Several times Erin had to give courage to her husband because he repeatedly emphasized that he could not say it. By now Erin was fed up with his excuse. Today, the boy is released and still did not know it, although Jay visited him regularly in the last few days. Erin made it clear to her husband that if he did not tell Jesse the truth, she would do it in the evening.
Jay nervously stroked his hair back. He sat in the Sierra in front of the Med. Restless, he tapped his fingers against the dashboard. He took a few deep breaths in and out. This feeling of fear was strange to him. What if the boy refuses him? He would most like to take him under the foster-child aspect so that Jesse does not know the truth. He is no longer a toddler who is excited to meet his dad. Jesse is almost a teenager and will be skeptical about the new situation. It has been one and a half weeks since Camila was murdered, he has learned to have a son and not to forget Jesse's kidnapping. After another deep breath, Jay entered the med. He gently knocked on the door and slowly entered Jesse's room.
"Detective Halstead. What are you doing here?" he asked in surprise and put the last things in his travel bag.
"Hey," he said, "You know, please call me Jay," and asked confused, "How are you?" Many times he went through the scenario, but now he did not even know how to tell a child that he is the father. Ruzek said he should just do the Star Wars style. Jesse, I am your father.
Jesse just shrugged his shoulder. How should he be? He will meet his new family today, although he did not feel like it. Why cannot he just live in a boarding school or even better with friends? Does it have to be a new family?
"Are you ready? I'll take you there," Jay said. Incredibly, he looked at the detective. Was not it job of the youth welfare office? Without another comment, he picked up his bag and walked after the detective. The short drive was very silent. Neither Jesse nor Jay knew what to say to interrupt this silence. Jesse was too excited to meet the new family and Jay was afraid of his reaction. Finally he parked and led Jesse to a small park near the river. Luckily, there was not much going on this Friday morning.
"I very much doubt that this family lives in the park," Jesse said kicking a rock away from him.
"I want to talk with you," Jay said. Expectantly, Jesse looked at him. Jay swallowed hard. He did not know how to start. It sounded so simple from Erin's mouth. "What do you know about your father?" Jay asked curiously, though he already regretted the question. Does he really want to know what Camila told Jesse about him?
Jesse just shrugged his shoulders, "Did you find him?"
"Yeah, he'd like it if you move to him," Jay replied.
"Do you know my father, so you met him?" Jesse asked.
Jay nodded nervously and realized that he would see the child's reaction faster than he would like. Jay gasped and stared into the distance for a moment. He bit his lower lip lightly, "Your father is a cop."
Jay was pretty sure Jesse was already in shock.
"I'm your dad," he finally revealed. He felt a great burden fall from his heart. It felt good to tell the truth. Finally, to disclose everything.
"No. I thought you were a friend!" Jesse hissed. Jay wanted to enlighten him that he did not know it long before Jesse shouted, "You're lying!"
"I can explain everything to you," Jay said, gently reaching for his shoulder. He wanted his son to look at him when he talked to him.
"Let me go!" Jesse yelled angrily, punching his supposedly father's stomach with a fierce punch and running away. Jay groaned briefly. Such a blow he would not have expected. He hurried after the boy. He was so distracted by the blow that he did not know in which direction the boy was running. He returned to the car and saw Jesse scratching the GMC Sierra with a small pocket knife. Jay closed his eyes for a moment. He took a deep breath and reached for the knife. Jesse stood silently with his head bowed in front of him. He did not protest when Jay took his pocket knife out of his hand. The paint was missing on the driver's door and the word 'traitor' was clearly visible.
"I know you're mad at me. I'm really sorry, Jesse," Jay said softly, trying not to be provoked by the word, "Listen to me. It's a complicated story, but the short version is that I detected undercover. Luis helped kidnap a child. My job was to free the child and I met Camila and then it happened."
"So, am I the result of an unprotected night?" Jesse asked angrily.
Jay stood opposite him, his mouth half open.
He wondered if he should not argue, but he can not say that they were drunk or even high.
"Please give me a chance. I want to become a part of your life." Jay asserted.
"Go away! You're so good at that! "Jesse shouted, kicking on the car door to hope for more damage. But surprisingly, the older man stayed calm.
"I don't need you! I hate you!" Jesse yelled at him.
"Then we have a problem." Jay stated. Presumably he only stayed calm because Jesse kicked the door, where he already removed the paint. The car had to get into the service station anyway.
"I don't live with you and your fucking wife!"
"Language, Jesse! That's not how you talk about Erin." Jay had to pull himself together.
Jay eyed the bad-tempered teenager. Jesse was silent and avoided eye contact. Jay was sure he calmed down and continued, "Please, Jesse. Come with me. I won't disappoint you. I promise you."
