Ch. 7 - Can I Keep Him?

Permafrost was now faced with a large snow covered beast as she stood to defend Danny. As it stood on all four legs its angry red eyes sharpened in her direction and it let another nasty growl. She pointed the lance towards it as it started forward on one point with a threat. "Back now! I will not hesitate to show you the true might of a FarFrozen warrior!" The large beast returned her threat with a roar and shook off the snow. What now stood before her was a large, green, ferocious dog who seemed to be hungry for frosty yeti.

Danny looked on with wide eyes from behind her. "Is that a….. doggie?" The spectral hound took a swipe at her with its large paws which she easily parried with her well-made lance.

"Alright Danny, I need you to run back towards the village and let Frostbite know what happened! I should be able to handle this myself until you do!" She thrust forward with her lance and the dog jumped back in kind. Danny couldn't help but to just watch as she continued to force the dog back, seeming stuck in place. "What are you waiting for Little One!?" As she turned back to shout her warning the dog took its chance and pinned her to the ground. It bared its fangs over the FarFrozen as it began to drool. "Dumb beast!"

She began to freeze up its paws which were holding her down but one more shake was able to break the ice before it could get too solid. As the dog was about to wrap its jaws around here Danny threw a snowball at it. "NO, you big meanie! Don't eat Miss Frosty!" He threw another snowball and this one got the dogs attention in a big way as it jumped off of Permafrost and towards Danny. "Oh no…." His eyes widened as he saw the dog inbound and he crouched down in place with his hands over his head.

He fashioned an ice stick in one hand and used it to help guard himself from the dog's incoming attack. He waited for its strike but strangely enough it never came. He peeked through his arms to see the large dog not growling or baring its fangs, but sniffing him. He uncovered himself to see exactly what the dog was up to and was more than a big surprised when the dogs nose followed the ice stick in his right hand. He moved it around a bit more and the dog's gaze followed. "Huh?"

He then started to wave it in the dog's face and Permafrost, who had now recovered and was watching, was just as confused. "What is it doing?"

Danny let a smile cross his face as he began to jump around with the stick playfully. "I think…. He wants to play! Wanna play doggie?" The large dog bend down in a playful pose and barked it's reply. Danny then turned and threw the ice stick as far as he could. "Fetch!" The ghostly dog happily complied as it ran off and caught the stick during its short flight through the air. "Oh wow! You're good!" The dog landed and turned to charge the boy with the stick in its teeth.

Permafrost looked on in even more confusion as the dog dropped the stick in front of Danny and the boy picked it up. "What in the Ghost Zone is going on?"

Danny threw the stick again as far as he could. "He's a good doggie Miss Frosty! He was just cranky cause we woke him up from his nap."

The dog brought the stick back again and Danny threw it once more as Permafrost approach the boy. "So…. Its playing?"

Danny nodded as the dog dash for him again. "Uh-huh, cause doggies love to play fetch." Permafrost watched a few more rounds before she noticed the dog begin to limp as it ran back and forth. It seems that this large beast was injured before they even ran into it… could that be why it was resting in such a place? The dog finally dropped the stick for the last time and plopped back on the ground. It turned and began to lick at one of its hind paws which looked to be burned. "Are you okay doggie?" Danny looked at it's paw curiously and the dog whined.

Permafrost placed her claw on Danny's shoulder. "He seems to be injured Little One."

Danny stood on his tip toes and pat the dog's head as best he could. "It's alright Doggie. We can make your foot all better back at our home." The dog barked and then proceeded to lick the little halfa in happiness. "Awe! That tickles!" Permafrost couldn't help but smile at Danny as he was continually licked by the fearsome beast turned playful pup. Danny pat his nose this time and the dog started to glow.

Permafrost almost made a dash for Danny out of reflex before she noticed the dog's form was becoming smaller. Before she knew it the large monster dog was now a little puppy and was now licking Danny's hand. "So cool! The big doggie's now a puppy!" He picked him up in his little arms and rubbed his face against the dogs who returned the gesture.

Permafrost began to become a bit more curious with how the dog ended up here than its strange ability to change size; after all, this is the Ghost Zone. What was it doing here of all places and why did it come? Who or what injured it? She was snapped out of her thoughts by little Danny as he tugged at her waist cloth. "Miss Frosty! Let's go!" He then turned and headed off towards the village with the dog in his arms.

"Where are you going Little One?"

Danny was humming a bit as he responded. "We need to go home and help this puppy!"

Permafrost just watched as he continued on through the snow with the puppy watching her over his little shoulders. "I have a bad feeling about this…" She mumbled to herself as she began to follow him.

Back at the village Danny was quick to bring it to the medical ward though it seemed that no one was home. Permafrost turned on the light while Danny placed the dog up on the examination table. Permafrost reached out for the dog to get a better look at its leg but it seemed against that and growled. "No doggie. She has to look at it or she can't help. It's gonna hurt at first but then it'll get better I promise." He soothed the dog by patting its head at that seemed to do the trick as it focused more on Danny and less on Permafrost.

She reached into a drawer and rummaged around a bit. When she didn't find what she was looking for she opened the next drawer and smiled as she brought a jar up on the counter. "Here we go."

Danny looked over to the jar. "What is it? Medicine?"

