gently push it away. "Oh no, I don't want it. I trust you with it on. It looks much better on you, anyways." She nods and puts it back on. "I have this," I say as I reveal my woven necklace from under my shirt. "My sisters gave it to me. It was my reaping present."
When we finish collecting all the wood and separate them into three piles, all of them very far apart from each other, we start to say our goodbyes.
Katniss puts her hand on my shoulder. She could tell I was looking sad. It was true; I was sad. I had just gotten an ally and we were already separating. I knew we'd see each other again, though.
"Hey," her voice was soothing - it sounded like the first time we saw each other in the arena. "Don't worry, we'll see each other by supper by the stream where we ate our first meal." She hands me her sleeping bag. I squint at it.
"Won't you get cold?" I ask.
"Nah, I'll grab something at the cornucopia." I hesitate, but grab the bag.
I'm about to turn around and leave when I decide we need a signal. They always worked back in district 11. So I teach Katniss my four note tune. "It means that we're fine, but we might be a little late." She nods and I embrace her suddenly. "Be careful," I whisper.
"You too," she replies, as she lets go. I turn around and make my way to the first fire, glancing behind me once to watch her walk away.
I waited about ten minutes when I got to the first fire. Once I lit the match under them, the'd erupt with flame. I wanted to make sure that Kaniss would be at the lake where the careers kept camp.
I lit the fire and walked away toward the second fire. I climbed a tree and waited for the careers to approach the first fire. Hopefully Katniss had already dumped a good amount of their supplies into the lake.
Finally, the group approaches the fire, looking confused as ever. The boy from two, Cato, started swearing like a madman. "We should wait for the tribute to come back," he tells his group as he walks behind a hidden bush. "They'll have to be back soon." I giggle, unable to hold it in.
I jumped from tree to tree until I reached the second fire. I swiftly climbed down the tree and lit the fire, climbing back up to a tree. A little while later, the boy from one showed up at the second fire. The rest of the group must have still been waiting at the other fire for the tribute to come back. Marvel, I believe his name is, glanced around him, looking up the to the sky the same way he looked at Katniss right after she climbed the tree and dropped the tracker jackers on them.
Then he spotted me.
I gulped. He looked me right in the eyes and smirked. I jumped to another tree. His eyes continued to follow me. I was terrified, but I would keep them away from Katniss, right?
After a lot of tree hopping, I think I finally lost him. I sighed of relief. But I didn't know where I was. Nowhere near the third fire, that is. That chase took a long time. I sang my four note tune to the birds. They repeated it, spreading it throughout the arena. I was heavily breathing. I was lost. Would I make it to the stream before dinner? I'd probably know how to get there if I travel on foot, so I hop down from the tree and begin walking to the stream. Or, at least, what I think is the direction of the stream. I would be able to hear the sound of running water better on the ground.
Suddenly, I hit a snare. I fall to the ground and a net surrounds me, leaving me tangled and prying at the knots.
Oooooooh! You all know what happens in the next chapter… :( My next chapter WILL be my last chapter. D: So sorry. But everything has to end, even a little girl's life.
DO remember to follow and favorite, (ANNNND REVIEWWWWWW) for it will me happy. Have a great day! I will update the unfortunate ending as soon as possible!
