Ally's POV
If you're feeling down or weak
You can always count on me
I will always pick you up
Nothing's ever gonna change
Nothing's gettin'-
"Honey!"
I groaned in annoyance. I hate it when people interrupt my songwriting. I looked up to where I heard my dads voice.
"Honey! I'm going to a mall meeting at the food court. I won't be gone to long. If you need anything Cathy is in the office. Be safe and please be careful. I don't want to find you laying on the couch with a sprained ankle again."
I nodded. "Don't worry dad it won't happen again."
"Okay it better not. Well I have to go, bye! Love you!" He kissed my cheek and left Sonic Boom.
I laughed. "Love you too."
I closed my songbook and sighed. What to do? My weekends are so boring. Wow, I'm so bored I'm talking to myself.
I made my way around the counter and started walking up the stairs slowly. I opened the door to the practice room and walked to familiar spot in the corner where the piano was. I sat on the bench and let my fingers run along the keys. I close my eyes and let the music pour out of my heart. As my fingers run up and down the piano keys I get lost in the music and start to sing.
I'm feeling higher than the sunrise,
Feeling lovelier than midnight,
And I wouldn't change a thing
I'm standing taller now than ever,
Everything from here looks better,
No I wouldn't change a thing
You can try to bring me down,
To shake my soul and take my crown
I'll shine brighter,
I'll shine brighter, brighter, oh
I've learned I'm a shooting star
And no one can change who we are,
And no one can take that away
I know that I'm good enough
And I know that I'm beautiful,
And no one can take that away from me
I'm feeling prettier than velvet,
Soaring higher than the heavens,
And I wouldn't change a thing
Look up to the sky you'll see me,
Almost feels like I am dreaming,
Oh, I wouldn't change a thing
Oh, they can try to bring me down,
To shake my soul and take my crown
I'll shine brighter,
I'll shine brighter, brighter, oh
I've learned I'm a shooting star
And no one can change who we are,
And no one can take that away
I know that I'm good enough
And I know that I'm beautiful,
And no one can take that away
There's no shadow hanging over me,
I'm gonna live what I believe.
There's no taking away
What I'm feeling at this moment.
For the first time I know I'm free,
I'm feeling beautiful and I can dream
No one's stopping me
I've learned I'm a shooting star
And no one can change who we are,
And no one can take that away
I know that I'm good enough
And I know that I'm beautiful,
And no one can take that away
Yeah, I've learned I'm a shooting star
And no one can change who we are,
And no one can take that away
I know that I'm good enough
And I know that I'm beautiful,
And no one can take that away
I freeze immediately when I here clapping coming from behind me.
"Wh-Who's there?" I asked shakily.
"Wow Dawson, I didn't think you'd have the voice." I heard the oh so familiar voice.
"Uh... Thanks Austin." I said looking down trying to hide my face. "What are you doing here?"
"Well I was looking for some strings for my guitar." He said nonchalant.
"Oh well um there is some downstairs and I didn't know you play guitar."
"Yeah I can play any instrument actually." He said proudly.
"Oh really." I said blankly not believing a single word he said.
"It's true! Watch test me." He said challenging me. I felt movement next to me and figured he must have sat next to me on the piano bench. I turned and faced him more to where I had last heard his voice and I felt him do the same thing.
"Okay." I nodded. I sat there staring forwardly thinking of a good instrument to challenge him. I could feel his eyes staring at mine.
"How about the violin?" I challenged.
"Yep." He stated simply.
My eyes narrowed at him. "Okay then. What about the trumpet?"
"Yes."
"Cello."
"Uh-huh."
"Drums."
"Yes ma'am."
"Guitar."
"You already know the answer to that one."
"Flute."
"Easy."
"Clarinet."
"Guess."
"No?"
"Yes."
"Really!"
"No."
"Uh! Fine last one, piano."
"I am an expert on that." He said mater factually.
I scoffed. "Sure you are."
"I am!" He defended.
I rolled my eyes and crossed my arms over my chest. "Prove it."
"Is that a challenge ?" He questioned and by the way he said it I could tell he was smirking.
"I don't know is it ?" I said smirking as well.
"It sure sounds like it."
"Well then," I shrugged. "let the games begin."
I felt him turn around from facing me to face the piano now. I sit there waiting for him to play with my smirk still plastered on my face and my arms crossed.
My smirk began to fade away when I heard him start to play. I have heard this song before played by my piano teacher when I was six, but the way Austin played it made it sound so meaningful. His fingers glided smoothly over the piano keys creating the most beautiful sound to fill the room. He played as if his life depended on it.
When he finished I was left speechless.
"What's wrong? Cat caught your tongue?" He teased.