She nodded as she took off the cap. "Yes, it's for burns." She took up a pair of tweezers and a cotton ball, dunking it into the liquid, and then applied it to the burn on the dog's hind leg.

The dog let out a whine in response but Danny kept it calm. "It'll be alright doggie." Once she finished with the cotton ball she pulled out some gauze which she used to wrap it up tight.

Once she was sure it was on good she pat the now calm dog. "There we go little dog." It seemed far more amicable about her now and was happy to lick her claw like it did Danny. "Not so bad when you're not growling at me."

Danny laughed. "No, cause he's a good doggie."

She sighed as she thought about Danny and how he seemed to be getting very attached to this dog. She could only guess at how Frostbite would react to it. Speaking of Frostbite though.. "Alright Little One. I'm sure Frostbite is ready for your afternoon practice."

Danny jumped in unbridled joy at the mention of that. "Oh yeah!" He turned to leave the room before he froze and looked back to the dog. "But what about the doggie?"

Permafrost waved him off. "Don't worry, I'll look after him while you're gone. He'll still be here when you return."

He backed away slowly with sad expression. He didn't want to leave the puppy, but he had to meet Frostbite for his lessons… "Stay with Miss Frosty okay doggie? I'll come back." He turned in left with only a lite whimper following him as he did so.

"Good job Little One. You've improve quite a great deal." Frostbite messed the little halfa's hair a bit as he held up his newest ice creation. He had been working on making intricate things with ice and he had just finished a crude dog sculpture. He danced around a bit with Frostbite's praise while holding the ice creation. It seemed it had all gone to his head and it wasn't long before he seemed to space out from it.

He had a bad habit of getting distracted near the end of his practices and this time he was so happy he jumped into the air. "Frostbite's smile quickly turned to one of surprise as Danny didn't fall back down but instead he started to float about in a little happy dance like fashion. "Oh Little One, marvelous!"

Danny opened his eyes and realized that he was floating. At first he was so surprised that he dropped the dog made of ice, but then he was quickly taken in by the euphoric feeling of being airborne. "I'm flying!"

As his happiness peaked his floating became shaky. "Careful Little One. If you get too distracted you'll fall." Danny wobbled a bit in the air as he floated over to Frostbite. It seemed harder as he concentrated more and more before he just dropped and luckily he fell right into Frostbite's arms. "What happened?" He pouted a bit in his arms.

"It's alright, you'll get it. That was your best flight yet." Though he gave him a grand smile in consoling fashion it didn't have much of an effect as he climbed out of Frostbite's arms.

"But…. I wanna fly now."

Frostbite kneeled down to him and pat him on the head. "Patience Little One. I promise that it will all come with time." He gave him another smile and this one was able to spread to Danny as he picked him up onto his shoulder. "Now let's get you some dinner." Danny threw one hand in the air as he used the other one to hold onto Frostbite's horn.

Frostbite took hold of the door knob and looked back to Danny who was trying his hardest to cover up his yawn. "Alright, here we are."

"But I'm not sleepy yet Frosty." Danny whined in a sleepy fashion.

"Could have fooled me Little One." He laughed a bit as he opened the door. No sooner did he have it open did a green blurr blast past him and smack right into Danny. "What in the Ghost Zone!"

"No! That tickles doggie!" He watched as the small dog pinned the little halfa to the ground and licked his face.

Though he wasn't entirely sure why a dog was in Danny's room to begin with he was sure Danny had something to do with it. "An just what do we have here?" He now had the face of a stern parent as he waited for an answer from Danny who responded with a sheepish grin.

He got up and picked the dog up as well. "Me and Miss Frosty found him while we were playing this morning. He was hurt and we fixed him."

Frostbite raised his brow. "Uh-huh….. and?"

Danny gave him his most adorable pleading look as he asked. "Can I keep him Frosty?"

The FarFrozen's stern expression could only hold out for so long against such a face as the one adorned on the little halfa, and so he eventually sighed in submission. "Well….. I don't see the harm in it…" He scratched at his ear a bit. "But it will be your responsibility to care for him and keep him out of trouble understand?"

Danny was quick to nod in agreement and he hugged the dog tightly. "Yay! I get to keep you doggie!"

Frostbite then moved to pet the dog himself which surprisingly enough didn't seem to bother the dog in the slightest. "You have a name yet?"

Danny held the dog up in shock. "Oh, I forgot….. what should I name him?" His face formed a serious expression as he thought up a name. He walked into his room with the dog in his arms while still think when he stopped right at the center of the room. "I know! Your name is Cujo cause of the way you were cranky at first and now you're good." The dog seemed happy and showed it with a lick to the boy's face.

He then walked over to his bed and placed the dog on it, climbing up right after. Frostbite came over next to tuck him in under the covers and placed his cloak on the bed post. "Alright now it's bed time."

Danny yawned as he rolled over under the blanket. "Yes Frosty.." The newly dubbed Cujo was now curled up beside him as the little tike closed his eyes. "Good night Frosty….. and Cujo."

Frostbite then left after turning off the lights, and one last peak at the two of them curled up together on the bed. "Good night Little One."

Awe... I had so much fun with this one and the whole 'can I keep him thing' classic! Now Danny can have a new friend to keep him company during those times when Frostbite can't be there.
