Chapter VII
Humphrey's P.O.V.
"This is bad, this is so bad!" My heart began to race as panic shot through my veins. I began to scan my surroundings frantically searching. I looked over at Amber to see that she was oblivious to the imminent danger and had her eyes fixed upon the grazing caribou. I nudged her gently with my shoulder trying my best not to make any abrupt movements. She looked over at me and she immediately knew something was wrong when she saw the fear in my eyes. I wiggled my nose trying to signal to her to try and pick up the same scent that I did. She closed her eyes and began to inhale the crisp, cool air processing all the different scents. Her eyes shot open and they were filled with fear just as mine.
Wolves!
We began to look around trying to figure out the location of the undiscovered wolves. I was trying my best not to turn my head too much in fear of revealing my position to the other wolves. Moving anything in an abnormal fashion would easily pick up the eagle eyes of a trained Alpha instantly showing our whereabouts. I than realized that the wind was blowing from our rear carrying their scent straight to the caribou.
"Great, how could this get any worse?"
Being Omegas, we didn't even remember to ensure the wind blew towards us so our scents didn't get carried over to the prey we were stalking. The caribou would have picked up our scents if we took a few more steps forward which would cause them to run before we would have been able to reveal ourselves. However, a trained Alpha would not forget to do something as simple as that so that only meant they weren't stalking the caribou, they were stalking us!
I knew there was no point of hiding anymore so I looked over at Amber and yelled, "Run!"
We sprinted across the meadow running as fast as our legs could take us. The caribou too began to run at the sudden startle from the wolves in the area but ran in the opposite direction. I looked over at Amber to see her running close behind me and saw two wolves not far behind chasing us. Since we were only Omegas, the much more athletic Alphas could easily catch up to us. If the wind didn't carry their scents towards us, we wouldn't have been able to get this well needed head start.
"Guess these Alphas aren't too bright and forgot that little hunting tip too. But aren't there usually four wolves in a hunting party instead of just-"
My thoughts got cut short as two more wolves jumped out from the grass in front of us and began to give chase as well. Ambush! Well that answered all my questions; they wanted us to smell their scents. That's why they came up behind us instead of coming from the side. I guess these Alphas are pretty bright after all.
Amber and I quickly changed directions and began to run another direction attempting to evade the second pair of wolves. Eventually we exited the meadow and we were running through the forest now. This made things a lot more tiring for me since we were not just running across a flat, grassy meadow. There were a lot more obstacles to evade such as trees, vines, and rocks. I turned around a large bush and came face-to-face with a stone cliff looming over me. I turned around just into time to see Amber come crashing into me.
"Ahhh!" We both screamed as we collided and crashed to the ground. We quickly got up and were about to sprint off in the opposite direction but it was too late. The wolves were already there and had us cornered against the cliff.
"We're dead." I simply stated as I backed up into the cliff behind us.
"Way to stay optimistic!" Amber nagged as she backed up into the cliff beside me.
As the wolves closed in on us, I realized that there was a vine hanging from a dead tree branch right in front of me. The dead branch was just above the four wolves closing in on us. If I pull the vine hard enough, the branch will break and crash on top of them which would give us just enough time to escape!
"I bet you guys didn't see this coming, ha-ha!" I stepped forward and latched onto the vine with my teeth and pulled as hard as I could. Although, things didn't exactly work out as I had planned. As I pulled on the vine, the branch stayed attached to the tree but the vine gave out on me. It ended up snapping which created a whip that came flying back striking me in the face.
"Owww my face." I mumbled with the vine still in my mouth. I stumbled back and with my great luck, I tripped and landed right on my tail.
"Owwww my tail! Why is it always the tail?" I exclaimed while dropping the vine to the ground. I jumped back to my paws and cradled my delicate tail petting it like a newborn pup.
After that dilemma, I than remembered the fact that we were about to get the fur ripped out of us. I looked up and saw Amber just shaking her head in disappointment while the unknown wolves looked at me with dumbfounded expressions. I kind of just sat there looking at the other wolves while they just looked back, the five of us equally confused. It was a pretty awkward moment since no one said anything for a solid 30 seconds.
Finally, one of the wolves spoke up and asked, "Um, you guys aren't Alphas are you?"
Amber and I just looked at each other before turning our attention back to them and replied in unison, "Uh, no."
When he heard this he sighed heavily and dropped his head into his paw slowly shaking his head.