My face flushed red. "Psh! I can do better than that."
"Then let's see you try."
I took a deep breath. I started to position my fingers in the familiar spot. I can do this. I have nothing to be afraid of. Oh wait. I have stage fright. Nope I can't do this.
"I can't do it." I muttered putting my head in my hands.
"Why? You were about to start." Austin questioned.
"I um I-I-I have stage fright." I blurted out nervously.
"Really? But you were singing and playing the piano when I was standing at the door."
"That's because I didn't know you were there."
"Well pretend I'm not here." He said simply.
"Austin I can't do that." I said looking up to where I heard his voice.
"Yes you can. Just pretend you're all by yourself in this room with the piano, your book that you always carry around-"
"-and a giant jar of pickles!" I said happily. I could feel his stare on me.
"Pickles?" He questioned in disgust.
"Yeah it's my favorite kind of food." I sighed wishing I had some pickles now.
"Well I prefer pancakes." He said proudly. "But that doesn't matter, so are you ready to play now?"
I took a deep breath in and ran his words through my mind again. Okay I can do this. I can do this. I positioned my hands again on the piano and closed my eyes. I started to play the familiar song that my dad has once taught me when I was four. I heard my dad playing the song one day on the piano and I fell in love with it. I would ask my dad to play the song every night. One day my dad asked me if I wanted to learn how to play the song on the piano and I said yes. I spent everyday trying to learn the song perfectly like my dad. Once I learned the song I played it everyday. What made the song special to me was that it was the very first song I played on the piano. Without the piano I wouldn't have been writing songs like I would be now.
I came to an end when I finished playing the song. I let out the breath I was holding in and let my hands drop in my lap. I did it. I performed in front of someone without freaking out.
"Ally..." Austin started he sounded breathless. "Ally... That was... Amazing."
I looked down at my lap. I'm still trying to get over the fact that I just performed in front of someone.
"Since when did you learn how to play like that." Austin asked barely a whisper.
"Since I was four. It was actually the first song I've ever played on the piano." I muttered.
"Wow..." Austin said in awe. "Ally you have a gift that you are extremely amazing at."
"Thanks." I muttered again trying to hide the blush on my face.
"Well I guess I'm not as that much of an expert on the piano because you truly are an expert."
I looked up towards his voice and smiled. I could feel his eyes staring straight into mine and could tell he was smiling too.
"Awww!" We heard someone coo behind us. I turned toward the voice.
"Dez?" Austin questioned. I know Dez he is Austin's best friend. The nice but... Odd one.
"What are you doing here and have you been sanding there the whole time?" Austin asked Dez.
"Well I was walking around the mall when I came across this store Sonic Boom. I thought it was a funny name for a store so I went inside to see if they have any stink bombs since bombs go BOOM! But when I got inside I found out it was a music store. I was really disappointed since the name of the store didn't match the store at all. So I went to go look upstairs for the person who owns this store to talk to them about different names for the store. That is when I heard you two up here so I secretly was standing at the doorway recording everything. So yes, I was standing here the whole time. But you should thank me because now you have some video to put in your project. So your welcome!" He said goofily.
I stared at his direction with my mouth dropped. I then began to chew my hair. He heard me play. He was watching me.
"Um Ally? Are you okay? You're eating your hair." Austin stifled a laugh.
"Oh sorry." I spit out my hair. "It's something I do when I get nervous."
"Why are you nervous?" Dez questioned like a little kid.
"Well you just herd me play. I have never played in front of anyone! Playing in front of two people is enough to make me cry. Playing in front of a crowd would make me throw up on the entire audience." I said shivering at the thought of performing in front of a big crowd.
"Why do you have stage fright?" Austin asked curiously.
"It's a long story." I said looking down.
"I have time." I heard Dez sit down on one of the couches in the room.
"I don't want to talk about it." I muttered.
"Fine then, don't tell me." Dez said over dramatically.
I continued to keep my head down and I could feel Austin staring at me intensively like if he was trying to solve a puzzle.
"Well I'm going to go to the food court. Do you want to come Austin?" Dez asked.
"Um yeah. Do you want to come with us Ally?" Austin asked me still staring at me.
"Um no thanks. I'll just stay here and watch the store." I said looking up a little.
"Oh come on! You can get someone else to watch the store can you?" Austin asked.
"Yes, but-"
"No buts, you're coming with us." He said grabbing my wrist and pulling me up with him.
"But-"
"What did I say?" He warned.
"Fine." I sighed. I grabbed his arm for better grip and he lead me down the stairs carefully.
"Hehe, Austin you said buts!" Dez snickered.
Austin and Dez both laughed their heads off all the way to the food court. I rolled my eyes but smiled anyways. Boys.
